A novel use for routine CBCT imaging during radiotherapy to detect COVID-19

COVID-19 identification in chest X-ray images using intelligent multi-level classification scenario

COVID-19 is an evolving respiratory transmittable disease, and it holds all daily activity worldwide as a global pandemic. It appeared in the city of Wuhan (China) in November 2019 and slowly started spreading to the rest of the world. The number of cases keeps increasing drastically, leading to a shortage of medical resources and testing kids worldwide. As the physicians facing this problem, several scientists and specialists in Artificial Intelligent (AI) are rendering their support to healthcare professionals in the early detection of COVID-19 using chest X-ray image samples to determine the level of severity at a low cost. This paper proposed Genetic Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Network (GDCNN) architecture that includes Huddle Particle Swarm Optimization as an alternative to Gradient descent. Huddle PSO performs better when clubbed with GDCNN architecture. Based on publicly available datasets, trained chest X-ray images are used to predict and identify various pneumonia diseases. The proposed model performed better with an accuracy of 97.23%, a sensitivity of 98.62%, specificity of 97.0%, and precision of 93.0%. The proposed model act as a tool for earlier detection of COVID-19. In the future, we plan to apply the proposed model for the larger dataset and to predict various lung diseases.

Covid-19 and radiotherapy: a systematic review after 2 years of pandemic

Introduction

Following the Covid-19 pandemic spread, changes in clinical practice were necessary to limit the pandemic diffusion. Also, oncological practice has undergone changes with radiotherapy (RT) treatments playing a key role.Although several experiences have been published, the aim of this review is to summarize the current evidence after 2 years of pandemic to provide useful conclusions for clinicians.

Methods

A Pubmed/MEDLINE and Embase systematic review was conducted. The search strategy was "Covid AND Radiotherapy" and only original articles in the English language were considered.

Results

A total of 2.733 papers were obtained using the mentioned search strategy. After the complete selection process, a total of 281 papers were considered eligible for the analysis of the results.

Discussion

RT has played a key role in Covid-19 pandemic as it has proved more resilient than surgery and chemotherapy. The impact of the accelerated use of hypofractionated RT and telemedicine will make these strategies central also in the post-pandemic period.

Multi-Intensity Optimization-Based CT and Cone Beam CT Image Registration

Cancer is a highly lethal disease that is mainly treated by image-guided radiotherapy. Because the low dose of cone beam CT is less harmful to patients, cone beam CT images are often used for target delineation in image-guided radiotherapy of various cancers, especially in breast and lung cancer. However, breathing and heartbeat can cause position errors in images taken during different periods, and the low dose of cone beam CT also results in insufficient imaging clarity, rendering existing registration methods unable to meet the CT and cone beam CT registration tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-intensity optimization-based CT and cone beam CT registration method. First, we use a multi-weighted mean curvature filtering algorithm to preserve the multi-intensity details of the input image pairs. Then, the strong edge retention results are registered using and intensity-based method to obtain the multi-intensity registration results. Next, a novel evaluation method called intersection mutual information is proposed to evaluate the registration accuracy of the different multi-intensity registration results. Finally, we determine the optimal registration transformation by intersection mutual information and apply it to the input image pairs to obtain the final registration results. The experimental results demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed method, meeting the requirements of image-guided radiotherapy.
