Abstract
Increasing levels of boron in water exceeding acceptable thresholds have triggered concerns regarding environmental pollution and adverse health effects. In response, significant efforts are being made to develop new adsorbents for the removal of boron from contaminated water. Among the various materials proposed, inorganic adsorbents have emerged as promising materials due to their chemical, thermal, and mechanical stability. This review aims to comprehensively examine recent advances made in the development of inorganic adsorbents for the efficient removal of boron from water. Firstly, the adsorption performance of the most used adsorbents, such as magnesium, iron, aluminum, and individual and mixed oxides, are summarized. Subsequently, diverse functionalization methods aimed at enhancing boron adsorption capacity and selectivity are carefully analyzed. Lastly, challenges and future perspectives in this field are highlighted to guide the development of innovative high-performance adsorbents and adsorption systems, ultimately leading to a reduction in boron pollution.

Abstract
Boron removal from aqueous solutions has attracted increasing attention, offering benefits for animal and plant health as well as profound significance for exploiting Salt Lake boron resources. In this work, we synthesized novel glycidol-functionalized and hydrophilic polyaniline (PANI) nanorod adsorbents, which were prepared to separate boron compounds from boric acid aqueous solutions. The as-prepared adsorbents were significantly different from the traditional polymers' grafting reaction because they had a higher functional yield and more active position for adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity (0.2210 mmoL∙g-1) and optimal adsorption conditions (boric acid concentration of 1307 mg/L, pH = 9.82, time of 10 h) were obtained with single-factor experimentation and the response surface method (RSM). In addition, adsorption kinetics studies showed that the adsorption reaction belonged to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and diffusion was the key limiting factor; therefore, the adsorption equilibrium time is more than 10 h. Finally, the related possible adsorption mechanism was investigated based on the species and the diffusion of boron in the aqueous phase.

Abstract
The anthropogenic emission of boron to river has become a serious problem that deteriorates the water quality and endangers the ecosystem. Although boron is a micronutrient, it is toxic to plants, animals and humans upon exposure. In this review, we first present the sources of the boron-containing streams and their composition, and then summarize the recent progress of boron removal methods based on adsorption and coagulation systematically. The boron-spiked streams are produced from coal-fired and geothermal power plants, the manufacturing and the activities of oil/gas excavation and mining. The adsorbents for boron removal are classified into the ones functionalized by chelating groups, the ones on the basis of clays or metal oxide. Three subgroups reside in the coagulation approach: electrocoagulation, chemical precipitation and chemical oxo-precipitation. The hybrid technology that combines membrane process and adsorption/coagulation was covered as well. To provide a comprehensive view of each method, we addressed the reaction mechanism, specified the strength and weakness and summarized the progress in the past 5 years. Ultimately, the prospective for future research and the possible improvement on applicability and recyclability were proposed.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are complex molecules produced by the thermal decomposition of organic matter in anthropogenic activities. Novel composites with enhanced physicochemical properties aim to overcome limitations such as adsorption capacity, affinity, and stability for PAHs adsorption. Composites based on chitosan are promising due to the good biocompatibility and adsorption properties. This study focuses on the facile preparation of chitosan beads modified with iron oxide (FeO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles via ionic cross-linking (Ch-FeO/TiO2). FeO and TiO2 were synthesized performing co-precipitation and green chemistry methods, respectively. The characterization evidenced the formation of Ch-FeO/TiO2 with good crystallinity, excellent thermal stability, and superparamagnetic response, attributed to the presence of FeO and TiO2 nanoparticles. High thermal stability up to 270 °C was related to the cross-linked chitosan network. The enhanced adsorption mechanism of Ch-FeO/TiO2 was determined by removing naphthalene from water and seawater samples. The Ch-FeO/TiO2 showed a higher adsorption capacity of 33.1 mg/g compared to 29.8 mg/g of the unmodified chitosan (un-Ch) beads. This is due to the higher functional surface area of 27.13 m2/g, compared to that of 0.708 m2/g for un-Ch. We found a rapid adsorption rate of 240 min and the maximum adsorption capacity of 149.3 mg/g for Ch-FeO/TiO2. A large number of actives sites allows for increasing the naphthalene molecules interaction. Adsorption in seawater samples from Cartagena Bay (Colombia) exhibits an outstanding efficiency of up to 90%. These results suggest a promising, cheap, and environmentally friendly composite for remediation of water sources contaminated with complex compounds.

Abstract
Boron is an essential element for plants and living organisms; however, it can be harmful if its concentration in the environment is too high. In this paper, lanthanum(III) ions were introduced to the structure of chitosan via an encapsulation technique and the obtained hydrogel (La-CTS) was used for the elimination of the excess of B(III) from modelling solutions. The reaction between boric acid and hydroxyl groups bound to the lanthanum coordinated by chitosan active centres was the preponderant mechanism of the bio-adsorption removal process. The results demonstrated that La-CTS removed boric acid from the aqueous solution more efficiently than either lanthanum hydroxide or native chitosan hydrogel, respectively. When the initial boron concentration was 100 mg/dm3, the maximum adsorption capacity of 11.1 ± 0.3 mg/g was achieved at pH 5 and the adsorption time of 24 h. The successful introduction of La(III) ions to the chitosan backbone was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy. Due to its high-performance boron adsorption-desorption cycle and convenient form, La-CTS seems to be a promising bio-adsorbent for water treatment.

Abstract
In this study, a chitosan hydrogel supported with ceria (labelled Ce-CTS) was prepared by an encapsulation technique and used for the efficient removal of excess B(III) from aqueous solutions. The functionalisation of chitosan with Ce(IV) and the improvement in the adsorptive behaviour of the hydrogel were determined by SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) analyses and discussed. The results demonstrate that Ce-CTS removes boric acid from aqueous solutions more efficiently than either cerium dioxide hydrate or raw chitosan beads, the precursors of the Ce-CTS biosorbent. The maximum adsorption capacity of 13.5 ± 0.9 mg/g was achieved at pH 7 after 24 h. The equilibrium data of boron adsorption on Ce-CTS fitted the Freundlich isotherm model, while the kinetic data followed the Elovich pseudo-second-order model, which indicated that the process was non-homogeneous. The dominant mechanism of removal was the reaction between boric acid molecules and hydroxyl groups bound to the ceria chelated by chitosan active centres. Due to its high efficiency in removing boron, good regeneration capacity and convenient form, Ce-CTS may be considered a promising biosorbent in water purification.

Abstract
Magnetic chicken bone biochar (MCB) was fabricated and characterised. The specific surface area, magnetisation value and pHpzc of the MCB were found to be 328 m2 g-1, 64.7 emu/g and 8.3 respectively. The adsorptive performance of MCB for rhodamine B dye (RB) and tetracycline (TC) removal in a single and two-stage stirred adsorber (TSA) was evaluated. The TSA reduced the pressure drops, mass transfer resistances, and fouling of the adsorbent. 63.0 g MCB is required to remove 75% of RB and TC in a single-stage system within 12 h. However, the optimised TSA confirmed that 33.2 g of MCB is needed to achieve 96% removal of TC and 22.2 g for RB within 180 min of 100 mgL-1 effluent solutions. The sorption was suitably described by the Freundlich mechanism. Based on the comparative performance, the MCB is considered a viable efficient and magnetically separable alternative adsorbent.

Abstract
This study investigated the use of eggshell membrane (ESM) as a bio-sorbent and the effect of temperature, pH, and initial concentration on its efficiency. Furthermore, by altering the chemical composition, modified eggshell membrane (MESM) was prepared, and its efficiency was compared with the ESM. Results showed that the adsorption of boron preferred an acidic condition; pH 6 at 35 °C. In addition, the positive value of ΔH° suggested that the reaction favored endothermic pathway, while the negative value for ΔG° further suggested that the adsorption process was spontaneous. Furthermore, the ESM could adsorb 97% of boron, while MESM was able to adsorb 95%. From the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), different functional groups were recorded on the surface of the ESM and MESM, and they played key role in the boron adsorption mechanisms. Linear Freundlich model was suggested to best describe the experimental data with 99.4% correlation coefficient.

Abstract
The metalloid boron (B) and its compounds widely exist in the environment, and boron can have hazardous effects on plants, animals, and human beings when it is found in high concentrations in water bodies. It is difficult and costly to remove B with conventional treatment methods from drinking water. Therefore, alternative and cost-effective treatment techniques are necessary. In this study, for the first time, a novel and environmentally friendly method based on the phytoremediation ability of chitosan and duckweed (Lemna gibba L.) combination was evaluated for B removal from drinking water. Our results from batch adsorption experiment indicated that the highest B uptake capacity of chitosan bead was found as 3.18 mg/g, and we determined the optimal B sorption occurs at pH value of 7. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model better fitted the equilibrium obtained for B removal. B in drinking water could be reduced to less than 2.4 mg L -1 when 0.05 g of plant-based chitosan beads and 12 L. gibba fronds were used in the 4-day treatment period.
