Fabrication of amine functionalized CdSe@SiO2 nanoparticles as fluorescence nanosensor for highly selective and sensitive detection of picric acid

Tellurium Containing Long Lived Emissive Fluorophore for Selective and Visual Detection of Picric Acid through Photo-Induced Electron Transfer

A novel tellurium (Te) containing fluorophore, 1 and its nickel (2) and copper (3) containing metal organic complex (MOC) have been synthesized to exploit their structural and optical properties and to deploy these molecules as fluorescent probes for the selective and sensitive detection of picric acid (PA) over other commonly available nitro-explosives. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) techniques revealed the inclusion of "soft" Tellurium (Te) and "hard" Nitrogen (N), Oxygen (O) atoms in the molecular frameworks. Owing to the presence of electron rich "N" and "O" atoms along with "Te" in the molecular framework, 1 could efficiently and selectively sense PA with more than 80 % fluorescence quenching efficiency in organic medium and having detection limit of 4.60 μM. The selective detection of PA compared to other nitro-explosives follows a multi-mechanism based "turn-off" sensing which includes photo-induced electron transfer (PET), electrostatic (π-π stacking and π-anion/cation) interaction, intermolecular hydrogen bonding and inner filter effect (IFE). The test strip study also establishes the sensitivity of 1 for detection of PA.

Colloidal Quantum Dots for Explosive Detection: Trends and Perspectives

Sensitive, accurate, and reliable detection of explosives has become one of the major needs for international security and environmental protection. Colloidal quantum dots, because of their unique chemical, optical, and electrical properties, as well as easy synthesis route and functionalization, have demonstrated high potential to meet the requirements for the development of suitable sensors, boosting the research in the field of explosive detection. Here, we critically review the most relevant research works, highlighting three different mechanisms for explosive detection based on colloidal quantum dots, namely photoluminescence, electrochemical, and chemoresistive sensing. We provide a comprehensive overview and an extensive discussion and comparison in terms of the most relevant sensor parameters. We highlight advantages, limitations, and challenges of quantum dot-based explosive sensors and outline future research directions for the advancement of knowledge in this surging research field.

Optical gas sensor based on the combination of a QD photoluminescent probe and a QD photodetector

We report on a sensor architecture for detection of hazardous gases. The proposed device is based on the integration of a solid-state quantum dot (QD) photoluminescent probe with a QD photodetector on the same substrate. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated by developing a compact optical sensor for trace detection of explosives in air. The proposed architecture is very simple and consists of a silicon substrate with both surfaces coated with QD films. The upper layer acts as photoluminescent probe, pumped by a blue LED. The change of photoluminescence intensity associated to the interaction between the QDs and the target analyte is measured by the QD photodetector fabricated on the opposite side of the substrate. The sensor is mounted into a small chamber provided with the LED and the front-end electronics. The device is characterized by using nitrobenzene as representative nitroaromatic compound. Extremely low concentrations (down to 0.1 ppm) can be detected by the proposed device, with a theoretical detection limit estimated to be as low as 2 ppb. Results are repeatable and no ageing effect is observed over a 70 d period. The proposed architecture may provide a promising solution for explosive detection in air as well as other sensing applications, thanks to its sensitivity, simple fabrication process, practical usability and cost effectiveness.

Rapid fluorescent color analysis of copper ions on a smart phone via ratiometric fluorescence sensor

A smartphone-assisted fluorescence color sensing system for rapid, convenient, and on-site detection of copper ions was developed. The ratiometric fluorescence sensor was fabricated by using silica-coated blue-light-emitting carbon dots and surface-grafted red-light-emitting cadmium-telluride quantum dots. After exposure to Cu²⁺ in 20 s, the red fluorescence was quenched obviously, while the blue fluorescence remained unchanged, and the sensor color changes continuously from red to blue under the ultraviolet lamp. The concentration (50-1200 nM) of copper ions could be measured by the fluorescence spectrum (excitation at 360 nm, dual-emission at 441 and 640 nm) with a detection limit of 7.7 nM. The fluorescence colors were converted to digital RGB values to calculate the concentration of copper ions by a smartphone with a detection limit of 9.6 nM. The method was applied to detecting copper ions spiked in real samples with recovery from 97.9 to 108.0% and RSD from 3.8 to 8.9%. Thus, this convenient and practical fluorescence color sensing system presents a new strategy for rapid, sensitive, and on-site determination of copper ions in environmental or biological samples.

Rapid optical sensor for recognition of explosive 2,4,6-TNP traces in water through fluorescent ZnSe quantum dots

In this report, blue fluorescent zinc selenide quantum dots (ZnSe QDs) were synthesized using 3-mercaptopropionic acid through a direct aqueous route at a lower temperature of 70 °C. The photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of ZnSe QDs have been employed to recognize nitroaromatic compounds, i.e., traces of 2,4,6-TNP (picric acid) in water. The sensing of nitroaromatic compounds was performed via fluorescence techniques. The PL band of ZnSe QDs observed at 490 nm is selectively quenched with an increasing concentration of picric acid in DI water and river water. For the proposed sensing probe, the Stern-Volmer (S-V) plot shows linearity over the range of 2.0 µM-0.25 mM with the detection limit of 12.4 × 10^-6 M without any interference effect of other nitroaromatic compounds. The plausible mechanism of PL quenching is considered as the inner filter effect, based on absorption, PL and PL lifetimes.

Colorimetric optical nanosensors for trace explosive detection using metal nanoparticles: advances, pitfalls, and future perspective

Warfare threats and acts of terror are challenging situations encountered by defense agencies across the globe and are of growing concern to the general public, and security-minded policy makers. Detecting ultra-low quantities of explosive compounds in remote locations or under harsh conditions for anti-terror purposes as well as the environmental monitoring of residual or discarded explosives in soil, remains a major challenge. The use of metal nanoparticles (NPs) for trace explosive detection has drawn considerable interest in recent years. For nano-based explosive sensor devices to meet real-life operational demands, analytical parameters such as, long-shelf life, stability under harsh conditions, ease-of-use, high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and rapid signal response must be met. Generally, the analytical performance of colorimetric-based nanosensor systems is strongly dependent on the surface properties of the nanomaterial used in the colorimetric assay. The size and shape properties of metal NPs, surface functionalisation efficiency, and assay fabrication methods, are factors that influence the efficacy of colorimetric explosive nanosensor systems. This review reports on the design and analytical performances of colorimetric explosive sensor systems using metal NPs as optical signal transducers. The challenges of trace explosive detection, advances in metal NP colorimetric explosive design, limitations of each methods, and possible strategies to mitigate the problems are discussed.

Recent Developments in the Field of Explosive Trace Detection

Explosive trace detection (ETD) technologies play a vital role in maintaining national security. ETD remains an active research area with many analytical techniques in operational use. This review details the latest advances in animal olfactory, ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), and Raman and colorimetric detection methods. Developments in optical, biological, electrochemical, mass, and thermal sensors are also covered in addition to the use of nanomaterials technology. Commercially available systems are presented as examples of current detection capabilities and as benchmarks for improvement. Attention is also drawn to recent collaborative projects involving government, academia, and industry to highlight the emergence of multimodal screening approaches and applications. The objective of the review is to provide a comprehensive overview of ETD by highlighting challenges in ETD and providing an understanding of the principles, advantages, and limitations of each technology and relating this to current systems.
