Abstract
A significant issue in cancer biology is finding anticancer therapies that effectively kill cancer cells. Through the use of several aldehydes, Schiff bases based on branched poly (p-hydroxy styrene) are created. The branched polymer is first chloroacetylated, then aminated with 1,4-phenylenediamine, and finally, aldehydes are reacted with the aminated polymer to produce the Schiff base compounds. Through the utilization of FTIR, TGA, XRD, NMR, and elemental analysis, all synthesized Schiff-bases are identified and characterized. Further, the antineoplastic potential of all Schiff bases is evaluated against different cancer cell lines. The results gained from this study indicate that the Schiff base polymers have cytotoxic power against cancer cells depending on cancer cell type and this antiproliferation potency is dose-concentration dependent. Importantly, the prepared S1 Schiff-base polymer shows potent cytotoxicity and is able to trigger the apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in MCF-7 cells. Further, it downregulates VEGFR protein expression. The Schiff base polymers would have extensive applications in the biological disciplines.

Abstract
Three metal complexes [CuL(NO3)]n (1), [Cd(HL)(NO3)2]n (2) and [EuL(HCOOH)(H2O)(NO3)2] (3) were synthesized with a pyridyl Schiff ligand L (N'-[(1E)-pyridin-2-ylmethylidene]pyridine-4-carbohydrazide). A crystallographic study revealed that complexes 1 and 2 have a chain structure, and complex 3 is a zero-dimensional monomer. In vitro cytotoxicity studies showed that complex 2 had the best antiproliferative activity against SMMC-7721 cells and complex 3 had the best antiproliferative activity against MDA-MB-231 cells with single-digit IC50 values, both exceeding those of the control drug cisplatin by far. The cell invasion and migration ability through the transwell assay and wound-healing assay showed that the selected complexes could inhibit the invasion and migration of cancer cells. The Hoechst staining assay and ROS generation assay with SMMC-7721 cells indicated that the cytotoxic effects of complex 2 involved apoptosis induction through ROS accumulation. The apoptosis-inducing and cell cycle arrest effects of complex 2 on SMMC-7721 cells indicated that the antitumor effect was achieved through apoptosis induction and inhibition of DNA synthesis by blocking the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle. In addition, complex 2 showed significant inhibition against B. dysentery with an inhibition circle diameter of 24 mm.

Abstract
As an important rare earth element (REE) extensively applied to industry, agriculture, and medicine, lanthanum (La) has attracted a host of health concerns. This study aimed to explore the relationship between La exposure and the risk of developing oral cancer through a case-control study with a large sample size. Serum La levels of 430 oral cancer patients and 1,118 healthy controls were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The association of La level with the risk of oral cancer was assessed in two ways: (1) as a continuous scale based on restricted cubic splines (RCS); (2) as a priori defined centile categories using multivariate logistic regression model, based on propensity score matching (PSM) and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). The RCS revealed a non-linear U-shaped relationship between serum La and oral cancer risk. Serum La deficiency or excess was associated with an increased risk of oral cancer. When the La level was analyzed as a categorical variable, a similar U-shaped association was observed. Of note, compared to those with La concentrations of 0.243–0.341 μg/L (reference quantiles, 41st−60th), the risk was increased in those with the lower or higher quantiles (0.132–0.242 μg/L vs. 0.243–0.341 μg/L: OR = 1.80, 95%CI: 1.07–3.02; 0.342–0.497 μg/L vs. 0.243–0.341 μg/L: OR = 2.30, 95%CI: 1.38–3.84). The results were generally consistent with the PSM and IPTW analyses. This preliminary study provides strong evidence that there was a U-shaped relationship between serum La levels and oral cancer risk. Much additional work is warranted to confirm our findings.

Abstract
The thermal condensation of 3-(2-Furyl)acrolein with 2-Amino-6-ethoxybenzothiazole generated a new Schiff base, (1E,2E)-N-(6-ethoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(furan-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-imine (L), with general formula of C16H14N2O2S. Also, a series of lanthanide complexes of gadolinium, samarium, and neodymium (La–Lc) were synthesized utilizing acetonitrile as the solvent and triethylamine as a buffer and catalyst. Based on elemental analysis, mass spectroscopy, and FTIR analysis, all of the Bis-(1E,2E)-N-(6-ethoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(furan-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-iminetri-nitratolanthanide(III) complexes with the general formula [LnL2(NO3)3]·H2O are solids with a 2:1 molar ratio (ligand: metal). Based on conductivity estimates, they are nonelectrolytes and monoatomic paramagnetic according to the magnetic moment measurements, and one mole of lattice water was found after thermal gravimetric measurements and FTIR analysis. Therefore, the lanthanide complexes show a ten-coordination structure with a deformed bicapped square antiprismatic. The Schiff base and its complexes were screened for their antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and antitumor properties. Their antimicrobial and antifungal activities were strong, and they also produced good antioxidant and antitumor effects.

Abstract
Development in the field of bio-inorganic chemistry increased the interest in Schiff base and its complexes due to its biological importance in many fields, including anticancer activity. Discovery of the antitumor activity of Schiff base and its complexes against various tumor cell lines fascinates the researchers to develop new anticancer drugs without any side effects. Thus, the present review focuses on the anticancer activity of Schiff bases and their metal complexes.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most predominant tumors worldwide and the present treatment policies are not enough to provide a specific solution. We aimed to assess the cytotoxic effect of Cu(II)–Mn(II) Schiff base tetradentate complex alone or in combination with cisplatin against squamous cell carcinoma cell line (SCCs) in vitro. Oral-derived gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) were used as control. The cell viability was assessed by MTT assay. IC50 values were calculated. Evaluation of apoptosis and DNA damage were performed. In addition, the expression of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic genes and proteins were tested. IC50 values indicated less toxicity of the Schiff base complex on GMSCs compared to cisplatin. Schiff base complex treatment resulted in up-regulation of p53 and Bax genes expression and down-regulation of Bcl2 gene expression in SCCs paralleled with increased protein expression of caspase-3 and Bax and down-regulation of Bcl-2 protein. Annexin V-FITC apoptosis kit showed a higher apoptotic effect induced by a Schiff base complex compared to the cisplatin-treated group. These effects were markedly increased on the combination of Schiff base and cisplatin. The present study established that Cu(II)–Mn(II) Schiff base tetradentate complex might induce a cytotoxic effect on SCCs cells via induction of the apoptotic pathway. Moreover, this Schiff base complex augments the anticancer effect of cisplatin.

Abstract
Two new Schiff base ligands (TE and TF) were prepared from conjugation of testosterone with 4-(4-ethylphenyl)-3-thiosemicarbazide and 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-thiosemicarbazide, respectively. Their nickel (NE and NF) and zinc (ZE and ZF) complexes were reported. X-ray crystallography revealed a distorted square planar geometry was adopted by NE. The compounds demonstrated excellent selectivity towards the colorectal carcinoma cell line HCT 116 despite their weak preferences towards the prostate cancer cell lines (PC-3 and LNCaP). Against HCT 116, all these compounds were able to arrest cell cycle at G0/G1 phase and induce apoptosis via mitochondria-dependent (TE, NE, and TF) and extrinsic apoptotic pathway (ZE, NF, and ZF). Moreover, only ZE was able to act as topoisomease I poison and halt its enzymatic reactions although all compounds presented excellent affinity towards DNA.

Abstract
A new series of lanthanum(iii) complexes was synthesized using a p-anisidine-appended 1-hydroxy-2-acetonapthanone (3) Schiff base and characterized via spectroscopic methods. The ligand was synthesized via sonication and the crystalline product was characterized using X-ray crystallography. The genotoxicity of the compound was assessed primarily by the bacterial reverse mutation (Ames) test and the in vitro mammalian chromosome aberration test; in both cases, the samarium complex 5 was found to be non-mutagenic. The anti-tumor activity of complexes 4, 5, and 6 was assayed against HeLa tumor cells and screened using the MTT assay. The IC50 value of complex 5 was found to be 34 ± 1.2 μg mL-1 and this compound exhibited superior activity towards the cells compared to 4 and 6. These results were further confirmed by Hoechst 33258 staining and AO/EI dual staining, which indicated that the cells underwent an apoptosis mechanism in a dose-dependent manner. The apoptosis was further confirmed by the formation of ladders in the DNA fragmentation assay, and the western blot analysis of complex 5 suggested that the cells underwent the caspase-3-dependent pathway with PARP cleavage. Furthermore, the docking studies of complex 5 with HSA showed that it was situated in a hydrophilic cavity held by the electrostatic attraction of four hydrogen-bonding interactions. PDB ID:1BNA binds with complex 5via strong π-π stacking interactions, which facilitate binding with the major grooves of DNA strands. The above-mentioned results illustrate that for complex 5, mitochondrion-mediated apoptosis occurs via caspase-3 activation. Complex 5 binds with DNA via intercalation because of S-phase cell cycle arrest in the HeLa cells.

Abstract
A series of new three heteroleptic complexes of the general formula [Ln(Cn)(TMEDA)Cl(OH2)]·2Cl·xH2O, (where Ln = La(III), Er(III) and Yb(III), Cn = cocaine and TMEDA = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) were synthesized, structurally characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods, molar conductivity and mass spectrometry. Thermal properties of the synthesized complexes and their kinetic thermodynamic parameters were studied. Theoretical calculations including geometry optimization, electronic structure and electronic and thermal energies were carried out using DFT and TD-DFT calculations at B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory and the different quantum chemical parameters were calculated. The in vitro antiproliferative activity of the newly synthesized complexes was assessed by MTT assay on MCF-7 and HepG-2 cancer cell lines. Yb(III) complex showed promising cytotoxic activity comparable to that of cisplatin on both cell lines with minimum effect on human normal cells. Further molecular mechanistic investigations showed that Yb(III) complex is an apoptotic inducer as it raises the caspase-3 and caspase-9 cellular level in the MCF-7 cell line. Furthermore, it showed an elevating effect on the level of the tumor suppressor nuclear proteins P21 and P27 concentrations in MCF-7 cells. Moreover, Yb(III) complex hindered the cellular scavenger system of the reactive oxygen species through reducing the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) cellular level imperiling MCF-7 cells by unmanageable oxidative stress. In addition to its cytotoxic effect, Yb(III) complex showed antimetastatic properties as it decreased the cellular levels of matrix metalloproteinases MMP-3 and MMP-9. These results showed that the Yb(III) complex is a promising cytotoxic metal-based agent that exerts its action through various molecular mechanisms with minimum effects on normal cells and with additional antimetastatic properties.

Abstract
Previous studies have reported higher biological activity of dehydrorosinamine derivatives. In order to further synthesize novel compounds with higher biological activity, a series of novel compounds containing benzo-azepine structures were synthesized from dehydroabietylamine in good yields in this study. The structures of synthesized compounds were identified by infra red (IR), 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and mass spectra (MS) analysis. The antitumor activities of the target compounds against L02 and HepG2 cells were studied. Furthermore, the dehydroabietylamine derivatives were studied on plasmid DNA cleavage activities. The results showed that the synthesized target compound exhibit antitumor and DNA cleavage activities against plasmid DNA (Escherichia coli). Our results further demonstrate the relationship between the chemical structure and biological function of the synthesized compounds.

Abstract
In this study, a new lanthanum (III)-amino acid complex utilizing cysteine has been synthesized and characterized. The anticancer activities of the prepared La(III) complex against MCF-7 cell lines were studied. Results of MTT assay showed that at all three incubation times, the cytotoxic effect of prepared La(III) complex on MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines displays a time- and dose-dependent inhibitory effects. The interactions of the La(III) complex with two whey proteins (bovine serum albumin, BSA, and Bovine β-lactoglobulin, βLG) have been explored by using spectroscopic and molecular dicking methods. The obtained results indicated that La(III) complex strongly quenched the fluorescence of two carrier proteins in static quenching mode and also, BSA hah stronger binding affinity toward studied complex than βLG whit binding constant values of KBSA-La Complex ∼ 0.11 × 104 M-1 and KβLG-La Complex ∼ 0.63 × 103 M-1 at 300 K. The thermodynamic parameters revealed the contribution of hydrogen bond and Vander Waals interactions in both systems. The distances of the La(III) complex whit whey proteins were calculated using Förster energy transfer theory and proved existence of the energy transfer between two proteins and prepared La(III) complex with a high probability. FT-IR and UV-Vis absorption measurements indicated that the binding of the La(III) to BSA and βLG may induce conformational and micro-environmental changes of the proteins. The docking results indicate that the La(III) complex bind to residues located in the site II of BSA and second site of βLG. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
A Schiff base ligand (SBL), N2, N3-bis (anthracen-9-ylmethylene) pyridine-2, 3-diamine, was synthesized through the condensation of 2,6-diaminopyridine and anthracene-9-carbaldehyde using a 1:2 ratio. 1H NMR spectra confirmed the observation of non-involvement aromatic carboxylic proton in SBL. A novel series of lanthanide (i.e., praseodymium (Pr), erbium (Er), and ytterbium (Yb))-based SBL metal complexes was successfully synthesized, and their functional groups were elaborately demonstrated using UV–visible, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses. FT-IR spectral studies revealed that SBL behaved as a bidentate ligand and it was structured with metal ions by the two azomethine nitrogens. The synthesized SBL-based metal complexes were elaborately performed for cytotoxicity activity versus Vero, human breast cancer (MCF7), and cervical (HeLa) anticancer cell lines.
