Application of longan shell as non-conventional low-cost adsorbent for the removal of cationic dye from aqueous solution

Removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions by adsorption on levulinic acid-modified natural shells

This study has developed an innovative and environmentally friendly approach for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye by natural shells (NShs) chemically modified with levulinic acid (LA). Almond shell (ASh), walnut shell (WSh), and apricot kernel shell (AKSh) were used as waste fillers. The adsorption behavior of MB onto the biosorbents was investigated with respect to parameters such as sorbent dosage (0.4-6 g/L), pH (3-10), initial dye concentration (10-500 mg/L), and temperature (25-65 °C). The biosorbents were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The isotherm and kinetic adsorption data can be said to fit the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudosecond-order model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) of LA-modified walnut shell (LA-WSh), almond shell (LA-ASh), and apricot kernel shell (LA-AKSh) calculated by the Langmuir equation at 25 °C was 294.1, 270.2, and 180.0 mg/g, respectively. The results of thermodynamic analysis showed that adsorption was feasible, endothermic, and spontaneous.

Synthesis of magnetic functionalized MWCNT nanocomposite through surface RAFT co-polymerization of acrylic acid and N-isopropyl acrylamide for removal of cationic dyes from aqueous solutions

In this study, magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotube (MMWCNT) composites were prepared via surface reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) co-polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) in the presence of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. First, a novel RAFT agent (RA) was prepared and then immobilized onto the surface of MWCNT to fabricate RA-g-MWCNT. Then, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were attached onto the surface of RA-g-MWCNT. Finally, RAFT co-polymerization of AA and NIPAM monomers was carried out via Fe₃O₄-g-RA-g-MWCNT RAFT agent. The structure and morphology of the prepared polymer-coated MWCNT was examined by FTIR, SEM, TEM, XRD, VSM, and TGA. The adsorption behaviours of the cationic dyes were studied. The equilibrium isotherm and kinetics of cationic dyes were investigated. Thermodynamics investigations also depicted that the adsorptions of cationic dyes were spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The synthesized dye adsorbent with high adsorption capacities, reusability, and easy recovery makes it as a good candidate for wastewater treatment.

Alternative treatments to improve the potential of rice husk as adsorbent for methylene blue

Alternative treatments, such as, NaOH, ultrasound assisted (UA) and supercritical CO₂ (SCO₂), were performed to improve the potential of rice husk as adsorbent to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous media. All the treatments improved the surface characteristics of rice husk, exposing its organic fraction and/or providing more adsorption sites. The Langmuir and Hill models were able to explain the MB adsorption for all adsorbents in all studied temperatures. The experimental and modeled parameters demonstrated that the MB adsorption was favored by the temperature increase and by the use of NaOH-rice husk. The maximum adsorption capacities for the MB solutions (ranging from 10 to 100 mg L^-1), estimated from the Langmuir model at 328 K, were in the following order: NaOH rice-husk (65.0 mg g^-1) > UA-rice husk (58.7 mg g^-1) > SCO₂-rice husk (56.4 mg g^-1) > raw rice husk (52.2 mg g^-1). The adsorption was a spontaneous, favorable and endothermic process. In general, this work demonstrated that NaOH, UA and SCO₂ treatments are alternatives to improve the potential of rice husk as adsorbent.

Comparative study on ultrasonic assisted adsorption of dyes from single system onto Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon: Experimental design methodology

The present study the ultrasound assisted adsorption of dyes in single system onto Fe₃O₄ magnetite nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon (Fe₃O₄-MNPs-AC) was described following characterization and identification of this adsorbent by conventional techniques likes field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, particle-size distribution, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. A central composite design in conjunction with a response surface methodology according to f-test and t-test for recognition and judgment about significant term led to construction of quadratic model which represent relation among responses and effective terms. This model has unique ability to predict adsorption data behavior over a large space around central and optimum point. Accordingly Optimum conditions for well and quantitative removal of present dyes was obtained best operation and conditions: initial SY, MB and EB dyes concentration of 15, 15 and 25mgL^-1, 4.0, 6.0 and 5.0 of pH, 360, 360 and 240s sonication time and 0.04, 0.03 and 0.032g of Fe₃O₄-MNPs-AC. Replication of similar experiment (N=5) guide that average removal percentage of SY, MB and EB were found to be 96.63±2.86%, 98.12±1.67% and 99.65±1.21% respectively. Good agreement and closeness of Predicted and experimental result and high adsorption capacity of dyes in short time strongly confirm high suitability of present method for waste water treatment, while easy separation of present nanoparticle and its good regeneration all support good applicability of Fe₃O₄-MNPs-AC for waste water treatment. The kinetic study can be represented by combination of pseudo second-order and intraparticle diffusion. The obtained maximum adsorption capacities correspond to Langmuir as best model for representation of experimental data correspond to dyes adsorption onto Fe₃O₄-MNPs-AC were 76.37, 78.76 and 102.00mgg^-1 for SY, MB and EB, respectively. In addition, the performance comparison of ultrasound-assisted, magnetic stirrer assisted and vortex assisted adsorption methods demonstrates that ultrasound is an effective and good choice for facilitation of adsorption process via. Compromise of simple and facile diffusion.
