Abstract
In this paper, a core-shell based on the Fe3O4@SiO2@Au nanoparticle amplification technique for a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is proposed. Fe3O4@SiO2@AuNPs were used not only to amplify SPR signals, but also to rapidly separate and enrich T-2 toxin via an external magnetic field. We detected T-2 toxin using the direct competition method in order to evaluate the amplification effect of Fe3O4@SiO2@AuNPs. A T-2 toxin-protein conjugate (T2-OVA) immobilized on the surface of 3-mercaptopropionic acid-modified sensing film competed with T-2 toxin to combine with the T-2 toxin antibody-Fe3O4@SiO2@AuNPs conjugates (mAb-Fe3O4@SiO2@AuNPs) as signal amplification elements. With the decrease in T-2 toxin concentration, the SPR signal gradually increased. In other words, the SPR response was inversely proportional to T-2 toxin. The results showed that there was a good linear relationship in the range of 1 ng/mL~100 ng/mL, and the limit of detection was 0.57 ng/mL. This work also provides a new possibility to improve the sensitivity of SPR biosensors in the detection of small molecules and in disease diagnosis.

Abstract
Branched AuNPs usually have two or more local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption bands due to their structural anisotropy, and the LSPR performance is more sensitive to the changes of environmental refractive index than that of spherical AuNPs. The design and preparation of branched AuNPs as colorimetric probes is expected to improve the selectivity and sensitivity of detection of targets. In this paper, branched AuNPs were innovatively synthesized via hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HPEI) fabricated and capped AuNPs as seeds and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as template agent. The branched AuNPs were characterized by TEM, DLS, zeta potentials and UV-vis spectra. Using the branched AuNPs as a colorimetric probe, the detection system for Hg2+and Ag+showed bright color changes from blue to orange and blue to green based on the morphological evolution of branched AuNPs. The branched AuNPs could selectively detect Hg2+and Ag+at concentrations as low as 77 and 140 nM, respectively. Moreover, this unusual colorimetric method has been successfully used in real water samples and has great potential as a simple, rapid, sensitive and selective method for the detection of Hg2+and Ag+.

Abstract
Exploring excellent peroxidase mimics with enhanced peroxidase-like activity is important to the construction of a fast, low-cost, and convenient colorimetric sensing platform for heavy ions. In this work, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (H2TCPP) was first used to modify ZnS/CoS and make it show better peroxidase-like activity. The metal-cation vacancies generated by Hg2+ contacting H2TCPP/ZnS/CoS further stimulate the catalytic activity. It is reported that the addition of Hg2+ usually causes a decrease of the peroxidase-like activity of metal sulfides. Oppositely, in our work, Hg2+ can trigger the colorimetric signal amplification because of lots of metal-cation vacancies generated on the surface of the nanocomposites (bimetallic sulfides). The peroxidase-like activity of ZnS/CoS was evaluated by virtue of the chromogenic substrate 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) from colorless to blue in 3 min. The enhanced catalytic activity of H2TCPP/ZnS/CoS was attributed to lots of active sites from the metal-cation defects on the surface of H2TCPP/ZnS/CoS as well as the synergistic effect of porphyrin molecules and ZnS/CoS. The adsorption behavior of H2O2 on the H2TCPP/ZnS/CoS surface with defects was studied by density functional theory calculation. Thus, a colorimetric sensing platform based on Hg2+ trigger signal amplification has been successfully constructed, which can be used to sensitively and selectively determine Hg2+ in environmental samples.

Abstract
The modification of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) may drastically enhance their properties, therefore resulting in various related applications. This paper reported the preparation of novel cetyltrimethylammonium bromide/hydroxylated graphene quantum dots (CTAB/HGQDs) thin film using the spin coating technique. The properties of the thin film were then investigated and studied. The functional groups existing in CTAB/HGQDs thin film were confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, while the atomic force microscope (AFM) displayed a homogenous surface of the thin film with an increase in surface roughness upon modification. Optical characterizations using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy revealed a high absorption with an optical band gap of 4.162 eV. Additionally, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra illustrated the maximum emission peak of CTAB/HGQDs thin film at a wavelength of 444 nm. The sensing properties of the as-prepared CTAB/HGQDs thin film were studied using a surface plasmon resonance technique towards the detection of several heavy metal ions (HMIs) (Zn2+, Ni2+, and Fe3+). This technique generated significant results and showed that CTAB/HGQDs thin film has great potential for HMIs detection.

Colorimetric Detection of Sulfide Anions via Redox-Modulated Surface Chemistry and Morphology of Au-Hg Nanorods. Int J Anal Chem 2019; 2019:8961837. Abstract
A new colorimetric assay for the detection of sulfide anions with high sensitivity and selectivity is reported, utilizing Au-Hg alloy nanorods (Au-HgNRs) as probe. Au-HgNRs were prepared by modifying gold nanorods (AuNRs) with reducing agent and mercury ions. In an aqueous solution with sulfide anions, the formation of mercuric sulfide due to redox reaction between the amalgams and sulfide anions greatly changed the surface chemistry and morphology of the Au-HgNRs, leading to a red shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption peak, accompanied by a change in colorimetric response. A good linear relationship was obtained between the LSPR peak wavelength shift and concentration of sulfide anion in the range of 1 × 10−5−1 × 10−4 mol/L. The selectivity of this method has been investigated by other anions. The colorimetric sensing system successfully detected sulfide in wastewater from leather industry.

Abstract
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a label-free optical spectroscopy that is widely used for biomolecular interaction analysis. In this work, SPR was used to characterize the binding properties of highly sensitive nanocrystalline cellulose-graphene oxide based nanocomposite (CTA-NCC/GO) towards nickel ion. The formation of CTA-NCC/GO nanocomposite has been confirmed by FT-IR. The SPR analysis result shows that the CTA-NCC/GO has high binding affinity towards Ni2+ from 0.01 until 0.1 ppm with binding affinity constant of 1.620 × 103 M-1. The sensitivity for the CTA-NCC/GO calculated was 1.509° ppm-1. The full width at half maximum (FWHM), data accuracy (DA), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) have also been determined using the obtained SPR curve. For the FWHM, the value was 2.25° at 0.01 until 0.08 ppm and decreases to 2.12° at 0.1 until 10 ppm. The DA for the SPR curves is the highest at 0.01 until 0.08 ppm and lowest at 0.1 until 10 ppm. The SNR curves mirrors the curves of SPR angle shift where the SNR increases with the Ni2+ concentrations. For the selectivity test, the CTA-NCC/GO has the abilities to differentiate Ni2+ in the mixture of metal ions.

Abstract
A rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection method for the determination of Hg2+ has been successfully developed in this research. Citrate-functionalized silver nanotriangles (AgTrngs) were synthesized via one-pot sodium borohydride method with the edge-length range of 30 - 40 nm. The obtained AgTrngs were fully characterized using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffractometer. The efficiency of the developed sensor was optimum at pH= 8 due to interfering effect of H+ ions for Hg2+ under acidic conditions. The successful detection of mercury in aqueous solutions in the concentration range of 10 nmol L-1-50 μmol L-1 indicated the applicability of the developed sensor for effective monitoring and controlling the level of Hg2+ in industrial effluents. The ability of Hg2+ ion to interact with Ag and form the Hg-Ag alloy (amalgam) over the surface of AgTrngs resulted in an obvious color change from blue to violet. UV-Vis spectrophotometry showed that the sensor has the limit of detection (LOD) value of as low as 4 nmol L-1 which was below the safety level of Hg2+ions (10 nmol L-1) in drinking water. The proposed method can be used for on-line determination of Hg2+ in the complex aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Herein, we report an eco-friendly, mild and one-pot approach for synthesis of silver nanoparticles via a lipopeptide biosurfactant - CHBS. The biosurfactant forms liposome vesicles when dispersed in an aqueous medium. The amino acid groups of the biosurfactant assists in the reduction of Ag(+) ions leading to the production of homogeneous silver nanoparticles, encapsulated within the liposome vesicle, as confirmed from TEM analysis. Rate of synthesis and size of particle were greatly dependent on pH and reaction temperature. Kinetic analysis suggests the involvement of an autocatalytic reaction and the observed rate constant (kobs) was found to decrease with temperature, suggesting faster reaction with increasing temperature. Furthermore, the silver nanoparticles served as excellent probes for highly selective and sensitive recognition of Hg(2+) ions. Interaction with Hg(2+) ions results in an immediate change in colour of nanoparticle solution form brownish red to milky white. With increasing Hg(2+) ions concentration, a gradual disappearance of SPR peak was observed. A linear relationship (A420/660) with an R(2) value of 0.97 was observed in the range of 20 to 100ppm Hg(2+) concentration. Hg(2+) ions are reduced to their elemental forms which thereby interact with the vesicles, leading to aggregation and precipitation of particles. The detection method avoids the need of functionalizing ligands and favours Hg(2+) detection in aqueous samples by visible range spectrophotometry and hence can be used for simple and rapid analysis.

Abstract
A highly sensitive and simple indirect spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of trace amounts of inorganic mercury (Hg(2+)) in aqueous media. The method is based on the inhibitory effect of Hg(2+) on the activity of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the oxidation of ascorbic acid by hydrogen peroxide followed by the reduction of Au(3+) to Au-NPs by unreacted ascorbic acid and the measurement of the absorbance of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak of gold nanoparticles (at 530 nm) which is directly proportional to the concentration of Hg(2+). Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curve was linear in the concentration range of 1-220 ng mL(-1). Limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.2 and 0.7 ng mL(-1), respectively and the relative standard deviation at 100 ng mL(-1) level of Hg(2+) was 2.6%. The method was successfully applied to the determination of mercury in different water samples.

Abstract
Desensitized ionene-stabilized gold nanoparticles have been prepared and applied as a colorimetric probe for the single-step test for sulfate ions at the relatively high concentration level. The approach is based on aggregation of the nanoparticles leading to the change in absorption spectra and color of the solution. These nanoparticles are characterized by the decreased sensitivity due to both electrostatic and steric stabilization, which allows for simple, and rapid direct single-step determination of sulfate at the relatively high concentration level in real water samples without sample pretreatment or dilution. Influence of different factors (the time of interaction, pH, the concentrations of sulfate ions and the nanoparticles) on the aggregation and analytical performance of the procedure was investigated. The method allows for the determination of sulfate ions in the mass range of 0.2-0.4 mg with RSD of 5% from the sample volume of less than 2 mL. It has a sharp dependence of the colorimetric response on the concentration of sulfate, which makes it prospective for indicating deviations of the sulfate concentration regarding some declared value chosen within the above range. The time of the analysis is 2 min. The method was applied to the analysis of mineral water samples.

Abstract
In this study, novel active nanolayers in combination with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) system for zinc ion (Zn(2+)) detection has been developed. The gold surface used for the SPR system was modified with the novel developed active nanolayers, i.e. chitosan and chitosan-tetrabutyl thiuram disulfide (chitosan-TBTDS). Both chitosan and chitosan-TBTDS active layers were fabricated on the gold surface by spin coating technique. The system was used to monitor SPR signal for Zn(2+) in aqueous media with and without sensitivity enhancement by TBTDS. For both active nanolayers, the shift of resonance angle is directly proportional to the concentration of Zn(2+) in aqueous media. The higher shift of resonance angle was obtained for chitosan-TBTDS active nanolayer due to a specific binding of TBTDS with Zn(2+). The chitosan-TBTDS active nanolayer enhanced the sensitivity of detection down to 0.1 mg/l and also induced a selective detection towards Zn(2+).

Abstract
Polypyrrole multi-walled carbon nanotube composite layers were used to modify the gold layer to measure heavy metal ions using the surface plasmon resonance technique. The new sensor was fabricated to detect trace amounts of mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and iron (Fe) ions. In the present research, the sensitivity of a polypyrrole multi-walled carbon nanotube composite layer and a polypyrrole layer were compared. The application of polypyrrole multi-walled carbon nanotubes enhanced the sensitivity and accuracy of the sensor for detecting ions in an aqueous solution due to the binding of mercury, lead, and iron ions to the sensing layer. The Hg ion bonded to the sensing layer more strongly than did the Pb and Fe ions. The limitation of the sensor was calculated to be about 0.1 ppm, which produced an angle shift in the region of 0.3° to 0.6°.

Abstract
A simple, rapid colorimetric detection method for Pb(2+) in aqueous solution has been developed by using sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) modified gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Na2S2O3 was added into the Au NP solution and thiosulfate ions (S2O3(2-)) were adsorbed on the surface of the Au NPs due to electrostatic interactions. Au atoms on the surface of the Au NPs were then oxidized to Au(i) by the O2 that existed in the solution in presence of thiosulfate. The addition of Pb(2+) (the final concentration was lower than 10 μM), accelerated the leaching of the Au NPs, and Pb-Au alloys also formed on the surface of the Au NPs. There was an obvious decrease in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption of the Au NPs. The lowest concentration for Pb(2+) that could be detected by the naked eye was 0.1 μM and using UV-vis spectroscopy was 40 nM. This is lower than the lead toxic level defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), which is 75 nM. In this method, CTAB, as a stabilizing agent for Au NPs, can accelerate the adsorption of S2O3(2-) on the surface of the Au NPs, which shortened the detection time to within 30 min. Moreover, this detection method is simple, cheap and environmentally friendly.
