Solvent influence on the excited states of the oxo form of barbituric acid and the mechanisms of the out-of-plane non-radiative elongation of the N-H bond: a comparative theoretical and experimental study

Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Copolymeric Colloids as Multicolor Emission, Fuel-Free, UV- and Visible-Light-Actuated Micropumps

Light-actuated micromachines are of enormous interest due to their ability to harvest light for triggering catalytic reactions to acquire free energy for mechanical work. This work presents an inorganic-organic hybrid copolymeric poly(cyclotriphosphazene-co-barbituric acid) colloid, which displays multiwavelength excited emission and catalytic activities, exploiting the unique structural, chemical, and optical features of inorganic heterocyclic ring hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and organic co-monomer barbituric acid. Specifically, this work reveals particle-resolved unusual multicolor emission under excitation with the same or different wavelengths of light using fluorescence microscopy. The result is rationalized by density functional theory studies. In this work, the authors find that emission is coincident with fluorometric measurements, and the photocatalytic properties are anticipated from the overall band structure. This work also demonstrates the use of these colloids as micropumps, which can be remotely activated by UV, blue, and green lights under fuel-free conditions, and ascribe the behavior to ionic diffusiophoresis arising from light-triggered generation of H⁺ and other charged species. This work offers a new class of polymeric colloids with multiple-wavelength excited emission and catalytic activities, which is expected to open new opportunities in the design of fuel-free, photo-actuated micromachines and active systems.

Photoinduced phenomena in water solution of melamine explaining the photostability of the compound

Two tautomers of melamine (triamino and imino-diamino) were studied at the BLYP/aug-cc-pVDZ theoretical level. It was found that the two tautomers are bridged with the ¹πσ^* excited-state reaction path. The high photostability of melamine in water solution was explained with the mechanism of ring deformation which occurs along the ¹ππ^* excited-state reaction path. The two mechanisms are investigated at the TD BLYP level of theory using the linear interpolation in internal coordinates approach.

Far-Red/Near-Infrared Emissive (1,3-Dimethyl)barbituric Acid-Based AIEgens for High-Contrast Detection of Metastatic Tumors in the Lung

Despite of the enthusiastic research in aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) in recent years, the ones that can be smoothly used for sophisticated biomedical applications such as in vivo bioimaging of pulmonary metastatic tumors during surgery are still limited. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a new series of far-red/near-infrared (FR/NIR) fluorescent AIEgens that consist of methoxy-substituted tetraphenylethene (TPE) as the electron-donating moiety, (1,3-dimethyl)barbituric acid as the electron-withdrawing moiety, and different π-bridge units. As compared to benzene or 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, using thiophene as the π-conjugation unit between the donor and acceptor results in a relatively higher absolute fluorescence quantum yield (14.5 %) in water when formulating the corresponding AIEgens into nanoparticles (AIE dots) with an amphiphilic co-polymer as the doping matrix. The highly FR/NIR-emissive thiophene-based AIE dots are demonstrated to be potent for intraoperative detection of pulmonary metastatic tumors, particularly the micro-sized ones, with excellent signal-to-background ratio.

Synthesis, density functional theory calculations and luminescence of lanthanide complexes with 2,6-bis[(3-methoxybenzylidene)hydrazinocarbonyl] pyridine Schiff base ligand

A pyridine-diacylhydrazone Schiff base ligand, L = 2,6-bis[(3-methoxy benzylidene)hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine was prepared and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Lanthanide complexes, Ln-L, {[LnL(NO₃ )₂ ]NO₃ .xH₂ O (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy and Er)} were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, thermal analysis (TGA/DTGA), mass spectrometry (MS), Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Ln-L complexes are isostructural with four binding sites provided by two nitro groups along with four coordination sites for L. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on L and its cationic [LnL(NO₃ )₂ ]⁺ complexes were carried out at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. The FT-IR vibrational wavenumbers were computed and compared with the experimentally values. The luminescence investigations of L and Ln-L indicated that Tb-L and Eu-L complexes showed the characteristic luminescence of Tb(III) and Eu(III) ions. Ln-L complexes show higher antioxidant activity than the parent L ligand.
