Abstract
A quinoline-based small molecular probe, H2L was designed, synthesized and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. It was utilized as a multi-responsive probe for the detection of Fe3+, Al3+, Cu2+ and PPi. It showed very selective instant turn-on fluorimetric response towards Fe3+and Al3+ with a detection limit in nanomolar range. Solutions of H2L containing Fe3+ or Al3+ could sequentially sense PPi by a turn-off mechanism. Also, H2L could determine the presence of Cu2+ very selectively among a series of other metal ions by a sharp change in colour. Detection of Cu2+ through colorimetry was further investigated by systematic UV-Vis studies and the potential of H2L to act as a potential colorimetric sensor for Cu2+ was suitably established. Filter-paper strip experiments were conducted to demonstrate the practical utility of the proposed sensor. Potential applications of H2L as a sensor for pH in the acidic range has also been explored.

Abstract
While a plethora of organic linkers based on carboxylic acids have been utilized in the construction of MOFs, zwitterionic linkers that typify the attributes of naturally occurring amino acids have been exploited only scarcely to the best of our knowledge. Zwitterionic interior characteristics should be expected to impart unique properties to the resultant MOFs with a high potential to interact with guest species through electrostatic interactions. In our investigations with bis(p-carboxyphenyl)imidazolylarenes as a novel class of linkers for the development of functional MOFs, we have found that bisimidazole-tetracarboxylic acid H4DMBI undergoes metal-assisted self-assembly with Zn(NO3)2 to yield a layered MOF (Zn-DMBI). In the latter, the linker serves as a two-connecting linker with imidazoles and carboxylic acids behaving as zwitterions. The layers are offset stacked in the crystal structure and are bound firmly by hydrogen bonds between imidazolium and carboxylate ions. Such a packing precludes fluorescence from being observed due to self-quenching. However, exfoliation into zwitterionic 2D metal-organic nanosheets (MONs) by sonication in methanol for 1 h liberates palpable fluorescence. Furthermore, the suspension of luminescent MONs (LMONs) in methanol permits selective sensing of anions; in particular, dihydrogen phosphate (H2PO4-) that is complementary to the zwitterions in terms of hydrogen bond donor and acceptor sites is observed with fluorescence enhancement by 120%, leading to its detection at a sub-parts-per-million (0.13 ppm) level. Thus, access to zwitterionic 2D MONs and their application for selective anion sensing with "turn-on" fluorescence are demonstrated by a rational de novo bottom-up approach.

Abstract
A spectroscopic probe CMBT was synthesized and characterized. CMBT showed the specific recognition for HClO based on the turn-on blue fluorescence and naked-eye change from pink to colorless. NMR, IR, HRMS-ESI, and spectral analysis suggested that colorimetric and fluorescent change of CMBT to HClO originated from the conversion of CMBT to starting material coumarin-aldehyde 1 caused by the oxidization of HClO, which was responsible for the fluorescence recovery. The detection limit was calculated to be 1.61 μM and 6.58 μM for fluorescence and UV-vis analysis with a range up to 1 mM. HClO's fluorescence detection was successfully achieved in tap and river water samples. The prepared convenient paper test strips showed a distinct color change in varying concentrations of HClO. A multi-input molecular logic circuit was constructed.

Abstract
A novel acylhydrazone-based fluorescent sensor NATB was designed and synthesized for consecutive sensing of Al3+ and H2PO4-. NATB displayed fluorometric sensing to Al3+ and could sequentially detect H2PO4- by fluorescence quenching. The limits of detection for Al3+ and H2PO4- were determined to be 0.83 and 1.7 μM, respectively. The binding ratios of NATB to Al3+ and NATB-Al3+ to H2PO4- were found to be 1:1. The sequential recognition of Al3+ and H2PO4- by NATB could be repeated consecutively. In addition, the practicality of NATB was confirmed with the application of test strips. The sensing mechanisms of Al3+ and H2PO4- by NATB were investigated through fluorescence and UV-Visible spectroscopy, Job plot, ESI-MS, 1H NMR titration, and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Herein, we introduce new ratiometric 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine-based probes (R1 and R2) having three different binding sites for three metal ion binders, which can selectively detect Zn2+ ions and, particularly, the probe R1 strongly interacts with the human lung cancer cell line (A549). Both the probes R1 and R2 are competently selective towards the Zn2+ ions with the detection limits of 1.22 × 10-7 M and 1.13 × 10-7 M, respectively. The changes in the structure and absorption properties of the probes are explained by density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The absorption and fluorescence color change in the solid TLC plate makes it a brilliant Zn2+ sensor in a portable form.

Abstract
Cobalt is an essential micronutrient for human beings. The excessive intake of cobalt may lead to heart-related diseases. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe 1,1'-(((6,11,11-trimethyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-6,9-methanopyridazino[4,5-b]quinoxaline-1,4-diyl)bis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(naphthalen-2-ol) (PDS) was synthesized from camphor. The probe PDS could be utilized to selectively recognize Co2+ over other metal ions. There is a good linear relationship between fluorescence intensity of PDS and Co2+ concentration within 0-20 μM, and its detection limt was found to be 0.925 μM, which is far lower than the national standard for cobalt in drinking water in China. The possible coordination mechanism of PDS with Co2+ was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and density functional theory (DFT). The probe PDS was also successfully applied in detection of Co2+ in tap water and fresh vegetables.

Abstract
A ditopic Schiff base ligand, H2L has been synthesized and characterized by all spectroscopic techniques. It is highly selective and specific towards Al3+ in semi aqueous medium (DMF/H2O mixture) by exhibiting a drastic increase in the fluorescence intensity. The emission studies, spectroscopic data, life time and quantum yield results have been used to understand its binding mode, explore its specificity and establish its efficacy. The intensity difference is remarkable in physiological pH range. Due to its reversible behavior this ditopic fluorescent chemosensor can be used multiple times to make it cost effective. Detection limit for this chemosensor was found to be 0.65 μM. Experiments with TLC plates show that it can be used as a practical and portable sensor for studying environmental samples in real life. The L-Al3+ complex generated in the solution acts as a sensor to sequentially detect pyrophosphate groups present in inorganic pyrophosphates, ATP and ADP among other anions by turning off the fluorescence. Inhibit logic gate and its corresponding truth table has been developed to aid in further exploiting its multidimensional applications.

Abstract
Keeping in view the ever growing demand and application of the organic small
molecules based sensitive and selective fluorescence detection strategies for the trace metallic
ions in the ecosystem, fluids and inside intracellular media, the present literature
survey was focused on the recent development on the organic skeleton based fluorescence
sensor for the zinc ion as Zn2+ is the second most abundant transition metal after iron in
human body. The prominent organic based skeletons introduced during the past three
years for zinc detection including azine, ((Z)-N´-(quinolin-2-ylmethylene)furan-2-
carbohydrazide), nicotinohydrazide, hydrazone, phenolic cage, 4-methyl-2,6-bis[(E)-(2-
(4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl]phenol, bipyridine, N-(quinoline-8-yl)pyridine-2-
carboxamide, anthracene, Schiff base, salen, helicene, Carbon Quantum Dots (CDs) functionalized
with Calix[4]arene, coumarin, diaminomaleonitrile, peptide, hydroxypyrazole, salicylhydrazide were
discussed in detail with particular focus on ligand-zinc complexation mechanism, UV-visible and fluorescence
investigation, spectral variation, isosbestic emergence, limit of detection, ligand-zinc binding stoichiometry,
association/binding constant and applications for intracellular tracing of metallic contamination via confocal
fluorescence microscopic studies. Among the several discussed optical probes, rhodamine and fluorescein
based material offer appreciable sensitivity, exhibiting drawback of pH sensitivity. Probes based on these
ligands triggered “turn-on” signal even in the absence of metals upon fluctuation in pH e.g., acidic in former
case and basic in the latter case. Hydroxypyrazole-based ligands also showed detection signal variation by
switching the pH of the solution. Schiff base and bipyridyl scaffold were found to possess good ligation toward
the several transition metals. Azole, oxazole, thiazole, thiadiazole, hydrazine carboxamide and hydrazine carbothiomide
are the bioactive molecules exhibiting good cell viability and probes designed by using these central
nucleus might be better to invest for intracellular imaging. Symmetrical heterocyclic cage like probe
showed better chelation toward several transition metals and it is a good choice for the design and development
of sensor for simultaneous detection of several transition metals.

Abstract
Rational design chelating fluorescent sensors probing metal ions in biological system are continuously hot essays nowadays, especially for zinc detection. Herein, a naphthylideneimine based zinc fluorescence probe (3) was prepared and characterized in this work. Structural features and optical properties of 3 and its metallic complexes were characterized. Fluorescent experiment indicates 3 is extremely sensitive and selective for Zn2+ with a strong fluorescence enhancement (∼34 folds) in aqueous buffer solution with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.78 × 10-7 mol L-1. Formation constant (logKa) of the chelating complex of 3 and Zn2+ ion was determined to be 4.45. Theoretical studies were carried out to get deep insight into the response mechanism in the sensing process. Density functional theory (DFT) methods calculated formation Gibbs free energy (ΔrGmө) of the deprotonated complexes model (32- ⊃ Zn) is -2.9 kcal/mol, which is in good agreement with the experimental result. The calculation results show that the low excitation states can be ascribe to S0 → T2 and S0 → S1 at 390-430 nm and 310-330 nm, respectively, due to the π → π∗ transition. Finally, yeast cell imaging experiments indicate that 3 can monitor intracellular Zn2+ as well. These findings would enable this fluorescent probe to be used as a Zinc sensor.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent turn-on chemosensor DHADC ((E)-3-((4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)-2,3-dihydrothiophene-2-carboxamide) has been developed and used to detect Zn2+ and CN-. Compound DHADC displayed a notable fluorescence increase with Zn2+. The limit of detection (2.55 ± 0.05 μM) for zinc ion was far below the standard (76 μM) of the WHO (World Health Organization). In particular, compound DHADC could be applied to determine Zn2+ in real samples, and to image Zn2+ in both HeLa cells and zebrafish. Additionally, DHADC could detect CN- through a fluorescence enhancement with little inhibition with the existence of other types of anions. The detection processes of compound DHADC for Zn2+ and CN- were demonstrated with various analytical methods like Job plots, 1H NMR titrations, and ESI-Mass analyses.

Abstract
A new dual functional turn-on chemosensor, 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol-di(isoquinolinyl-1-hydrazone) (HL), has been developed, which could highly selectively discriminate Mg2+ and Zn2+ in different solvent systems. The chemosensor HL exhibits rapid visual turn-on fluorescence enhancing recognition toward Mg2+/Zn2+, which is not interfered by other cations, especially for respective congeners Ca2+/Cd2+. The remarkable fluorescence enhancement (71-fold or 11-fold) was observed after adding Mg2+ in acetonitrile or Zn2+ in DMF-H2O solvent systems. Additionally such a solvent medium-controlled platform could achieve the quantitative determination of Mg2+ and Zn2+ quantitation with low detection limits of 2.97 × 10-8 M and 3.07 × 10-7 M, respectively. Furthermore, the turn-on fluorescence sensing mechanism is also investigated by 1H NMR, FT-IR and ESI-MS spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations derive optimized geometries of HL and its complexes. Notably, non-toxic HL also can be successfully applied as a visual probe for the practical determination of Mg2+/Zn2+ in MCF-7 cells, Zebrafish larvae, syrup and water samples, which might provide extensive application in biology and medicine fields.
