The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Interest in Antidepressants: An Analysis of Worldwide Internet Searches With Google Trends Data

OBJECTIVE

It is known that in the digital age we live in, people try to get information on many medical issues through Internet searches. Especially as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic triggering mental problems and health professionals' stay-at-home warnings, it has become difficult for individuals to receive psychiatric help, and this has encouraged accessing information about mental problems and their treatments through Internet searches. In this context, infodemiologic research, especially with Google Trends (GT; Google LLC, Mountain View, California, United States), has become very popular in recent years. In our study, it was aimed to examine the interest in frequently used antidepressants and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on Internet searches.

METHODS

Search densities for five antidepressant drugs (sertraline, fluoxetine, citalopram, venlafaxine, duloxetine) that are frequently used around the world were examined on GT on 24/07/2023, and these searches were compared. Searches made within the last five years (24/07/2018-24/07/2023) were included in this study. Images were obtained using GT and Microsoft Excel 2019 (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington), and appropriate statistical analyses were performed with the SPSS Statistics version 22 (IBM Corp. Released 2013. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.).

RESULTS

Sertraline was the most sought-after antidepressant before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic in the world. The searches related to sertraline increased gradually during the pandemic period, and this increase continued in the post-pandemic period. Other antidepressants whose search for it increased with the pandemic are fluoxetine, duloxetine, and venlafaxine. Searches for citalopram decreased during the pandemic process compared to the pre-pandemic period.

CONCLUSION

According to worldwide Internet searches, the prominence of some antidepressant group drugs during the pandemic period may be a reflection of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. Additionally, GT can provide psychiatrists with valuable insights into which depression medications are gaining popularity with the general public over time.

[Analysis with Google Trends and Our World in Data on Global Mental Health in the Context of the covid-19 Pandemic]

Introduction

During the covid-19 pandemic, mental health services were unable to cope with the high demand from the population, so many people chose to search the Internet for information that could help them cope with the psychological process they were experiencing at the time. The aim of this study was to characterize the global search trend for the term «psychiatry» in the context of covid-19 using Google Trends and Our World in Data.

Methods

Descriptive-cross-sectional study on global search trends for Psychiatry in the context of covid-19 under the terms «psychiatry», «depression», «anxiety», «stress», «insomnia» and «suicide» in the category of health, this was conducted over the period 2020-2021 and time graphs were generated.

Results

The term «psychiatry» remained at a consistently high relative search volume (between 60 and 90), with a significant and gradual search in the month of April. The relative search volume for «depression», «anxiety» and «stress» remained constant with some non-significant fluctuations over the period 2020-2021. The term «insomnia» was predominant between January and June 2020, gradually declining in April and remaining constant until October 2021. Finally, the term «suicide» had a fluctuating RBV between 60 and 100 during this period.

Conclusions

During the study period, the topics related to mental health and the speciality of psychiatry remained constant, with some fluctuating, but not outstanding variations.

COVID-19's impact on interest in gastrointestinal topics

There has been a disparity in familiarity regarding the public interest in gastroenterology terminologies during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to understand the outcomes of the public's view on gastrointestinal topics and their potential social effects. This study is a comparative analysis of American Google Trends gastrointestinal terminology during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to a similar time frame (March 2018-February 2020) to determine how trends in the patient-seeking behavior of gastrointestinal terminology changed throughout the pandemic. The analysis discovered a substantial decrease in search volumes of gastrointestinal topics, more significantly in the first pandemic months. Later in the pandemic, search volumes trended toward pre-pandemic years in terms of public interest. In the case of gastrointestinal procedures, endoscopy and colonoscopies, they surpassed pre-pandemic interest levels statistically (p-values of 0.01 and 0.002). The public's decreased interest in gastrointestinal topics at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic may have adverse effects on the healthcare maintenance of patients who could have had a positive outcome in their gastrointestinal health with proper monitoring. Although gastrointestinal internet searches increased toward pre-pandemic levels as the seasons progressed, further research is needed to determine the social impact of decreased public interest.

The development of coronaphobia scale and psychometric effect among UAE people

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health are likely to worsen as the epidemic progresses and will last long even after the pandemic has passed. The present study developed a coronaphobia scale during the pandemic to measure its psychological effects such as fear, anxiety, and depression in the majority of the cases in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is a 35-item scale that measures anxiety symptoms connected with COVID-19 and may be used to identify people who require mental health treatment. Based on 618 adults, the reliability and validity of these items were appropriate. The scales were distributed via social media using a Google form. Internal consistency, reliability analysis, and structural equation models, particularly confirmatory factor analysis, were carried out. The elevated scores on the coronaphobia scale were associated with social phobia, anxiety, stress, and depression. The coronaphobia score distinguishes well between those with and without dysfunctional anxiety (85% specificity and 90% sensitivity). These results support the coronaphobia scale as a valid and effective tool for clinical practice and research.

Usefulness of a Mobile Application (Mentali) for Anxiety and Depression Screening in Medical Students and Description of the Associated Triggering Factors

The impact of the COVID-19 health crisis on the mental health of the population requires the implementation of new primary screening strategies of mental health disorders to intervene in a timelier manner, and technology may provide solutions. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the mobile app Mentali (version 1.1.2; creators: Jorge Alfonso Solís Galván Sodel Vázquez Reyes, Margarita de la Luz Martínez Fierro, Perla Velasco Elizondo, Idalia Garza Veloz, Alejandro Mauricio González and Claudia Caldera Villalobos, Zacatecas, México) as a primary screening tool for anxiety and depression disorders in medical students and to assess the triggering risk factors. This was a descriptive and longitudinal study and included 155 Mexican medical students. Participants interacted with Mentali for 6 months. The mobile app integrated the Beck anxiety and depression inventories together with a mood module. At the end of the interaction, the students received psychological and psychiatric interventions to confirm their primary diagnoses. Symptoms of moderate/severe anxiety and depression were present in 62.6% and 54.6% of the studied population. When corroborating the diagnoses, Mentali obtained a sensitivity of 100%, 95%, and 43% to classify a mental health disorder, anxiety, and depression, respectively. The most important triggers found were as follows: belonging to a dysfunctional family, being introverted, and having suffered from bullying. The proportion of users with excellent/good mood decreased from 78.7% to 34.4% at the end of the semester, and the proportion of users who claimed to have bad/very bad mood increased from 7.4% to 34.4% at the end of the semester (p < 0.05). Mentali was useful for identifying users with anxiety and/or depression, and as an auxiliary tool to coordinate the provision of specialized interventions, allowing us to increase the proportion of patients who needed psychological care and received it by 30%. The efficacy of Mentali in identifying activities through time with an impact on the mood and mental health of the users was confirmed. Our results support the use of Mentali for the primary screening of mental health disorders in young adults, including medical students.

Psychological Health Conditions and COVID-19-Related Stressors Among University Students: A Repeated Cross-Sectional Survey

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has broadly impacted university students' customary life, resulting in remarkable levels of stress and psychological suffering. Although the acute phase of the crisis has been overcome, it does not imply that perceived stress related to the risk of contagion and to the changes in the relational life experienced over more than 1 year of the pandemic will promptly and abruptly decrease. This study aims at comparing university students' psychological health conditions before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also at providing information on how psychological health conditions evolved over the 1 year of the pandemic. We analyzed data from a repeated cross-sectional survey on different samples of university students before the pandemic in 2017 (n = 545) and during the pandemic (n = 671). During the pandemic, data were collected at three stages (Stage 1, April 2020 n = 197; Stage 2, November 2020 n = 274; and Stage 3, April 2021 n = 200). The COVID-19 Student Stress Questionnaire (CSSQ) and the Symptom-Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) were used to assess, respectively, COVID-19-related stressors (Relationships and Academic Life, Isolation, and Fear of Contagion) and the presence of psychological symptoms. Psychological health conditions were compared at baseline and during the pandemic, whereas both psychological health conditions and perceived levels of COVID-19-related stressors were compared over the three pandemic stages. In addition, Logistic Regression was used to explore the associations between COVID-19-related stressors and psychological symptoms. Findings revealed a significant increase in symptoms of Depression (DEP), Phobic-Anxiety (PHOB), Obsessive-Compulsive (O-C), and Psychoticism (PSY) from pre to during the pandemic. Perceived levels of COVID-19-related stress and specific psychological symptoms significantly increased as the pandemic was progressing. COVID-19-related stressors emerged as significantly associated with several psychopathological symptoms. Findings are discussed with the aim of providing tailored interventions to prevent mental disease and promote psychological adjustment in this specific stage of transition within this exceptional global emergency.

Impact of COVID-19 on interest in hepato-pancreato-biliary diseases

An important gap of knowledge exists regarding the public interest in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) diseases during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We aimed to understand the public interest in HPB diseases in the COVID-19 era. In this infodemiology study, we performed a comparative analysis of Google search volume of HPB terms in 2020-2021 and compared it to a similar time frame (2016-2019) in 3 periods to assess how trends in patient seeking behavior of HPB terms changed during the course of the pandemic in the USA and worldwide. Our analysis showed a substantial decrease in search volume of HPB diseases and procedure terms early in the pandemic. However, search volumes appeared to revert back to pre-pandemic years closer to the 1-year mark in USA and worldwide. Patients may have initially neglected HPB-related issues during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, which could lead to worse outcomes. While HPB-related terms reverted closer to pre-pandemic levels later in the pandemic, further research is needed to assess the long-term impacts.
