Merocyanine solvatochromic dyes in the study of synergistic effects in mixtures of chloroform with hydrogen-bond accepting solvents

The Preferential Solvation of Methyl Red in Various Binary Aqueous Solutions: Solvatochromism, Preferential Solvation Parameters, Microheterogeneity of Solvents and Polarity Scale

The solvatochromic characteristics of methyl red were examined in several aqueous solutions from pure water, with methanol, ethanol, propanol, acetonitrile, and dioxane. In order to explain the preferred solvation of the probe azo dye in the binary mixed solvents, the solvent exchange model of Bosch and Roses was used to evaluate the association between the empirical solvent polarity scale (ET) values of MR and solvent composition. Non-linear solvatochromism of methyl red was noted in all aqueous mixtures containing methanol, ethanol, propanol, acetonitrile, and dioxane. In addition to calculating the local mole fraction of each solvent composition in the cybotactic area of the probe, the impact of the solvating shell composition on the preferential solvation of the solute dye was examined in terms of both solvent-solvent and solute-solvent interactions. The local mole fraction of each solvent composition in the cybotactic region of the probe was also calculated. The results indicated that the MR solvation shell was thoroughly saturated with the solvent complex S12 in the following order: dioxane > ethanol > methanol > acetonitrile > propanol. Data from the binary systems were analyzed with KAT parameters using a multi-model; in aqueous methanol and ethanol solutions, the hydrogen acidity was more responsible for the spectral shift, whereas in aqueous acetonitrile and dioxane solutions, the basicity has a greater influence.

Demonstration of Solute-specific Synergism in Binary Solvents

The structure and solvation behavior of binary liquid mixtures of Methanol (MeOH) and N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) are explored by ascertaining their intermolecular interactions with either Rhodamine-B (RhB) or Rhodamine101 (Rh101) dye through steady-state absorption, emission, and two-photon induced fluorescence. Specifically, in the present investigation, we examine the strong synergistic solvation observed for the combinations of hydrogen bond donating (MeOH) and accepting (DMF) solvent pairs. Solvatochromism causes the solvatochromic probe molecules to sense increased polarity compared to their bulk counterparts. The origin of synergism was explained in terms of solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions in binary solvent mixtures interactions, as evidenced by probe dependence. The solvation behavior of the Methanol and DMF binary solvent mixture shows strong probe dependence, with Rh101 showing synergism while RhB does not.

Complexes of carboxylato pillar[6]arene with Brooker-type merocyanines: Spectral properties, pKa shifts and the design of a displacement assay for trimethyl lysine

The supramolecular complexes of three strongly solvatochromic dyes, Brooker's merocyanine (M1) and its two derivatives (M2, M3) with carboxylato pillar[6]arene (WP6) were studied in aqueous solutions. The dye-WP6 mixtures were described in terms of four equilibrium reactions: the acidic dissociations of the pyridinium phenols into the zwitterionic phenolates, the acidic dissociations of the complexed phenols, the bindings of the phenol form dyes to WP6 and the bindings of the phenolates to WP6. The equilibrium constants were determined by an analysis of the absorption spectra. It was found that the acidity of the phenol form merocyanines were largely reduced on complexation, pK_a shifts of 1.1-1.6 units were observed. In neutral solutions, the complexes of the phenol forms of M1 and M2 were dominant, in contrast to the more acidic M3 (a dibromo derivative), of which the phenolate complex was more stable. Comparing the spectral properties, the binding constants and the pK_a-s of the dye-WP6 complexes, the complex M3⋅WP6 was chosen to be tested as a displacement assay. It was demonstrated that this complex functioned as a colorimetric indicator displacement assay which discriminated trimethyl lysine from other lysine derivatives.

Preferential solvation of p-nitroaniline in a binary mixture of chloroform and hydrogen bond acceptor solvents: the role of specific solute-solvent hydrogen bonding

Preferential solvation of solvatochromic probe p-nitroaniline (PNA) has been studied in binary mixtures of chloroform with different hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) solvents using the spectroscopic transition energy (E_T). Analyses of the solvatochromic shifts of the absorption spectra of PNA in different neat solvents as a function of the solvent polarity parameters reveal the major contribution from the solvent dipolarity/polarizability and HBA basicity in the solvation of PNA. The event of preferential solvation in the chloroform-HBA binary mixtures and the preference of one solvent above the other in the solvation shell have been attributed to the hydrogen bond donor and acceptor ability of the solvent mixtures. HBA solvents form a strong hydrogen bond with the amino group while chloroform forms a hydrogen bond with the nitro group of PNA. This specific functional group recognition increases the local concentration at specific sites resulting in location specific preferential solvation and synergistic preferential solvation. Solvents with comparable polarity have been found to show significant synergistic behavior as a result of the formation of stronger solvent-solvent hydrogen bonded S₁-S₂ species. These propositions were found to be supported by theoretical solvation models, calculated HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, the effect of deuterated solvent on the extent of PS, and ¹H NMR spectral analyses.

Solvatochromic Shift of Brooker's Merocyanine: Hartree-Fock Exchange in Time Dependent Density Functional Calculation and Hydrogen Bonding Effect

The Brooker's merocyanine exhibits a large hypsochromic shift from an apolar aprotic solvent to a polar protic solvent. Quantum chemical calculations have been performed to study the solvatochromism, but there remained a discrepancy between the calculated and experimental solvatochromic shifts. In this paper we evaluate quantum mechanically the excitation energies of the Brooker's merocyanine in water, methanol, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane to investigate what are important factors to accurately model the solvatochromism of the dye by using TDDFT in combination with implicit and explicit solvation models including the PCM, PCMSMD, RISM-SCF-SEDD, and mean-field QM/MM. The results severely depend on the density functional, especially on the amount of Hartree-Fock exchange included in the functional. Furthermore, an explicit description of the solute-solvent hydrogen bonds makes a non-negligible contribution to the shift. The experimental large solvatochromic shift can be accurately reproduced by the TDDFT/RISM-SCF-SEDD and mean-field QM/MM calculations with the LC-BOP functional, although the excitation energies in solutions are considerably overestimated. We also estimated the excitation energies and the solvatochromic shift at the SAC-CI/RISM-SCF-SEDD and mean-field QM/MM level, which are in very good agreement with the experimental values. These results indicate that if an explicit solvent model is used, TDDFT calculations using such a long-range corrected functional can accurately model the solvatochromism. However, an ab initio quantum chemical method including sufficient electron correlation effects is required to reproduce not only the solvatochromism but also the excitation energies in solutions.

UV-Vis spectroscopic study and DFT calculation on the solvent effect of trimethoprim in neat solvents and aqueous mixtures

The solvatochromic behavior of trimethoprim (TMP) was analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy and DFT methods in neat and binary aqueous solvent mixtures. The effects of solvent dipolarity/polarizability and solvent-solute hydrogen bonding interactions on the absorption maxima were evaluated by means of the linear solvation energy relationship concept of Kamlet and Taft. This analysis indicated that both interactions play an important role in the position of the absorption maxima in neat solvents. The simulated absorption spectra of TMP and TMP:(solvent)n complexes in ACN and H2O using TD-DFT methods were in agreement with the experimental ones. Binary aqueous mixtures containing as co-solvents DMSO, ACN and EtOH were studied. Preferential solvation was detected as a nonideal behavior of the wavenumber curve respective to the analytical mole fraction of co-solvent in all binary systems. TMP molecules were preferentially solvated by the organic solvent over the whole composition range. Index of preferential solvation, as well as the influence of solvent parameters were calculated as a function of solvent composition.

Reversible photochromism of polynorbornenes bearing spiropyran side groups

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the synthesis and characterization of poly(norbornene) homo- and copolymers bearing spiropyran side groups are described. Difficulties in the homopolymerization of spiropyrans due to the opened merocyanine form were observed leading to low polymerization yields for homopolymers while copolymers with 10 mol% spiropyran content were prepared in good yield. Spiropyrans are characterized by their reversible photochromism, which was conserved in the polymers as shown by UV-Vis spectroscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy. The switching between the apolar spiropyran form and the zwitterionic merocyanine form also leads to switchable wettability as evidenced by contact angle measurements.

Effect of solvent on absorption and fluorescence spectra of a typical fluorinated azo dye for its acidic and basic structures

The effect of 15 polar solvents on absorption and fluorescence energies of a typical fluorinated azo dye, 4-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-pyridin-4-yl azo)-phenol, was reported for its acidic, MH, and basic, M, structures. For MH, the absorption energy is described on the basis of multi-linear equation with Taft's π* (solvent polarity) and β (hydrogen bond acceptor) parameters while the fluorescence energy varies rectilinearly with free energy of transferring the proton to the surrounding solvent, ΔG(t)°. For M, the hydrogen bonding donor ability of protic solvent, α, is a predominant factor which affects the absorption energy while in aprotic solvents, the absorption energy correlates linearly with Kirkwood function. As the ability of the solvent for hydrogen bonding increases, the absorption band width will increase in parallel with the transition energy.

Interaction of protonated merocyanine dyes with amines in organic solvents

2,6-Diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-1-yl)phenolate (1a) and 4-[(1-methyl-4(1H)-pyridinylidene)-ethylidene]-2,5-cyclohexadien-1-one (2a) were protonated in organic solvents (dichloromethane, acetonitrile, and DMSO) to form 1b and 2b, respectively. The appearance of the solvatochromic bands of 1a and 2a was studied UV-vis spectrophotometrically by deprotonation of 1b and 2b in solution in the presence of the following amines: aniline (AN), N-methylaniline (NMAN), N,N-dimethylaniline (NDAN), n-butylamine (BA), diethylamine (DEA), and triethylamine (TEA). Titrations of 1b and 2b with the amines were carried out and the binding constants were determined from the titration curves in each solvent, using a mathematical model adapted from the literature which considers the simultaneous participation of two dye: amine stoichiometries, 1:1 and 1:2. The data obtained showed the following base order for the two compounds in DMSO: BA>DEA>TEA, while aromatic amines did not cause any effect. In dichloromethane, the following base order for 1b was verified: TEA>DEA>BA≫NDAN, while for 2b the order was: TEA>DEA>BA, suggesting that 1b is more acidic than 2b. The data in acetonitrile indicated for 1b and 2b the following order for the amines: DEA>TEA>BA. The diversity of the experimental data were explained based on a model that considers the level of interaction of the protonated dyes with the amines to be dependent on three aspects: (a) the basicity of the amine, which varies according to their molecular structure and the solvent in which it is dissolved, (b) the molecular structure of the dye, and (c) the solvent used to study the system.

Sensing hydrogen peroxide involving intramolecular charge transfer pathway: a boronate-functioned styryl dye as a highly selective and sensitive naked-eye sensor

The synthesis, properties and applications of a novel boronate-functioned styryl dye, BSD, as a colorimetric sensor for hydrogen peroxide is presented. The dye displayed remarkable color change from colorless (lambda(max)=391 nm) to deep red (lambda(max)=522 nm) in the presence of H(2)O(2) and the behavior could be rationalized by the chemoselective H(2)O(2)-mediated transformation of arylboronate to phenolate, resulting in the release of the merocyanine dye which featured with strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) absorption band. The absorption increment of merocyanine at lambda(max)=522 nm (epsilon=87000 L mol(-1) cm(-1)) is linear with the concentration of H(2)O(2) in the range of 1.0 x 10(-7)-2.5 x 10(-5) mol L(-1) with the detection limit of 6.8 x 10(-8) mol L(-1) under optimum conditions. There is almost no interference by other species that commonly exist due to the specific deprotection of H(2)O(2) towards arylboronate group on BSD. The chromogenic sensor has been applied to the detection of trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide in rain water.
