Infrared and Raman spectroscopic characterisation of the sulphate mineral creedite--Ca3Al2SO4(F,OH)·2H2O--and in comparison with the alums

A Strategy towards Light-Absorbing Coatings Based on Optically Black Nanoporous Alumina with Tailored Disorder

This work provides a conceptually new way of thinking about the light-absorbing mechanism in additive-free black porous anodic alumina (black PAA, or b-PAA) layers obtained via "burning" anodizing regime. The new insight into the controllable photonic effects in PAA allows the implementation of the optical blackening method based on the deliberate randomization of the initially well-ordered nanopore arrangement. The proposed black coloration mechanism rests solely on the destructive interference of light after its multiple scattering. Similar effects have been earlier considered for some natural or artificially created biomimetic structures (e.g., the so-called "moth eye effect", or the coloration mechanism in the Neurothemis tullia dragonfly wings). Comprehensive analysis confirmed that the chemical composition of b-PAA has only a minor influence on the color changes and the optical density increase, and that the light-absorbing properties most likely result from the structural effects. The new functional 2D materials exhibit strong adhesion to aluminum surface, are cost-effective and suitable for application under harsh thermal or UV-light conditions. They are potentially useful for manufacturing of optical devices or heat-resistant coatings in aerospace technologies, as well as solid supports for biological filtration and fluorescence imaging.

"Water-in-Sugar" Electrolytes Enable Ultrafast and Stable Electrochemical Naked Proton Storage

Proton is an ideal charge carrier for rechargeable batteries due to its small ionic radius, ultrafast diffusion kinetics and wide availability. However, in commonly used acid electrolytes, the co-interaction of polarized water and proton (namely hydronium) with electrode materials often causes electrode structural distortions. The hydronium adsorption on electrode surfaces also facilitates hydrogen evolution as an unwanted side reaction. Here, a "water-in-sugar" electrolyte with high concentration of glucose dissolved in acid to enable the naked proton intercalation, as well as an extended 3.9 V working potential window, is shown. A glucose-derived organic thin film is formed on electrode surface upon cycling. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the significant decrease of free water in bulk electrolytes, while density functional theory calculations indicate that glucose preferentially binds to the electrode surface which can inhibit water adsorption. The scarcity of free water and the protective organic film work in synergy to suppress water interactions with the electrode surface, which enables the naked proton (de)intercalation. The "water-in-sugar" electrolyte significantly enhances a MoO₃ electrode for stable cycling over 100 000 times. This facile electrolyte approach opens new avenues to aqueous electrochemistry and energy storage devices.

A Raman and infrared spectroscopic study of the sulphate mineral aluminite Al2(SO4)(OH)4·7H2O

The mineral aluminite has been studied using a number of techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy identifies multiple sulphate symmetric stretching modes in line with the three sulphate crystallographically different sites. Raman spectroscopy also identifies a low intensity band at 1069 cm(-1) which may be attributed to a carbonate symmetric stretching mode, indicating the presence of thaumasite. The observation of multiple bands in this ν4 spectral region offers evidence for the reduction in symmetry of the sulphate anion from Td to C2v or even lower symmetry. The Raman band at 3588 cm(-1) is assigned to the OH unit stretching vibration and the broad feature at around 3439 cm(-1) to water stretching bands. Water stretching vibrations are observed at 3157, 3294, 3378 and 3439 cm(-1). Vibrational spectroscopy enables an assessment of the molecular structure of aluminite to be made.

Vibrational spectroscopic characterization of the sulphate-halide mineral sulphohalite - implications for evaporites

The mineral sulphohalite - Na6(SO4)2FCl is a rare sodium halogen sulphate and occurs associated with evaporitic deposits. Sulphohalite formation is important in saline evaporites and in pipe scales. Sulphohalite is an anhydrous sulphate-halide with an apparent variable anion ratio of formula Na6(SO4)2FCl. Such a formula with oxyanions lends itself to vibrational spectroscopy. The Raman band at 1003cm(-1) is assigned to the (SO4)(2-) ν1 symmetric stretching mode. Shoulders to this band are found at 997 and 1010cm(-1). The low intensity Raman bands at 1128, 1120 and even 1132cm(-1) are attributed to the (SO4)(2-) ν3 antisymmetric stretching vibrations. Two symmetric sulphate stretching modes are observed indicating at least at the molecular level the non-equivalence of the sulphate ions in the sulphohalite structure. The Raman bands at 635 and 624cm(-1) are assigned to the ν4 SO4(2-) bending modes. The ν2 (SO4)(2-) bending modes are observed at 460 and 494cm(-1). The observation of multiple bands supports the concept of a reduction in symmetry of the sulphate anion from Td to C3v or even C2v. No evidence of bands attributable to the halide ions was found.
