Combining effects of submerged macrophytes and lanthanum-modified bentonite on sediment enzyme activity: Evidence from mesocosm study

Lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) combined with submerged macrophytes (SM) has been a conventional means of eutrophication management in lakes in recent years, and is one of the most important methods for P removal. However, trends in nutrients and sediment enzymes at the water-sediment interface during this process have not been systematically assessed, and there are still some gaps in how abiotic properties drive changes in enzyme activity. Here, we show changes in aquatic environmental conditions under the action of different ratios of modified bentonite (0, 10%, 20%, and 30%) in combination with SM (Vallisneria natans, Potamogeton lucens, and Hydrilla verticillate) and quantify their effects on sediment enzyme activities. The results showed that the nutrient cycling at the water-sediment interface was facilitated by the combined effect of SM and LMB, which effectively reduced the overlying water nutrient concentration, increased the sediment enzyme activity and enhanced the N cycling process. Partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) showed that sediment parameters strongly influenced changes in enzyme activity, with NO3-N as the main controlling factors. Our study fills in the process of changing environmental conditions in lake water under geoengineered materials combined with macrophyte measures, especially the changes in biological properties enzyme activities, which contributes to a clearer understanding of nutrient fluxes during the management of eutrophication in lakes.

Geospatial Variability of Fluorescent Dissolved Organic Matter in Urban Watersheds: Relationships with Land Cover and Wastewater Infrastructure

We investigated the fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) composition in two watersheds with variable land cover and wastewater infrastructure, including sanitary sewers and septic systems. A four-component parallel factor analysis model was constructed from 295 excitation-emission matrices recorded for stream samples to examine relationships between FDOM and geospatial parameters. The contributions of humic acid- and fulvic acid-like fluorescence components (e.g., C1, C2, C3) were fairly consistent across a 12 month period for the 27 sampling sites. In contrast, the protein-like fluorescence component (C4) and a related ratiometric wastewater indicator (C4/C3) exhibited high variability in urban tributaries, suggesting that some sites were impacted by leaking sewer infrastructure. Principal component analysis indicated that urban areas clustered with impervious surfaces and sanitary sewer density, and cross-covariance analysis identified strong positive correlations between C4, impervious surfaces, and sanitary sewer density at short lag distances. The presence of wastewater was confirmed by detection of sucralose (up to 1,660 ng L-1) and caffeine (up to 1,740 ng L-1). Our findings not only highlight the potential for C4 to serve as an indicator of nearby, compromised sanitary sewer infrastructure, but also suggest that geospatial data can be used to predict areas vulnerable to wastewater contamination.

Depth-dependent variations of physicochemical properties of sedimentary dissolved organic matter and the influence on the elimination of typical pharmaceuticals

Sedimentary dissolved organic matter (DOM) could exert a significant influence on the transformation of trace organic contaminants. However, the variations of sedimentary DOM properties with depth and their impact on trace organic contaminants biodegradation remain unclear. In this study, the qualitative changes in DOM properties with depth were assessed using spectral techniques. Specifically, within the sediment range of 0-30 cm, humic acid and fulvic acid fractions exhibited higher degrees of humification and aromatization at 10-20 cm, while hydrophilic fractions showed higher degrees of humification and aromatization at 20-30 cm. Furthermore, electrochemical methods were employed to quantitatively assess the electron transfer capacity of sedimentary DOM at different depths, which displayed consistent variation trend with humification and aromatization degree. The high degree of humification and aromatization, along with strong electron-accepting capability of DOM, significantly enhanced the biodegradation rates of tetracycline and ritonavir. To gain deeper insights into the influence of molecular composition of DOM on its properties, two-dimensional gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry analysis revealed that quinones and phenolic hydroxyl compounds govern the redox reactivity of DOM. Simulated experiment of DOM-mediated biodegradation of typical pharmaceuticals confirmed the role of quinones and phenolic hydroxyl groups in the redox reactivity of DOM.

Degree of human activity exert differentiated influence on conventional and emerging pollutants in drinking water source

Anthropogenic pollution poses a significant threat to drinking water sources worldwide. Previous studies have focused on the occurrence of pollutants in drinking water sources, but the impact of human activities on different types of pollutants in drinking water sources is still unclear. In this study, we chose the upper reaches of the Dongjiang River (URDR) as a case study to investigate the distribution characteristics of conventional pollutants, pesticides, and antibiotics along the gradient of human intervention. Our findings reveal that human activities can effect both conventional pollutants and emerging pollutants in the URDR to varying degrees. The escalation of human activities correlates with a rising trend in conventional pollutants, such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Notably, only C1 (terrestrial humus) in dissolved organic matter (DOM) exhibits this increasing pattern. Pesticide and antibiotic concentrations are highest in areas with moderate and high levels of human activity, respectively, and the degree of eutrophication of drinking water closely follows the gradient of human activity. Our results also indicate that most pesticides pose a significant risk in the URDR, particularly pyrethroid pesticides (PYRs). Out of all antibiotics, only Norfloxacin (NFX) and Penicillin G (PENG) are classified as high-risk, with NFX exhibiting significant variation across different degrees of human activity. C1 and TP were the most important factors affecting the distribution of organophosphorus (OPPs) and PYRs, respectively. In conclusion, varying degrees of human activity exert differentiated influences on conventional and emerging pollutants in drinking water sources.

Cation exchange resins enhance anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge: Roles in sequential recovery of hydrogen and methane

The recovery of renewable bioenergy from anaerobic digestion (AD) of sludge is a promising method to alleviate the energy problem. Although methane can be effectively recovered through sludge pretreatment by cation exchange resin (CER), the simultaneous enhancement of hydrogen and methane generation from AD using CER has not been extensively investigated. Herein, the effect of CER on the sequential recovery of hydrogen and methane and the corresponding mechanisms were investigated. When CER is introduced, the maximum increases for the hydrogen and methane production are 104.7 % and 35.3 %, respectively, confirming the sequential enhancement effects of CER on the hydrogen and methane production. Analyses of the variations in the main biochemical components with and without the effect of CER demonstrate that CER promotes sludge organic solubilisation, hydrolysis, and acidification in both hydrogen- and methane-production stages. Moreover, investigations of variations in the solid-liquid interfacial thermodynamics and removal rates of main multivalent metals of sludge reveal that the ion exchange reactions between the CER and sludge in the hydrogen-production stage provide the direct driving force of effective contact between bacteria and organic particulates. Additionally, the residual effect of the CER during methane production reduces the energy barrier for mass transfer and provides a driving force for this transfer. Further analyses of the microbial community structure and metagenomics indicate that CER directly drives the enrichment of hydrogen-producing bacteria (+ 15.1 %) and key genes encoding enzymes in the hydrogen-production stage. Moreover, CER indirectly induces the enrichment of methane-producing anaerobes (e.g. Methanosaeta: + 16.7 %, Methanosarcina: + 316.5 %); enhances the bioconversion of different substrates into methyl-coenzyme M; and promotes the metabolism pathway of acetoclastic process and CO2 reduction in the methane-production stage. This study can provide valuable insights for simultaneously enhancing the production of hydrogen and methane from AD through sequential recovery.
