Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between allostatic load in early pregnancy and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) during pregnancy. METHODS High allostatic load in the first trimester was defined as ≥ 4 of 12 biomarkers (systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, high sensitivity C-reactive protein, triglycerides, insulin, glucose, creatinine, and albumin) in the unfavorable quartile. SDB was objectively measured using the Embletta-Gold device and operationalized as "SDB ever" in early (6-15 weeks) or mid-pregnancy (22-31 weeks); SDB at each time point was analyzed as secondary outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression was used to test the association between high allostatic load and SDB, adjusted for confounders. Moderation and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the role of allostatic load in racial disparities of SDB and obesity affected the relationship between allostatic load and SDB. RESULTS High allostatic load was present in 35.0% of the nuMoM2b cohort. The prevalence of SDB ever occurred among 8.3% during pregnancy. After adjustment, allostatic load remained significantly associated with SDB ever (aOR= 5.3; 3.6-7.9), in early-pregnancy (aOR= 7.0; 3.8-12.8), and in mid-pregnancy (aOR= 5.8; 3.7-9.1). The association between allostatic load and SDB was not significantly different for people with and without obesity. After excluding BMI from the allostatic load score, the association decreased in magnitude (aOR= 2.6; 1.8-3.9). CONCLUSION The association between allostatic load and SDB was independent of confounders including BMI. The complex and likely bidirectional relationship between chronic stress and SDB deserves further study in reducing SDB.

Abstract
AIM Aging and age-related diseases are an ever-increasing social and public health problem. Allostatic load (AL) shows great potential as an interdisciplinary tool for assessing the aging of human beings but as yet lacks investigation in animal models which is our study focus at. METHODS Here a continuous study of AL was conducted on naturally aging rats. Blood samples were collected from the rats at ages of 5, 8, 14, 18, and 21 months. Dozens of blood biochemical indicators, including serum corticosterone, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, free fatty acid, CD3+ T cell count, CD4+/CD3+ T cell ratio, CD8+/CD3+ T cell ratio, and CD3/4/8+ T cell apoptosis, were determined. RESULTS AL was scored from those indicators, and we found that AL score gradually increased with age. CONCLUSIONS AL can reliably reveal the cumulative and systemic changes in aging. Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States, with African Americans experiencing higher age-adjusted mortality compared to Whites. African American women in particular carry a high CVD burden due to more exposure to adverse personal and socioenvironmental challenges. Church-based interventions can improve health behaviors and health status of African Americans, yet few have addressed stress-related health. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the 18-month Health for Hearts United intervention in relation to stress-related outcomes (perceived stress, allostatic load) of mid-life and older African American women (≥45 years of age; n = 152 overall sample, n = 65 clinical subsample). The results of the repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) analyses showed overall significant decreases in perceived stress and allostatic load for both treatment and comparison groups over the measurement occasions (baseline and 18 months) with educational level remaining as a significant correlate over time. There was no significant interaction between treatment and time, yet there were trends in improvements for the treatment group compared to the comparison group. The findings demonstrate the potential of church-based interventions in reducing both self-reported stress and allostatic load in African American women, and highlight the need for further investigation of educational level and other possible factors influencing stress management in these settings.

Abstract
This review explores the complex relationship between social determinants of health and the biology of chronic wounds associated with diabetes mellitus, with an emphasis on racial/ethnic disparities. Chronic wounds pose significant healthcare challenges, often leading to severe complications for millions of people in the United States, and disproportionally affect African American, Hispanic, and Native American individuals. Social determinants of health, including economic stability, access to healthcare, education, and environmental conditions, likely influence stress, weathering, and nutrition, collectively shaping vulnerability to chronic diseases, such as obesity and DM, and an elevated risk of chronic wounds and subsequent lower extremity amputations. Here, we review these issues and discuss the urgent need for further research focusing on understanding the mechanisms underlying racial/ethnic disparities in chronic wounds, particularly social deprivation, weathering, and nutrition, to inform interventions to address these disparities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) is associated with various health benefits, especially in improving chronic health conditions. However, the metabolic changes in host metabolism in response to PA remain unclear, especially in racially/ethnically diverse populations. OBJECTIVE This study is to assess the metabolic profiles associated with the frequency of PA in White and African American (AA) men. METHODS Using the untargeted metabolomics data collected from 698 White and AA participants (mean age: 38.0±8.0, age range: 20-50) from the Louisiana Osteoporosis Study (LOS), we conducted linear regression models to examine metabolites that are associated with PA levels (assessed by self-reported regular exercise frequency levels: 0, 1-2, and ≥3 times per week) in White and AA men, respectively, as well as in the pooled sample. Covariates considered for statistical adjustments included race (only for the pooled sample), age, BMI, waist circumstance, smoking status, and alcohol drinking. RESULTS Of the 1133 untargeted compounds, we identified 7 metabolites associated with PA levels in the pooled sample after covariate adjustment with a false discovery rate of 0.15. Specifically, compared to participants who did not exercise, those who exercised at a frequency ≥3 times/week showed higher abundances in uracil, orotate, 1-(1-enyl-palmitoyl)-2-oleoyl-GPE (P-16:0/18:1) (GPE), threonate, and glycerate, but lower abundances in salicyluric glucuronide and adenine in the pooled sample. However, in Whites, salicyluric glucuronide and orotate were not significant. Adenine, GPE, and threonate were not significant in AAs. In addition, the seven metabolites were not significantly different between participants who exercised ≥3 times/week and 1-2 times/week, nor significantly different between participants with 1-2 times/week and 0/week in the pooled sample and respective White and AA groups. CONCLUSIONS Metabolite responses to PA are dose sensitive and may differ between White and AA populations. The identified metabolites may help advance our knowledge of guiding precision PA interventions. Studies with rigorous study designs are warranted to elucidate the relationship between PA and metabolites.

Abstract
Background Discrimination is a pervasive societal issue that monumentally impacts people of color (POC). Many Black, Asian, and Hispanic/Latinx individuals report experiencing race-based discrimination in their lifetime. Discrimination has previously been linked to adverse health outcomes among POC, including stress, depressive, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. These health disparities are posited to have become exacerbated by COVID-19 and the racial awakening of 2020. The current study examined the short- and long-term effects of discrimination on stress, depression, and oppression-based trauma among POC. Methods Participants were (n = 398) who identified as Black, Indigenous, Hispanic/Latinx, and Asian completed an online self-report survey assessing discrimination, depression, stress, and oppression-based trauma collected at 3 time points: (T1) beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic (May 2020), (T2) 6 weeks later during the racial awakening of 2020 (June 2020), (T3) one year later (June 2021). Results Significant positive paths were revealed from T1 discrimination to T2 depression, T2 stress, and T3 oppression-based trauma. The association between T1 discrimination and T3 oppression-based trauma was partially mediated by T2 depression, but not by stress; total and total indirect effects remained significant. The final model accounted for a significant proportion of the variance in T3 oppression-based trauma, T2 depression, and T2 stress. Conclusion Findings are consistent with prior research linking discriminatory experiences with mental health symptomatology and provide evidence that race-based discrimination poses harmful short-and long-term mental health consequences. Further research is necessary to better understand oppression-based trauma to improve the accuracy of clinical diagnosis and treatment of POC.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Background: Exposure to adversity, trauma, and negative family environments can prematurely shorten telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. Conversely, some evidence indicates that positive environments and psychosocial interventions can buffer the shortening of telomere length (TL). However, most work has examined individual aspects of the family environment as predictive of TL with little work investigating multiple risk and protective factors. Further, most research has not examined parent TL relative to child TL despite its heritability. Objective: In the current study, we examined interparental conflict, positive parenting, alcohol use, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and a family-based intervention as predictive of parent TL. We also examined interparental conflict, positive parenting, ACEs, and a family-based intervention as predictive of child TL. Method: Parents and adolescents from a sample of divorced families participated in either a 10-session family-based intervention, the New Beginnings Programme (NBP), or a 2-week active control condition. Approximately six years after the intervention, a subsample of parents (n = 45) and adolescents (n = 41) were assessed for TL. Parents reported on interparental conflict, ACEs, and alcohol use. Children reported on interparental conflict, positive parenting, and ACEs. In separate models, these constructs and the NBP intervention condition were examined as predictors of parent TL and child TL. Results: Findings indicated that the family-based intervention was associated with longer TL in parents. Also, positive parenting was associated with longer TL in children. Conclusions: These findings have important implications for the role of the family and family-based preventive interventions in buffering parent and child biological stress. HIGHLIGHTS Across multiple indices of psychosocial functioning, we found a family-based intervention associated with longer telomere length in parents and positive parenting associated with longer telomere length in children.
