Ozone initiated heterogeneous oxidation of unsaturated carboxylic acids by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy

Cationic surfactants influencing the enhancement of energy efficiency for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) removal in the electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) system

From an environmental perspective, approaching sustainability requires a fundamental conceptual shift from the wastewater treatment process toward integrated treatment systems that consider efficient and effective utilization. This study aims to investigate the effects of different surfactants on the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). We used cationic surfactants as both frothers and collectors in the electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) method to improve the removal efficiency of PFOA. The results showed that, under a monopolar aluminum electrode and with an initial PFOA concentration of 0.25 mM, the ECF method with decyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (DTAB) was able to remove over 98% of PFOA within 10 min. Cationic surfactants with a similar linear alkyl chain shape to PFOA, but a longer chain length, are more effective at removing PFOA through the ECF process. The removal mechanism is thought to involve co-precipitation with aluminum hydroxides through Al-F bonding, co-flotation with cationic surfactants, and mixed micelle formation with cationic surfactants. The optimal conditions were tested in both synthetic and realistic wastewater matrices and produced similar results. It has the potential for real wastewater application. The energy yield (G₅₀) of ECF with 5 mM DTAB is 497 g·kWh^-1, superior to other treatments, and is an extremely energy-effective method for separating PFOA from wastewater.

An Efficient Processing Strategy to Improve the Flavor Profile of Egg Yolk: Ozone-Mediated Oxidation

This study investigated the effect of ozone treatment on egg yolk volatiles and fatty acids. The composition and content of volatile substances and the fatty acid content of the egg yolk were changed significantly after ozonation. With proper ozone treatment (30 min), the aldehyde content in the egg yolk increased from 78.08% to 94.63%, and the relative content of dibutyl amine decreased from 1.50% to 0.00%. There were no significant differences among the types of fatty acids in the egg yolks after being treated with ozone, but there were differences in their relative contents. The results of SDS-PAGE showed no significant difference in yolk protein composition and contents among the groups. SEM results showed that moderate ozone treatment (20 min and 30 min) led to a regular and dense network structure of egg yolk. These results provided a theoretical basis for expanding the application of ozone technology in the egg yolk processing industry.

Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate synthesis by different Azospirillum brasilense strains under varying nitrogen deficiency: A comparative in-situ FTIR spectroscopic analysis

Monitoring of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate accumulation and changes in its relative contents in biomass of the plant-growth-promoting bacteria Azospirillum brasilense (strains Sp7, Cd and Sp245) was performed during aerobic cultivation for 1 to 8 days at various initial concentrations of bound nitrogen (0.1 to 0.5 g∙L^-1 NH₄Cl) in the culture medium using in-situ transmission FTIR spectroscopy. A methodology has been proposed based on calculating band areas in FTIR spectra (instead of band intensities commonly used earlier) for determining relative contents of PHB in dry bacterial biomass, using the ester ν(C=O) band as a PHB marker (in the region 1750-1720 cm^-1) and amide II band of cellular proteins (at ca. 1540 cm^-1). Differences in PHB accumulation levels and their changes in the course of cultivation under various trophic stress for the three strains are discussed in relation to their different ecological niches which they occupy in the rhizosphere.

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopic Analyses of Microbiological Samples and Biogenic Selenium Nanoparticles of Microbial Origin: Sample Preparation Effects

To demonstrate the importance of sample preparation used in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of microbiological materials, bacterial biomass samples with and without grinding and after different drying periods (1.5-23 h at 45 °C), as well as biogenic selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs; without washing and after one to three washing steps) were comparatively studied by transmission FTIR spectroscopy. For preparing bacterial biomass samples, Azospirillum brasilense Sp7 and A. baldaniorum Sp245 (earlier known as A. brasilense Sp245) were used. The SeNPs were obtained using A. brasilense Sp7 incubated with selenite. Grinding of the biomass samples was shown to result in slight downshifting of the bands related to cellular poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) present in the samples in small amounts (under ~10%), reflecting its partial crystallisation. Drying for 23 h was shown to give more reproducible FTIR spectra of bacterial samples. SeNPs were shown to contain capping layers of proteins, polysaccharides and lipids. The as-prepared SeNPs contained significant amounts of carboxylated components in their bioorganic capping, which appeared to be weakly bound and were largely removed after washing. Spectroscopic characteristics and changes induced by various sample preparation steps are discussed with regard to optimising sample treatment procedures for FTIR spectroscopic analyses of microbiological specimens.

The reaction of oleic acid monolayers with gas-phase ozone at the air water interface: the effect of sub-phase viscosity, and inert secondary components

Organic films that form on atmospheric particulate matter change the optical and cloud condensation nucleation properties of the particulate matter and consequently have implications for modern climate and climate models. The organic films are subject to attack from gas-phase oxidants present in ambient air. Here we revisit in greater detail the oxidation of a monolayer of oleic acid by gas-phase ozone at the air-water interface as this provides a model system for the oxidation reactions that occur at the air-water interface of aqueous atmospheric aerosol. Experiments were performed on monolayers of oleic acid at the air-liquid interface at atmospherically relevant ozone concentrations to investigate if the viscosity of the sub-phase influences the rate of the reaction and to determine the effect of the presence of a second component within the monolayer, stearic acid, which is generally considered to be non-reactive towards ozone, on the reaction kinetics as determined by neutron reflectometry measurements. Atmospheric aerosol can be extremely viscous. The kinetics of the reaction were found to be independent of the viscosity of the sub-phase below the monolayer over a range of moderate viscosities, , demonstrating no involvement of aqueous sub-phase oxidants in the rate determining step. The kinetics of oxidation of monolayers of pure oleic acid were found to depend on the surface coverage with different behaviour observed above and below a surface coverage of oleic acid of ∼1 × 1018 molecule m-2. Atmospheric aerosol are typically complex mixtures, and the presence of an additional compound in the monolayer that is inert to direct ozone oxidation, stearic acid, did not significantly change the reaction kinetics. It is demonstrated that oleic acid monolayers at the air-water interface do not leave any detectable material at the air-water interface, contradicting the previous work published in this journal which the authors now believe to be erroneous. The combined results presented here indicate that the kinetics, and thus the atmospheric chemical lifetime for unsaturated surface active materials at the air-water interface to loss by reaction with gas-phase ozone, can be considered to be independent of other materials present at either the air-water interface or in the aqueous sub-phase.

Disulfide polymer grafted polypropylene/polyethylene filter media for selective cadmium removal

Heavy metal pollution caused by stormwater runoff has triggered a demand for effective heavy metal sorbents. Effective heavy metal removal using conventional stormwater runoff treatment processes that employ filtration mechanisms as primary removal mechanisms is difficult. Therefore, we attempt to improve cadmium removal performance by attaching disulfide polymer (DiS-COP) containing soft bases, thiols, onto the surface of polypropylene/polyethylene (PP/PE) fiber media, which is widely used for stormwater runoff treatment. Material characterization demonstrated that DiS-COP was successfully grafted and grown on the surface of PP/PE (Dis-PP/PE). The batch and continuous flow adsorption capacities of Dis-PP/PE were 81.1 mg/g and 2.33 mg/g, respectively, which is 40 times higher than those of pristine PP/PE. Applicability of DiS-PP/PE at pH 6-8 was demonstrated, and effects of calcium and humic acid on cadmium adsorption were investigated. Calcium marginally affected cadmium adsorption, which can be explained using the Hard and soft (Lewis) acids and bases theory (HSAB), but cadmium removal efficiency decreased owing to humic acid (HA)-Cd complex formation and agglomeration in the presence of organic material. In a breakthrough test, the adsorption column exhibited complete cadmium uptake over 24 h until it reached the breakthrough point. Therefore, heavy metal adsorption performance of PP/PE was successfully enhanced by grafting DiS-COP on its surface.

Influence of relative humidity on SO2 oxidation by O3 and NO2 on the surface of TiO2 particles: Potential for formation of secondary sulfate aerosol

The heterogeneous reactions of SO₂/O₃ and SO₂/NO₂ with TiO₂ particles were studied as a function of relative humidities (RHs). An in situ microscopic Fourier transform infrared (micro-FTIR) spectrometer was used to monitor the reaction kinetics. Rapid conversion of SO₂ to sulfate occurs on the surface of TiO₂ particles in the presence of O₃ or NO₂, which is sensitive to RHs. For unreacted (fresh) particles, the uptake coefficients for SO₂ in initial stage are both obviously enhanced over four times with the increasing RH from ~4% to ~85%. Moreover, the uptake coefficient in the system of SO₂/O₃ is about 40% higher than that of SO₂/NO₂ on TiO₂ particles at the similar RH conditions. For TiO₂ after exposure to SO₂/O₃ or SO₂/NO₂ (sulfated) particles, the uptake coefficients for SO₂ in moisture absorption stage are all higher than that on fresh particles in initial stage at the similar RH, indicating rapid mixture gases adsorption with particle hygroscopic growth. The high production of the secondary sulfate for heterogeneous reaction of mixture gases on TiO₂ surface from arid region to humid region provides new insights for better understanding the severe haze under the humid condition.
