Abstract
In the last few decades, U(VI) is a significant environmental threat. The innovative and environmentally friendly adsorbent materials for U(VI) removal were urgent. Preparation of the modified biochar from wheat straw by combined composites of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles and chitosan Schiff base (MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC) was characterized, and adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the performance and interfacial mechanism of U(VI) removal. The results showed that MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC exhibited high adsorption capacity of U(VI) compared with BC. The adsorption process of U(VI) removal by MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC could be ascribed as pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of U(VI) removal by MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC reached 19.57 mg/g at pH4.0, 30 mg/L of U(VI), and 25 °C. The possible mechanism was a chemical adsorption process, and it mainly contained electrostatic attraction and surface complexation. Additionally, it also was an economic and environmental friendly adsorbent.

Abstract
This study aims to fabricate a novel integrated photocatalytic adsorbent (IPA) via a green solvothermal process employing tea (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) leaf extract as a stabilizing and capping agent for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. An n-type semiconductor photocatalyst, SnS2, was chosen as a photocatalyst due to its remarkable photocatalytic activity supported over areca nut (Areca catechu) biochar for the adsorption of pollutants. The adsorption and photocatalytic properties of fabricated IPA were examined by taking amoxicillin (AM) and congo red (CR) as two emerging pollutants found in wastewater. Investigating synergistic adsorption and photocatalytic properties under varying reaction conditions mimicking actual wastewater conditions marks the novelty of the present research. The support of biochar for the SnS2 thin films induced a reduction in charge recombination rate, which enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the material. The adsorption data were in accordance with the Langmuir nonlinear isotherm model, indicating monolayer chemosorption with the pseudo-second-order rate kinetics. The photodegradation process follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with the highest rate constant of 0.0450 min-1 for AM and 0.0454 min-1 for CR. The overall removal efficiency of 93.72 ± 1.19% and 98.43 ± 1.53% could be achieved within 90 min for AM and CR via simultaneous adsorption and photodegradation model. A plausible mechanism of synergistic adsorption and photodegradation of pollutants is also presented. The effect of pH, Humic acid (HA) concentration, inorganic salts and water matrices have also been included. The photodegradation activity of SnS2 under visible light coupled with the adsorption capability of the biochar results in the excellent removal of the contaminants from the liquid phase.

Abstract
Calcium, with its excellent adsorptive property and higher permissible limits in the environment, emerges as an effective wastewater treatment earth metal. Most of the catalysts, photocatalysts, and adsorbents reported in the literature have heavy metal complex, which creates a leaching problem. Majorly, precursors used for the synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts for wastewater treatment are costly. Therefore, the use of such precursors would be not suitable and feasible approach from an economic point of view. This review work is focused on giving an overview of the utilisation of calcium-based catalysts (adsorbents and photocatalyst) for the removal/degradation of various types of dye water pollutants and summarises the reported effects of calcium as a base on the removal efficiency of dopants. In this article, an extensive literature survey is presented on the various photocatalysts developed and the different syntheses involved in their preparation. As the utilisation of marble powder is a green sustainable approach, the scope of various calcium-based photocatalysts and their application is presented. This article also aims for the elementary and inclusive determination of the effect of introducing calcium as a base for different catalysts and adsorbents.

Abstract
The complete detoxification of harmful dyes and antibiotics from aqueous solution is essential for environmental remediation. The present work focuses on a facile hydrothermal synthesis of a cadmium sulfide (CdS) photocatalyst using thioacetamide as a sulfur source. The synthesized CdS showed a hexagonal phase with an energy gap of 2.27 eV, suggesting the promising visible-light-responsive semiconducting photocatalyst. The photoactivity of the prepared CdS was investigated by evaluating the degradation of the Reactive red 141 (RR141) dye, Congo red (CR) dye, and ofloxacin (OFL) antibiotic. After only 180 min of solar light illumination, a high performance of 98%, 97%, and 87% toward degradation of RR141, CR, and OFL was obtained. The photodegradation of the pollutants agrees well with the first-order kinetic model. The rate constant of 0.055 min-1, 0.040 min-1, and 0.026 min-1, respectively, was reported toward degradation of RR141, CR, and OFL. Photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals play a vital role in removing toxic organic contaminants. The chemical stability of the prepared CdS was also confirmed. The synthesized CdS photocatalyst still maintains high photocatalytic performance even after five consecutive cycles of use, indicating its excellent cycling ability. The present research shows a facile route to fabricate a CdS photocatalyst to completely detoxify harmful organic pollutants, including dyes and antibiotics, in the environment.

Abstract
This study effectively demonstrates the sonochemical synthesis of visible-light-responsive Cu-ZnO/TiO2 ternary Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposite photocatalyst. The as-prepared photocatalyst was comprehensively characterized by techniques including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and elemental dot mapping, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The photocatalytic activity of the Cu-ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalyst was assessed for the degradation of Congo red (CR), an azo dye, under direct sunlight. The pseudo-first-order rate constant for CR degradation was found to be 0.09 min−1. The outcome implies that the synthesised nanocomposite photocatalyst demonstrates excellent photocatalytic activity under direct sunlight as 98% degradation of CR dye was achieved in approximately 20 min using the Cu-ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalyst. Furthermore, its high recoverability and reusability of five times indicate its excellent catalytic potential.

Abstract
Despite the photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation using ZnO started in 1910-1911, many challenges are still ahead, and several critical issues have to be addressed. Large band gap, and short life-time of photogenerated electrons and holes are critical issues negatively affect the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. Various approaches have been introduced to overcome these issues including intrinsic doping, extrinsic doping, and heterostructure. This review introduces unique and deep insights into tuning of the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. It starts by description of how to tune the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO through tuning its morphology, surface area, exposed face, and intrinsic defects. Afterward, the review explains how the Z-scheme approach succeed to address the redox weakened issue of heterojunction approach. In general, this review provides a clear image that helps the researcher to tune the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO and its heterostructure.

Abstract
Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were synthesized using a simple, low cost and safe method involving aqueous leaf extracts of Alchornea laxiflora and a zinc precursor salt. The nanoparticles were characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), Fourier transform (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). They were evaluated for their potentials as tyrosinase inhibitors and as catalysts in the degradation of Congo red dye. The UV-vis spectra gave characteristic surface Plasmon bands within the range 276-456 nm. The band gap energies of the ZnO-NPs were of the range, 2.50-3.67 ev. The SEM results showed average sizes of 29 nm and 38 nm for particles obtained using 1 mL and 2 mL of the plant extracts respectively. EDX plot showed the elemental compositions of the nanoparticles with zinc and oxygen being pronounced. The ZnO nanoparticles exhibited good photocatalytic efficiency of 87 % degradation of Congo red (CR) dye molecules in 60 min, They also showed good anti-tyrosinase ability with an IC50 of 66.28 μg/mL. Overall the biogenic ZnO nanoparticles are promising materials for dual applications as photocatalysts in the degradation of Congo red dye and as tyrosinase inhibitors.

Abstract
Because of its superior physical and chemical properties, MnFe2O4 is regarded as one of the best magnetic material alternatives for Fe3O4. However, MnFe2O4 alone cannot remove heavy metal ions and dyes. Here, we report on a new mesoporous magnetic MnFe2O4@CS-SiO2 microsphere material that was synthesised via the hydrothermal method to remove Zn2+ and methylene blue (MB) in simulated textile wastewater. The composite was characterised using a vibrating sample magnetometer, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and a Brunauer-Emmett Teller analysis. The pH, adsorbent dosage, initial adsorbate concentration, and reaction time effects on the removal of Zn2+ and MB were studied under different conditions, and a possible removal mechanism was proposed and discussed. The experimental results show that the suitable pH range for MB adsorption was extremely wide, and the adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 30 min. In addition, the prepared material has excellent stability. With an excellent removal efficiency as high as 56.1% and 93.86% for Zn2+ and MB, respectively, after five consecutive cycles and a superior adsorption capacity compared with other materials, the prepared composite in this paper proved to be a promising and effective magnetic adsorbent for the removal of Zn2+ and MB from textile wastewater.

Abstract
A comparative photocatalytic degradation of 2-chlorophenol (2CP) in aqueous solution was investigated using pristine and Ag-doped semiconductor photocatalysts obtained from TiO2, ZnO and ZnS. Varying percentages (1, 3 and 5%) of Ag nanoparticles were doped on the semiconductor photocatalysts via the sol-gel method. The pristine and Ag-doped photocatalysts were characterized using UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photo-luminescence spectroscopy, X-Ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy; and these techniques confirmed the successful syntheses of the pristine and Ag-doped species. The photocatalytic activities of all species for the degradation of 2CP were carried in photo-reactor using UV irradiation intensity of 1.4 mW/cm2 for 150 min; and the effects of various operating parameters (such as catalyst loading, pH and 2CP initial concentrations) were studied. The results showed enhanced 2CP degradation in the Ag-doped species in comparison to the pristine species while alkaline pH region was most suitable for 2CP degradation especially at low concentration. Lower loadings of the photocatalysts were usually more effective for the 2CP degradation and the degradation trend in the TiO2 and ZnS species was 5% Ag-doped >3% Ag-doped >1% Ag-doped > Pristine, while it was 1% Ag-doped >3% Ag-doped >5% Ag-doped > Pristine in the ZnO. Thus, although the Ag doping enhanced 2CP by all semiconductor photocatalysts, the Ag-doped TiO2 was more effective than the ZnO and ZnS species.

Abstract
Ag-doped ZnO nanocomposites are successfully synthesized at different calcination temperatures and times through a simple, effective, high-yield and low-cost mechanochemical combustion technique. Effects of calcination temperature on the crystallinity and optical properties of Ag/ZnO nanocomposites have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV−visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD patterns of the synthesized Ag/ZnO exhibit a well-crystalline wurtzite ZnO crystal structure. The grain size of Ag/ZnO nanocomposites is found to be 19 and 46 nm at calcination temperatures of 400 °C and 700 °C, respectively. The maximum absorption in the UV region is obtained for Ag/ZnO nanocomposites synthesized at a calcination temperature of 500 °C for 3 h. The peak position of blue emissions is almost the same for the nanocomposites obtained at 300–700 °C calcination temperatures. The usual band edge emission in the UV is not obtained at 330 nm excitation. Band edge and blue band emissions are observed for the use of low excitation energy at 335–345 nm.

Abstract
The hybrid system of photocatalytic fuel cell - peroxi-coagulation (PFC-PC) is a sustainable and green technology to degrade organic pollutants and generate electricity simultaneously. In this study, three different types of photocatalysts: TiO2, ZnO and α-Fe2O3 were immobilized respectively on carbon cloth (CC), and applied as photoanodes in the photocatalytic fuel cell of this hybrid system. Photocatalytic fuel cell was employed to drive a peroxi-coagulation process by generating the external voltage accompanying with degrading organic pollutants under UV light irradiation. The degradation efficiency of Amaranth dye and power output in the hybrid system of PFC-PC were evaluated by applying different photoanode materials fabricated in this study. In addition, the effect of light on the photocurrent of three different photoanode materials was investigated. In the absence of light, the reduction of photocurrent percentage was found to be 69.7%, 17.3% and 93.2% in TiO2/CC, ZnO/CC and α-Fe2O3/CC photoanodes, respectively. A maximum power density (1.17 mWcm-2) and degradation of dye (93.8%) at PFC reactor were achieved by using ZnO/CC as photoanode. However, the different photoanode materials at PFC showed insignificant difference in dye degradation trend in the PC reactor. Meanwhile, the degradation trend of Amaranth at PFC reactor was influenced by the recombination rate, electron mobility and band gap energy of photocatalyst among different photoanode materials.

Abstract
Cobalt ferrite nano-composite was prepared by hydrothermal route using cobalt nitrate, iron nitrate and ethylene glycol as chelating agent. The nano-composite was coated on glass by Doctor Blade method and annealed at 300 °C. The structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties have been studied by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). Powder XRD analysis confirmed formation of CoFe2O4 spinel phase. The estimated particle size from FESEM data was 50 nm. The calculated energy band gaps, obtained by Tauc relation from UV-Vis absorption spectra was 1.3 eV. Photocatalytic degradation of Reactive Red 4 as an azo textile was investigated in aqueous solution under irradiation showed 68.0% degradation of the dye within 100 min. The experimental enhanced activity compare to pure Fe2O3 can be ascribed to the formation of composite, which was mainly attributable to the transfer of electron and hole to the surface of composite and hinder the electron hole recombination.

Abstract
This paper presents, for the first time, the recycling and use of spent Li-ion battery cathode tape as a catalyst in the degradation of an organic dye. In our proposal, two major environmental problems can be solved: the secure disposal of cell phone batteries and the treatment of effluents with potentially toxic organic dyes. The spent Li-ion battery cathode investigated in this paper corresponds to 29% of the mass of Li-ion batteries and is made up of 83% LiCoO2, 14.5% C and less than 2.5% Al, Al2O3 and Co3O4. The use of spent Li-ion battery cathode tape increased the degradation velocity constant of methylene blue in the absence of light by about 200 times in relation to pure H2O2. This increase can be explained by a reduction in the activation energy from 83 kJ mol(-1) to 26 kJ mol(-1). The mechanism of degradation promoted by LiCoO2 is probably related to the generation of superoxide radical (O2(-)). The rupture of the aromatic rings of methylene blue was analyzed by ESI-MS.
