Novel planar and star-shaped molecules: synthesis, electrochemical and photophysical properties

Fused tetracyclic tris[1,2,4]triazolo[1,3,5]triazine as a novel rigid electron acceptor for efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters

Tris[1,2,4]triazolo[1,3,5]triazine, a new acceptor based on a fused triazole and triazine moiety, is utilized to construct D₃–A star-shaped tristriazolotriazine derivatives, named 3,7,11-tris(4-(10H-phenoxazin-10 yl)phenyl)tris([1,2,4]triazolo)[1,3,5]triazine (TTT-PXZ) and 3,7,11-tris(4-(9,9-dimethylacridin-10(9H)yl)phenyl)tris([1,2,4])triazolo[1,3,5]triazine (TTT-DMAC). Both TTT-PXZ and TTT-DMAC emitters feature TADF activities and AIEE properties. Consequently, solution processed OLEDs based on TTT-PXZ green emitters exhibited good performances, with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to 6.2%.

Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical properties of a new star-shaped molecule with a 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene core and diketopyrrolopyrrole arms

A new star-shaped small molecule BDPP-1 based on 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene as a core and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as rigid arms have been successfully designed and synthesized. The thermal stability, photophysical and electrochemical properties were explored. The synthesized star-shaped small molecule BDPP-1 exhibited excellent solubility, high thermal stability, broad and strong absorption, narrow band gap and appropriate molecular levels. Moreover, the photoinduced charge separation process between the synthesized donor and acceptor PC₆₁BM was evaluated by the fluorescence quenching experiment, revealing that the donor material BDPP-1 possessed efficient photoinduced charge separation performance. These detailed investigations on the structure-property relationship of the novel star-shaped molecule revealed that BDPP-1 is a prospective candidate as a donor material for organic photovoltaic materials.

An overview on synthetic strategies for the construction of star-shaped molecules

Strategies for the synthesis of star-shaped molecules have been in high demand in the last decades due to the importance of those compounds in various fields. The distinctly different properties of these compounds compared to their linear analogues make them versatile building blocks for the formation of mesophases of interesting mesomorphic and photophysical properties. Moreover, the applications of star-shaped molecules as building units for dendrimers as well as in supramolecular host-guest chemistry have also been recently studied. The star-shaped molecules mentioned in this review are classified according to the central core as well as the type of side arms. The properties and applications of these compounds are described in the appropriate contexts. This report summarizes the recent advances in this area.

Synthetic Approaches to Star-Shaped Molecules with 1,3,5-Trisubstituted Aromatic Cores

Herein, we summarize the synthetic approaches that have been developed for the synthesis of star-shaped molecules. Typically, to design such highly functionalized molecules, simple building blocks are first assembled through trimerization reactions, starting from commercially available starting materials. Then, these building blocks are synthetically manipulated to generate extended star-shaped molecules. We also discuss the syntheses of star-shaped molecules that contain 2,4,6-trisubstituted 1,3,5-triazine or 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene rings as a central core and diverse substituted styrene, phenyl, and fluorene derivatives at their periphery, which endows these molecules with extended conjugation. A variety of metal-catalyzed reactions, such as Suzuki, Buchwald-Hartwig, Sonogashira, Heck, and Negishi cross-coupling reactions, as well as metathesis, have been employed to functionalize a range of star-shaped molecules. The methods described herein will be helpful for designing a wide range of intricate compounds that are highly valuable in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Owing to space limitations, we will not cover all of the publications on this topic. Instead, we will focus on examples that were reported by our research group and other relevant recent literature. Apart from the trimerization sequence, this Minireview has been structured based on the key reactions that were used to prepare the star-shaped molecules and other higher analogues. Finally, some examples that do not fit into this classification are discussed.

A highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for the rapid detection of Hg²⁺ based on phenylamine-oligothiophene derivative

A fast-responsive fluorescent phenylamine-oligothiophene sensor 3TDDA was reported. This sensor exhibited highly selective and sensitive detection of Hg(2+) ion in aqueous solution (THF/CH3CN/H2O, 45/50/5, v/v) through fluorescence quenching. The detection was not affected by the coexistence of other competitive metal ions such as Na(+), K(+), Ag(+), Ca(2+), Fe(3+), Al(3+), Co(2+), Ni(2+), Zn(2+), Pb(2+), Cd(2+), Fe(2+) and Cr(3+). A stoichiometric ratio (1:1) of the sensor and Hg(2+) was determined by a Job's plot and mole-ratio curves. The binding of sensor 3TDDA and Hg(2+) was also chemically reversible with EDTA. The detection limit was calculated as low as 4.392×10(-7) M.

Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical properties of two novel carbazole-based dye molecules

Two carbazole-based dye molecules: 3-(6-benzothiazol-2-yl-9H-hexylcarbazole-3-yl)-2-cyano-acylic acid (D3) and 3-[5-(6-benzothiazol-2-yl-9H-hexylcarbazole-3-yl)-thiophen-2-yl]-2-cyan-acylic acid (D4) were synthesized by an approach from carbazole derivate using Vilsmeier-Haack, Suzuki cross-coupling and Knoevenagel reactions. Their physical and electrochemical properties were investigated. D3 and D4 exhibit different optical properties, such as UV absorption, photoluminescence, fluorescence quantum yield and fluorescence lifetime in different solvents. Compared with D3 without a thiophene unit, the maximum absorption wavelength of D4 red-shift obviously and its fluorescence intensity is also enhanced. A shift of the EHOMO and ELUMO is observed for D3 (EHOMO=2.06 V, ELUMO=-1.39 V vs. NHE) and D4 (EHOMO=1.73 V, ELUMO=-1.33 V vs. NHE). D3 and D4 can be used as dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with TiO2 nanomaterial because their EHOMO are lower than the conduction band edge of TiO2 [-0.5 V (vs. NHE)] and their ELUMO are higher than the I(3-)/I(-) redox potential [0.42 V (vs. NHE)].

π-Conjugated diimidazolium salts: rigid structure to obtain organized materials

The photophysical properties and aggregation ability of π-conjugated diimidazolium salts were studied in solution and in the solid state. Experimental investigations were supported by DFT calculations.
