Insights for vibronic effects on spectral shapes of electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence of aza[7]helicene

Significance of Vibronic Coupling that Shapes Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Double Helicenes

The circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of S- and X-shaped double helicenes exhibit distinct vibrational structures and overall shape variations. In this study, we conducted an in-depth investigation into the vibronic effects influencing the CPL spectra of two double helicenes, namely DPC and DNH. Employing state-of-the-art computations utilizing the FC-HT1|VH model at the CAM-B3LYP/def2-TZVP level, we unveiled the paramount impact of Franck-Condon (FC), Herzberg-Teller (HT), and Duschinsky effects on their chiroptical responses. Our research underscores the pivotal role of structural deformations associated with the S1-to-S0 electronic transition in molding CPL spectra and wavelength-dependent dissymmetry (g) factor values, as well as the significance of HT effects in shaping and enhancing CPL responses. This extensive investigation not only advances our comprehension of the vibronic characteristics in configurationally distinct double helicenes but also offers valuable insights for the design of chiral molecules featuring controllable or finely-tunable CPL responses.

Azaborahelicene fluorophores derived from four-coordinate N,C-boron chelates: synthesis, photophysical and chiroptical properties

A series of six azaborahelicenes with varying electron-donor substitution at the 4-position of the aryl residue (i.e., naphthyl) or with variable π-extension of the aryl residue (thianthrenyl, anthryl, pyrenyl) was prepared with an efficient and flexible synthetic protocol. These different types of functionalization afforded notably pronounced intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) character for the dyes with the strongest electron donor substitution (NMe2) or easiest to oxidize aryl residues, as evidenced by photophysical investigations. These effects also impact the corresponding chiroptical properties of the separated M- and P-enantiomers, which notably display circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with dissymmetry factors in the order of magnitude of 10-4 to 10-3. Theoretical calculations confirm the optical spectroscopy data and are in agreement with the proposed involvement of ICT processes.

Upon DFT-D3 dispersion correction and ECD spectral confirmation, only several conformers can stably coexist for three fungal cycloaspeptides (A, D, G)

Dispersion correction in theoretical determination of cyclopeptide conformations is emphasized. Whether in gas approximation or in solvation simulation, the density functional theory with London dispersion correction (DFT-D3) demonstrates that only 2-3 conformers can stably coexist for cycloaspeptides (A, D, G) at B3LYP-D3 and CAM-B3LYP-D3. Conformational rationality is confirmed by electronic circular dichroism (ECD). Whether for Cotton effect or for excitation energy, TD-B3LYP-D3 has better performances than TD-CAM-B3LYP-D3 because the former can better reproduce the experiment. A molecular orbital analysis is used to interpret ECD, where two energy bands observed in experiment originates from the ππ* transitions other than the σπ* transitions. Long-range correction and solvent effect make H-bonds shorten, and dispersion correction makes them further shorten.

Helical donor-acceptor platinum complexes displaying dual luminescence and near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence

A series of chiral platina[5]helicenes displaying dual luminescence, i.e., fluorescence between 450 and 600 nm and red/NIR phosphorescence between 700 and 900 nm, has been synthesised, characterised and studied by first-principle calculations. This unusual behavior has been attributed to limited electronic interactions between the d orbitals of the metal and the π-orbitals of the organic ligand on the excited-state. Accordingly, the electron richness of the donor group on the helical ligand does not affect the energy of the phosphorescence process but does play a role on its efficiency. Interestingly, near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence can be obtained for the three complexes with dissymmetry factors up to 3 × 10^-3 at 750 nm.

Circularly Polarized Fluorescent Helicene-Boranils: Synthesis, Photophysical and Chiroptical Properties

Mono- and di-boranil-substituted helicenes were prepared by BF₂ -borylation of the corresponding anils, readily synthesized by condensation of 2-amino- and 2,15-diamino-helicenes with 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde. After enantiomeric resolution using HPLC, their chiroptical properties including circularly polarized fluorescence in solution and in PMMA films were investigated and rationalized with the help of NMR, X-ray and quantum-chemical calculations.

Achieving high circularly polarized luminescence with push-pull helicenic systems: from rationalized design to top-emission CP-OLED applications

While the development of chiral molecules displaying circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has received considerable attention, the corresponding CPL intensity, g lum, hardly exceeds 10-2 at the molecular level owing to the difficulty in optimizing the key parameters governing such a luminescence process. To address this challenge, we report here the synthesis and chiroptical properties of a new family of π-helical push-pull systems based on carbo[6]helicene, where the latter acts as either a chiral electron acceptor or a donor unit. This comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation shows that the magnitude and relative orientation of the electric (μe ) and magnetic (μ m ) dipole transition moments can be tuned efficiently with regard to the molecular chiroptical properties, which results in high g lum values, i.e. up to 3-4 × 10-2. Our investigations revealed that the optimized mutual orientation of the electric and magnetic dipoles in the excited state is a crucial parameter to achieve intense helicene-mediated exciton coupling, which is a major contributor to the obtained strong CPL. Finally, top-emission CP-OLEDs were fabricated through vapor deposition, which afforded a promising g El of around 8 × 10-3. These results bring about further molecular design guidelines to reach high CPL intensity and offer new insights into the development of innovative CP-OLED architectures.

A computational study of the vibronic effects on the electronic spectra and the photophysics of aza[7]helicene

We report a computational study on vibronic effects in the spectroscopy, photoinduced processes and decay back to the ground state of aza[7]helicene, a helicene with an unusually high fluorescence quantum yield (QY = 0.39). In a first step, we compute and assign the absorption and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra in its full frequency range from 2.7 to 5.0 eV, accounting for nonadiabatic effects. Then we compute the quantum dynamics of the cascade of ultrafast internal conversions of the highly-excited singlet states to the lowest-energy one S1. Finally we adopt Fermi golden rule rates to compute the QY of the dye, taking into account the competition between the radiative decay and the nonradiative decays to the ground state and to the energy-accessible triplet states. We use time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), including solvent (dichloromethane) effects within the polarizable continuum model, to parameterize a linear vibronic coupling (LVC) model involving the first lowest 12 singlet states and all the normal coordinates. Nonadiabatic spectra and internal conversions dynamics are then computed through wavepacket propagations with the Multilayer (ML) extension of the Multiconfigurational Time Dependent Hartree method (ML-MCTDH). We highlight the molecular vibrations playing a major role in determining the shape of the spectra and analyse the effect of inter-state couplings. At the same time we report a breakdown of perturbative Herzberg-Teller approach. The computed QY is in perfect agreement with experiment and allows us to ascertain that intersystem crossings are the processes limiting the fluorescence from S1. They involve the three lowest triplet states and are made effective by spin-orbit coupling and vibronic effects.

Dinuclear Rhenium Complexes with a Bridging Helicene-bis-bipyridine Ligand: Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical and Chiroptical Properties

By attaching pyridine groups to a diaza[6]helicene, a helical, bis-ditopic, bis-N N-coordinating ligand can be accessed. Dinuclear rhenium complexes featuring this bridging ligand, of the form [{Re(CO)₃ Cl}₂ (N N-N N)], have been prepared and resolved to give enantiopure complexes. These complexes are phosphorescent in solution at room temperature under one- and two-photon excitation. Their experimental chiroptical properties (optical rotation, electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized emission) have been measured. They show, for instance, emission dissymmetry factors of c.a. ±3x10^-3 . Quantum-chemical calculations indicate the importance of stereochemistry on the optical activity, pointing towards further design improvements in such types of complexes.
