The bipyridine adducts of N-phenyldithiocarbamato complexes of Zn(II) and Cd(II); synthesis, spectral, thermal decomposition studies and use as precursors for ZnS and CdS nanoparticles

Chitosan-Salicylic acid and Zinc sulphate nano-formulations defend against yellow rust in wheat by activating pathogenesis-related genes and enzymes

Stripe rust instigated by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici causes major yield loss in wheat. In this study, disease resistance was induced in wheat by pre-activation of pathogenesis related (PR) genes using two different nano-formulations (NFs) i.e. Chitosan- Salicylic acid (SA) NFs (CH-NFs) and Zinc sulphate NFs (Zn-NFs). These NFs were synthesized using green approach and were characterized using various techniques. Both NFs effectively controlled stripe rust in wheat genotypes (WH 711 and WH 1123) by significantly increasing activities of phenylalanine ammonia lyase, tyrosine ammonia lyase and polyphenol oxidase enzymes when compared with disease free-control and diseased plants. Total soluble sugar (TSS) level was highest in CH-NF treated plants. TSS was also relatively higher in diseased plants than disease free-control as well as Zn-NF treated plants. Both CH-NFs and Zn-NFs induced the expression of PR genes. In CH-NF treated plants, the relative expression of PR genes was higher on the 3rd day after spraying (DAS) of NFs as compared to diseased and Zn-NF treated plants in both the genotypes. While in case of Zn-NF treated plants, relative expression of PR genes was higher on 5th DAS as compared to diseased and disease free-control plants. Early rise in expression of PR genes due to NF treatments was responsible for disease resistance in both the wheat genotypes as evidenced by a lower average coefficient of infection. These NFs can be synthesized easily with low cost input, are eco-friendly and can be effectively used against yellow rust as well as other wheat diseases.

The symbiotic system of sulfate-reducing bacteria and clay-sized fraction of purplish soil strengthens cadmium fixation through iron-bearing minerals

The microbe-clay mineral system is widely known to reduce the fluidity of heavy metals through biomineralization, thus mitigating soil pollution stemming from heavy metals. Here, we investigated the effect of mineral distinction on the solidification of cadmium (Cd) using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to construct symbiotic systems with purplish soil, clay-sized fraction of purple soil (Clay_-csp), clay particles of amorphous iron (Fe) oxide (Clay_-ox), clay particles removing crystalline Fe oxide (Clay_-CBD), and residues of Clay_-CBD treated by hydrochloric acid (Clay_-HCl). The difference in Cd morphology among purplish soil, Clay_-csp, and Clay_-ox indicated that the fixation of Cd in soil was largely determined by Fe oxides. The content of Cd in Clay_-csp decreased by 66.7% after the removal of amorphous Fe, confirming that clay easily adsorbed infinitive Fe oxides in purple soil. In the system of SRB and Clay_-ox, carbonate-bound Cd (F2) decreased by 14.85% and residual Cd (F5) increased by 14% from the retardation to late decline phase, eventually forming iron-sulfur (Fe-S) compounds. Based on the correlation analyses of Cd and Fe in amorphous-bound state and Fe-manganese (Mn) oxidation state in simulation experiments, it is demonstrated that Fe-Mn oxides control the behavior of Cd in soil clay, and SRB-mediated Fe-bearing minerals promote the transformation of Cd from activated to stable state.

Dithiocarbamate Complexes as Single Source Precursors to Nanoscale Binary, Ternary and Quaternary Metal Sulfides

Nanodimensional metal sulfides are a developing class of low-cost materials with potential applications in areas as wide-ranging as energy storage, electrocatalysis, and imaging. An attractive synthetic strategy, which allows careful control over stoichiometry, is the single source precursor (SSP) approach in which well-defined molecular species containing preformed metal-sulfur bonds are heated to decomposition, either in the vapor or solution phase, resulting in facile loss of organics and formation of nanodimensional metal sulfides. By careful control of the precursor, the decomposition environment and addition of surfactants, this approach affords a range of nanocrystalline materials from a library of precursors. Dithiocarbamates (DTCs) are monoanionic chelating ligands that have been known for over a century and find applications in agriculture, medicine, and materials science. They are easily prepared from nontoxic secondary and primary amines and form stable complexes with all elements. Since pioneering work in the late 1980s, the use of DTC complexes as SSPs to a wide range of binary, ternary, and multinary sulfides has been extensively documented. This review maps these developments, from the formation of thin films, often comprised of embedded nanocrystals, to quantum dots coated with organic ligands or shelled by other metal sulfides that show high photoluminescence quantum yields, and a range of other nanomaterials in which both the phase and morphology of the nanocrystals can be engineered, allowing fine-tuning of technologically important physical properties, thus opening up a myriad of potential applications.

Increased biomass and reduced tissue cadmium accumulation in rice via indigenous Citrobacter sp. XT1-2-2 and its mechanisms

Microbial remediation is a promising technique to remediate heavy metals contaminated soils. In this study, the cadmium (Cd)- resistant Citrobacter sp. XT1-2-2, isolated from heavy metals contaminated paddy soils, was investigated to evaluate the effect of this strain on soil Cd speciation, cellular Cd distribution, tissue Cd accumulation and rice biomass. The percentage of Cd²⁺ removal by Citrobacter sp. XT1-2-2 was up to 82.3 ± 2.1% within 240 min in the solution. The average content of soil soluble plus exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions of Cd decreased, whereas Fe/Mn oxide-bound, organic matter-bound and residual fractions increased with bacteria inoculation. For the paddy soil inoculated with the XT1-2-2 strain, Cd concentrations of roots, culms, leaves and grains were significantly reduced by 24.1%, 46.9%, 41.5% and 66.7%, respectively. In addition, inoculation bacteria significantly increased the biomass of the roots, above-ground tissues and the rice grains. All results indicated that the XT1-2-2 strain had the ability to immobilize soil Cd and decrease Cd accumulation in rice grains. Therefore, the XT1-2-2 strain has potential for application to remediate Cd-contaminated paddy soils. It is possible to exploit a new bacterial-assisted technique for the remediation in Cd-contaminated paddy soils.

Lead ethyl dithiocarbamates: efficient single-source precursors to PbS nanocubes

Lead ethyl dithiocarbamates have been successfully used as single-source precursors for the deposition of PbS using spin coating followed by annealing at moderate temperatures. The thin films were characterized using a powder X-ray diffractometer and were found to be face-centred cubic with the (200) plane being the most preferred orientation. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the formation of well-defined cubes. Optical band gaps of PbS thin films were estimated using Tauc plots as 0.72, 0.73 and 0.77 eV at annealing temperatures of 250, 300 and 400°C. These band gaps were all blue shifted from the bulk value of 0.41 eV. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis was used to determine the composition of the thin films which showed an approximately 1 : 1 Pb to S ratio.

Simultaneous mitigation of tissue cadmium and lead accumulation in rice via sulfate-reducing bacterium

The objectives of this study were to investigate the mechanism responsible for Cd and Pb immobilization by sulfate reduction to sulfide and effectiveness of decreasing Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ bioavailability in culture solution and paddy soils via sulfate-reducing bacterium (SRB1-1). The SRB1-1 strain, exhibiting high resistances to Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺, was isolated from bulk soils in the metal(loid)-contaminated paddy field. During the culture of the SRB1-1 strain, the removal percentages of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ from culture solution reached 99.5% and 76.0% in 72 h, respectively. The surface morphology and composition of metal precipitates formed by SRB1-1 strain were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and further confirmed to be CdS and PbS by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). When living SRB1-1 strain was applied in Cd and Pb-contaminated soils, the SRB1-1 strain could stably colonize using its resistance to rifampicin, and showed significantly impact on the bacterial community composition. Cd and Pb contents in rice grains were decreased by 29.5% and 26.2%, respectively, while Cd and Pb contents in the roots, culms, leaves, and husk were also decreased ranging from 19.1% to 43%, respectively. Due to growth in highly Cd and Pb contaminated soils, Cd content of the rice grains did not meet the standard for limit of Cd and Pb, but safe production of rice plants may be obtained in slightly or moderately metal(loid)-contaminated soils in the presence of the living SRB1-1 strain. These results indicated that the SRB1-1 strain could effectively reduce the Cd and Pb bioavailability in soils and uptake in rice plants. Our results highlighted the possibility to develop a new bacterial-assisted technique for reduced metal accumulation in rice grains, and also showed potential for effective synergistic bioremediation of SRB1-1 strain and rice plants in metal(loid)-contaminated soils.
