Wet-spinning of fluorescent fibers based on gold nanoclusters-loaded alginate for sensing of heavy metal ions and anti-counterfeiting

Highly fluorescent hybrid nanofibers as potential nanofibrous scaffolds for studying cell-fiber interactions

In this study, we report on the fabrication of hybrid nanofibers for labeling and bioimaging applications. Our approach is involved for developing highly fluorescent nanofibers using a blend of polylactic acid, polyethyleneglycol, and perylenediimide dyes, through the solution blow spinning technique. The nanofibers are exhibited diameters ranging from 330 nm to 420 nm. Nanofibers showed excellent red and near-infrared fluorescence emissive properties in fluorescent spectroscopy. Moreover, the strong two-photon absorption phenomenon was observed for nanofibers under confocal microscopy. To assess the applicability of these fluorescent nanofibers in bioimaging settings, we employ two types of mammalian cells B16F1 melanoma cells and J774.A1 macrophages. Both cell types exhibit negligible cytotoxicity after 24 h incubation with the nanofibers, indicating the suitability of nanofibers for cell-based experiments. We also observe strong interactions between the nanofibers and cells, as evidenced by two major events: a) the acquisition of an elongated cellular morphology with the major cellular axis parallel to the nanofibers and b) the accumulation of actin filaments along the points of contact of the cells with the fibers. Our findings demonstrate the suitability of these newly developed fluorescent nanofibers in cell-based applications for guiding cellular behavior. We expect that these fluorescent nanofibers have the potential to serve as scaffold materials for long-time tracking of cell-fiber interactions in fluorescence microscopy.

Tackling breast cancer with gold nanoparticles: twinning synthesis and particle engineering with efficacy

The World Health Organization identifies breast cancer as the most prevalent cancer despite predominantly affecting women. Surgery, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are the current treatment modalities. Site-directed nanotherapeutics, engineered with multidimensional functionality are now the frontrunners in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Gold nanoparticles with their unique colloidal, optical, quantum, magnetic, mechanical, and electrical properties have become the most valuable weapon in this arsenal. Their advantages include facile modulation of shape and size, a high degree of reproducibility and stability, biocompatibility, and ease of particle engineering to induce multifunctionality. Additionally, the surface plasmon oscillation and high atomic number of gold provide distinct advantages for tailor-made diagnosis, therapy or theranostic applications in breast cancer such as photothermal therapy, radiotherapy, molecular labeling, imaging, and sensing. Although pre-clinical and clinical data are promising for nano-dimensional gold, their clinical translation is hampered by toxicity signs in major organs like the liver, kidneys and spleen. This has instigated global scientific brainstorming to explore feasible particle synthesis and engineering techniques to simultaneously improve the efficacy and versatility and widen the safety window of gold nanoparticles. The present work marks the first study on gold nanoparticle design and maneuvering techniques, elucidating their impact on the pharmacodynamics character and providing a clear-cut scientific roadmap for their fast-track entry into clinical practice.

A Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensor for Penicillin G Based on Color-Tunable Gold-Silver Nanoclusters

Excessive administration of penicillin G and improper disposal of its residues pose a serious risk to human health; therefore, the development of convenient methods for monitoring penicillin G levels in products is essential. Herein, novel gold-silver nanoclusters (AuAgNCs) were synthesized using chicken egg white and 6-aza-2-thiothymine as dual ligands with strong yellow fluorescence at 509 and 689 nm for the highly selective detection of penicillin G. The AuAgNCs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrophotometry, and fluorescence spectrophotometry. Under optimum conditions, the fluorescence intensity decreased linearly with the concentration of penicillin G from 0.2 to 6 μM, with a low detection limit of 18 nM. Real sample analyses indicated that a sensor developed using the AuAgNCs could detect penicillin G in urine and water samples within 10 min, with the recoveries ranging from 99.7 to 104.0%. The particle size of the AuAgNCs increased from 1.80 to 9.06 nm in the presence of penicillin G. We believe the aggregation-induced quenching of the fluorescence of the AuAgNCs was the main mechanism for the detection of penicillin G. These results demonstrate the ability of our sensor for monitoring penicillin G levels in environmental and clinic samples.

Preparation of Thermosensitive Fluorescent Polyacrylamide Nanofiber Membrane and Visual Temperature Sensing

Fluorescent fibers are capable of discoloration behavior under special light sources, showing great potential for applications in biomedicine, environmental monitoring, heavy-metal-ion detaction, and anti-counterfeiting. In the current paper, temperature-sensitive fluorescent poly-acrylamide (PAM) nanofiber (AuNCs@PAM NF) membranes are prepared by mixing red fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) synthesized in-house with PAM using the electrospinning technique. The AuNCs@PAM nanofibers obtained using this method present excellent morphology, and the AuNCs are uniformly dispersed in the fibers. The average diameter of the AuNCs@PAM NFs is 298 nm, and the diameter of AuNCs doped in the fibers is approximately 2.1 nm. Furthermore, the AuNCs@PAM NF films present excellent fluorescence and temperature-sensitive performance between 15 and 65 degrees. While under the 365 nm UV light source, the fiber film changes from white to red; this discoloration behavior weakens with the increase in temperature, and changes from deep to light red. Therefore, the approximate temperature can be identified using the color change, and a visual temperature-sensing effect can be achieved. The dual functions of temperature-sensitivity and fluorescent properties improve the scientificity and safety of nanofibers in the use of anti-counterfeiting technology.

Advances in constructing silver nanowire-based conductive pathways for flexible and stretchable electronics

With their soaring technological demand, flexible and stretchable electronics have attracted many researchers' attention for a variety of applications. The challenge which was identified a decade ago and still remains, however, is that the conventional electrodes based on indium tin oxide (ITO) are not suitable for ultra-flexible electronic devices. The main reason is that ITO is brittle and expensive, limiting device performance and application. Thus, it is crucial to develop new materials and processes to construct flexible and stretchable electrodes with superior quality for next-generation soft devices. Herein, various types of conductive nanomaterials as candidates for flexible and stretchable electrodes are briefly reviewed. Among them, silver nanowire (AgNW) is selected as the focus of this review, on account of its excellent conductivity, superior flexibility, high technological maturity, and significant presence in the research community. To fabricate a reliable AgNW-based conductive network for electrodes, different processing technologies are introduced, and the corresponding characteristics are compared and discussed. Furthermore, this review summarizes strategies and the latest progress in enhancing the conductive pathway. Finally, we showcase some exemplary applications and provide some perspectives about the remaining technical challenges for future research.

Alginate-Based Bio-Composites and Their Potential Applications

Over the last two decades, bio-polymer fibers have attracted attention for their uses in gene therapy, tissue engineering, wound-healing, and controlled drug delivery. The most commonly used bio-polymers are bio-sourced synthetic polymers such as poly (glycolic acid), poly (lactic acid), poly (e-caprolactone), copolymers of polyglycolide and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate), and natural polymers such as chitosan, soy protein, and alginate. Among all of the bio-polymer fibers, alginate is endowed with its ease of sol–gel transformation, remarkable ion exchange properties, and acid stability. Blending alginate fibers with a wide range of other materials has certainly opened many new opportunities for applications. This paper presents an overview on the modification of alginate fibers with nano-particles, adhesive peptides, and natural or synthetic polymers, in order to enhance their properties. The application of alginate fibers in several areas such as cosmetics, sensors, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and water treatment are investigated. The first section is a brief theoretical background regarding the definition, the source, and the structure of alginate. The second part deals with the physico-chemical, structural, and biological properties of alginate bio-polymers. The third part presents the spinning techniques and the effects of the process and solution parameters on the thermo-mechanical and physico-chemical properties of alginate fibers. Then, the fourth part presents the additives used as fillers in order to improve the properties of alginate fibers. Finally, the last section covers the practical applications of alginate composite fibers.

Research on Preparation of Three-Component Composite Fiber with Complex Cross-Sectional Pattern

In this work, a preparation method of three-component composite fibers with complex cross-sectional patterns was proposed, and the fibers with complex cross-sectional patterns were fabricated using melt spinning. Initially, inspired by the shape of a fishbone, a spinning pack with three-component melt channels was designed for spinning fibers with a "fishbone" cross-sectional pattern. Then, the numerical simulation of the melt flow in the channels of the spinning pack was performed using Polyflow software. The spinning pack structure was optimized by analyzing the flow velocity distribution and shear rate distribution of different components within the spinning pack channels. The results showed that smaller velocity fluctuations contribute to the clarity of the cross-sectional pattern. Thereafter, the spinning experiments were carried out based on the optimized spinning pack. The effect of the flow ratio between the three components on the cross-sectional pattern was discussed, and the three-component composite fibers with a clear "fishbone" cross-sectional pattern were obtained. Finally, in order to further study the effectiveness of the complex cross-sectional pattern fiber preparation proposed in this paper, another spinning pack for fibers with an "H-shaped" cross-sectional pattern was designed according to the aforementioned method, and spinning experiments were carried out. The SEM images of the cross-sections of fibers with "fishbone" and "H-shaped" cross-sectional patterns were obtained, verifying the feasibility of the method proposed in this paper. Moreover, the fibers with complex cross-sectional patterns obtained by this method have a certain anti-counterfeiting effect and can also be blended with other yarns to obtain fabrics with anti-counterfeiting effects.

Materials, Preparation Strategies, and Wearable Sensor Applications of Conductive Fibers: A Review

The recent advances in wearable sensors and intelligent human-machine interfaces have sparked a great many interests in conductive fibers owing to their high conductivity, light weight, good flexibility, and durability. As one of the most impressive materials for wearable sensors, conductive fibers can be made from a variety of raw sources via diverse preparation strategies. Herein, to offer a comprehensive understanding of conductive fibers, we present an overview of the recent progress in the materials, the preparation strategies, and the wearable sensor applications related. Firstly, the three types of conductive fibers, including metal-based, carbon-based, and polymer-based, are summarized in terms of their principal material composition. Then, various preparation strategies of conductive fibers are established. Next, the primary wearable sensors made of conductive fibers are illustrated in detail. Finally, a robust outlook on conductive fibers and their wearable sensor applications are addressed.

SERS active fibers from wet-spinning of alginate with gold nanoparticles for pH sensing

Functional composite fibers were prepared by a wet-spinning method and used for pH sensing based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Alginate solution with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was spun to fibers that acting as active substrate showed distinct SERS enhancement for low concentrations of dyes (1.0 × 10^-9 M for rhodamine 6G and 1.0 × 10^-8 M for crystal violet). After AuNPs were modified with 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY), the as-synthesized composite fibers (AuNPs@4-MPY/Ca-ALG fibers) displayed pH dependent SERS spectra due to the changes of chemical structures of 4-MPY under different pH conditions. The AuNPs@4-MPY/Ca-ALG fibers achieved fast response to the pH changes between 1.00 and 13.00. The flexible composite fibers were woven to a wearable "wrist band", which has potential applications in health monitoring involving pH variation.

A novel organometallic magnesium complexes with aggregation induced emission properties: synthesis, characterization, and fluorescent fibres applications

In this work, a novel organomagnesium complex with outstanding aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties was synthesized using dibenzoylmethane (DBM) as the ligand. The structure of the complex was confirmed to be one magnesium ion coordinated to the diones groups of two DBM molecules, and the magnesium ion adopted a distorted octahedrally geometry. The obvious emission was found for Mg(DBM) 2 powder and not in the solution, which was the first reported organomagnesium complex with AIE property. The properties of complexes were investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory calculations. Moreover, the Mg(DBM) 2 solution dispersed in fifilter paper was nearly colorless, which could be made into a convenient anti-counterfeiting and encryption tool. Mg(DBM) 2 /alginate fibres were prepared by wet-spinning process and further processed into paper, which could be used in the fields of sensor, anti-counterfeiting and encryption. Sweat contains a wealth of chemical information that could potentially indicate the body's deeper biomolecular state. The prepared fluorescent fibres were used to detect sweat due to its non-toxic, low-cost efficient and fast response to analytes.

Ligand-protected nanoclusters and their role in agriculture, sensing and allied applications

Nano biotechnology, when coupled with green chemistry, can revolutionize human life because of the vast opportunities and benefits it can offer to the quality of human life. Luminescent metal nanoclusters (NCs) have recently developed as a potential research area with applications in different areas like medical, imaging, sensing etc. Recently these new candidates have proved to be beneficial in the food supply chain enabling controlled release of nutrients, pesticides and as nanosensors for the detection of contaminants and play roles in healthy food storage and maintaining food quality. An assortment of nanomaterials has been employed for these applications and reviews have been published on the use of nanotechnology in agriculture. Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters are a distinctive class of small organic-inorganic nanostructures that garnered immense research interest in recent years owing to their stability at specific "magic size" compositions along with tunable properties that make them promising candidates for a wide range of nanotechnology-based applications. This review tries to consolidate the recent developments in the area of ligand-protected nanoclusters in connection with the detection of pesticides, food contaminants, heavy metal ions and plant growth monitoring for healthy agricultural practices. Its antimicrobial activity to manage the microbial contamination is highlighted. The review also throws light on the various perspectives by which food production and allied areas will be transformed in future.

Biocompatible and Biodegradable Polymer Optical Fiber for Biomedical Application: A Review

This article discusses recent advances in biocompatible and biodegradable polymer optical fiber (POF) for medical applications. First, the POF material and its optical properties are summarized. Then, several common optical fiber fabrication methods are thoroughly discussed. Following that, clinical applications of biocompatible and biodegradable POFs are discussed, including optogenetics, biosensing, drug delivery, and neural recording. Following that, biomedical applications expanded the specific functionalization of the material or fiber design. Different research or clinical applications necessitate the use of different equipment to achieve the desired results. Finally, the difficulty of implanting flexible fiber varies with its flexibility. We present our article in a clear and logical manner that will be useful to researchers seeking a broad perspective on the proposed topic. Overall, the content provides a comprehensive overview of biocompatible and biodegradable POFs, including previous breakthroughs, as well as recent advancements. Biodegradable optical fibers have numerous applications, opening up new avenues in biomedicine.

Fluorescent noble metal nanoclusters for contaminants analysis in food matrix

Recently, food safety issues caused by contaminants have aroused great public concern. The development of innovative and efficient sensing techniques for contaminants detection in food matrix is in urgent demand. As fluorescent nanomaterials, noble metal nanoclusters have attracted much attention because of their ease of synthesis, enhanced catalytic activity and biocompatibility, and most importantly, excellent photoluminescence property that provides promising analytical applications. This review comprehensively introduced the synthesis method of noble metal nanoclusters, and summarized the application of metal nanoclusters as fluorescent sensing materials in the detection of pollutants, including pesticides, heavy metal, mycotoxin, food additives, and other contaminants in food. The detection mechanism of pesticide residues mostly relies on the inhibition of natural enzymes. For heavy metals, the detection mechanism is mainly related to the interaction between metal ions and nanoclusters or ligands. It is evidenced that metal nanoclusters have great potential application in the field of food safety monitoring. Moreover, challenges and future trends of nanoclusters were discussed. We hope that this review can provide insights and directions for the application of nanoclusters in contaminants detection.

Soft and Stretchable Optical Waveguide: Light Delivery and Manipulation at Complex Biointerfaces Creating Unique Windows for On-Body Sensing

Over the past few decades, optical waveguides have been increasingly used in wearable/implantable devices for on-body sensing. However, conventional optical waveguides are stiff, rigid, and brittle. A mismatch between conventional optical waveguides and complex biointerfaces makes wearable/implantable devices uncomfortable to wear and potentially unsafe. Soft and stretchable polymer optical waveguides not only inherit many advantages of conventional optical waveguides (e.g., immunity to electromagnetic interference and without electrical hazards) but also provide a new perspective for solving the mismatch between conventional optical waveguides and complex biointerfaces, which is essential for the development of light-based wearable/implantable sensors. In this review, polymer optical waveguides' unique properties, including flexibility, biocompatibility and biodegradability, porosity, and stimulus responsiveness, and their applications in the wearable/implantable field in recent years are summarized. Then, we briefly discuss the current challenges of high optical loss, unstable signal transmission, low manufacturing efficiency, and difficulty in deployment during implantation of flexible polymer optical waveguides, and propose some possible solutions to these problems.

Fabrication and characterization of multi stimuli-responsive fibers via wet-spinning process

Luminescent fibers have attracted much attention due to their application in smart textiles for anti-counterfeiting, camouflage, fashion designs and so on. However, fibers with single function of luminescent is fail to meet the growing demand of smart textiles. Herein, we develop a multifunctional fiber with quick-responsive reversible photochromic and light-emitting with long afterglow. Doping with rare earth material SrAl₂O₄:Eu²⁺, Dy³⁺ phosphors and photochromic pigments into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers enable by facile wet-spinning process, the properties of photochromic luminescent fibers were experimentally investigated in details. The results make clear that resulting fibers exhibit quick-responsive reversible photochromic properties and can be excited by a wide range of ray from 300 to 450 nm, displaying a wide band with a maximum peak at 525 nm. The photochromic pigments and SrAl₂O₄:Eu²⁺, Dy³⁺ phosphors distributed in fibers evenly and the fibers are stable below 258.76 °C. Persistent luminescent properties of fibers are excellent and the afterglow can last for more than 1 h. The ultimate strength of fibers are more than 1.39 MPa. Comparing with a lot of investigated luminescent fibers, our work to photochromic luminescent fibers show huge potential in anti-counterfeiting, aesthetics fashion designs and so on for smart textiles.

Melt-Spun Photoluminescent Polymer Optical Fibers for Color-Tunable Textile Illumination

The increasing interest in luminescent waveguides, applied as light concentrators, sensing elements, or decorative illuminating systems, is fostering efforts to further expand their functionality. Yarns and textiles based on a combination of distinct melt-spun polymer optical fibers (POFs), doped with individual luminescent dyes, can be beneficial for such applications since they enable easy tuning of the color of emitted light. Based on the energy transfer occurring between differently dyed filaments within a yarn or textile, the collective emission properties of such assemblies are adjustable over a wide range. The presented study demonstrates this effect using multicolor, meltspun, and photoluminescent POFs to measure their superimposed photoluminescent emission spectra. By varying the concentration of luminophores in yarn and fabric composition, the overall color of the resulting photoluminescent textiles can be tailored by the recapturing of light escaping from individual POFs. The ensuing color space is a mean to address the needs of specific applications, such as decorative elements and textile illumination by UV down-conversion.

Electrospun Alginate Nanofibers Toward Various Applications: A Review

Alginate has been a material of choice for a spectrum of applications, ranging from metal adsorption to wound dressing. Electrospinning has added a new dimension to polymeric materials, including alginate, which can be processed to their nanosize levels in order to afford unique nanostructured materials with fascinating properties. The resulting nanostructured materials often feature high porosity, stability, permeability, and a large surface-to-volume ratio. In the present review, recent trends on electrospun alginate nanofibers from over the past 10 years toward advanced applications are discussed. The application of electrospun alginate nanofibers in various fields such as bioremediation, scaffolds for skin tissue engineering, drug delivery, and sensors are also elucidated.
