Measurement and comparison of head scatter factor for 7 MV unflattened (FFF) and 6 MV flattened photon beam using indigenously designed columnar mini phantom

Dosimetric parameters calculation for 18 MV photon beam in flattening filter (FF) and flattening filter free (FFF) linear accelerators with and without magnetic deflector and lead filter

Dosimetric characteristics of the flattening filter (FF) and flattening filter free (FFF) modes of 18 MV therapeutic photon beam were investigated with and without the magnetic deflector (MD) and lead filter. MCNP version 6.1.0 Monte Carlo (MC) code was used to simulate the 18 MV photon beam of 2100 C/D-Varian linear accelerator (LINAC) for the FF and FFF modes. The MD (uniform magnetic flux density of 1 Tesla) and lead filter (thickness of 1 mm) were modeled to remove contaminant electrons. The dosimetric parameters for different scenarios of LINAC's head were calculated. Removing the flattening filter in the FFF mode increased the dose rate, electron contamination, skin dose, out-of-field dose, and un-flatness compared to the FF mode. While the lead filter decreased the contaminant electrons significantly, using the MD removed all secondary electrons from the beam line. The surface dose was decreased by 8.3% and 11.2% for the magnetic deflector (MD) and lead filter in the FF mode, respectively. The surface dose was decreased by 16.8% and 20.3% for the MD and lead filter scenarios in the FFF mode, respectively. The MD and lead filter decreased surface penumbra by 15.5% and 11.5% compared to the FFF mode. Removing the flattening filter from the LINAC's head improves most of the dosimetric characteristics of the 18MV therapeutic beam. The use of a lead filter and magnetic deflector preserves the skin-sparing property of megavoltage beams that deteriorate in FFF mode. However, using a magnetic deflector does not reduce photon fluence and dose rate.

Interpretation of In-air Output Ratio of Wedged Fields in Different Measurement Conditions

BACKGROUND

The collimator scatter factor (Sc) is one of the most important parameters in monitor unit (MU) calculation. There are several factors that impact Sc values, including head structures, backscatter in dose monitoring chambers, and wedges. The objective of this study was to investigate the variation of Sc with different buildup cap materials, wall thickness of buildup caps, source-to-chamber distances (SCDs), ionization chambers, and wedge angles in 6 MV photon beam.

METHODS

In this study, copper and Perspex buildup caps were made with two different thicknesses for each buildup cap. Measurements were performed on an Elekta Compact medical linear accelerator (6 MV) using RK dosimeter with a sensitive volume of 0.120 cm3 and Farmer-type ion chamber with a sensitive volume of 0.65 cm3. In all measurements, buildup caps and ionization chambers were positioned such as to stand vertically to the beam central axis. It was also investigated the effect of internal wedge with different angles (30° and 60°) different SCDs on Sc.

RESULTS

It was found in large field sizes, Sc values in Perspex buildup cap were higher than copper. Different SCDs and type of ion chamber and wall thickness of buildup caps had no significant influence on Sc values. The presence of wedge influenced Sc values significantly. Variation of Sc in wedged fields compared to open fields had a maximum deviation of 0.9% and 6.8% in 30° and 60° wedge angles, respectively.

CONCLUSION

It was found that the presence of wedges had a significant influence on Sc and increases with wedge angles. As such, it should be taken into account in manual MU calculations.

Comparison of surface dose delivered by 7 MV-unflattened and 6 MV-flattened photon beams

AIM

The purpose of this study is to determine the central-axis dose in the buildup region and the surface dose delivered by a 6 MV flattened photon beam (6 MV-FB) and a higher energy unflattened (7 MV-FFF) therapeutic photon beam for different-sized square fields with open fields and modifying filters.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The beams are produced by a Siemens Artiste linear accelerator with a NACP-02 ionization chamber and the dose is measured by using GafChromic film and two different, commonly used, dosimeters: a p-type photon semiconductor dosimeter (PFD) and a cylindrical ionization chamber (CC13).

RESULTS

The results indicate that the surface dose increases linearly with FS for both open and wedged fields for the 6 MV-FB and 7 MV-FFF beams. The surface dose delivered by the 7 MV-UFB beam is consistent with that delivered by the 6 MV-FB beam for field sizes up to 10 cm × 10 cm, after which the surface dose decreases. The buildup dose for the 7 MV-UFB beam is slightly less than that for the 6 MV-FB beam for field sizes ranging from 5 cm × 5 cm to 15 cm × 15 cm. For both the 6 MV-FB and 7 MV-FFF beams, the measured surface dose clearly increases with increasing field size, regardless of the detector used in the measurement. The surface dose measured with the PFD dosimeter and the NACP-02 and CC13 chambers differ significantly from the results obtained when using GafChromic film. The 7 MV-FFF beam results in a slightly smaller surface dose in the buildup region compared with the 6 MV-FB beam.

CONCLUSIONS

The surface dose delivered by the higher energy 7 MV-FFF beam is less than that delivered by the energy-unmatched FFF beam in previously published works.

Surface dose measurements and comparison of unflattened and flattened photon beams

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the central axis dose in the build-up region and the surface dose of a 6 MV and 10 MV flattened photon beam (FB) and flattening filter free (FFF) therapeutic photon beam for different square field sizes (FSs) for a Varian Truebeam linear accelerator using parallel-plate ionization chamber and Gafchromic film. Knowledge of dosimetric characteristics in the build-up region and surface dose of the FFF is essential for clinical care. The dose measurements were also obtained empirically using two different commonly used dosimeters: a p-type photon semiconductor dosimeter and a cylindrical ionization chamber. Surface dose increased linearly with FS for both FB and FFF photon beams. The surface dose values of FFF were higher than the FB FSs. The measured surface dose clearly increases with increasing FS. The FFF beams have a modestly higher surface dose in the build-up region than the FB. The dependence of source to skin distance (SSD) is less significant in FFF beams when compared to the flattened beams at extended SSDs.
