Characterization of the sulphate mineral amarantite - Fe2(3+)(SO4)O·7H2O using infrared, Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetry

The pH-sensitve oxygenation of FeS: Mineral transformation and immobilization of Cr(VI)

Iron sulfide (FeS) has been widely used to reduce toxic Cr(VI) into Cr(III) in anoxic aquatic environments, where pH could strongly influence Cr(VI) removal. However, it remains unclear how pH regulates the fate and transformation of FeS under oxic conditions and the immobilization of Cr(VI). The results of this study showed that typical pH conditions of natural aquatic environment significantly affected the mineral transformation of FeS. Under acidic conditions, FeS was principally transformed to goethite, amarantite, and elemental sulfur with minor lepidocrocite through proton-promoted dissolution and oxidation. Instead, under basic conditions, the main products were lepidocrocite and elemental sulfur via surface-mediated oxidation. In typical acidic or basic aquatic environment, the pronounced pathway for the oxygenation of FeS solids may alter their ability to remove Cr(VI). Longer oxygenation impeded Cr(VI) removal at acidic pH, and a decreasing ability to reduce Cr(VI) caused a drop in Cr(VI) removal performance. Cr(VI) removal decreased from 733.16 to 36.82 mg g^-1 with the duration of FeS oxygenation increasing to 5760 min at pH 5.0. In contrast, newly generated pyrite from brief oxygenation of FeS improved Cr(VI) reduction at basic pH, followed by a drop in Cr(VI) removal performance due to the impaired reduction capacity with increasing to the complete oxygenation. Cr(VI) removal increased from 669.58 to 804.83 mg g^-1 with increasing oxygenation time to 5 min and then decreased to 26.27 mg g^-1 after the full oxygenation for 5760 min at pH 9.0. These findings provide insight into the dynamic transformation of FeS in oxic aquatic environments with various pHs and the impact on Cr(VI) immobilization.

Resource-recycling and energy-saving innovation for iron removal in hydrometallurgy: Crystal transformation of ferric hydroxide precipitates by hydrothermal treatment

In hydrometallurgy industry, the accumulation of iron removal residues containing heavy metal elements and toxic elements poses great threats to ecological systems. We propose a novel method to prevent the production of hazardous iron removal residues: firstly, neutralization precipitation is used to purify iron ions in solution; after sedimentation of the obtained suspension, only dense underflow is subjected to hydrothermal reaction, in which ferric hydroxide transforms into hematite crystal. Results showed that ferric hydroxide precipitated into a thin sedimentation layer at temperature greater than 60 °C. For hydrothermal treatment of the sedimentation layer, a high hydrothermal reaction temperature was conducive to complete transformation of ferric hydroxide into hematite. The precipitated ferric hydroxide firstly changed from the crystallite of goethite or lepidocrocite to amorphous particles, and then gradually formed spherical α-Fe₂O₃ monocrystalline with diameter of around 50 nm, as indicated by TEM and XRD results. At 200 °C, hematite precipitates with iron content of about 65% can be obtained. For iron-containing zinc/nickel/cobalt sulfate solution, controlling hydrothermal reaction temperature and acidity of the underflow solution can effectively avoid the generation of zinc/nickel/cobalt hydroxides or subsulfates in the hematite precipitates, thereby significantly reducing the loss of those valuable metals.

Comparison of coagulative colloidal microbubbles with monomeric and polymeric inorganic coagulants for tertiary treatment of distillery wastewater

The flotation using coagulative colloidal gas aphrons (CCGAs) is of great potential in effectively removing the recalcitrant dissolved organic matter (DOM) and colorants from the bio-chemically treated cassava distillery wastewater. As bubble modifier, the monomeric and polymeric inorganic coagulants need to be studied considering their distinct influence on the surfactant/coagulant complex, the properties of colloidal aphrons as well as the process performance and mechanisms. Such studies help to create robust CCGAs with high flotation potential. In this work, the commonly-used monomeric and polymeric Al(III)- and Fe(III)-coagulants were combined with the cationic surfactant - cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to generate CCGAs. The CCGAs functionalized with Al(III)-coagulants (both monomeric and polymeric ones) were featured as small bubble size, strong stability and high air content. Particularly, the monomeric Al(III)-coagulant (AlCl₃ in this work) resulted in low surface tension and high foamability when being mixed with CTAB in the bubble generation solution. Those CCGAs achieved high removal efficiencies of DOM and colorants at low coagulant concentrations. The molecular weight of DOM in effluent was well controlled below 1 kDa by CCGAs. For the flocs obtained from CCGA-flotation, the characteristic Raman band of DOM and colorants showed the layer-by-layer variation of Raman intensity which decreased from the outer layer to the center. In contrast with the conventional coagulation-flotation, the reduction of coagulant dosage by CCGAs was 67% (AlCl₃), 25% (polyaluminum chloride), 60% (Fe₂(SO₄)₃) and 40% (polyferric sulfate). The sludge production could then be largely reduced, and meanwhile, the retention time was shortened by 9.5 min.

A Raman and infrared spectroscopic study of the sulphate mineral aluminite Al2(SO4)(OH)4·7H2O

The mineral aluminite has been studied using a number of techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy identifies multiple sulphate symmetric stretching modes in line with the three sulphate crystallographically different sites. Raman spectroscopy also identifies a low intensity band at 1069 cm(-1) which may be attributed to a carbonate symmetric stretching mode, indicating the presence of thaumasite. The observation of multiple bands in this ν4 spectral region offers evidence for the reduction in symmetry of the sulphate anion from Td to C2v or even lower symmetry. The Raman band at 3588 cm(-1) is assigned to the OH unit stretching vibration and the broad feature at around 3439 cm(-1) to water stretching bands. Water stretching vibrations are observed at 3157, 3294, 3378 and 3439 cm(-1). Vibrational spectroscopy enables an assessment of the molecular structure of aluminite to be made.

Vibrational spectroscopic characterization of the sulphate-halide mineral sulphohalite - implications for evaporites

The mineral sulphohalite - Na6(SO4)2FCl is a rare sodium halogen sulphate and occurs associated with evaporitic deposits. Sulphohalite formation is important in saline evaporites and in pipe scales. Sulphohalite is an anhydrous sulphate-halide with an apparent variable anion ratio of formula Na6(SO4)2FCl. Such a formula with oxyanions lends itself to vibrational spectroscopy. The Raman band at 1003cm(-1) is assigned to the (SO4)(2-) ν1 symmetric stretching mode. Shoulders to this band are found at 997 and 1010cm(-1). The low intensity Raman bands at 1128, 1120 and even 1132cm(-1) are attributed to the (SO4)(2-) ν3 antisymmetric stretching vibrations. Two symmetric sulphate stretching modes are observed indicating at least at the molecular level the non-equivalence of the sulphate ions in the sulphohalite structure. The Raman bands at 635 and 624cm(-1) are assigned to the ν4 SO4(2-) bending modes. The ν2 (SO4)(2-) bending modes are observed at 460 and 494cm(-1). The observation of multiple bands supports the concept of a reduction in symmetry of the sulphate anion from Td to C3v or even C2v. No evidence of bands attributable to the halide ions was found.
