Endowing water-based polyacrylics adhesives with enhanced water-resistant capability by integrating with tannic acid

A sustainable zein-based adhesive for various substrates with improved adhesion and stability

Biomass-based adhesives are gaining attention as environmentally friendly alternatives to toxic petroleum-based adhesives. However, biomass-based adhesives exhibit poor adhesive properties and are highly susceptible to failure in humid environments. In this study, a zein-based adhesive with high adhesive strength and good water resistance was prepared by optimizing the solvent composition and adding tannic acid. Adding 10 wt% acetic acid to an aqueous ethanol solvent increased the shear strength by 45.4 % to 3.09 MPa. Moreover, the addition of 6 wt% tannic acid improved the shear strength of the zein-based adhesive in humid environments from 0.63 to 1.58 MPa. The tannic acid-reinforced zein-based adhesive exhibited good adhesive strength in both humid and dry environments, which was maintained for 30 days on glass, and could be applied to a wide range of substrates. Moreover, the adhesive showed an antioxidant activity >94 %, excellent thermal stability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial effect. Therefore, this adhesive has great application prospects in medical, packaging, and other fields.

Dual Dynamic Cross-Linked Epoxy Vitrimers Used for Strong, Detachable, and Reworkable Adhesives

Novel reprocessable thermosetting adhesives (RTAs), which combine high adhesive strength, reusability, disassembly, and recyclability features, have attracted increasing attention. However, developing RTAs with a rapidly adhesive rate while ensuring high adhesive strength and self-healing ability is still a significant challenge. Here, we prepared a novel vitrimer called DAx-DTSAy, which can be used as an RTA. First, by adjusting the ratio of rigid and flexible segments, maximum tensile strength reached 35.92 MPa. Second, the combined effect of dynamic hydroxyl ester bonds and dynamic disulfide bonds resulted in a rapid stress relaxation behavior, with a complete relaxation time 13.6 times shorter than a vitrimer only cross-linked with hydroxy ester bonds. This feature endowed its good self-healing and reprocessing capabilities. After self-healing at 180 °C, the maximum healing rate of mechanical properties was 91.8%. After three reprocesses, the maximum recovery rate of tensile strength was 120.2%. Furthermore, the combination of rigid and flexible segments and the synergistic effect of dual dynamic covalent bonds made DAx-DTSAy capable of use as a high-performance RTA. The lap shear strength of a DAx-DTSAy film on stainless steel reached 18.18 MPa after 15 min, with a recovery rate of 91.9% after 5 rebonding cycles. Additionally, DAx-DTSAy can be disassembled in chemical agents and exhibited better insulation properties compared to traditional epoxy resins. DAx-DTSAy can be employed as a novel high-performance adhesive in applications such as electronic devices and transportation, contributing to the development of thermosetting adhesives toward recyclability and sustainability.

Bioinspired Polyacrylic Acid-Based Dressing: Wet Adhesive, Self-Healing, and Multi-Biofunctional Coacervate Hydrogel Accelerates Wound Healing

Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and its derivatives are commonly used as essential matrices in wound dressings, but their weak wet adhesion restricts the clinical application. To address this issue, a PAA-based coacervate hydrogel with strong wet adhesion capability is fabricated through a facile mixture of PAA copolymers with isoprenyl oxy poly(ethylene glycol) ether and tannic acid (TA). The poly(ethylene glycol) segments on PAA prevent the electrostatic repulsion among the ionized carboxyl groups and absorbed TA to form coacervates. The absorbed TA provides solid adhesion to dry and wet substrates via multifarious interactions, which endows the coacervate with an adhesive strength to skin of 23.4 kPa and 70% adhesion underwater. This coacervate achieves desirable self-healing and extensible properties suitable for frequently moving joints. These investigations prove that the coacervate has strong antibacterial activity, facilitates fibroblast migration, and modulates M1/M2 polarization of macrophages. In vivo hemorrhage experiments further confirm that the coacervate dramatically shortens the hemostatic time from hundreds to tens of seconds. In addition, full-thickness skin defect experiments demonstrate that the coacervate achieves the best therapeutic effect by significantly promoting collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and epithelialization. These results demonstrate that a PAA-based coacervate hydrogel is a promising wound dressing for medical translation.

Catechol-Amine-Decorated Epoxy Resin as an Underwater Adhesive: A Coacervate Concept Using a Liquid Marble Strategy

The attachment phenomena of various hierarchical architectures found in nature, especially underwater adhesion, have drawn extensive attention to the development of similar biomimicking adhesives. Marine organisms show spectacular adhesion characteristics because of their foot protein chemistry and the formation of an immiscible phase (coacervate) in water. Herein, we report a synthetic coacervate derived using a liquid marble route composed of catechol amine-modified diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (EP) polymers wrapped by silica/PTFE powders. The adhesion promotion efficiency of catechol moieties is established by functionalizing EP with monofunctional amines (MFA) of 2-phenyl ethylamine and 3,4-dihydroxy phenylethylamine (DA). The curing activation of MFA-incorporated resin pointed toward a lower activation energy (50.1-52.1 kJ mol^-1) compared with the neat system (56.7-58 kJ mol^-1). The viscosity build-up and gelation are faster for the catechol-incorporated system, making it ideal for underwater bonding performance. The PTFE-based adhesive marble of the catechol-incorporated resin was stable and exhibited an adhesive strength of 7.5 MPa under underwater bonding conditions.
