Investigation of coordination properties of isolated adenine to copper metal: a systematic spectroscopic and DFT study

Characteristics of Cu(II)-modified aerobic granular sludge biocarbon in removal of doxycycline hydroxide

In this study, the biocarbon derived from aerobic granular sludge with different nutritive proportions was modified by Cu(NO₃)₂•3H₂O (Cu-BC) to improve its adsorption capacity of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX). The surface area, pores, functional groups, and element composition of biocarbon were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), the X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), respectively. Effects of DOX concentration, initial pH, and background electrolyte on adsorption effects of composite were analyzed. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics, and diffusion model were investigated. Results demonstrated that biocarbons which were prepared with aerobic granular sludge under different nutritive proportions presented different performances. The BET specific surface area of Cu-NaAC/AGS-BC was 260.1592 m²/g, and the micropore volume was 0.054101 cm³/g. The BET specific surface area of Cu-GLC /AGS-BC was only 10.6821 m²/g, and the micropore volume was 0.008687 cm³/g. Both kinds of modified biochar contain a large number of oxygen-containing functional groups. The highest adsorption efficiency of Cu-BC could reach 99.54%. The adsorption of DOX on two modified biocarbons conforms to the pseudo-second-order dynamic model and Temkin isothermal model.

Comparative efficiency of peanut shell and peanut shell biochar for removal of arsenic from water

Contamination of surface water and groundwater streams with carcinogenic chemicals such as arsenic (As) has been a major environmental issue worldwide, and requires significant attention to develop new and low-cost sorbents to treat As-polluted water. In the current study, arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) removal efficiency of peanut shell biochar (PSB) was compared with peanut shell (PS) in aqueous solutions. Sorption experiments showed that PSB possessed relatively higher As removal efficiency than PS, with 95% As(III) (at pH 7.2) and 99% As(V) (at pH 6.2) with 0.6 g L^-1 sorbent dose, 5 mg L^-1 initial As concentration, and 2 h equilibrium time. Experimental data followed a pseudo-second-order model for sorption kinetics showing the dominance of chemical interactions (surface complexation) between As and surface functional groups. The Langmuir model for sorption isotherm indicated that As was sorbed via a monolayer sorption process. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses revealed that the hydroxyl (-OH) and aromatic surface functional (C=O, C=C-C, and -C-H) groups contributed significantly in the sorption of both As species from aqueous solutions through surface complexation and/or electrostatic reactions. We demonstrate that the pyrolysis of abandoned PS yields a novel, low-cost, and efficient biochar which provides dual benefits of As-rich water treatment and a value-added sustainable strategy for solid waste disposal.

Facile synthesis of Cu(II) impregnated biochar with enhanced adsorption activity for the removal of doxycycline hydrochloride from water

In this study, the effect factors and mechanisms of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) adsorption on copper nitrate modified biochar (Cu-BC) was investigated. Cu-BC absorbent was synthesized through calcination of peanut shells biomass at 450°C and then impregnation with copper nitrate. The Cu-BC has exhibited excellent sorption efficiency about 93.22% of doxycycline hydrochloride from aqueous solution, which was double higher than that of the unmodified biochar. The experimental results suggest that the adsorption efficiency of DOX on the Cu-BC is dominated by the strong complexation, electrostatic interactions between DOX molecules and the Cu-BC samples. Comprehensively considering the cost, efficiency and the application to realistic water, the Cu-BC hold the significant potential for enhancing the effectiveness to remove DOX from water.

Vibrational and quantum chemical investigation of cyclization of thiosemicarbazide group in 1-benzoyl-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide

1-Benzoyl-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide (H3bpt) was treated with acid - base in one sequence and base - acid in other sequence, both of which lead to ring formation of thiosemicarbazide group, giving N-phenyl-5-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine (Hppta) in the first case and 4,5-diphenyl-2,4-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione (Hdptt) in the second case. The primary (H3bpt) as well as the resulting compounds (Hppta & Hdptt) has been characterized by elemental analyses, NMR, FTIR and Raman spectroscopic techniques. The quantum chemical calculations of the compounds are performed using DFT/B3LYP/6311G(d,p) method for geometry optimizations and also for prediction of the molecular properties. The cyclization is confirmed by disappearance of many bands belonging to the open chain subgroups of H3bpt such as; NH stretching, NH bending, CN stretching, NH puckering, CO stretching etc. The ring formation of 1-benzoyl-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide (H3bpt) has been further confirmed by the appearance of many bands belonging to the closed ring of thiosemicarbazide in the resulting compounds Hppta and Hdptt.
