Metacognitive knowledge of attention in children with and without ADHD symptoms

Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity (ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder which affects the day-to-day functioning of children and adults with this condition. Pharmacological treatment can reduce the symptoms associated with ADHD, but it has some limitations. The objective of this symposium is to determine the effects of non-pharmacological approaches on ADHD symptoms. Results indicate that the following intervention are promising approaches: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based interventions (MBI), yoga, cognitive and metacognitive intervention, neurofeedback and parental training programs. Current research advocates multimodal approaches in conjunction with school or work accommodations integrating innovative technologies.

Metacognitive awareness and emotional resilience in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Background

This study explored the metacognitive awareness and emotional resilience levels of children suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n=60) with typically developing children (n=30).

Methods

Measures included Metacognitive Awareness Inventory and Resiliency Scales for Children and Adolescents filled out by participants, the List of Adverse Life Events, Turgay DSM-IV-Based Disruptive Behavior Disorders Scale, and Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale—Parent Form filled out by parents.

Results

Metacognitive awareness and emotional resilience were found to be low in the children with ADHD. Emotional resilience increases as metacognitive awareness increases. Metacognitive awareness decreased in the presence of heightened ADHD, anxiety, and/or depression symptoms expressed by the parents' questionnaires (p < 0.001, r = −0.438; p < 0.001, r = −0.403; and p < 0.001, r = −0.421).

Conclusions

Findings identified that metacognitive skills and emotional resilience are affected in ADHD.

Application of metacognitive strategies in the development of emotional and motivational self-regulation of students with special educational needs. Research on children with ADHD

The aim of the presented study is to verify whether the visual methods (Mind Maps and Sketch-noting) considered as metacognitive strategies will help to strengthen emotional and motivational self-regulation in children with ADHD. In this experimental study, 135 participants took part, including 45 primary school students diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with the presentation of mixed symptoms (M = 10.41; SD = 1.42), their parents (N = 45) and teachers (N = 45). The results obtained in the study indicate that after 25 training sessions with the use of both Mind Maps and Sketch-noting, children with ADHD make significantly fewer errors than during the first measurement. However, only in the Sketch-noting group did their average reaction time increase significantly, which indicates that they are more reflective. The presented metacognitive strategies can be successfully applied at school by students with ADHD and constitute a source of support for both students and teachers.

Effectiveness of Metacognitive Regulation Intervention on Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder Students' Scientific Ability and Motivation

This study investigated the effect of metacognitive regulation (McR) intervention on attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) students' astronomy knowledge acquisition and learning motivation. Through a cognitive-behavioural treatment design, this study selected 97 ADHD learners who had poor academic performance. This study divided ADHD students randomly into one experimental group and one control group. After 15 weeks of intervention, results showed that the experimental group students performed significantly better than the control group in scientific abilities, learning motivation, and metacognition. Results suggested that the McR intervention is an effective approach for improving the ADHD students' science knowledge learning abilities.
