Room temperature synthesis of NIR emitting Ag2S nanoparticles through aqueous route and its influence on structural modulation of DNA

In situ growth of Ag2S quantum dots on cellulose nanocrystals and their near-infrared bioimaging performance

Elongated nanoparticles show distinct advantages over spherical nanoparticles in bioimaging because of surface area-to-volume, rate of clearance from the body and elimination mechanism. In this work, we investigated the fluorescence emission properties of the hybrid system by decorating silver sulfide quantum dots (Ag2S QDs) in situ on the surface of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) with unique rod shape, modifiability and biocompatibility. This water-dispersible fluorescent probe has both absorption and fluorescence in near-infrared (NIR) region. By varying the amount of surface ligands, uniformly dispersed Ag2S QDs with different crystalline states but similar sizes were prepared due to the anchoring effect of CNC. The fluorescence quantum yield of fluorescent probes can be improved up to 109-fold (from 0.04 % to 4.36 %). In addition, the CNC-restricted interparticle spacing of Ag2S QDs (< 10 nm), in combination with the overlap of wide fluorescence emission and ultraviolet absorption, significantly enhanced the 1070 nm emission in the NIR-II region via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Further conjugation of these CNC probes with folic acid-polyethylene glycol-amino (FA-PEG-NH2) enables in vitro bioimaging of Hela cells, which are potentially applicable for in vivo cancer detection system. The synthetic strategy provides a new way for one-pot preparation of fluorescent probes with both high NIR-I absorption and NIR-II fluorescence.

Nano-antivirals: A comprehensive review

Nanoparticles can be used as inhibitory agents against various microorganisms, including bacteria, algae, archaea, fungi, and a huge class of viruses. The mechanism of action includes inhibiting the function of the cell membrane/stopping the synthesis of the cell membrane, disturbing the transduction of energy, producing toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), and inhibiting or reducing RNA and DNA production. Various nanomaterials, including different metallic, silicon, and carbon-based nanomaterials and nanoarchitectures, have been successfully used against different viruses. Recent research strongly agrees that these nanoarchitecture-based virucidal materials (nano-antivirals) have shown activity in the solid state. Therefore, they are very useful in the development of several products, such as fabric and high-touch surfaces. This review thoroughly and critically identifies recently developed nano-antivirals and their products, nano-antiviral deposition methods on various substrates, and possible mechanisms of action. By considering the commercial viability of nano-antivirals, recommendations are made to develop scalable and sustainable nano-antiviral products with contact-killing properties.

Exploring the Role of Heavy Metals and Their Derivatives on the Pathophysiology of COVID-19

Many aspects of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its disease, COVID-19, have been studied to determine its properties, transmission mechanisms, and pathology. These efforts are aimed at identifying potential approaches to control or treat the disease. Early treatment of novel SARS-CoV-2 infection to minimize symptom progression has minimal evidence; however, many researchers and firms are working on vaccines, and only a few vaccines exist. COVID-19 is affected by several heavy metals and their nanoparticles. We investigated the effects of heavy metals and heavy metal nanoparticles on SARS-CoV-2 and their roles in COVID-19 pathogenesis. AgNPs, AuNPs, gold-silver hybrid NPs, copper nanoparticles, zinc oxide, vanadium, gallium, bismuth, titanium, palladium, silver grafted graphene oxide, and some quantum dots were tested to see if they could minimize the severity or duration of symptoms in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection when compared to standard therapy.

Silver chalcogenide nanoparticles: a review of their biomedical applications

Silver chalcogenide (Ag2X, where X = S, Se, or Te) nanoparticles have been extensively investigated for their applications in electronics but have only recently been explored for biomedical applications. In the past 10 years, Ag2X, primarily silver sulfides at first, have become of great importance as quantum dots, since they not only possess excellent deep tissue imaging properties in the near-infrared regions I and II, but also have low toxicities. Their appealing properties have led to numerous recent developments of Ag2X for biomedical applications. Furthermore, Ag2X have been discovered in the past 2-3 years to be potent X-ray contrast agents, adding to the numerous biomedical uses of these nanoparticles. In this review, we discuss the most recent advances in silver chalcogenide nanoparticle use in areas such as bio-imaging, theranostics, and biosensors. Moreover, we examine the advances in synthetic approaches for these nanoparticles, which include aqueous and organic syntheses routes. Finally, we discuss the advantages and current limitations in the use of silver chalcogenides for different biomedical applications and their potential for advancement and expansions in use.

Silver-Based Nanomaterials as Therapeutic Agents Against Coronaviruses: A Review

Since the identification of the first human coronavirus in the 1960s, a total of six coronaviruses that are known to affect humans have been identified: 229E, OC43, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), NL63, HKU1, and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Presently, the human world is affected by a novel version of the coronavirus family known as SARS-CoV-2, which has an extremely high contagion rate. Although the infection fatality rate (IFR) of this rapidly spreading virus is not high (ranging from 0.00% to 1.54% across 51 different locations), the increasing number of infections and deaths has created a worldwide pandemic situation. To provide therapy to severely infected patients, instant therapeutic support is urgently needed and the repurposing of already approved drugs is presently in progress. In this regard, the development of nanoparticles as effective transporters for therapeutic drugs or as alternative medicines is highly encouraged and currently needed. The size range of the viruses is within 60-140 nm, which is slightly larger than the diameters of nanoparticles, making nanomaterials efficacious tools with antiviral properties. Silver-based nanomaterials (AgNMs) demonstrate antimicrobial and disinfectant effects mostly by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and are presently considered as a versatile tool for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Other metal-based nanoparticles have been primarily reported as delivery agents or surface modifying agents, vaccine adjuvant against coronavirus. The present review summarizes and discusses the possible effectiveness of various surface-modified AgNMs against animal coronaviruses and presents a concept for AgNM-based therapeutic treatment of SARS-CoV-2 in the near future.
