Eu doped Ti3C2 quantum dots to form a ratiometric fluorescence platform for visual and quantitative point-of-care testing of tetracycline derivatives

Luminol-Eu3+-Gd3+-functionalized mesoporous silica for ultrasensitive detection of tetracycline antibiotics and smartphone-assisted sensing analysis

An organic-inorganic hybrid nanoprobe, namely LML-D-SBA@Eu3+-Gd3+, was constructed, with SBA-15 acting as the carrier material, and luminol and Eu3+ acting as fluorescence channels to achieve ratiometric signals that eliminate external interference (accurate detection). Gd3+ was used as a sensitizer to amplify the red emission of Eu3+ (ultrasensitive detection). In TCs detection, the luminol emission at 428 nm was quenched due to the photoinduced electron transfer mechanism, and the Eu3+ emission at 617 nm was sensitized due to the synergistic energy transfer from TCs and Gd3+ to Eu3+. The fluorescence intensity at 617 and 428 nm showed ratiometric changes as indicated by notable color changes from blue to red. The detection limits for TC and OTC were 0.21 and 0.08 ng/mL, respectively. To realize a facile, rapid, and cost-effective detection, we constructed a portable intelligent sensing platform based on smartphones, and it demonstrated great potential for on-site detection of TCs.

Recent progress in lanthanide-based fluorescent nanomaterials for tetracycline detection and removal

Tetracycline (TC) has been widely used in clinical medicine and animal growth promotion due to its broad-spectrum antibacterial properties and affordable prices. Unfortunately, the high toxicity and difficult degradation rate of TC molecules make them easy to accumulate in the environment, which breaks the ecological balance and seriously threatens human health. Rapid and accurate detection of TC residue levels is important for ensuring water quality and food safety. Recently, fluorescence detection technology of TC residues has developed rapidly. Lanthanide nanomaterials, based on the high luminescence properties of lanthanide ions and the high matching with TC energy levels, are favored in the real-time trace detection of TC due to their advantages of high sensitivity, rapidity, and high selectivity. Therefore, they are considered potential substitutes for traditional detection methods. This review summarizes the synthesis strategy, TC response mechanism, removal mechanism, and applications in intelligent sensing. Finally, the development of lanthanide nanomaterials for TC fluorescence detection and removal is reasonably summarized and prospected. This review provides a reference for the establishment of a method for the accurate determination of TC content in complex food matrices.

Smartphone-assisted colorimetric dual-mode sensing system based on europium-doped metal-organic frameworks for rapid on-site visual detection of Fe3+ and doxycycline

Exploring a rapid, sensitive, low-cost, in-situ intelligent monitoring multi-target fluorescence detection platform is important for food safety and environmental monitoring. A dual-mode ratiometric fluorescence sensing system integrated with a smartphone based on a luminescent metal-organic framework (NH2-MIL-53) and CdTe/Eu was developed for visual, in-situ analysis of Fe3+ and doxycycline (DOX) in this paper. Interestingly, with increasing Fe3+ concentration, the fluorescence sensing system exhibits dual-emission with CdTe QDs at 540 nM as the response signal and NH2-MIL-53 at 438 nm as the reference signal, resulting in a significant color shift of fluorescence color from blue-green to blue, with a linear range of 5--1550 nM and a detection limit of 1.08 nM. In the presence of DOX, the blue fluorescence of NH2-MIL-53 and the green fluorescence of CdTe QDs were quenched respectively by the internal filtering effect and the photoelectron transfer effect. While DOX enhances the red fluorescence of Eu3+ by the antenna effect, forming a triple-emission fluorescence sensor. The visual color of this fluorescent sensor shifted from blue green to grey to pink-white to pink to fuchsia to red as the DOX concentration increased with a detection limit of 0.11 nM. Furthermore, the developed intelligent sensing platform achieved real-time in-situ detection of Fe3+ and DOX with detection limit of 1.47 nM and 6.43 nM, respectively. The platform was applied to detection actual samples with satisfactory results, which proved a promising application for real-time on-site food safety monitoring and human health monitoring.

The construction of dual-emissive ratiometric fluorescent probes based on fluorescent nanoparticles for the detection of metal ions and small molecules

With the rapid development of fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs), such as CDs, QDs, and MOFs, the construction of FNP-based probes has played a key role in improving chemical sensors. Ratiometric fluorescent probes exhibit distinct advantages, such as resistance to environmental interference and achieving visualization. Thus, FNP-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probes (DRFPs) have rapidly developed in the field of metal ion and small molecule detection in the past few years. In this review, firstly we introduce the fluorescence sensing mechanisms; then, we focus on the strategies for the fabrication of DRFPs, including hybrid FNPs, single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission and target-induced new emission, and DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles. In the section on hybrid FNPs, methods to assemble two types of FNPs, such as chemical bonding, electrostatic interaction, core satellite or core-shell structures, coordination, and encapsulation, are introduced. In the section on single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission, methods for the design of dual-emission CDs, QDs, and MOFs are discussed. Regarding target-induced new emission, sensitization, coordination, hydrogen bonding, and chemical reaction induced new emissions are discussed. Furthermore, in the section on DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles, auxiliary nanomaterials with the inner filter effect and enzyme mimicking activity are discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and an outlook on the future of DRFP are presented. We sincerely hope that this review will contribute to the quick understanding and exploration of DRFPs by researchers.

Amino-functionalized Al-MOF modulated TpTt-COF with dual-emission for fluorescent and optosmart detecting tetracycline in food samples

Tetracycline residues in animal-derived food pose serious harm to human health, making it demanded to develop simple and sensitive method for detecting tetracycline. Herein, a dual-emission synchronous response fluorescence probe is reported based on amino-functionalized Al-MOF modulated TpTt-COF (donate as NMT). NMT exhibits excellent dual-emission at 455 and 575 nm under single excitation. Tetracycline is sensitively detected through quenching the dual-emission of NMT. NMT specifically recognizes tetracycline through intermolecular hydrogen bonding between -OH/-NH₂ of tetracycline and deprotonated O^-/-NH-/CN of NMT. A calibration curve is built between the fluorescence ratio and the tetracycline concentration with a detection limit of 0.014 μmol/L. NMT is employed to detect tetracycline in milk, pork and chicken, and displays satisfactory recoveries of 94.39-105.67%, respectively. The optosmart sensor based on NMT and smartphone has been constructed for visually detecting tetracycline. This method provides routes to construct MOF-COF fluorescence probes and has good prospects in food analysis.

Nitrogen-doped Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots as an effective FRET ratio fluorometric probe for sensitive detection of Cu2+ and D-PA

In this work, a ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform was established to detect Cu²⁺ and D-PA (d-penicillamine) based on nitrogen-doped Ti₃C₂ MXene quantum dots (N-MODs) that was prepared via a simple hydrothermal method and exhibited strong fluorescent and photoluminescence performance as well as excellent stability. Since the oxidation reaction between o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and Cu²⁺ induced the formation of 2,3-diaminophenazine (ox-OPD) which not only can emerge an emission peak at 570 nm, but also inhibit the fluorescence intensity of N-MQDs at 450 nm, a ratiometric reverse fluorescence sensor via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) was designed to sensitively detect Cu²⁺, where N-MQDs acted as energy donor and ox-OPD as energy acceptor. More importantly, another considerably interesting phenomenon was that their catalytic oxidation reaction can be restrained in the presence of D-PA because of the coordination of Cu²⁺ with D-PA, further triggering the obvious changes in ratio fluorescent signal and color, thus a ratiometric fluorescent sensor of determining D-PA was proposed also in this work. After optimizing various conditions, the ratiometric sensing platform showed rather low detection limits for Cu²⁺ (3.0 nM) and D-PA (0.115 μM), coupled with excellent sensitivity and stability.

A dual-signal fluorescent colorimetric tetracyclines sensor based on multicolor carbon dots as probes and smartphone-assisted visual assay

The widespread presence of tetracyclines in the environment has raised concerns about the potential risks to ecosystems and human health. The ratiometric fluorescence sensor for detecting tetracyclines was developed using europium-doped carbon dots (Eu-CDs) as probes under alkaline conditions. The sensing mechanism of sensor for tetracyclines was considered as inner filter effect (IFE), antenna effect (AE), and self-quenching effect (SQE). The sensor had a wide linear detection range than the reported europium ions-based tetracyclines sensors. The linear detection ranges of oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), doxycycline (DC) and chlorotetracycline (CTC) were respectively 0.00-603.75 μM, 0.00-623.82 μM, 0.00-594.61 μM and 0.00-601.54 μM, and the corresponding detection limits were respectively 9.50 nM, 15.80 nM, 10.40 nM and 90.30 nM. The smartphone with RGB Color Picker was further employed to analyze the concentration of tetracyclines, which provided a new method for visual tetracyclines detection. The application of Eu-CDs test paper was also explored, and the results showed that the Eu-CDs test paper has great potential application in the visual detection of tetracyclines. In addition, the accuracy of the established tetracyclines sensor was compared with that of the China national standard method by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the results showed that the established method in this work has similar accuracy to the China national standard method. The sensor has been employed to detect tetracyclines in the actual samples with satisfactory results, which indicated that this method has promising applications in the real-time monitoring tetracyclines of food and environment.

Investigation on conformational variation and enzymatic activity of trypsin affected by Ti3C2 QDs via spectroscopic technique and molecular modeling

In this paper, Ti₃C₂ quantum dots (Ti₃C₂ QDs) were synthesized by simply treating Ti₃C₂ MXene powder with acid and base via hydrothermal method. Ti₃C₂ QDs exhibited superior fluorescence property and were used for the fluorescent imaging of living HeLa cells successfully. In order to evaluate the influence of Ti₃C₂ QDs on protease with specific biological functions, binding interaction of Ti₃C₂ QDs with trypsin was studied comprehensively and deeply through spectroscopic strategies and molecular modeling technique. The intrinsic fluorescence of trypsin was spontaneously quenched by Ti₃C₂ QDs through static quenching mode under van der Waals interaction force, and Ti₃C₂ QDs bound with the inactive residue domain of trypsin firmly with stoichiometric ratio of 1:1. Ti₃C₂ QDs induced the microenvironmental variation of the amino acid residues in trypsin, reducing the thermal stability of trypsin significantly. Gel electrophoresis experiments and microscopic imaging experiments demonstrated that Ti₃C₂ QDs inhibited the enzymatic activity of trypsin on the digestion of human serum albumin and HeLa cells obviously. These results revealed not only the deep interaction mechanism between Ti₃C₂ QDs and protease but also the influence of Ti₃C₂ QDs on the enzymatic activity of trypsin, paving the way for the safe biological application of Ti₃C₂ QDs in the diagnosis and the therapy of protease-related diseases.

Quantum Dots Compete at the Acme of MXene Family for the Optimal Catalysis

It is well known that two-dimensional (2D) MXene-derived quantum dots (MQDs) inherit the excellent physicochemical properties of the parental MXenes, as a Chinese proverb says, "Indigo blue is extracted from the indigo plant, but is bluer than the plant it comes from." Therefore, 0D QDs harvest larger surface-to-volume ratio, outstanding optical properties, and vigorous quantum confinement effect. Currently, MQDs trigger enormous research enthusiasm as an emerging star of functional materials applied to physics, chemistry, biology, energy conversion, and storage. Since the surface properties of small-sized MQDs include the type of surface functional groups, the functionalized surface directly determines their performance. As the Nobel Laureate Wolfgang Pauli says, "God made the bulk, but the surface was invented by the devil," and it is just on the basis of the abundant surface functional groups, there is lots of space to be thereof excavated from MQDs. We are witnessing such excellence and even more promising to be expected. Nowadays, MQDs have been widely applied to catalysis, whereas the related reviews are rarely reported. Herein, we provide a state-of-the-art overview of MQDs in catalysis over the past five years, ranging from the origin and development of MQDs, synthetic routes of MQDs, and functionalized MQDs to advanced characterization techniques. To explore the diversity of catalytic application and perspectives of MQDs, our review will stimulate more efforts toward the synthesis of optimal MQDs and thereof designing high-performance MQDs-based catalysts.
