Synthesis of some metallophthalocyanines with dimethyl 5-(phenoxy)-isophthalate substituents and evaluation of their antioxidant-antibacterial activities

Biofouling mitigation of Nb2AlC and Mo3AlC2 MXene-precursors doped polyether sulfone mixed matrix membranes for pathogen microorganisms

This study explores the incorporation of Nb2AlC and Mo3AlC2 MAX phases, known for their nano-layered structure, into polyether sulfone (PES) membranes to enhance their antifouling and permeability properties for pathogen microorganism filtration against bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The composite membranes were characterized for their structural and morphological properties, and their performance in mitigating biofouling was evaluated. The structural characterizations have been performed for all the prepared MAX phases and corresponding composite membranes. The antioxidant ability of Nb2AlC and Mo3AlC2 MAX phases was defined by the DPPH radical scavenging assay, and the highest antioxidant ability was found to be 59.35 %, while 53.69 % scavenging potential was recorded at 100 mg/L. The percentage scavenging ability was raised with an increase in concentrations. The antimicrobial properties of MAX phases, evaluated as the minimum inhibitory concentration, were stated against several pathogen microorganisms. The tested compounds of Nb2AlC and Mo3AlC2 composites containing MAX phases exhibited excellent chemical nuclease activity, and it was determined that Nb2AlC caused double strand DNA cleavage activity while Mo3AlC2 induced the complete fragmentation of the DNA molecule. Biofilm inhibition of Nb2AlC and Mo3AlC2 MAX phases was studied against Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the maximum biofilm inhibition of Nb2AlC and Mo3AlC2 MAX phases was found to be 77.15 % and 69.07 % against S. aureus and also 69.74 % and 65.01 % against P. aeruginosa. Furthermore, Nb2AlC and Mo3AlC2 MAX phases demonstrated excellent E. coli growth inhibition of 100 % at 125 and 250 mg/L.

Designing of chitosan/gelatin based nanocomposite films integrated with Vachellia nilotica gum carbon dots for smart food packaging applications

Microbial growth and exposure to UV light is a persistent global concern resulting in food spoilage, therefore, smart packaging is crucial for the availability of safer and quality food. Present work describes fabrication of chitosan (CH) and gelatin (GL) based nanocomposite films by introducing green source, highly fluorescent Vachillia nilotica gum-derived carbon dots (VNG-CDs). The VNG-CDs and incorporated CH/GL nanocomposite films were characterized by UV-Visible, FTIR, XRD, SEM and TGA analysis. The FTIR and XRD data revealed that VNG-CDs, chitosan, gelatin, and glycerol are combined/interlinked to form homogeneous nanocomposite films. The inclusion of VNG-CDs to CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite film efficiently enhanced the thermal stability and improved mechanical properties. VNG-CDs added to films markedly blocked the ultraviolet light and their effectiveness improved as concentration of CDs increases, being >90 % in UVC (200-280 nm) region. The prepared CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite films manifested radical scavenging activity, reducing capability and also excellently inhibited growth of E. coli, K. pneumonia and S. aureus bacteria. The viability of CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite films examined using banana as a model fruit extending the storage time by two weeks. In conclusion, CH/GL films containing VNG-CDs can be developed into smart packaging materials with enhanced protection and antimicrobial properties.

Antibacterial and antioxidant activity of gold and silver nanoparticles in dextran-polyacrylamide copolymers

Search for new antimicrobial agents is of great significance due to the issue of antimicrobial resistance, which nowadays has become more important than many diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity and biological effects of a dextran-graft-polyacrylamide (D-PAA) polymer-nanocarrier with/without silver or gold nanoparticles (AgNPs/D-PAA and AuNPs/D-PAA, respectively) to analyze their potential to replace or supplement conventional antibiotic therapy. The toxicity of nanocomplexes against eukaryotic cells was assessed on primary dermal fibroblasts using scratch, micronucleus and proliferation assays. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazylradical) assay was used to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of D-PAA, AgNPs/D-PAA and AuNPs/D-PAA. DNA cleavage, antimicrobial and biofilm inhibition effects of nanocomplexes were investigated. Nanocomplexes were found to be of moderate toxicity against fibroblasts with no genotoxicity observed. AgNPs/D-PAA reduced motility and proliferation at lower concentrations compared with the other studied nanomaterials. AgNPs/D-PAA and AuNPs/D-PAA showed radical scavenging capacities in a dose-dependent manner. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs/D-PAA against various bacteria was found to be much higher compared to D-PAA and AuNPs/D-PAA, especially against E. hirae, E. faecalis and S. aureus, respectively. D-PAA, AgNPs/D-PAA and AuNPs/D-PAA showed DNA-cleaving and biofilm inhibitory activity, while AgNPs/D-PAA displayed the highest anti-biofilm activity. AgNPs/D-PAA and AuNPs/D-PAA were characterized by good antimicrobial activity. According to the findings of the study, AgNPs/D-PAA and AuNPs/D-PAA can be evaluated as alternatives for the preparation of new antimicrobial agents, the fight against biofilms, sterilization and disinfection processes. Our findings confirm the versatility of nanosystems based on dextran-polyacrylamide polymers and indicate that AgNPs/D-PAA and AuNPs/D-PAA can be evaluated as alternatives for the preparation of novel antimicrobial agents.

Novel extracellular synthesized silver nanoparticles using thermophilic Anoxybacillus flavithermus and Geobacillus stearothermophilus and their evaluation as nanodrugs

In this investigation, two new thermophilic bacteria were isolated. The new isolates were characterized by 16S rRNA, biochemical, morphological, and physiological analyzes and the isolates were identified as Geobacillus stearothermophilus strain Gecek20 and thermophilic Anoxybacillus flavithermus strain Gecek19. Various biological activities of extracellular Ag-NPs synthesized from thermophilic G. stearothermophilus strain Gecek20 and thermophilic A. flavithermus strain Gecek19 were evaluated. The produced NPs were analyzed by SEM, SEM-EDX, and XRD analyses. The antioxidant abilities of new synthesized Ag-NPs from thermophilic G. stearothermophilus strain Gecek20 (T1-Ag-NPs) and new synthesized Ag-NPs from thermophilic A. flavithermus strain Gecek19 (T2-Ag-NPs) were studied by DPPH inhibition and metal chelating ability. The highest DPPH and metal chelating abilities of T1-Ag-NPs and T2-Ag-NPs at 200 mg/L concentration were 93.17 and 90.85%, and 75.80 and 83.64%, respectively. The extracellular green synthesized T1-Ag-NPs and T2-AgN-Ps showed DNA nuclease activity at all tested concentrations. Moreover, both new synthesized Ag-NPs had antimicrobial activity against the strains studied, especially on Gram positive bacteria. T1-Ag-NPs and T2-AgNPs also showed powerful Escherichia coli growth inhibition. The highest biofilm inhibition percentages of T1-Ag-NPs and T2-Ag-NPs against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were 100.0%, respectively, at 500 mg/L.

Fluorinated Phthalocyanine/Silver Nanoconjugates for Multifunctional Biological Applications

In this study, a new phthalonitrile derivative namely 4-[(2,4-difluorophenyl)ethynyl]phthalonitrile (1) and its metal phthalocyanines (2 and 3) were synthesized. The resultant compounds were conjugated to silver nanoparticles and characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. The biological properties of compounds (1-3), their nanoconjugates (4-6), and silver nanoparticles (7) were examined for the first time in this study. The antioxidant activities of biological candidates (1-7) were studied by applying the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. The highest antioxidant activity was obtained 97.47 % for 200 mg/L manganese phthalocyanine-silver nanoconjugates (6). The antimicrobial and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) activities of biological candidates (1-7) were examined using a micro-dilution assay. The highest MIC value was obtained 8 mg/L for nanoconjugate 6 against E. hirae. The studied compounds and their silver nanoconjugates exhibited high APDT activities against all the studied microorganisms. The most effective APDT activities were obtained 4 mg/L for nanoconjugates (5 and 6) against L. pneumophila and E. hirae, respectively. All the studied biological candidates displayed high cell viability inhibition activities against E. coli cell growth. The biofilm inhibition activities of the tested biological candidates were also investigated against S. aureus and P. Aeruginosa. Biological candidates (1-6) can be considered efficient metal nanoparticle-based materials for multi-disciplinary biological applications.

A comparative study of iron nanoflower and nanocube in terms of antibacterial properties

It is known that heavy metal containing nanomaterials can easily prevent the formation of microbial cultures. The emergence of new generation epidemic diseases in the last 2 years has increased the importance of both personal and environmental hygiene. For this reason, in addition to preventing the spread of diseases, studies on alternative disinfectant substances are also carried out. In this study, the antibacterial activity of nanoflower and nanocube, which are easily synthesized and nanoparticle species containing iron, were compared. The antioxidant abilities of new synthesized NF@FeO(OH) and NC@α-Fe2O3 were tested by DPPH scavenging activity assay. The highest DPPH inhibition was achieved with NC@α-Fe2O3 as 71.30% at 200 mg/L. NF@FeO(OH) and NC@α-Fe2O3 demonstrated excellent DNA cleavage ability. The antimicrobial capabilities of NF@FeO(OH) and NC@α-Fe2O3 were analyzed with micro dilution procedure. In 500 mg/L, the antimicrobial activity was 100%. In addition to these, the biofilm inhibition of NF@FeO(OH) and NC@α-Fe2O3 were investigated against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa and it was found that they showed significant antibiofilm inhibition. It is suggested that additional studies can be continued to be developed and used as an antibacterial according to the results of the nanoparticles after various toxicological test systems.

Antifouling and antibacterial performance evaluation of polyethersulfone membranes modified with AZ63 alloy

Antibacterial membranes have attracted researchers' interest in recent years as a possible approach for dealing with biofouling on the membrane surface. This research aims to see if blending AZ63 Mg alloy into a polyethersulphone (PES) membrane can improve antifouling and separation properties. The composite membranes' pure water flux continued to increase from pristine PES to PES/AZ63 2.00 wt%. The results showed that PES/AZ63 2.00 wt% membrane supplied the highest permeate flux of E. coli. The steady-state fluxes of AZ63 composite membranes were 113.24, 104.38 and 44.79 L/m²h for PES/AZ63 2.00 wt%, 1.00 wt%, and 0.50 wt%, respectively. The enhanced biological activity of AZ63 was studied based on antioxidant activity, DNA cleavage, antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, bacterial viability inhibition and photodynamic antimicrobial therapy studies. The maximum DPPH scavenging activity was determined as 81.25% with AZ63. AZ63 indicated good chemical nuclease activity and also showed moderate antimicrobial activity against studied strains. The highest biofilm inhibition of AZ63 was 83.25% and 71.63% towards P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, respectively. The cell viability inhibition activity of AZ63 was found as 96.34% against E. coli. The photodynamic antimicrobial therapy results displayed that AZ63 demonstrated 100% bacterial inhibition when using E. coli.

New AB3-type porphyrins with piperidine and morpholine motifs; synthesis and photo-physicochemical and biological properties

In this study, new unsymmetrical meso-tetraaryl AB₃-type porphyrins 1 and 2 were successfully synthesized by the reaction of p-bromobenzaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde with pyrrole in propionic acid. AB₃-type porphyrin building blocks with hydroxyl functionality (1 and 2) were further used to generate both covalently linked metal free and Zn(II) porphyrins 3-6 having piperidine and morpholine heterocyclic units. These novel compounds were characterized by using ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FT-IR and MALDI-TOF spectrophotometry. The photophysical and photochemical properties of compounds 1-6 were investigated by employing UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy in tetrahydrofuran (THF). From the view of biological properties, the antioxidant capacities of porphyrins were determined by using DPPH radical scavenging activity and 2 was determined as the most potent porphyrin analog with a value of 98.42% at 200 mg L^-1. All the targeted compounds displayed significant DNA nuclease activity. In addition, the antimicrobial potential of compounds 1-6 was also investigated by a micro-dilution process and 2 was found to be the most effective candidate against the tested microbial strains. The newly synthesized porphyrins also showed 100% microbial cell viability inhibition against E. coli at all examined concentrations. In terms of biofilm inhibition activity, the best results for the maximum photodynamic antimicrobial biofilm inhibition of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa were obtained by compound 2 with the values of 99.75% and 93.39%, respectively.

Green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles derived from water and methanol extract of Centaurea solstitialis leaves and tested for antimicrobial activity and dye decolorization capability

In this research, nanoparticles derived from water extract of Centaurea solstitialis leaves were used as green adsorbent in Fenton reaction for Reactive Red 180 (RR180) and Basic Red 18 (BR18) dyes removal. At optimum operating conditions, nanoparticles proved high performance in the tested dyes removal with more than 98% of removal elimination. The free-radical scavenging, DNA nuclease, biofilm inhibition capability, antimicrobial activity, microbial cell viability, and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy activities of the iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO-NPs) derived from water and methanol extract of plant were investigated. Each of the following analysis: SEM-EDX, XRD, and Zeta potential was implemented for the prepared NPs characterization and to describe their morphology, composition and its behavior in an aqueous solution, respectively. It was found that, the DPPH scavenging activities increased when the amount of nanoparticles increased. The highest radical scavenging activity achieved with FeO-NPs derived from water extract of plant as 97.41% at 200 mg/L. The new green synthesized FeO-NPs demonstrated good DNA cleavage activity. FeO-NPs showed good in vitro antimicrobial activities against human pathogens. The results showed that both synthesized FeO-NPs displayed 100% antimicrobial photodynamic therapy activity after LED irradiation. The water extract of FeO-NPs and methanol extract of FeO-NPs also showed a significant biofilm inhibition.

Antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of phenolic extracts from walnut (Juglans regia L.) green husk by using pressure-driven membrane process

In this study, antioxidant (DPPH and metal chelating), DNA cleavage, biofilm, and antimicrobial properties of extracted phenol from the walnut green husk (WGH) and its different concentrate and permeate samples were evaluated. For maximum phenolic compound extraction from the WGH first, the effects of solvent type (deionized water, methanol, n-hexane, acetone, and ethanol), solvent temperature (25-75 °C), and extraction time (0.5-24 h) were optimized. Then to concentrate phenolic compounds a pressure-driven membrane process was used with four different membrane types. The phenol contents of the concentrate samples were found to be microfiltration (MF) concentrate 4400 mg/L, ultrafiltration (UF) concentrate 4175 mg/L, nanofiltration (NF) concentrate 8155 mg/L, and reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate 8100 mg/L. LC-MSMS was used to determine the quantification of phenolic compounds in permeate and concentrate streams. In addition, all of the concentrate samples with high phenol content showed a high antioxidant activity as 100% with MF concentrate, UF concentrate, NF concentrated and RO concentrated. Likewise, concentrate samples were found to have very high antibiofilm activity as 82.86% for NF concentrate againts S. aureus, 85.80% for NF concentrate against P. aureginosa, 80.95% for RO concentrate against S. aureus, and 83.61% for RO-concentrate against P. aureginosa. When the antimicrobial activity of the extracted phenol from WGH and its different concentrate and permeate samples were evaluated by micro dilution and disk diffusion methods, it was found that the ability of the concentrate samples to inhibit bacterial growth was much higher than permeate ones. In addition, extracted phenol from WGH and its different concentrate and permeate samples showed significant DNA nuclease activity.

Multicolor Emitting Carbon Dot-Reinforced PVA Composites as Edible Food Packaging Films and Coatings with Antimicrobial and UV-Blocking Properties

Active food packaging has become attractive because of the possibility to provide a longer shelf-life by loading functional agents into the packages to maintain the quality of food products. Herein, photoluminescent and transparent polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based composites embedding multicolor fluorescent carbon dots (CD/PVA) were prepared by the solvent casting method. The prepared CDs emit a strong and stable fluorescence in solution while the CD/PVA composite films were transparent, flexible, and showed UV-blocking activity with a strong fluorescence emission. Blue color-emitting CDs showed the highest UV blockage at UVA (87.04%), UVB (87.04%), and UVC (92.22%) regions while PVA alone absorbed only less than 25% of the light in all UV regions. UV blockage capacity was shown to be decreased by half, in line with the emission color shift from blue to red. Thermal properties of the PVA film were improved by the addition of CDs to the polymer, and in vitro cell viability tests showed that none of the CDs were cytotoxic against the human lung fibroblast healthy cell line (MRC-F cells) when integrated into the PVA. The antimicrobial activity of CD/PVA nanofilms was qualitatively determined. The prepared films exhibited good antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria with mild antioxidant and metal chelating activity, and significant inhibition of biofilm formation with a strong link with emitted color and the concentration of the composites. Green- and red-emitting CD/PVA with the highest antimicrobial activity were then analyzed and compared with the plane PVA employing their effect on the shelf-life of strawberries as a model for perishable foods. Fresh strawberries dip coated with CD/PVA and PVA were monitored over time, and virtual evaluations showed that CDs/PVA film coating resulted in reduced weight and moisture loss and significantly inhibited the fungal growth and spoiling for over 6 days at RT and 12 days at fridge conditions maintaining the visual appearance and natural color of the fruit. The findings in this work indicated the potential of reported CD as non-cytotoxic, UV-blocking antimicrobial additives for the development of edible coatings and packages for their use in the food industry, as well as pharmaceutical and healthcare applications.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles from red and green parts of the pistachio hulls and their various in-vitro biological activities

In this study, synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out utilizing the red and green parts of the pistachio hulls then their several biological activities were investigated. The DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) activities of the AgNPs synthesized from red pistachio hulls extracts (PhR-AgNPs) and green pistachio hulls extracts (PhG-AgNPs) were investigated. The DPPH scavenging capability at 200 mg/L concentration of PhR-AgNPs was around 93.01% however PhG-AgNPs displayed 91.00%. The synthesized PhR-AgNPs and PhG-AgNPs acted on the E. coli plasmid DNA, causing its complete degradation and exhibiting effective chemical nuclease activity. Furthermore, PhR-AgNPs and PhG-AgNPs showed quite good antimicrobial activity against the studied strains with a range of the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 8-16 mg/L. Moreover, it was observed that both pistachio hulls coated with AgNPs were highly effective in inhibiting the biofilm generation studied strains. Moreover, PhR-AgNP and PhG-AgNP displayed a completely inhibition effect on cellular viability of E. coli with 100% at 125 mg/L.

Novel axially symmetric and unsymmetric silicon(IV) phthalocyanines having anti-inflammatory groups: synthesis, characterization and their biological properties

New asymmetric Si(IV)Pc (1), monomeloxicammonotriethyleneglycolmonomethylether (phthalocyaninano)silicone, axially ligated with meloxicam as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), or triethylene glycol monomethyl ether and symmetric Si(IV)Pc (2), diclofenac(phthalocyaninano)silicone, axially ligated with two diclofenac as NSAID, were synthesized and characterized as antioxidant and antimicrobial agents together with polyoxo-SiPc (3), ditriethyleneglycolmonomethylether(phthalocyaninano)silicone, and SiPc(OH)₂ (4), dihydroxy(phthalocyaninano)silicone. The photophysical and photochemical properties of these compounds were investigated. Then, antioxidant assays, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferrous ion chelating activities, were performed for these Si(IV) phthalocyanine derivatives (1, 2, 3 and 4). The highest DPPH scavenging activity of 73.48% was achieved with compound 2 and the highest ferrous chelating ability of 66.42% was obtained with compound 3. The results of the antioxidant assays indicated that Pc derivatives 1, 2 and 3 have remarkable superoxide radical scavenging activities, and moderate 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl activities and metal chelating activities. The antimicrobial effects of the Si(IV) phthalocyanine compounds were studied against six pathogenic bacteria and two pathogenic microfungi. The results for the antimicrobial activity of these compounds indicated that Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212) was the most sensitive microorganism and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Legionella pneumophila subsp. pneumophila (ATCC 33152) were the most resistant microorganisms against the tested compounds. The DNA cleavage ability and microbial cell viability of these compounds were studied. The studied compounds demonstrated excellent DNA nuclease activity and exhibited 100% cell viability inhibition at 500 mg L^-1. Also, the antimicrobial photodynamic therapy of the compounds was tested against Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and significant photodynamic antimicrobial activity was observed. In addition, the effect of phthalocyanines on biofilm inhibition produced by Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) was also tested and 3 showed excellent biofilm inhibition of 82.14%.

Photophysicochemical, sonochemical, and biological properties of novel hexadeca-substituted phthalocyanines bearing fluorinated groups

This study presents the preparation of a novel tetra-substituted phthalonitrile (1), namely, 3,6-bis(hexyloxy)-4,5-bis(4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenoxy)phthalonitrile (1) and its metal-free (2)/metal {M = Zn (3), Cu (4), Co (5), Lu(CH₃COO) (6), Lu (7)} phthalocyanines. A series of various spectroscopic methods (UV-vis, FT-IR, mass, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy) were performed for the characterization of the newly synthesized compounds. The potential of compounds 2, 3, and 6 as photosensitizing materials for photodynamic and sonophotodynamic therapies was evaluated by photophysical, photochemical, and sonochemical methods. The highest singlet quantum yields were obtained for the zinc phthalocyanine derivative 3 by performing photochemical and sonochemical methods. In addition, several biological activities of the new compounds 1-7 were investigated. The newly synthesized phthalocyanines exhibited excellent DPPH scavenging activity and also DNA nuclease activity. The antimicrobial activity of the new compounds was evaluated by the disc diffusion assay. Effective microbial cell viability inhibition was observed with phthalocyanine macromolecules. The photodynamic antimicrobial therapy of the phthalocyanines showed 100% bacterial inhibition when compared to the control. They also exhibited significant biofilm inhibition activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. These results indicate that new phthalocyanines are promising photodynamic antimicrobial therapies for the treatment of infectious diseases.

Investigation of the antifouling properties of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes by blending of boron nitride quantum dots

This study aims to investigate the modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membrane with boron nitride quantum dots (BNQD) for improving the antifouling performance. The composite membranes were synthesized by blending different amounts of BNQD (0.50, 1.00, and 2.00 wt.%) into PES with the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. UV-vis absorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize BNQD. Moreover, porosity, pore size, contact angle, permeability, bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection, and antifouling properties were determined for composite membranes. The enhanced biological activity of BNQD was investigated based on antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, bacterial viability inhibition, and DNA cleavage studies. The BNQD showed 19.35 % DPPH radical scavenging activity and 76.45 % ferrous ion chelating activity at 500 mg/L. They also exhibited good chemical nuclease activity at all concentrations. BNQD had moderate antibacterial activity against all tested microorganisms. Biofilm inhibition percentage of BNQD was determined as 82.31 % at 500 mg/L. Cell viability assay demonstrated that the BNQD showed strong cell viability inhibition 99.9 % at the concentration of 1000 mg/L. The porosity increased from 56.83 ± 1.17%-61.83 ± 1.17 % while BNQD concentration increased from 0 to 2.00 wt%. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of BNQD nanocomposite membranes also increased from 75.42 ± 0.56° to 65.34 ± 0.25°. The mean pore radius is far slightly changed from 16.47 ± 0.35 nm to 19.16 ± 0.22 nm. The water flux increased from 133.5 ± 9.5 L/m²/h (for pristine membrane) to 388.6 ± 18.8 L/m²/h (for PES/BNQD 2.00 wt% membrane). BSA flux increased from 38.8 ± 0.9 L/m²/h to 63.2 ± 2.7 L/m²/h up to 1.00 wt% amount of BNQD nanoparticles.

Novel symmetrical and unsymmetrical fluorine-containing metallophthalocyanines: synthesis, characterization and investigation of their biological properties

In this study, a new fluorinated phthalonitrile compound namely 5-bis[4-(trifluoromethoxy)-thiophenyl] phthalonitrile was synthesized. In addition, peripherally substituted symmetric metallated phthalocyanine derivatives [M = Co (2) and M = Zn (3)] and unsymmetrically substituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) complex (4) were synthesized by cyclotetramerization of this phthalonitrile compound. Characterization of all new compounds was carried out using FT-IR, NMR, UV-Vis, and mass spectroscopy. Additionally, antioxidant activity, DNA cleavage activity, antimicrobial activity, biofilm inhibition activity, and bacterial viability inhibition test of the compounds (1-4) were investigated. The antioxidant activities of the new phthalocyanine complexes were studied by performing two different methods. The results indicated that the highest DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity was determined to be 67.85% for 2 and also 3 showed the highest activity with 31.65% for chelating activity at 200 mg L-1 concentration. Phthalocyanine compounds demonstrated effective DNA cleavage and antimicrobial activities. The highest percentage of cell vitality inhibition was found for compound 4, 56.92%. Also, test compounds exhibited good biofilm inhibition activity.

Synthesis and characterization of Rosa canina-mediated biogenic silver nanoparticles for anti-oxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and DNA cleavage activities

In biomedical applications, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are of great interest due to their cost-effective and environmentally friendly properties. Green synthesis of nanoparticles for biological research is a preferred choice since it does not require additional reducing agent. For this purpose, in this study, we aimed to synthesize the biogenic silver nanoparticles with the help of Rosa canina plant (Rc-Ag NPs) and then they have been tried for their antioxidant and antibacterial properties. UV-Vis spectrophotometer, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were performed for characterization of Rc-Ag NPs. Antioxidant properties of silver nanoparticles synthesized with Rosa canina plant were investigated against 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). DNA dissociation activity of synthesized Rc-Ag NPs was studied, and DNA dissociation activity was shown. The antimicrobial activity of Rc-Ag NPs was also tested using micro-dilution. According to the results, Rc-Ag NPs synthesized were found to be highly effective for anti-oxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and DNA cleavage activities.

Synthesis and characterization of Reishi mushroom-mediated green synthesis of silver nanoparticles for the biochemical applications

In recent years, the synthesis of nanoparticles via biological processes has attracted considerable attention. The use of plants and plant extracts is one of the most preferred methods for biological synthesis due to their rich biologically active metabolites. In this study, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized using reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) extract. Different analytical techniques including X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) were used for the characterization of Ag NPs. UV-vis spectrum exhibited a broad absorption peak between 400-460 nm which indicates the existence of Ag NPs. TEM images showed Ag NPs are spherical with a diameter range of 15-22 nm. In addition, it is shown that Ag NPs form a face-centered cubic structure according to XRD characterization technique. The antioxidant activity towards to 1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was also studied. The highest DPPH scavenging percentage was recorded as 76.45% at 250 mg/L. The DNA cleavage activity results indicated that the green Ag NPs caused single strain DNA cleavage activity for 30 and 60 min at 50 and 100 mg/L, respectively. The Ag NPs antimicrobial activity was also investigated and results recorded as minimum inhibition concentration (MIC). Ag NPs showed a strong antibacterial effect against gram-positive (S. aureus, E. hirae, B. cereus) and gram-negative (E. coli, P. aeruginosa, L. pneumophila subsp. Pneumophila) bacteria. Furthermore, Ag NPs have also been shown to have a high antifungal effect against C. albicans fungus.
