Abstract
The present study was designed to assess whether competitive athletes and non-athletes differ in terms of certain personality traits linked to atypicalities in emotion awareness and regulation, and whether being an athlete accounts for unique variance in symptoms of anxiety and depression when these traits and exposure to childhood emotional abuse are held constant. In order to address these questions, we had 483 undergraduates (Mage = 19.7 years; 75.8% female), including 228 athletes and 255 non-athletes, complete self-report measures of personality (alexithymia, sensory processing sensitivity or SPS, and anxiety sensitivity or AS), exposure to emotional abuse in childhood, pandemic-related stress, anxiety, and depression. Recreational and elite athletes scored lower on SPS and depression than non-athletes, and recreational athletes also scored lower than non-athletes on AS. However, involvement in competitive sport did not predict depression or anxiety when other variables were controlled for. Alexithymia, AS, and childhood emotional abuse predicted depression, and SPS, AS, and childhood emotional abuse predicted anxiety. The same pattern was seen in a subgroup of athletes (n = 91) who had recently been coached, except that in this subgroup exposure to emotionally abusive coaching was found to be an additional risk factor for anxiety. These findings help to disentangle general and sport-specific risk factors for anxiety and depression and may have important implications for preventing and treating these problems in athletes and non-athletes alike.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Existing research suggests that emotion plays an important role in airway inflammation and asthma symptom control. The objective of this study was to determine whether difficulties regulating emotion were associated with overuse of short-acting inhaled medications and acute medical care usage in adults with asthma. METHODS The sample included 401 adults with asthma recruited from an online panel of adults with chronic respiratory disease. Sequential binary logistic regression models were used to examine the associations of emotion regulation with short-acting inhaled medication use and acute medical care use, controlling for patient characteristics and comorbid mental health conditions. RESULTS Greater difficulties with emotion regulation were significantly associated with greater odds of short-acting inhaler medication overuse (p < 0.001), emergency department visits (p < 0.001), and hospitalizations (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Emotion dysregulation may play an important role in asthma management. Evidence-based interventions to reduce difficulties in emotion regulation may help improve problematic patterns of short-acting medication overuse and acute service use. The current findings should be interpreted in the context of several limitations, including the use of self-report measures. Future research should use electronic medical records or metered dose inhalers to objectively assess short-acting inhaler overuse and acute medical care use.

Abstract
To identify core and bridge nodes in the network structure of alexithymia and cognitive emotion regulation strategies in community-dwelling older adults, and compare network differences among older adults with different health statuses, we recruited 677 participants and network analysis was performed in R 4.2.0. After including the covariates, the nodes Catastrophizing, Difficulty Identifying feelings, and Refocusing on Planning ranked as the top three. The nodes Externally Oriented Thoughts and Difficulty Identifying Feelings were identified as bridge nodes based on bridge strength values. Significant differences were observed between the healthy and comorbidity groups, and also between the single chronic disease and comorbidity groups (p < 0.05). Catastrophizing, Difficulty Identifying Feelings, and Refocusing on Planning were the core nodes, and Externally Oriented Thoughts and Difficulty Identifying Feelings were the key bridge nodes. The network structure of comorbidity in older adults was characterized by stronger ties to non-adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies.

Abstract
Growing evidence from scientific research elucidates the important role of alexithymia in chronic immune diseases. This Review aims to explore the presence of alexithymia in patients affected by asthma and clarify its associations with other involved psychological and physical factors. In January 2023, according to PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search using PubMed and Scopus was conducted. Twenty-six studies were eligible based on inclusion criteria. Alexithymia was significantly present in asthma patients, with most studies reporting a higher prevalence (from 9 to 62.8%) than in control groups (approximately 10%). The coexistence of asthma and alexithymia was associated with a worse quality of life, psychiatric comorbidity, poor symptom control, and difficulty in recognizing exacerbations of the disease. These results suggest that alexithymia can negatively impact the management of asthma. For this reason, we recommend an accuracy assessment in clinical settings and the implementation of psychological interventions to promote the emotional and physical wellbeing of asthmatic patients.

Abstract
Background/Objective Adults with asthma who experience difficulties in emotion regulation are prone to developing psychopathological symptoms that may affect their self-management activities and symptom control. The current research investigated the role of psychological flexibility and cognitive emotion regulation strategies in relation to mental health outcomes (psychological distress and quality of life) among patients with asthma in Pakistan. Method A sample of 200 adults, diagnosed with asthma (32% men, 68% women; Mage = 42.32, SDage = 16.99), completed the acceptance and action questionnaire (AAQ-II) cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire (CERQ), depression, anxiety, stress scale-21 (DASS-21), asthma-related quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) and a self-structured demographic sheet. Results Results of Pearson product moment correlation showed that most of the adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (positive refocusing, refocus on planning, and positive reappraisal) were positively correlated with psychological flexibility and quality of life, whereas negatively correlated with psychological distress. All the maladaptive strategies of cognitive emotion regulation had a significant inverse relationship with psychological flexibility and quality of life, while positively correlated with psychological distress. Results of serial mediation analysis through PROCESS MACRO showed that catastrophising and anxiety fully mediated the relationship between psychological flexibility and asthma-related quality of life. Conclusion Evidence-based interventions should focus on developing psychological flexibility and identifying maladaptive patterns of cognitive emotion regulation strategies for improved mental health and quality of life outcomes for adults with asthma.

Links between cognitive distortions and cognitive emotion regulation strategies in non-clinical young adulthood. Cogn Process 2021; 23:69-77. Abstract
This study examined the possible link between cognitive distortions (CDs), which involve erroneous information processing in normal reasoning, and cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS), which are strategies implemented at the cognitive level to modulate the emotional response following a negative or unpleasant event, in a non-clinical young adult population. Ninety-six participants (age 18-39 years; 48 women) completed the French version of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and the French Cognitive Distortions Inventory for adults. Overall, negative distortions were positively correlated with the use of non-adaptive strategies of cognitive emotion regulation, while positive distortions were negatively correlated with the use of adaptive strategies. The CDs most associated with the use of adaptive CERS were positive dichotomous reasoning, minimization and neutral omission in favour of the positive. Selective abstraction was the CD most associated with the use of non-adaptive CERS. We observed a negative correlation effect between education level and several distortions and catastrophizing, and a positive correlation with acceptance. Men used more positive maximization, requalification as negative, acceptance and blaming others than women. The discussion of the results focuses on explaining the observed relationships between the variables in this non-clinical sample.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alexithymia, difficulty identifying and describing one's emotions coupled with a tendency to externalize, is a potentially important yet understudied treatment target for patients with opioid use disorder. The aim of this study was to examine the role of alexithymia in pain experience among individuals with opioid use disorder. METHODS One-hundred-and-sixty-four patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment completed a battery of self-report measures related to alexithymia, drug use, and pain experiences. Comparisons were performed on the full sample between those with or without clinically significant levels of alexithymia. For a subsample reporting pain (n = 138), intercorrelations were performed to test whether drug use history, pain catastrophizing, pain acceptance, and alexithymia were related to pain severity and pain interference. Regression analyses were performed to test for serial mediation of pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance on the relationship between alexithymia and pain interference in this subsample. RESULTS Individuals with alexithymia showed increased pain catastrophizing and interference, and intercorrelations indicated that increased alexithymia was associated with increased pain interference, more pain catastrophizing, and reduced pain acceptance. A serial regression model among a subset of patients with pain indicated that pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance mediated the effect of alexithymia on pain interference. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that alexithymia, as well as both pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance, contribute to interference associated with pain and are potentially important intervention targets among methadone-treated patients with pain.

Abstract
Symptom perception is complex and influenced by a number of psychological factors, including interoceptive ability and alexithymia. Some individuals may have difficulty distinguishing between internal signals, such as emotions and physical symptoms, however research in this area is sparse. The current study aimed to explore the incidence and nature of this phenomenon, labelled, 'Interoceptive Crossover'. 239 individuals completed an online survey and rated the perceived similarity between a range of emotions (e.g., Sad, Happy, Afraid and Calm) and physical symptoms (e.g., Stomach Pain, Fatigue/Tiredness, Headache and Abnormal Heartbeat) to assess the incidence and nature of Interoceptive Crossover. Individuals demonstrated crossover between emotions and physical symptoms. Some crossovers were more unsurprising and reported by a greater proportion of the sample, such as Afraid and Abnormal Heartbeat (74.5%); Sad and Fatigue (29.4%) and Afraid and Shortness of Breath (58.5%). Other crossovers were less prevalent in the sample and more unexpected such as Satisfied with Headache (1.2%); Bored with Back Pain (5.95%) and Happy and Back Pain (0.4%). Overall, individuals demonstrate Interoceptive Crossover of emotions and physical symptoms and some crossovers are more prevalent whilst others are rare and unexpected. This phenomenon needs further study with respect to relevant constructs including alexithymia and interoception.

Abstract
Although alexithymia has been found to be associated with physical symptoms in psychosomatic disorders such as asthma, mechanisms linking this association are unknown. However, affective alexithymic features may be associated with physical symptoms in the presence of deficits in affective characteristics such as low empathy and high negative affect. This study aimed to assess direct effects of alexithymic traits on physical symptoms and indirect effects of these subscales through empathy and negative affect (e.g. depressive, anxious and stress symptoms) by controlling for asthma severity in patients with asthma. Three hundred patients with asthma completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), the Basic Empathy Scale (BES), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) and the Physical Symptoms Inventory (PSI). After controlling for asthma severity, the results showed that alexithymia subscales of the TAS-20 had no direct effects on physical symptoms, but the difficulty in identifying feelings (DIF) subscale of the TAS-20 was associated with affective empathy and negative affect. Affective empathy was significantly related to negative affect. Affective empathy and negative affect were associated with physical symptoms. The affective subscale of alexithymia on the TAS-20, that is DIF, indirectly affected physical symptoms through affective empathy and negative affect. Findings suggest that patients with asthma who have high levels of DIF may show high physical symptoms in the presence of low affective empathy and high negative affect.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Childhood maltreatment (CM) and cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERSs) may be important in alcohol craving and dependence in alcohol-dependent individuals. The aim of this study was to evaluate direct effects of CM on the subscales of alcohol craving and alcohol dependence and its indirect effects via CERSs in individuals with a diagnosis of alcohol dependence. METHODS In a cross-sectional design, 329 alcohol-dependent males completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-Short version (CERQ-Short), the Alcohol Dependence Scale (ADS), the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS), and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). RESULTS Participants with alcohol dependence had early age of onset of alcohol use (mean = 20.78 years), relatively long duration of alcohol use (mean = 11.14 years), and low education (mean = 9.55 years). Indirect effects were observed from CM to the subscales of alcohol craving and dependence only through maladaptive CERSs after adjusting for demographic and clinical factors. No direct effect was observed through CM on the subscales of alcohol craving and dependence. CONCLUSIONS Although drawing causal conclusions from the current research is impossible, the findings suggest that maladaptive CERSs may be a possible mechanism relating CM to alcohol craving and dependence in treatment-seeking alcohol-dependent individuals, while adaptive CERSs may be less important regarding this relation. However, the findings of the current study need longitudinal research.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study compared psychological factors (i.e., alexithymia, somatization, pain catastrophizing (PC), anxiety, and depression) and QOL for headache patients and headache-free individuals, and examined whether somatization and PC mediate the relationship between alexithymia and headache impact in headache patients. METHODS Study participants consisted of 123 headache patients from an outpatient clinic at a university hospital and 124 headache-free individuals in Daegu, Korea. The survey employed the somatization and anxiety subscales of the Symptom Checklist-90-revised, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Short-Form Health survey-8 (SF-8), and the Headache Impact Test-6. RESULTS Headache patients showed a higher level of all psychological factors and lower level of two summary scores (physical and mental health) as well as the seven dimensions of the SF-8 compared with headache-free individuals. Examination employing the SPSS Process macro found that the direct effect of alexithymia on headache impact was not significant after controlling for somatization and PC. The total indirect effects of alexithymia on headache impact were significant without anxiety and depression as covariates with the significant indirect effects of alexithymia on headache impact via somatization or via PC as well as via somatization and PC. However, after controlling for anxiety and depression, PC was the only significant pathway through which alexithymia was related to headache impact. CONCLUSIONS Headache patients may benefit from interventions aiming at improving psychological factors in order to improve the functioning and QOL of headache patients.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential contributing factors such as alexithymia, emotion regulation and difficulties in emotion regulation, positive/negative affects and clinical factors including severity of alcohol dependence and depression connected to high suicidality in alcohol-dependent outpatients. 205 alcohol-dependent outpatients and 100 normal controls completed the demographic questionnaire, the Persian version of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (FTAS-20), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Positive/Negative Affect Scales, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). The suicidal risk was assessed using the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) and history taking. Alcohol-dependent outpatients showed higher means in alexithymia, difficulties in emotion regulation, suppression subscale, negative affect, and suicide ideation than normal controls. Logistic regression analysis revealed that negative affect, duration of alcohol use, externally-oriented thinking, and severity of alcohol dependence explained lifetime suicide attempts. Depression, impulsivity, severity of alcohol dependence, reappraisal (reversely), externally-oriented thinking, difficulties engaging in goal-directed behaviors, and negative affect significantly predicted the suicidal risk. The findings may constitute useful evidence of the relevancies of alexithymia, emotion regulation, emotion regulation difficulties, and affects to suicidality in alcoholic patients.
