Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and hydroxylation of Mn(II) complexes with bis(2-pyridylmethyl)benzylamine

Oxidative DNA cleavage by Cu(II) complexes: Effect of periphery substituent groups

A series of structurally-related [Cu(R-benzyl-dipicolylamine)(NO3)2] complexes, where R=methoxy- (1), methyl- (2), H- (3), fluoro- (4), and nitro-group (5), were synthesized, and their activity on DNA cleavage was investigated by linear dichroism (LD) and electrophoresis. The addition of a benzyl group to the dipicolylamine ligand of the [Cu(dipicolylamine)(NO3)2] complex (A), i.e., the [Cu(benzyl-dipicolylamine)(NO3)2] complex (3), caused significant enhancement in the efficiency of oxidative cleavage of both super-coiled (sc) and double stranded (ds) DNA, as evidenced by the electrophoresis pattern and faster decrease in the LD intensity at 260nm. The efficiency in DNA cleavage was also altered with further modifications of the benzyl group by the introduction of various substituents at the para-position. The cleavage efficiency appeared to be the largest when the methyl group was attached. The order of efficiency in DNA cleavage was methyl>methoxy≈H>fluoro≈nitro group. When an electron-withdrawing group was introduced, the cleavage efficiency decreased remarkably. The reactive oxygen species involved in the cleavage process were the superoxide radical and singlet oxygen. A possible mechanism for this variation in the DNA cleavage efficiency was proposed.

Synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic property and thermal studies of [Ni(CH(3)COO)2·(NH2CH2Ph)4]

[Ni(CH(3)COO)(2)·(NH(2)CH(2)Ph)(4)] complex was synthesized using benzylamine and nickel acetate. The molecular structure of this complex was obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrometry and thermal analysis. The complex crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with cell parameters a=11.234(4)Å, b=6.459(2)Å, c=22.647(8)Å, α=90.00, β=91.149(4)°, γ=90.00, V=1642.8(10)Å(3), Z=2. The structure has been solved by direct methods and refined to R(1)=0.0876 for 6377 observed reflections I>2σ(I). Magnetic studies for complex show the data over the whole temperature range 5-300 K are well fitted to the Curie-Weiss law with C=1.03 cm(3) K mol(-1) and θ=-1.38 K. This fitting indicates antiferromagnetic interaction between the Ni ions and the metal center exhibits distorted octahedral coordination geometries. The thermal analysis was carried out to understand the thermal stability of the title complex.

The formation of a luminescent Mn(III,IV) intermediate of bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine and acetone assistant its intramolecular C-H oxidation

The dinuclear Mn(II) complexes of bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (dpa) reacted with H(2)O(2) producing a fluorescent dioxodimanganese(III,IV) intermediate [(dpa)Mn(2)Cl(2)(μ-O(2))(OHdpa)](3+), which was characterized by IR, UV, ESR, ES-MS and fluorescence spectra. ES-MS data show that this intermediate could bind an acetone molecule forming dioxodimanganese(III,IV)-acetone adduct [(dpa)Mn(2)Cl(2)(μ-O)(CH(3)COCH(3))(OHdpa)](3+). The emission of dioxodimanganese(III,IV)-acetone at 378 nm was stronger than that of dioxodimanganese(III,IV) complex. Excess acetone molecules promoted the intramolecular C-H oxidation and the formation of one dimensional chain Mn(II) complex [(2-picolinic-acid)Mn(H(2)O)(2)Cl(O)](n) through possible intramolecular oxygen transfer reaction.
