Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the contribution of speech motor impairment (SMI), language impairment, and communication modality to communicative and overall participation outcomes in school-age children with cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD Eighty-one caregivers of children with CP provided information about their child's speech and language skills, communication modality, and participation through a web-based survey. Caregiver responses to two validated scales were used to quantify children's communicative participation and overall participation. Children were classified into four speech-language profile groups and three communication modality groups for comparison, based on caregiver-reported information regarding their child's communication skills. RESULTS Children with CP who had co-occurring SMI and language impairment had significantly lower levels of communicative participation and involvement in activities overall, compared to children with SMI alone. Among children with SMI, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) use was associated with greater overall frequency of participation and involvement in life activities. CONCLUSION Children with CP who have both SMI and language impairment and those who are nonspeaking communicators should be prioritized early for communication interventions focused on maximizing participation, including consideration of AAC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children's occupational performance and participation. It is known that the Covid pandemic has adversely affected the whole world in many areas. We aim to investigate the occupational performance and participation of children with DCD before and during the COVID-19. METHODS Sixty-five children aged 5-12 years included in the study were assessed by the Canadian Measure of Occupational Performance and the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were detected in occupational performance and satisfaction scores (p < 0.01). Additionally, except for 'involvement in the home environment' (p > 0.05), there were statistically significant differences in all other areas of participation (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION The occupational performance and participation of children with DCD are impacted during COVID-19. In addition, it is seen that the desire of families to change regarding participation has increased due to COVID-19. It would be beneficial to include strategies to improve these areas in the rehabilitation processes.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relationships between the screen time of children with special needs and of their parents with their home participation, occupational performance, and parent-child relationships according to sex and diagnosis. Parents of 150 children with special needs (age range, 4 to 6 years) such as autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, as well as undiagnosed and developmentally risky children, were included. The Demographic Information Form, Screen Time Usage Form, Parent-Child Relationship Scale, Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth, and Short Child Occupational Profile were used for the data collection. There was a significant relationship between the screen time of girls and their parent-child relationships, home participation, and occupational performance. Moreover, we detected a relationship between the screen time of children with autism spectrum disorder and positive parent-child relationships, home participation, and occupational performance. Therapists should account for screen time in their interventions associated with parent-child relationships, home participation, and occupational performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore participation in daily activities of children with cerebral palsy(CP) in Thailand and influential factors. METHODS A convenience sample of family-caregivers of 80 children with CP, 6-18 year-old, completed self-administered questionnaires (i.e., frequency of participation, Gross Motor Function Classification System-Family Report) during clinic visits at a university hospital. RESULTS Family-caregivers reported that more than one-third of the children never participated in outdoor activities. The gap in the frequency of participation between groups with high versus low motor function was very high. Better gross motor and communication were strong predictors of participation. Caregiver's education and family income were associated with participation in art/cultural, leisure and tourist activities. CONCLUSIONS Family-caregiver-report suggests that Thai-children with CP, especially those with severe impairments, have limited participation in daily activities. Increasing mobility and communication may promote the participation. Comprehensive intervention is needed to narrow the participation gap found between high and low functioning children.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify the participation patterns of Korean children with and without disabilities at home, and the environmental factors affecting their participation. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Korean Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth were applied to 184 caregivers of children aged 5 to 13 years in South Korea. To explore home participation patterns and environmental factors at the item level, analysis of covariance, Pearson's chi-square tests, and radar plots were used. RESULTS The largest group differences in participation frequency were in "school preparation" and "homework" and those at involvement level were in "indoor play and games," "getting together with other people," "school preparation," and "homework." More caregivers of children with disabilities desired changes in their children's participation in all activities. They also perceived that "physical, cognitive, and social demands of typical home activities," "supplies," and "money" hindered children's home participation. CONCLUSIONS The findings provide information about how Korean children participated in home-based activities, whether their caregivers desired changes in their participation, and what environmental factors impede their home participation. These can help service providers understand the interaction between participation and environmental factors and offer insight into where their service goals should be focused for the successful participation of children with disabilities at home.Implications for RehabilitationAs children with disabilities spend much time at home, their parents need to consider both how many times their children participate and how much they get involved in home-based activities.Rehabilitation service providers need to focus on whether parents are satisfied with their children's participation in home activities to decide where much effort is needed for meaningfully occupying children's time at home.The goal of rehabilitation services can be to mitigate a poor fit between children's abilities and the demands of activities for successful participation in home activities.Measuring not only the quantity of participation but also the quality of participation is helpful for setting a collaborative goal with parents to improve the participation of children with disabilities at home.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is unprecedented opportunity to evaluate children's participation in diverse cultural contexts, to enhance cross-cultural research, advance the delivery of culturally responsive pediatric rehabilitation, and translate new knowledge on a global scale. The participation concept is complex and heavily influenced by a child's context. Therefore, effectively capturing the participation concept requires valid, reliable, and culturally sensitive participation-focused measures. This perspective paper proposes a structured process for culturally adapting measures of participation for children and youth with disabilities. METHODS Elements of the Applied Cultural Equivalence Framework and Beaton and colleagues' six-step process were used to create a guiding process for culturally adapting a Participation and Environment Measure (PEM) while drawing on two distinct cultural contexts. This process included forward and back language translations, and semi-structured cognitive interviews, to develop adapted versions of the PEM that are ready for psychometric validation. RESULTS Common challenges to culturally adapting PEM content and administration are identified and methodological strategies to mitigate these challenges are proposed. CONCLUSIONS The proposed process can guide rehabilitation specialists and researchers in adapting participation measures that are suitable for their culture. Such a process can facilitate scalable implementation of evidence-based tools to support participation-based practice in the rehabilitation field.Implications for RehabilitationThe use of a systematic process can harmonize efforts by rehabilitation researchers and service providers to effectively culturally adapt pediatric participation measures to optimize its impact for culturally sensitive research and practice targeting participation.Two distinct, yet complementary, illustrative exemplars showcase the range of considerations and strategies, such as by conducting consecutive rounds of cognitive interviews, when teams use this systematic process to cultural adapt a pediatric participation measure.The systematic process outlined in this paper promotes rigor in achieving all elements of cultural equivalency, when feasible, to best ensure that the participation measure is suitable for use in the target cultural context.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to characterize the participation in family activities in two groups of children: children with cerebral palsy (CP group) and children with typical development (TD group), with regard to diversity, frequency, children's presence, and engagement. METHOD The convenience sample of this descriptive and comparative cross-sectional study conducted in Serbia included 48 children with CP and 74 children with TD, aged 7-12 years. Parents completed the Child Participation in Family Activities (Child-PFA) questionnaire. Mann-Whitney U test was used for data analysing. RESULTS Children with CP experienced less diverse and less frequent family activities compared to children with TD, with more pronounced differences in the diversity of family activities than in their frequency. In the occurring family activities, children with CP were present in a comparable proportion as children with TD. Once in an activity, children with CP were less engaged. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirmed that children with CP do not have the same opportunities to participate and be engaged in everyday family life activities as children with TD. Greater efforts are needed to address these differences and facilitate access to and engagement of children with CP in a variety of family activities.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONIn comparison to children with typical development, family activities are less diverse and less frequent in families of children with cerebral palsy, and children are less engaged, specifically when activities include family's or children's social network.In line with current practice, this study confirms the importance of addressing opportunities for children with cerebral palsy to be often and more engaged in everyday family life activities.Professionals should support a family context that optimizes the engagement of children with cerebral palsy in activities with other family members, thus providing them everyday natural learning opportunities.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore participation in real-life activities during early childhood, compare children's participation based on motor function and investigate relationships between participation and parental empowerment. METHODS Data derived from the Cerebral Palsy Follow-up Program (CPOP) in Norway and the research registry Habilitation Trajectories, Interventions, and Services for Young Children with CP (CPHAB). Fifty-six children (12-56 months, GMFCS levels I-IV, MACS levels I-V) and their families were included. Frequency and enjoyment of participation were assessed by the Child Engagement in Daily Life Questionnaire and parental empowerment in family and service situations by the Family Empowerment Scale at least twice during the preschool years. Differences between groups based on motor function were explored by the Kruskal-Wallis tests. A linear mixed model was conducted to explore relationships between child participation and parental empowerment. RESULTS Similarities and differences in participation between children at different motor function levels varied between the activities explored. Fluctuations in frequency and stable enjoyment scores over time were most common. A statistically significant relationship was revealed between child participation and parental empowerment in family situations, but not in service situations. CONCLUSIONS Child participation appears as context-dependent and complexly influenced by both motor function and parental empowerment. This supports a focus on transactional processes when exploring and promoting child participation.Implications for RehabilitationFamily and recreational activities represent real-life contexts providing opportunities for interactions and experiences supporting development and learning.Children with CP appreciate a wide range of activities in the home and community, which emphasizes the importance of providing opportunities for such participation in order to fulfill their desires and interests.Child participation appears as complexly influenced by the unique activity setting, motor function and characteristics of the family environment, requiring attention to transactional processes when aiming to explore and promote participation.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to identify children with restricted community participation and examine the extent to which the child, family, and environmental factors were associated with restricted participation. METHODS A school-based sample of 92 children with disabilities and 391 children without disabilities aged 5-12 years was recruited in Hong Kong. Parents completed the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth and a demographic questionnaire. Moreover, children completed the Children's Depression Inventory. Rasch analysis was used to determine the criteria that differentiated between children with and without participation restriction, based on frequency of activities. Logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with participation restriction. RESULTS One hundred seventy-three children (35.8% of the sample), including 42 with disabilities, were identified as having restricted participation. Participation restriction was associated with higher depressive symptoms in children (odds ratio (OR) = 1.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.01, 1.08]), lower environmental resources (OR = 0.97, 95% CI [0.96, 0.99]), and coming from families with three or more children (OR = 2.80, 95% CI [1.44, 5.46]). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that a sizable number of children are at risk for restricted participation in the community. Healthcare services and strategies that address the associated factors are needed to promote children's community participation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Participation in daily activities provides many opportunities for children with and without disabilities to improve cognitive, physical and communication abilities; to develop social relationships and to promote adaptive behaviours. The aim of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of the Participation Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY) in Turkish children and youth with and without a disability. METHODS A total of 410 parents of children with (n = 232) and without (n = 178) disabilities, aged 5-17 years, were included in this study. Cronbach's alpha (α) and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were evaluated for internal consistency and test-retest reliability, respectively. Discriminant validity was determined by comparing the differences in participation and environment scores for disability groups and age intervals with the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by post-hoc analyses when results were statistically significant. RESULTS Internal consistency (0.67-0.80) and test-retest reliability (0.67-0.93, p < 0.0001) ranged from moderate to very strong for different summary scores. Discriminant validity of the Turkish version of PEM-CY was supported by significant differences between children with and without disabilities on participation and environment scales (p < 0.05). We identified some significant age differences, but they did not follow consistently. CONCLUSIONS The Turkish version of the PEM-CY is a valid and reliable tool to determine the participation and environmental factors in the home, at school and in community settings in Turkish children and youth aged 5-17 years, with and without disabilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Participation of children with ID it is argued must be understood in relation to the fit with the environment. Since caregivers are a vital factor within the close environment of a child with intellectual disability, their perceptions are unequivocally important. AIMS The main aim of this study is to describe the self-reported participation of children with ID and the perceptions of their primary caregivers. Both frequency of attendance and perceived importance of activity was measured with self-reported and proxy-reports. METHODS & PROCEDURES A custom developed Picture my Participation (PmP) survey was utilised in an interview format with children with intellectual disability whilst their primary caregivers completed the survey independently. RESULTS Overall, the perceptions of children with intellectual disabilities and of primary caregivers showed similarities regarding attendance and activities considered important. On group level, both children and primary caregivers perceived the child to have a high level of attendance ofFormal learning in school, Family mealtime, Interacting with family and Celebrations. An overall poor agreement in perceived frequency of attendance was found. However, in child-primary cargiver-dyads poor agreement in perceived frequency of attendance was found. CONCLUSIONS While primary caregivers and children's ratings of attendance and selection of the most important activities appeared somewhat similar, there was a noted difference, in that primary caregivers' were uniform in their selection, whilst there was a diversity in the selection of activities amongst children.

Abstract
Purpose: To adapt the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth for use with Chinese children and youths, and to investigate its psychometric properties.Materials and methods: The Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth was translated into Chinese using a cultural adaptation process. Parents of 69 children aged 5-12 years with disabilities and 319 children without disabilities completed the questionnaires. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, factorial structure, and known-group validity were examined using Cronbach's alpha, intraclass correlation coefficient, confirmatory factor analysis and t-test, respectively.Results: We added and/or replaced activities with culturally-relevant activities in the Chinese version. Internal consistency was acceptable for most of the scales (0.55-0.86). Test-retest reliability of the summary scores was moderate to high (0.70-0.84). Data-model fit was confirmed in a one-factor structure for the participation scales and a two-factor structure for the environment scales. There were also significant differences in the summary scores between 65 gender- and age-matched pairs of children with and without disabilities on the school participation scales and all the environment scales.Conclusion: This study provides psychometric evidence supporting the use of the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth to assess Chinese children's participation and environmental supports/barriers.Implications for rehabilitationThe Chinese version of the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth was developed through a rigorous translation and cultural adaptation process.There is evidence for the reliability (internal consistency and test-retest reliability) and construct validity (factorial structure and known-group validity) of the Chinese version of the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth.The Chinese version of the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth can be used to assess children's participation in home, school and community settings and to identify environmental barriers that require further intervention.
