Abstract
Ligand-protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have become promising nanomaterials in fluorescence (FL) methods for mercury ions (Hg2+) monitoring, but low FL efficiency hinders their widespread application. Herein, AuNCs/cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (AuNCs/Ce-MOFs) were prepared by loading 6-aza-2-thiothymine-protected AuNCs (ATT-AuNCs) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect on the surface of Ce-MOFs by electrostatic attraction. This strategy improved the FL intensity of AuNCs through two aspects: (i) the AIE effect of ATT-AuNCs and (ii) the confinement effect of Ce-MOFs, which improved the restriction of intramolecular motion (RIM) of ATT-AuNCs. In addition, Ce-MOFs could adsorb and aggregate Hg2+ during detection, which might increase the local concentration. Therefore, based on the high FL signal of AuNCs/Ce-MOFs and enriched Hg2+, sensitive detection of Hg2+ could be achieved. More importantly, the strong specific recognition between AuNCs and Hg2+ could guarantee selectivity. The developed FL sensor exhibited superior detection performances with a wide linear range of 0.2-500 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 0.067 ng mL-1. Furthermore, the FL sensor used for sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+ in real samples, and the results agreed well with the standard method. In summary, this work proposed an effective and generalized strategy for improving the FL efficiency of AuNCs, which would greatly facilitate their application in pollutant monitoring.

Abstract
A sensitive electrochemical assay for simultaneously detecting cadmium ion (Cd2+) and mercury ion (Hg2+) with the aptamer as recognition unit was established, in which methylene blue (MB) and target-triggered in-situ generated Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) were identified as signal reporters. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes and gold nanoparticles composites were prepared with polyethyleneimine to amplify electrical signals of screen-printed electrodes. Due to the particular base sequences, MB labeled Cd2+ aptamer paired with ssDNA through T-Hg-T structure with Hg2+. Notably, the C-rich structure in ssDNA acted as a template for the generation of Ag NCs, which could induce differential pulse voltammetry signals corresponding to Hg2+ concentrations. This electrochemical aptasensor exhibited detection limits of 94.01 pg/mL and 15.74 pg/mL for Cd2+ and Hg2+, respectively. The developed aptasensor allowed for practical application to tea and vegetable samples with satisfactory accuracy. This work possesses potential in developing biosensing technologies for simultaneous determination of multiple heavy metals.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) is one of the most widespread pollutants that pose serious threats to public health and the environment. People are inevitably exposed to Hg via different routes, such as respiration, dermal contact, drinking or diet. Hg poisoning could cause gingivitis, inflammation, vomiting and diarrhea, respiratory distress or even death. Especially during the developmental stage, there is considerable harm to the brain development of young children, causing serious symptoms such as intellectual disability and motor impairments, and delayed neural development. Therefore, it's of great significance to develop a specific, quick, practical and labor-saving assay for monitoring Hg2+. Herein, a mitochondria-targeted dual (excitation 700 nm and emission 728 nm) near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe JZ-1 was synthesized to detect Hg2+, which is a turn-on fluorescent probe designed based on the rhodamine fluorophore thiolactone, with advantages of swift response, great selectivity, and robust anti-interference capability. Cell fluorescence imaging results showed that JZ-1 could selectively target mitochondria in HeLa cells and monitor exogenous Hg2+. More importantly, JZ-1 has been successfully used to monitor gastrointestinal damage of acute mercury poisoning in a drug-induced mouse model, which provided a great method for sensing Hg species in living subjects, as well as for prenatal diagnosis.

Abstract
This study employed an innovative copper oxide/cuprous oxide (CuO/Cu2O) polyhedron‑cadmium sulphide quantum dots (CdS QDs) double Z-scheme heterostructure as a matrix for the cathodic PEC determination of mercury ions (Hg2+). First, the CuO/Cu2O polyhedral composite was prepared by calcining a copper-based metal organic framework (Cu-MOF). Subsequently, the amino-modified CuO/Cu2O was integrated with mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-capped CdS QDs to form a CuO/Cu2O polyhedron-CdS QDs double Z-scheme heterostructure, producing a strong cathodic photocurrent. Importantly, this heterostructure exhibited a specifically reduced photocurrent for Hg2+ when using CdS QDs as Hg2+-recognition probe. This was attributed to the extreme destruction of the double Z-scheme heterostructure and the in situ formation of the CuO/Cu2O-CdS/HgS heterostructure. Besides, p-type HgS competed with the matrix for electron acceptors, further decreasing the photocurrent. Consequently, Hg2+ was sensitively assayed, with a low detection limit (0.11 pM). The as-prepared PEC sensor was also used to analyse Hg2+ in food and the environment.

Abstract
DNA nanostructures are emerging as promising biosensing platforms due to their programmability, predictable assembly, and compatibility with aptamers for enhanced selectivity. This study focuses on a triple-multivalent aptamer (tApt) complex immobilized on a tetrahedral DNA nanostructure (TDN) and integrated with an electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) electrode for highly sensitive mercury ion (Hg2+) detection. Compared to a linear multivalent aptamer-modified electrode (S2/ERGO-GCE), the 3D tApt/ERGO-GCE aptasensor exhibits superior sensitivity, signal amplification, and reaction kinetics. The tApt/ERGO-GCE sensor achieves an exceptional limit of detection (LOD) of 4.1 zM, surpassing the LOD of 0.71 fM for S2/ERGO-GCE. Additionally, the tApt/ERGO-GCE sensor demonstrates faster response times, with a half-saturation time (T1/2) of 6 minutes compared to 17 minutes for S2/ERGO/GCE. The 3D tApt aptamer's superior performance is attributed to its tetrahedral DNA structure integrated on ERGO, providing multiple aptamer binding sites, facilitating oriented immobilization on the electrode surface, and enhancing analyte capture and concentration. In contrast, the linear S2 aptamers lack rigidity, resulting in a disordered orientation on the electrode surface, hindering efficient Hg2+ binding and reducing target molecule binding efficiency. This study underscores the potential of triple-multivalent aptamer-based nanostructures for ultrasensitive and rapid biosensing applications. The tApt/ERGO-GCE aptasensor's exceptional sensitivity, signal amplification, and reaction kinetics make it a promising tool for Hg2+ detection and other biosensing applications.

Abstract
Herein, a fluorescent "on-off-on" nanosensor based on N,S-CDs was developed for highly precise and sensitive recognition of Hg2+ and ampicillin (AMP). Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots with blue fluorescence were synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal method using ammonium citrate and DL-methionine as precursors. N,S-CDs exhibited a surface abundant in -OH, -COOH, and -NH2 groups, aiding in creating non-fluorescent ground state complexes when combined with Hg2+, leading to the suppression of N,S-CDs' fluorescence. Subsequent to additional AMP application, the mixed system's fluorescence was restored. Based on this N,S-CDs sensing system, the thresholds for detection for AMP and Hg2+ were discovered to be 0.121 µM and 0.493 µM, respectively. Furthermore, this methodology proved effective in identifying AMP in real samples of tap and lake water, yielding satisfactory results. Consequently, in the area of bioanalysis in intricate environmental sample work, the sensing system showed tremendous promise.

Abstract
With the expansion of human activities, the consequent influx of mercury (Hg) into the food chain and the environment is seriously threatening human life. Herein, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots (yCQDs) were prepared via a hydrothermal method using o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and taurine as precursors. The morphological characteristics as well as spectral features of yCQDs indicated that the photoluminescence mechanism should be the molecular state fluorophores of 2, 3-diaminophenothiazine (oxOPD), which is the oxide of OPD. The as-synthesized yCQDs exhibited sensitive recognition of Hg2+. According to the investigation in combination of UV-Vis absorption spectra, time-resolved fluorescence spectra and quantum chemical calculations, the abundant functional groups on the surface of yCQDs allowed Hg2+ to bind with yCQDs through various interactions, and the formed complexes significantly inhibited the absorption of excitation light, resulting in the static fluorescence quenching of yCQDs. The proposed yCQDs was utilized for Hg2+ sensing with the limit of detection calculated to be 4.50 × 10- 8 M. Furthermore, the recognition ability of yCQDs for Hg2+ was estimated in tap water, lake water and bottled water, and the results indicated that yCQDs have potential applications in monitoring Hg2+.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, headspace single-drop microextraction (HS-SDME) has attracted some attention for developing sensitive and selective colorimetric assays due to its excellent capability to reduce matrix interference and enrich analytes. However, the single droplet limits direct visual observation of color change and its quantitative measurement suffers from reduced optical path length. Therefore, amplifying the detection signals in both volume and intensity is an important and challenging task for improving the sensitivity, stability, and accuracy of such colorimetric analysis. RESULTS In this study, a "headspace-nanoenzyme" (HS-NE) strategy was proposed that successfully addressed these challenges and enabled the colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode detection of trace Hg2+. Atomic Hg0, generated via chemical vapor generation (CVG), underwent headspace reaction with AuNPs droplet to form Au@HgNPs, thus catalyzing the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) in the presence of H2O2. The absorbance and fluorescence intensity of oxidized OPD were proportion to the concentration of Hg2+ in the sample solution. Due to the greatly enhanced peroxidase-like activity by Au@HgNPs, the limit of detection was as low as 0.98 nM and 0.21 nM for the colorimetric and fluorescent modes, respectively. The applicability of this assay was further demonstrated with determination of Hg2+ in real environmental and biological samples. Moreover, a convenient and cost-effective paper-based sensing platform was fabricated for rapid on-site detection of Hg2+. SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY This novel HS-NE strategy combines HS-SDME and nanoenzyme-based sensing to achieve dual effects of eliminating matrix interference and amplifying the measurement signal, resulting in improved accuracy, enhanced stability, high sensitivity, and exceptional selectivity, with great potential for on-site determination of trace Hg2+.

Abstract
An isatin-Schiff base ligand (ISS) bearing a pyridine-2-carboxamidine moiety was synthesized through a facile and convenient method for the highly selective colorimetric detection of Hg+2 and F- ions. The sensing ability of the synthesized ISS sensor toward Hg+2 and F- was established using colorimetric and UV-visible techniques. The developed sensor showed excellent selectivity in the presence of other competing ions for Hg+2 and F-, with a color change from yellow to red. The limits of the detection for sensing Hg+2 and F- were calculated to be 2.9 ×10-6 M and 1.4 ×10-5 M, respectively. Job's plot based on spectroscopic data revealed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry between ISS and Hg+2 or F- ion. Furthermore, the binding mechanism, optimized structures and electronic properties of ISS, ISS-F- adduct and ISS-Hg+2 complex were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DFT results indicated a decrease of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap for ISS upon interaction with the F- and Hg+2 species which were in good agreement with the experimental outcomes.

Abstract
Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a highly toxic and ubiquitous pollutant, whose effective detection has aroused widespread concern. A novel ratiometric fluorescent sensor has been designed to rapidly and efficiently detect Hg2+ based on blue/red carbon dots (CDs) with environmental friendliness. This sensor was well characterized via TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV-vis, and zeta potential analysis and displayed excellent fluorescence properties and stability. The fluorescence of blue CDs at 447 nm was significantly quenched with the addition of Hg2+ resulted from the static quenching, whereas that of red CDs at 650 nm remained invariable. A sensitive method for Hg2+ determination was constructed in the range of 0.05-7.0 nmol mL-1 with optimal conditions, and the detection limit was down to 0.028 nmol mL-1. Meanwhile, compared to other 17 metal ions, the ratiometric fluorescent sensor exhibited high selectivity for Hg2+. Furthermore, satisfied recoveries had also been obtained for measuring trace Hg2+ in practical environmental samples. This developed ratiometric fluorescent sensor provided a reliable, environmental-friendly, rapid, and efficient platform for the detection of Hg2+ in environmental applications.

Abstract
In this paper, an enzyme-free and label-free fluorescent nanomodule is proposed for rapid, simple and sensitive detection of Ag+, Hg2+ and tetracycline (TC). The strategy is cleverly designed to enable multiple-purpose detection with as little as 31 nt of ssDNA. Both the embedded dye SYBR Green I and the nanomaterial graphene oxide (GO) are able to distinguish single-stranded DNA from double-stranded DNA; thus, the combination of the two instead of using traditional molecular beacon (MB)-labeled fluorophores and quencher groups can effectively reduce the cost of experiments while efficiently reducing the background noise. Performance testing experiments confirmed the stability and selectivity of the platform; the limits of detection (LODs) of Ag+ and Hg2+ were 1.41 nM and 1.79 nM, respectively, and the detection range were within the WHO standards. In addition, only some base sequences in the flexible functional domain of the nanoloop needed to be programmed to build a universal platform, which was feasible using TC as a target. Therefore, the designed nanomodule has the potential to detect various types of targets, such as antibiotics, proteins, and target genes, and has broad application prospects in environmental monitoring, food testing, and disease diagnosis.

Abstract
An off-on fluorescent probe (NS-CDs-AgNPs) was synthesized based on a one-pot microwave process by utilizing N, S co-doping carbon dots (NS-CDs) and silver nitrate as precursors. The significant peak of NS-CDs-AgNPs at 393 nm in ultraviolet spectrum indicated silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) were successfully synthesized. A faint blue fluorescence emission (442 nm) was displayed when excited NS-CDs-AgNPs at 371 nm. A remarkable fluorescence recovery was observed upon adding of trance Hg2+, whereas the other heavy metal ions did not elicit this response. The reason for this phenomenon was revealed in this work that a spontaneous redox reaction occurred between NS-CDs-AgNPs and Hg2+, which leaded to the formation of NS-CDs-Agn-2NPsHg complexes. On the basis of this mechanism, a new off-on fluorescent analytical method was constructed for Hg2+ detection with linear range of 10-400 nM (R2 = 0.9941), and the detection limit (LOD) of 5.16 nM. Additionally, satisfactory recovery (90.28%-106.13%) and the relative standard deviation (RSD) (RSD<5.21%) were obtained in water sample detection. More importantly, the NS-CDs-AgNPs exhibited lower cytotoxicity and better biocompatibility, indicating a huge potential in cell imaging and clinical medicine.

Abstract
In this study, we have utilized corn bract, a green agricultural by-product, as a carrier. It is subsequently modified with zinc sulfide to synthesize an efficient composite material termed as corn bract/polydopamine@zinc sulfide (CB/PDA@ZnS). This novel composite demonstrates significant potential for biomass removal of mercury ions (Hg(II)). The composition, structure, and morphology of CB/PDA@ZnS composites are characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effect of pH value, adsorbent dosage, initial Hg(II) concentration, adsorption time and temperature, and coexistence ions on the adsorption behavior is investigated. The results show that CB/PDA@ZnS can efficiently remove Hg(II) from water with uptake capacities of 333.03 mg/g and removal efficiency of 99.91% under an optimal conditions (pH of 3, the adsorbent dosage of 0.015 g, contact time of 90 min, and initial concentration of 100 mg/L) at room temperature. The fitting analysis of the experimental data reveals that the adsorption process of Hg(II) follows the quasi-secondary adsorption kinetic model as well as the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, which is a spontaneous heat absorption process. In addition, the composite adsorbent obtained exhibit excellent selectivity for Hg(II) ions and anti-coexisting ion interference performance. After five cycles of adsorption-desorption experiments, the corresponding adsorption capacity is 331.11 mg/g, accounting for 93.33% of the first adsorption capacity, indicating that the adsorbent has excellent regeneration performance. The stability of the adsorbent and the adsorption mechanism of Hg(II) ion are systematically discussed using FT-IR, XRD, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, this adsorbent is tested for the removal of industrial wastewater containing Hg(II), and the adsorption and removal efficiency are 331.67 mg/g and 99.50%, respectively. This study provides a very valuable information for future Hg(II) removal from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
At present, few genetically encoded fluorescent probes are currently available for the analysis of toxic heavy metal ions, and most have poor performance that cannot meet the requirements of sensitive and dynamic detection in living cells. In this study, we designed a single fluorescent protein-based probe sfGFP-MerBD, which can specifically response to Hg2+ with high binding affinity and wide dynamic range. More importantly, the developing probe can timely and reversibly monitor changes of Hg2+ concentration in living mammalian cells. The excellent performance of this probe is largely due to the recognition element of the probe, MerBD, which adopts an unusual planar trigonometric coordination configuration with Hg2+, and the coordination can cause enough conformational change to influence the fluorescence of skeleton protein sfGFP coupled with it. The small peptide MerBD was delicately designed based on the three-dimensional structure of metalloprotein MerR. This novel design strategy solves the challenging problems that there are few natural functional proteins in the process of constructing fluorescent probes for toxic metal ions and some functional proteins cannot be directly used as recognition elements. Based on the new strategy, more genetically encoded fluorescent probes of toxic heavy metal ions can be efficiently constructed and applied in the future.

Abstract
Nanozymes were emerged as the next generation of enzyme-mimics which exhibit great applications in various fields, but there is rarely report in the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions. In this work, Ti3C2Tx MXene nanoribbons@gold (Ti3C2Tx MNR@Au) nanohybrid was prepared firstly via a simple self-reduction process and its nanozyme activity was studied. The results showed the peroxidase-like activity of bare Ti3C2Tx MNR@Au is extremely weak, while in the presence of Hg2+, the related nanozyme activity is stimulated and improved remarkably, which can easily catalyze oxidation of several colorless substrates (e.g., o-phenylenediamine) to form colored products. Interestingly, the product of o-phenylenediamine exhibits a strong reduction current which is considerably sensitive to the Hg2+ concentration. Based on this phenomenon, an innovative and highly sensitive homogeneous voltammetric (HVC) sensing strategy was then proposed to detect Hg2+ via transforming the colorimetric method into electrochemistry since it can exhibit several unique advantages (e.g., rapid responsiveness, high sensitivity and quantificational). Compared to the conventional electrochemical sensing methods for Hg2+, the designed HVC strategy can avoid the modification processes of electrode coupled with enhanced sensing performances. Therefore, we expect the as-proposed nanozyme-based HVC sensing strategy provides a new development direction for detecting Hg2+ and other heavy metals.

Abstract
Removal of mercury (Hg) ion from water is important while still faces challenges in capacity and adsorption speed. Herein, using thiol-containing mercaptoacetic acid (MA) as the template, we constructed a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbent, Zr-MSA-MA (MSA, mercaptosuccinic acid). Unlike other monodentate acids such as acetic acid and formic acid, MA benefits to maintain high-content binding sites, in the meantime of defect formation. On the basis, Zr-MSA-MA exhibits a high adsorption capacity of 714.8 mg g-1 for Hg2+ and fast adsorption kinetics, superior to other MOF-based adsorbents. Co-existing metal ions and pH have only slight interference for the adsorption behavior. Besides, the adsorption is proved to an endothermic reaction and the adsorbent can be regenerated based on a simple elution. Further analysis indicates the strong chemical bonding of Hg2+ and -SH is the main adsorption mechanism. Thus, our work demonstrates the Zr-MSA-MA can serve as a potential adsorbent for Hg2+, and provides a novel strategy to construct defective adsorbent via using active group-containing template.

Abstract
Mercury ion, as a metal cation with great toxic effect, is widely present in various production and living environments. It seriously threatens human health and environmental safety. It is of great significance to develop convenient and effective methods for mercury ion detection. Here, we designed and synthesized a new ratiometric fluorescent probe (namely APS-NA) for the detection of mercury ions in the environment and multiple biological samples. The probe is constructed by covalently connecting two fluorophores with lipolic acid to achieve fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In the molecular structure of APS-NA, acridone is used as an energy donor, 1,8-naphthalimide is used as an energy acceptor, and a dithioacetal group is used as the reaction site for Hg2+. The intact APS-NA mainly shows the green fluorescence from the acceptor moiety 1,8-naphthalimide; the presence of Hg2+ ions would break the dithioacetal linkage between acridone and 1,8-naphthalimide; the defunctionalization of FRET would lead to bright blue fluorescence emission of acridone; thus ratiometric fluorescent detection of Hg2+ can be achieved by this recognition process. The probe not only has a large Stokes shift (Δλ = 110 nm), but also has high selectivity, high sensitivity (low detection limit 30 nM) and naked eye visualization. In addition, we have successfully used this probe for the detection Hg2+ of actual samples and imaging of a variety of organisms. These results indicate that the probe has broad application prospects.

Abstract
Conventional Hg2+ visual sensors are unsustainable, hindering their practical application for improved water quality and health. In order to address this challenge, herein, N, S co-doped carbon nanodots (NS-CDs) were prepared and well characterized, presented the fluorescent monitoring for Hg2+ over other metal ions with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.47 µM. Next, the CDs were successfully modified by thymine without any fluorescence labelling (referred to as T-NS-CDs). The sensitivity to Hg2+ cloud be noticeable enhanced due to the formation of T-Hg2+-T specific base pairs. Accordingly, the LOD was calculated with values as low as 1.56 nM. Furthermore, Hg2+ could be released and complexed with antidote (meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid) (DMSA-Hg2+), being the responsible for the reversible interconversion between T-Hg2+-T and DMSA-Hg2+. Interestingly, the proposed sensing system also applies to the fluorescent sensing for Hg2+ in tap water with satisfactory recoveries (96.97 %-101.38 %, RSD < 2 %). Thus, by simply combination of elemental doping and surface functionalization, the surface state and functionalities of CDs could be tailorable, endowing the fluorometric sensing towards Hg2+ in environmental system.

Abstract
Rhodamines gain sustained attention owing to their great potential for probe design applications. Herein, the facile preparation of a new pyridyl functionalized rhodamine dye PR is reported, which has stable fluorescence signal in water with maximum emission peak at 594 nm and Stokes shift of 81 nm. Based on dye PR, a new fluorescent probe PRHg has been developed by modifying the spirolactone of PR with hydrazine hydrate so as to produce spirolactam recognizing group for sensing of Hg2+. PRHg exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg2+ in water/ethanol (v/v = 4/1, pH = 7.0) by a specific Hg2+-binding promoted spirolactam ring opening and hydrolyzing process. And, the detection limit for Hg2+ is evaluated to be 8.5 nM. Besides, the probe can respond to Hg2+ within 40 min and over a wide pH range from 4.0 to 10.0. Moreover, PRHg (40 µM) performs low cytotoxicity to HeLa cells (over 91.0 % cell survival rate), which allows the probe to be employed for tracing intracellular Hg2+ by fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
To develop efficient tools for monitoring toxicant Hg2+ in aqueous solution attracts great attention because the abnormal distribution of Hg2+ in environment poses great threat to human health. We here report the preparation of a novel quinoline-rhodamine hybrid fluorescent probe P7RHg for ratiometricly sensing of Hg2+ in water, with a spirolactam-thiosemicarbazide reaction group. Upon treatment by Hg2+, the ratio of fluorescence intensity (F600/F460) exhibits nearly 90-fold enhancement, presenting two well-resolved emission peaks (140 nm). Meanwhile, the specific Hg2+-induced desulfurization provides probe P7RHg an excellent selectivity to Hg2+, with a detection limit of 8.6 nM. Moreover, the low cytotoxicity allows P7RHg to be employed for tracing Hg2+ in living cells by confocal fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a heavy metal pollutant that can affect the safety of water environment and endanger human health. A novel detection strategy (GNPs-L-Cys-Rh6G2) for Hg2+ based on a fluorescence "OFF-ON" was proposed. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were assembled with l-cysteine (L-Cys), which was used as a "bridge" to link with rhodamine 6G derivatives (Rh6G2). The fluorescence state transition of GNPs-L-Cys-Rh6G2 switching from "OFF"-"ON" was observed because Hg2+ opened the spirolactam ring through a catalytic hydrolysis mechanism. The fluorescence signal of the GNPs-L-Cys-Rh6G2 system mixed with Hg2+ in the concentration range of 10-100 μM was analyzed and determined with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the spiked Hg2+ concentration in real water samples were successfully quantified by GNPs-L-Cys-Rh6G2, which was in line with the ideal average recovery rate and relative standard deviation. The proposed strategy exhibited high specificity, sensitivity and stability, providing a novel sensing platform for heavy metal ions detection in water environment.

Abstract
The development of mercury ion selective fluorescent probe is significant because it is one of toxic heavy metals and poses great risks and hazards to human health. Herein, we develop a mercury ion-selective fluorescent probe, namely IB, based on imidazole decorated benzothiadiazole that obtained by a facile palladium catalytic C-N coupling reaction. IB exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards mercury ion in water with nearly 32-fold fluorescent enhancement. The detection limit is calculated to be 0.93 nmol/L. In addition, the sensing of mercury ion can be conducted in a wide pH scope ranging from 4.0 to 10.0. Subsequently, the mercury ion elicits fluorescence of IB solution can be quenched by the addition of cyanide anions, showing "off-on-off" fluorescence transformation with at least 5 cycles, demonstrating the reversible sensing ability of IB. Furthermore, an INHIBIT logical detector has been developed using mercury ion and cyanide anions as inputs and fluorescence of IB as output. Significantly, IB can be utilized for mercury ion detection in real water sample.

Abstract
A kind of nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was facilely fabricated from polyethyleneimine and anhydrous citric acid, and which was adopted to develop a neoteric "on-off" and "off-on" fluorescent sensor for rapidly and efficiently sensing Hg2+ and I-. The fluorescence of N-CDs was notably quenched (off) in the existence of Hg2+ derived from strong interaction and the electron transfer between N-CDs and Hg2+, while the quenched fluorescence of the N-CDs and Hg2+ system was strikingly regained by addition of I- (on) resulted from the separation of N-CDs and Hg2+ due to the higher binding preference between Hg2+ and I-. Under optimal conditions, the linear detection ranges were 0.01-20 μM for Hg2+ and 0.025-7 μM for I-, respectively. Meanwhile, the detection limits could be down to 3.3 nM for Hg2+ and 8.5 nM for I-, respectively. Satisfied recoveries had also been gained for measuring Hg2+ and I- in practical water samples. The constructed "on-off-on" fluorescent sensor provided a simple, rapid, robust and reliable platform for detecting Hg2+ and I- in environmental applications.

Abstract
Herein, a simple and portable paper-based analytical device (PAD) based on the inherent capability of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to serve as a great emitter for the bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate (TCPO)-hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) chemiluminescence (CL) reaction is introduced for the detection of harmful mercury ions (Hg2+ ). The energy is transferred from the unstable reaction intermediate (1,2-dioxetanedione) to CQDs, as acceptors, and an intensive orange-red CL emission is generated at about 600 nm, which is equal to the fluorescence emission wavelength of CQDs. The analytical applicability of this system was examined for the determination of Hg2+ . It was observed that Hg2+ could significantly quench the produced emission, which can be attributed to the formation of a stable and non-luminescent Hg2+ -CQDs complex. Accordingly, a simple and rapid PAD was established for monitoring Hg2+ , with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.04 μg mL-1 . No interfering effect on the signal was found from other examined cations, indicating the acceptable specificity of the method. The designed assay was appropriately utilized to detect the Hg2+ in cosmetic samples with high efficiency. It is characterized by its low-cost, easy-to-use, facile but, accurate, and high selective for the detection of Hg2+ ions. Besides, the portability of this probe makes it suitable for on-site screening purposes.

Abstract
A simple and green method for the synthesis of fluorescent carbon nanospheres (CNs) was proposed using chrysanthemum as a natural precursor and ethylenediamine as the co-reagent. The prepared CNs show strong blue fluorescence in water with quantum yield of 13.7 %, and distinguished fluorescent stability against photobleaching and ion strength. Meanwhile, the fluorescence signal of CNs is reversible and sensitive to temperature in the range of 20-80 °C, which makes CNs useful as a temperature sensor. More importantly, the CNs can serve as excellent fluorescent sensors for detecting MnO4- and Hg2+ with the detection limit of 0.72 and 0.26 μM, respectively. MnO4- quenches the fluorescence of CNs through inner filter effect and static quenching mechanism, while Hg2+ forms a stable complex with the amino group on the surface of CNs, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of CNs. However, the stronger affinity between Hg2+ and captopril (Cap) results in the fluorescence quenched by Hg2+ recovery after the addition of Cap. Thus, the CNs-Hg2+ system is employed as a novel sensitive and selective fluorescence "turn-on" sensor for Cap in the range of 0-75 μM. Inspired by the sensing results, the developed sensors were successfully used for the determination of MnO4-, Hg2+ in river water samples and Cap in the pharmaceutical and urine samples.

Abstract
A double signal amplification method was developed for sensitive detection of Hg2+ based on exonuclease III (Exo III) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). In the presence of Hg2+, the ineffective primers could bind with helper DNA to form dsDNA by T-Hg(II)-T mismatch for the first signal amplification. Then, the ineffective primers were digested by Exo III to effective primers which initiate PCR reaction for the second signal amplification. This conversion from ineffective to effective primers for triggering PCR reaction has not been reported for the detection of Hg2+. Through the double signal amplification strategy, the sensitivity of this proposed method was significantly improved with the limit of detection 1.46 nM. With the specific T-Hg(II)-T recognition, the selectivity of this new method was satisfactory. And the recoveries were between 92.3 % and 109.0 %. These results suggested that the proposed method was reliable to detect Hg2+ in water samples.

Abstract
The fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs)-based sensor has been attracting great attention in recent years. There are still big challenges in the preparation and application of FONs-based sensor. In this study, a FONs-based sensor was designed and developed through facile hydrothermal process using 3-perylenecarboxaldehyde (PlCA) as the fluorophore and L-methionine (Met) as the recognition site for mercury ions. According to the experimental results, the fluorescence intensity of the as-prepared PlCA-M would decrease when adding Hg2+ and the mechanism was extrapolated to be photoinduced electron transfer inducing by specific coordination interaction. The acquired PlCA-M-based sensor was used to monitor Hg2+ in several real samples (environmental water, tea, and apple) with the limit of detection being 60 nM. Remarkably, a visual detection device based on FONs, SDS-PAAG (sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel) @PlCA-M was firstly constructed and successfully used to Hg2+ semi-quantitation by naked eyes. In addition, the acquired FONs was applied into imaging tool for security information detection and identified as solid-state luminescent material for the first time.

Abstract
Giving the fact that mercury ions (Hg2+) is highly toxic, migratory and bioaccumulative and even very small amounts of mercury can cause serious damage to health, resulting in many diseases, such as abdominal pain, renal failure, nervous system damage. The content of mercury in drinking water quality standard of our country has been strictly limited. Therefore, it is of good research interest to develop a stable fluorescent probe capable of detecting the presence of mercury in biological cells. In this study, a novel fluorescent probe based on isophoronitriles scaffold, DNC-Hg, was designed and synthesized for monitoring mercury ion in living HeLa cells. The good properties of the probe may be attributed to the unique strong electron-absorbing group in the structural design, the good conjugation effect, and the mature Hg2+ recognition site. The probe exhibited good selectivity and stability, large Stokes shift(174 nm) and low cytotoxicity. Furthermore, this stable probe DNC-Hg could be used for cellular imaging.

Abstract
Development of new fluorescent probes for mercury ion analysis in environmental or living organism is undergoing quick growth due to its detrimental toxicity to environmental safety, ecological security, and human being. However, in most cases, the industrial waste water is acidic whereas it remains a great challenge to real-time monitor mercury ion directly at low pH using small molecule fluorescence probe. In this study, we have successfully designed and synthesized the Naph (1, 8-Naphthalimide derivative) -based small molecule probe termed as Naph-NSS capable of monitoring mercury ion in a broad range at low pH (from 2.0 to 7.0). The solid spectral studies demonstrated the high sensitivity and selectivity of the probe towards mercury ion among various species. After binding with Hg2+, the fluorescence of Naph-NSS greatly enhanced, and the mechanism of which was investigated by DFT studies. The probe was able to be loaded on paper strip for instant and fast detection of mercury ions. In addition, the probe is also suitable for detection of mercury ion in environmental samples, living cells and in vivo.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) is a toxic trace metal ubiquitously distributed in the environment. Inorganic mercury (as HgCl2 ) can cause immunotoxicity in birds, but the mechanisms of action are still not fully resolved, especially with respect to responses to viral infections. To investigate the potential immunomodulatory effects of Hg2+ on specific cell types of the avian immune system, chicken macrophage (HD-11) and B-lymphocyte (DT40) cell lines were applied as in vitro models for the innate and adaptive immune systems, respectively. The cells were stimulated with synthetic double-stranded RNA, which can be recognized by toll-like receptor-3 to mimic a viral infection. The Hg2+ showed concentration-dependent cytotoxicity in both cell lines, with similar median effect concentrations at 30 µM. The cytotoxicity of Hg2+ was closely related to glutathione (GSH) depletion and reactive oxygen species induction, whereas the de novo synthesis of GSH acted as a primary protective strategy. Nitric oxide produced by activated macrophages was strongly inhibited by Hg2+ , and was also influenced by cellular GSH levels. Cell proliferation, gene expression of microRNA-155, and cellular IgM levels in B cells were decreased at noncytotoxic Hg2+ concentrations. The secretion of antiviral interferon-α was induced by Hg2+ in both cell lines. Overall, our results suggest that Hg2+ exposure can cause immunomodulatory effects in birds by disrupting immune cell proliferation and cytokine production, and might result in disorders of the avian immune system. Abstract
A new fluorescence probe based on [5]helicene derivative (MT) was designed and synthesized. The chemical structure of the probe was fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. MT which is the combination of thioamide[5]helicene with Schiff base-thiophene moiety, exhibited a high selectivity to detect Hg2+ through irreversible desulfurization reaction with "TurnON" fluorescence response and large Stokes shift of 110 nm in aqueous methanol solution. The detection limit of MT was 1.2 ppb (6.0 × 10-3 µM), which is lower than the limit of Hg2+ level in drinking water, as specified by WHO (6.0 ppb) and U.S. EPA (2.0 ppb). The Hg2+ detection range of the probe was 0.07-1.6 µM with good linearity. Under UV irradiation, MT possessed the capability to detect Hg2+ in diverse context of real samples, including drinking and sea waters, vegetable tissue and brain tumor cell. In addition, MT could be used as a paper test strip for monitoring and screening of Hg2+ contamination in environment.

Abstract
Mercury is one of the leading chemicals of concern and receives much attention in environmental safety. It is of great necessity to develop advanced Hg2+ analysis method for rapid detection and monitoring. Field-effect transistor (FET) sensor, an emerging electronic sensor, has received great attention in environmental analysis since it has unique advantages in achieving rapid analysis of chemicals. Herein, an FET sensor is constructed with Ti3C2Tx MXene as the channel material to detect Hg2+ in water. The sensor displays rapid and selective response to Hg2+. Moreover, the sensor achieves satisfactory performance in Hg2+ detection in high salinity environment (1 M NaCl), which benefits its applications in real water analysis. Based on the investigation of sensing mechanism, the strong response of Ti3C2Tx MXene FET sensor to Hg2+ is due to the adsorption and reduction of Hg2+ to Hg+ on the Ti3C2Tx surface. This reported label-free Ti3C2Tx MXene platform can detect Hg2+ in high salinity environment with high specificity, which has significant application potential for on-site monitoring and risk assessment of Hg2+ in aqueous systems.

Abstract
Hydrazine and mercury (Hg) poisoning represented a serious hazard to human health. So, developing method to detect and recognize them is highly desirable. Here, we prepared a multifunctional colorimetric and fluorescent probe (PI-Rh) consisting of a phenanthroimidazole (PI) dye conjugated with a Rhodamine (Rh) group for the effective recognition of hydrazine and Hg2+, induvidually and collectively, with different colorimetric and fluorescence outputs. Probe PI-Rh displays low detection limits measured to be 0.0632 μM (~2 ppb) and 0.0101 μM (~2 ppb) respectively for hydrazine and Hg2+ with high selectivity and excellent sensitivity. Moreover, the experimental results indicated that the superiority of this probe lied in its wide applications, for example, successful response in real water, and soil analysis. Interestingly, an visual, rapid, and real-time detection of gaseous hydrazine can be realized with 0.2793 μM detection limit using the facile PI-Rh-impregnated test paper.

Abstract
Mercury is an anthropogenic toxic heavy metal found in the environment. It is highly desirable to develop a fluorescence probe that can selectively and sensitively detect mercury ions using a turn-on response. This paper reports the successful development of a peptide fluorescence probe, TP-2 (TPE-Trp-Pro-Gln-His-Glu-NH2), which uses aggregation-induced emission effects and high selectivity to detect Hg2+. After fluorescence was activated, Hg2+ was efficiently detected using the change in fluorescence intensity. The detection limit for Hg2+ in the buffer solution was 41 nM (R2 = 0.9952). Owing to its high sensitivity, high cell permeability, and low biotoxicity, the probe could perform live cell imaging under biological conditions. This study demonstrated that TP-2 can detect Hg2+ in complex biological environments.

Abstract
This work describes a novel fluorescent chemoprobe that uses carbon dots and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to monitor mercury ions in aqueous samples attributed to the principle of inner filter effect. The fluorescent response signal of the carbon dots is diminished by AgNPs, attributed to inner filter effect, and is restored with the addition of Hg2+. The fluorescent chemoprobe was specific over the range from 0.01 to 2.5 μM and a high sensitivity of 3.6 nM. The chemoprobe was validated using real local aqueous samples, and the spike recoveries of 97.4%-103% were excellent and satisfied. The data indicated that the developed fluorescent chemoprobe was sensitive, selective, stable and reliable. This fluorescent chemoprobe provides a sensitive tool with broad prospects for mercury detection in aqueous samples and the work will offer ideas for designing and constructing novel fluorescent probes.

Abstract
In this study, the nanocomposite adsorbent (ZnS-zeolite NaA) was prepared by a simple ion-exchange method, which modified the zeolite NaA synthesized from fly ash. The removal efficiency, adsorption mechanism of mercury ions by ZnS-zeolite NaA and release of zinc ion into aqueous solution during the adsorption process were determined. The results showed that ZnS nanoclusters were introduced the supercages of zeolite by ion exchange to synthesize the ZnS-zeolite NaA with high removal capacity for Hg2+ in the initial pH 2-7 of solution. Determination of the adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic parameters, in combination with X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses, revealed that the Hg2+ adsorption by ZnS-zeolite NaA was Hg2+ complexed and ion exchanged with ZnS in the ZnS-zeolite NaA to form stable HgS, and then, the released Zn2+ was adsorbed by the zeolite, preventing Zn2+ pollution. The Hg2+ removal rate was greater than 99.90% with the coexistence of either Zn2+ or Cu2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+. After five repetitions, the Hg2+ removal rate by the ZnS-zeolite NaA was only slightly decreased by 2%. Therefore, ZnS-zeolite NaA synthesized using fly ash has potential for broad application as a Hg2+ adsorbent.

Abstract
It is momentous to exploit rapid, specific and on-site detection methods for mercury ion (Hg2+) in loess, as the severe toxicity of Hg2+ and the fragile ecological environment of Loess Plateau. In this paper, a novel fluorescent probe DC-Hg (Dicoumarin-Hg) was synthesized by 3-hydroxybiscoumarin and phenyl thiochloroformate at room temperature. DC-Hg could exclusively combine with Hg2+ to 'turn-on' yellow fluorescence at 530 nm among various other metal ions. The relationship between the remarkable increase in intensity and concentration of Hg2+ was associated with photoinduced electron transfer (PET), which was founded by Job's plot and 1H NMR. The limit detection of DC-Hg showed to 85.25 nM in aqueous medium, which could be applied to varying situations. For the loess samples, they were only extracted by hand-shake and filtration for quickly complete the treatment operation on site, and the results proved that DC-Hg could satisfactorily detect the Hg2+ in mercury pollution areas.

Abstract
A novel dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent sensor (CDs@Eu-MOFs) has been synthesized successfully by encapsulating water-soluble fluorescent CDs into the chambers of Eu-MOFs via a simple one-pot hydrothermal method, which can be used for the detection of Hg2+ in environmental water samples. The synthesized CDs@Eu-MOFs inherited simultaneously the excellent luminescence performance of Eu3+ and CDs and exhibited good structural and fluorescence stability in aqueous solution. The presence of Hg2+ changed the fluorescence intensity of CDs, while the fluorescence intensity of Eu-MOFs hardly changed, which could be used as the recognition part and the reference part respectively to construct the ratiometric fluorescence sensor. The obtained Hg2+ fluorescent probe showed a wide linear range (0-300 μM) and a low detection limit (0.12 nM). The developed method can be used as a multi-functional fluorescent sensor with high sensitivity and good selectivity for the determination of Hg2+ in actual water samples.

Abstract
Mercury ions are crucially harmful to ecosystem and human being due to their characters of bioaccumulation and difficulty of biochemical degradation. Therefore, development of mercury ion detection methods has attracted increasing interests recently. In this study, we successfully synthesized a hydroxyphenylbenzothiazole (HBT)-based fluorescent probe HBT-Hg in an extremely simple manner for mercuric ions detection. The spectral studies revealed that the probe HBT-Hg could react with Hg2+ selectively and sensitively in PBS buffer (10 mM, pH = 7.40), showing ratiometric fluorescent changes from blue to light green. The response mechanism of the probe HBT-Hg and Hg2+ was finally confirmed by HPLC analysis, viz., the probe HBT-Hg converted to its precursor compound 1. Finally, the probe HBT-Hg was successfully applied in monitoring Hg2+ in living A549 cells.

Abstract
A new procedure is described for the determination of Hg2+ ions in water samples. A Rhodamine based fluorescent sensor was synthesized and the experimental conditions were specifically optimized for application to environmental samples, which requires low detection limits and high selectivity in competitive experiments with realistic concentrations of other metal ions. Incorporation of a Rhodamine-6G fluorophore to a previously described sensor and optimization of the buffer system (detection with acetic acid at pH 5.25) enabled significant enhancement of the sensitivity (detection limit = 0.27 μg L-1) and selectivity. The optimized procedure using high-throughput microplates has been applied to tap and river waters with good results.

Abstract
Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N/S-CDs) were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method using gardenia fruit as precursor. The N/S-CDs are nearly spherical particles with a size of 2.1 nm and possess excellent fluorescence stability in a wide pH range and high NaCl concentrations, as well as under UV light irradiation. The absolute quantum yield (QY) without any surface modification reaches up to 10.7%. Meanwhile, the N/S-CDs can be quenched by Hg2+ (turn-off), while the quenched fluorescence can be recovered (turn-on) by introducing cysteine (Cys), with linear ranges of 2-20 μM for Hg2+and 0.1-2.0 μM for Cys. On the basis of the on-off-on sensing mode, the N/S-CDs can be used to detect Hg2+ and Cys. Hence, the N/S-CDs would be a promising sensor in environmental and biological analysis.

Abstract
A commercial cyanine dye IR-780 and a thioether-containing dicarboxylic acid ligand were used to construct the near-infrared fluorescent probe, which was used as a near-infrared fluorescent indicator for the determination of mercury ions in water and in living cells. This indicator displayed high specificity towards Hg2+ without any interference from other detecting species. Especially, the emission at 790 nm dramatically increased more than 25 times after interacting with Hg2+. The binding experiment showed that the indicator formed 1:1 complex with Hg2+. More, this indicator could be applied in the visualization of Hg2+ in living cells and measuring the Hg2+ concentration of tap-water sample.

Abstract
This research reports a new mercury adsorbent in which Fe3O4 as a core was embedded into the shell of ZIF-90 in a one-pot synthesis and the subsequent post synthesis modification (PSM) of its surface with cysteine covalently, via a Schiff's base reaction. Poly acrylic acid (PAA) was capped on the surface of nanoparticles to prevent agglomeration of the nanoparticles. In addition, -COOH groups of PAA coordinated with Zn2+ of ZIF-90 and this provided the platform for ZIF-90 to grow on the nanoparticles forming the core-shell structure. Based on the strong interactions between the thiol groups on the adsorbent and mercury ions as elucidated by the XPS analysis, the as-synthesized adsorbent showed selectivity for Hg2+. The sorbent exhibited high adsorption capacity of 900 mg g-1 towards Hg2+ as calculated at pH 4 and the adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second-order kinetics model better. The Hg2+ loaded adsorbent was easily regenerated and it maintained about 70 % efficiency after the third use. Low-cost, readily available and green materials, facile preparation, efficient removal and the breakthrough in three times recyclability give the novel ZIF-90 based hybrid nanoadsorbent wide prospects in the field of environmental remediation as a good adsorbent for Hg2+ removal in wastewater.

Abstract
Mercury ion (Hg2+) is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions which will cause permanent damage to the brain and kidneys. So, it is important to develop a sensitive, simple and reliable approach to detect Hg2+. In this work, we report a surface-enhanced Raman scatting (SERS) sensor by decorating the inner wall of capillary with 4,4'-dipyridyl (Dpy) functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The main advantage of this sensor is that it can collect samples directly by capillary force and carry out on-site analysis by combining portable Raman spectrometer. In the presence of Hg2+, the Dpy molecules would be separated from the surface of AgNPs and coordinated with Hg2+, resulting in a decrease in the SERS signal. A linear correlation of Raman intensity with Hg2+ concentrations from 1 to 100 part-per-billion (ppb) was obtained for quantitative analysis and the limit of detection (LOD) was determined to be 0.1 ppb. The good reproducibility and selectivity of the sensor were also demonstrated. In addition, the sensors were successfully applied to detect Hg2+ in real environmental water samples, and the sampling process provided operation convenience compared to conventional methods. These results indicated that these capillary sensors had great potential for Hg2+ detection in practical use.

Abstract
In the present study, activated carbon was prepared from corn cob. Corn cob by potassium hydroxide activation. SEM, BET, Raman, FTIR and XPS analysis methods were used to characterize the physical and chemical properties of activated carbon. The effects of adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, pH and initial Hg(II) concentration on mercury ion removal rate were studied. The specific surface area of this material is 1054.2 m2 g-1. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were used to verify the adsorption isotherms. The adsorption isotherms were simulated well by the Langmuir model, which implied that it is a monolayer adsorption process. The kinetic data conformed to the pseudo-second-order model, which implied that the predominant process is chemisorption.

Abstract
Ratiometric assays, which can effectively surmount external interference, have attracted extensive research interests. Herein, a novel ratiometric sensing platform for Hg2+ is designed based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with two different optical signals. Under a single excitation, N-CDs have two emission peaks around 668 nm and 412 nm, which are second-order scattering and fluorescence, respectively. Upon the addition of Hg2+, the weak scattering emission at 668 nm can be increased apparently, while the strong fluorescence intensity at 412 nm is weakened. Moreover, the ratio of scattering intensity to fluorescence intensity is linearly dependent on Hg2+ concentration (0.1-10 μM and 10-30 μM, respectively), and the detection limit is 66 nM. In addition, the ratiometric sensing mechanism is investigated in detail, which is due to the combined effect of aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching and scattering enhancement. Furthermore, the developed sensing approach holds a promising application for Hg2+ detection in actual samples. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Dual-emissive carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated for dual-channel ratiometric fluorometric determination of pH and mercury ion (Hg2+) and intracellular imaging. Dual-emissive CDs were synthesized by one-pot solvothermal treatment of cabbage. The CDs exhibited two distinctive fluorescence emissions at 500 and 678 nm under single excitation at 410 nm. The green emission (500 nm) had reversible linear response to pH (7.0-12.0) due to deprotonation and protonation of surface functional groups and their non-covalent interactions. On the other hand, the red emission (678 nm) had efficient and selective fluorescence response to Hg2+ by formation of non-emission complex between CDs and Hg2+. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for Hg2+ were 6.25 and 20.63 nM, respectively. The CDs have been successfully applied for label-free ratiometric fluorometric determination of pH and Hg2+ in fish and human serum samples with good recoveries (92.0-108.3%). In addition, the CDs had excellent photostability, low cytotoxicity, and good biocompatibility for intracellular imaging. All in all, the system was multi-functional in determination, high in sensitivity, and excellent in selectivity, which demonstrated wide and promising applicability for biosensing and bioimaging in the future. Abstract
The present work investigated the ability of algal biomass Chlorella vulgaris to remove mercury from aqueous solutions. The mercury biosorption process was studied through batch experiments 35 °C temperature with regard to the influence of contact time, initial mercury concentration, pH and desorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was registered at pH 6. The adsorption conduct of Hg(II) was defined by pseudo second order well rather pseudo first order as the experimental data (qe) come to an agreement with the calculated value. The kinetics of adsorption was fast and a high capacity of adsorption occurred within only 90 min. The adsorption data were signified by many models but Langmuir (qmax = 42. mg g−1) & Freundlich fitted well having regression coefficients near to unity. The thermodynamic parameters were also suited well as negative value of free energy cope up to spontaneity, positive value of the randomness described by ΔS attributed to affinity of Hg+2 towards algal bioadsorbant and high positive value of heat of enthalpy designates that the adsorption process is expected due to robust interactions between the Hg(II) ions and various functional groups on surface of algal bioadsorbant. Field emission scanning electron microscopy integrated with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis before and after adsorption of Hg(II) reveals the adsorption of metallic ions over the surface. FTIR study supported the existence of various functional groups (carboxylix, amines, hydroxyls, amides etc.) helped in adsorption. Continuous adsorption desorption experiments proved that algal cells was excellent biosorbents with potential for further development.

Abstract
Sensitive and selective determination of mercury ion (Hg2+) is critical for human health and environmental monitoring. Herein we construct an effective ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform by combining green fluorescent polymer carbon dots (PCDs) and red fluorescent tetraphenylporphyrin tetrasulfonic acid hydrate (TPPS) for specific and visual detection of Hg2+. The fluorescence of PCDs can be quenched by TPPS through inner filter effect (IEF). In the presence of both Mn2+ and Hg2+, however, Hg2+ can expedite the complexation of TPPS and Mn2+, which causes the decrease in both fluorescence and absorption of TPPS, accompanied by the fluorescence recovery of PCDs due to the subdued IFE between TPPS and PCDs. Based on the change of fluorescence signal, a ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform is constructed for specific and visual detection of Hg2+. The proposed approach presents a fine linear range for Hg2+ over the range of 10-200 nM with a detection limit of 0.038 nM. Moreover, an easily distinguishable fluorescence color change from pink to green with the increase of Hg2+ concentration can be observed by the naked eye under a UV lamp. Such a simple and effective method shows great potential for visual sensing of Hg2+ in on-site and resource-limited settings.

Abstract
A series of new ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes appending with thioether groups were designed, synthesized and characterized. The sensing ability of the complexes toward mercury ions were studied by electronic absorption and emission spectra, and the reaction of the complexes with mercury ions were also confirmed by ESI mass spectroscopy and 1HNMR spectroscopy. The thioether groups would react with mercury ion fast to form aldehyde group leading to the significant change in the spectra. The color of the complex changed from yellow to orange after addition of mercury ions, and the color of the emission changed from red orange to dark red with a large red shift (~80 nm). Importantly, these kinds of ruthenium(II) complexes show a unique recognition of mercury ions over other metal ions. The complexes with more thioether groups also showed a better sensitivity toward mercury ions, this is good strategy for the further design of the new phosphorescent probes for sensing of mercury ions.
