Abstract
Previous studies with broiler breeders indicate a P retention threshold when fed daily dietary levels of non-phytate P (NPP) exceeding 320 mg. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a hormone secreted by osteocytes which modulates P retention and could be the biological agent which controls the P threshold in breeders. To evaluate the relationship between FGF23 and the P retention threshold, a 4-wk study with 32-wk-old breeders was conducted with 6 dietary treatments with daily NPP intake of 216 to 576 mg/d/h with increments of 80 mg/kg diet. The goals were 1) to elucidate how plasma FGF23 corresponds with the P retention threshold in broiler breeders and 2) to determine the amount of P for optimal egg production and bone health. Results showed that between daily 288 mg and 360 mg dietary NPP intake, P retention decreased from 33 to 26% but FGF23 levels increased from 130 pg/mL to 220 pg/mL with increasing NPP. The elevation of plasma FGF23 between the range of 288 mg to 360 mg dietary NPP/d intake suggests that FGF23 is related to the P retention threshold and may be the major hormone for regulating physiological P levels when intake of daily dietary P levels are increased above 288 mg NPP.

Abstract
1. A study was conducted to assess the possibility of totally replacing supplemental phosphorus sources in White Leghorn (WL) layer diets (aged 28 to 45 weeks of age) with microbial phytase supplementation. One thousand commercial layers (HyLine White) of 28 weeks of age were housed in California cages fitted in open-sided poultry shed at the rate of 20 layers in each replicate. Ten replicates were randomly allotted to each treatment, and the respective diet was fed from 28 to 45 weeks of age.2. A control diet (CD) containing the recommended levels of non-phytate phosphorus (3.6 g/kg NPP) and four other test diets (2-5) having sub-optimal levels of NPP (2.4, 2.0, 1.6 and 1.2 g/kg), but with supplemental microbial phytase (600 FTU/kg) were prepared and fed for the trial duration.3. The layers fed with lower levels of NPP with phytase had the same laying performance as the group fed the CD. Egg production, feed efficiency, egg mass, shell defects, egg density, shell weight, shell thickness, ash content and breaking strength of the tibia and sternum were not affected by feeding the lowest concentration of NPP (1.2 g/kg) plus microbial phytase.4. Phytase supplementation in diets with sub-optimal levels of NPP (2.4, 2 and 1.6 g/kg) significantly improved the Haugh unit score compared to those fed the CD.5. It was concluded that supplemental phosphorus can be completely replaced with microbial phytase (600 FTU/kg) in a diet without affecting egg production, shell quality or bone mineral variables in WL layers (28 to 45 weeks).

Abstract
1. This study assessed the effect of limestone particle size and microbial phytase incorporation on the fate of phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) along the gastrointestinal tract in 72 laying hens.2. Four experimental diets were formulated according to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement to evaluate the effect of two coarse limestone (CL) inclusion. This included a mix (MIX) of 75% CL (2 - 4 mm) and 25% fine particles (FL, <0.5 mm) or 100% FL, in two different basal diets formulated without (MIX0 and FL0) or with 300 FTU of microbial phytase/kg (MIX300 and FL300).3. Contents of the crop, gizzard, duodenum, jejunum and ileum were collected to determine the mean retention time (MRT) of dry matter (DM), the recovery rate of Ca and P in each segment of the gastrointestinal tract and the apparent fractional digestibility coefficient (AD) of Ca and P in each intestinal segment.4. In hens fed FL, microbial phytase decreased the MRT of DM along the intestine (p < 0.05). In the crop and the gizzard, Ca recovery increased with MIX incorporation to a greater extent in hens fed without microbial phytase (p < 0.05). The mixed particle size incorporation decreased absorption kinetics of Ca in hens fed microbial phytase. The AD of P and the absorption kinetics of P were significantly decreased in hens receiving FL300, probably due to complex formation between Ca and phytic acid.5. This study showed that coarse limestone particles incorporation improved mineral utilisation along the digestive tract.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a novel consensus bacterial 6-phytase variant (PhyG) on egg productivity, eggshell quality, and body composition of laying hens fed inorganic phosphate-free diets with reduced energy and nutrients from 23 to 72 wk of age. Five treatments were randomly assigned, performing 28 replicates per treatment with 4 hens each, totaling 560 Hy-Line W80 birds. A positive control (PC) feed was formulated to contain adequate levels of energy and nutrients. A negative control (NC) feed was formulated without added inorganic phosphate (0.12% nonphytic phosphorus [nPP]) and reduced in Ca, Na, dig AA, and metabolizable energy in comparison with PC feed. Phytase was supplemented in the NC feed at 0, 300, 600, and 900 FTU/kg of feed. The responses evaluated were performance, egg quality, economic analysis, body composition, and tibia composition. Data were analyzed by a 2-factor (diet and age) repeated measure analysis. Overall, the feed intake, hen-day egg production, egg mass, and egg revenue were reduced by the complete removal of dicalcium phosphate (DCP) (P < 0.05). Supplement phytase in the NC diet elicits a positive response on each one of those variables. Laying hens consuming the NC feed with 900 FTU/kg of phytase produced more eggs per hen-housed compared with the phytase dosages of 300 and 600 FTU/kg. Body composition was not affected by dietary nPP, Ca, Na, dig AA, and energy reductions (P > 0.05). At 72-wk-old, tibia ash was reduced in hens consuming the NC diet vs. PC (P < 0.05) and no difference was observed between hens supplemented with phytase and the PC feed. Margin over feeding cost increased in a dose-dependent manner with phytase supplementation. Supplementation with 900 FTU/kg of phytase is recommended to improve the number of eggs produced per hen-housed and the number of marketable eggs produced through 23 to 72 wk of age, under this dietary setting.

Abstract
The study examined how adding phytase to nonphytate phosphorus (NPP) diets affected performance, egg quality, reproductive hormones, and plasma biochemical indices in 73- to 80-wk-old laying hens. Six treatments with 5 replicates of 18 Hy-Line brown laying hens each were randomly assigned. Three isonitrogenous, isocaloric diets containing consistent calcium levels (3.8%) were formulated to contain 0.20, 0.25, and 0.30% NPP, treated with or without phytase supplementation (1,000 FYT per kg feed, Ronozyme HiPhos-L, Aspergillus oryzae 6-phytase). The results showed that the addition of phytase to the diet containing 0.20, 0.25, and 0.30% NPP increased egg production by 1.50, 1.64, and 0.97%, respectively, and improved eggshell thickness. Also, use of phytase in the diet contain 0.25, and 0.30% NPP increased the plasma concentration of albumin (ALB), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), phosphorus (P), and plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), plasma calcium (Ca), estradiol-17β (E2β), and luteinizing hormone (LH). In contrast, the egg weight, feed intake, egg mass, feed conversion ratio, albumen height, Haugh unit, yolk, and shell color were unaffected. It can be advisable to use phytase supplementation in an elderly laying hen's diet contain 0.25, and 0.30% NPP to improve shell quality and positively impact reproductive hormones leading to the persistence of egg production.

Abstract
Exogenous phytases are commonly added to low-phosphorus and low-calcium diets to improve P availability and reduce P excretion by poultry. This study investigated the effect of supplementation with a novel bacterial 6-phytase on egg production, egg quality, bone mineralization, and precaecal digestibility of P in laying hens fed corn-soybean meal-based diets. A total of 576 Hy-Line brown laying hens were used in a completely randomized block design at 25-45 weeks of age (woa). The three treatments included a positive control (PC) adequate-nutrient diet with 2840 kcal metabolizable energy/kg, 0.77% digestible lysine, 3.5% Ca, and 0.30% available P (avP); a negative control (NC) diet with 0.16% points less Ca and avP; and an NC diet supplemented with a novel bacterial 6-phytase at 300 phytase units/kg diet. Hen performance and the percentage of damaged eggs were measured every 4 weeks. Body weight, precaecal digestibility of P, and bone parameters at 45 woa were also measured. The reduction in avP and Ca in the NC diet did not compromise performance or egg quality. However, it decreased (P < 0.001) body weight, tibial dry matter, tibial ash and P content, and precaecal digestibility of P. Importantly, all these parameters were significantly improved (P < 0.001) and essentially restored to the levels measured in PC diet-fed hens upon supplementation with phytase. In summary, the present study demonstrates that the new bacterial 6-phytase could effectively counteract the negative effects of P and Ca deficiencies on body weight, bone mineralization, and P availability, thereby supporting high productivity without compromising the welfare of laying hens.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of phytase and monocalcium phosphate supplementation on the dephosphorylation of phytic acid [myo-inositol 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis (dihydrogen phosphate); InsP6] in cecectomized laying hens using total excreta collection. Four corn-soybean meal-rapeseed meal-based diets were mixed with or without 6 g of monocalcium phosphate/kg, with or without supplementation of 1,500 FTU phytase/kg, and had the same calcium concentration at 39 g/kg of feed. Each diet was tested in 5 replicates using a row-column design with 10 cecectomized laying hens in 2 periods. The hens received 120 g/d of feed while being housed individually in metabolism units, and total excreta were collected for a period of 4 d. The monocalcium phosphate × phytase interaction was not significant for InsP6 degradation (P = 0.054). Phytase increased InsP6 disappearance from 13% to 83% (P < 0.001), whereas monocalcium phosphate had no effect. Concentrations of most of the lower inositol phosphate isomers in excreta were higher when monocalcium phosphate was added to the diets. The concentration of Ins(1,2,5,6)P4 in excreta was the highest among the studied partially dephosphorylated inositol phosphates with phytase supplementation and was higher than in diets without phytase supplementation (P < 0.001). Supplementation with phytase increased myo-inositol concentration in excreta (P = 0.002), whereas monocalcium phosphate had no effect. Phosphorus utilization ranged from 4% to 18% and was not significantly affected by the treatments. These results suggest that phytase supplementation markedly increased InsP6 degradation in laying hens. The cecectomized laying hen assay may be suitable for studying the effects of phytase supplementation on phytate dephosphorylation under dietary conditions when performance and phosphorus excretion are unlikely to be affected.
