Aryl-Phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole: A Versatile Scaffold for the Design of Optical-Based Sensors

Fluorescent and colorimetric sensors are important tools for investigating the chemical compositions of different matrices, including foods, environmental samples, and water. The high sensitivity, low interference, and low detection limits of these sensors have inspired scientists to investigate this class of sensing molecules for ion and molecule detection. Several examples of fluorescent and colorimetric sensors have been described in the literature; this Review focuses particularly on phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazoles. Different strategies have been developed for obtaining phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazoles, which enable modification of their optical properties upon interaction with specific analytes. These sensing responses usually involve changes in the fluorescence intensity and/or color arising from processes like photoinduced electron transfer, intramolecular charge transfer, intramolecular proton transfer in the excited state, and Förster resonance energy transfer. In this Review, we categorized these sensors into two different groups: those bearing formyl groups and their derivatives and those based on other molecular groups. The different optical responses of phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-based sensors upon interaction with specific analytes are discussed.

Dehydroabietylamine-decorated imino-phenols: supramolecular gelation and gel phase selective detection of Fe3+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ ions under different experimental conditions

Dehydroabietylamine-linked Schiff bases 1–3 have been synthesized, characterized and employed in metal ion sensing in a sol–gel medium. The compounds have a propensity for gel formation from aqueous organic solvents.

Au/Ag composite-based SERS nanoprobe of Cr3

Quantitative characterization of Cr³⁺, an important element revealing human metabolism and biological environmental variation, is still difficult to achieve by conventional biochemical methods due to the lack of high-sensitivity, real-time techniques with rapid response detection. Using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), we construct an Au/Ag composite-based SERS nanoprobe for the quantitative characterization of Cr³⁺ content in solution, in which DL-mercaptosuccinic acid (DL-MSA) is employed for Raman signal enhancement, and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) is chosen as the Raman reporter. The achieved result demonstrates obvious advantages of the synthesized Au/Ag composite-based SERS nanoprobe in sensitivity and response speed. Importantly, this Au/Ag composite-based SERS nanoprobe might provide a new strategy for dynamic monitoring of Cr³⁺ content in human metabolism.

The “turn-on” probe PIA(OH)-Py responds to Cu2+ in living cells and can determine the concentration of Cu2+ in blood samples.

Preparation of anthracene-based tetraperimidine hexafluorophosphate and selective recognition of chromium(III) ions

A novel anthracene-based tetraperimidine hexafluorophosphate 3 was prepared, and its structure was determined through X-ray analysis, HRMS as well as ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. In the cationic moiety of 3, two (N-ethylperimidinyl–C₂H₄)₂NCH₂– arms were attached to the 9- and 10-positions of anthracene. In addition, compound 3 was used as a chemosensor to research the ability to recognize Cr³⁺ through fluorescence and UV titrations, HRMS, as well as ¹H NMR and IR spectroscopy. The results indicate that 3 is an effective chemosensor for Cr³⁺.
