Abstract
Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is an environmental pollutant and recognized as a human carcinogen. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a simple and sensitive detection technique for Cr(VI). Herein, it is found that Cu2+ interacts with guanosine 5'-monophosphate (GMP) to form a homogeneous Cu(II)-GMP complex (Cu2+·GMP) that efficiently displays the oxidoreductase-like catalytic activity. Cu2+·GMP can catalyze the oxidation between Cr(VI) and substrate 3,3',5,5'- tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), resulting in color change recognized by the naked eyes. Base on this, a convenient colorimetric assay for Cr(VI) detection was developed. The detection limit (3σ/s) of this sensor for Cr(VI) was 23 nM with a linear range of 0.1-25 μM. Moreover, the proposed assay was successfully applied to detect Cr(VI) in different environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries. Our method is simple, efficient, rapid and cost-effective for Cr(VI) detection without the need for complicated material preparation or special separation, which shows great potential in environmental monitoring.

Abstract
The differentiation of valence states plays a crucial role in determining the toxicity of chromium (Cr) in environmental samples. In this work, two modes of colorimetric and electrochemical analytical methods based on a fungus like porous CoS (FP CoS) nanosensor were developed for rapid, specific, and portable detection trace/ultra-trace chromium species (Cr(VI) and Cr(III)). The FP CoS exhibited peroxidase activity as a nanozyme for the colorimetric detection of Cr(VI), catalyzing the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to a blue oxidation product (oxTMB) in the presence of Cr(VI) instead of unstable H2O2 as an oxidizer at room temperature over existing methods. Based on the promotion of colorimetric reaction by increasing in Cr(VI) concentration, an effective colorimetric detection of Cr(VI) method was established with a detection limit (LOD) low to 3.93 μg L-1 and unique selectivity for Cr(VI) over 21 interfering ions (containing 15 metal ions and 6 anions). Innovatively, Cr(VI) could be reduced to Cr(III) without TMB, then selectively enriched by redox reaction with FP CoS. Hence, Cr (III) can be selectively and effectively enriched by FP CoS applying voltage, and then detected using cyclic voltammetry, with a lower LOD of 0.116 μg L-1 and high sensitivity ignoring background interferences. By integrating the dual-mode detection channel, the FP CoS nanosensor offers a convenient and flexible method for simultaneously determining Cr(VI), Cr(III), and total chromium in diverse samples.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA) is catecholamine neurotransmitters that play an important role in the central nervous system. In recent years people started to intentionally add DA to animal feed to enhance muscle development and increase their profit margin. Human consumption of the residual DA from animal tissues has been reported to be associated with the development of such diseases as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, senile dementia, and schizophrenia and pose serious human health risks. These require development of rapid, cheap, and sensitive methods for detection of DA from animal tissue. Compared to other techniques that require access to expensive instruments, skilled human power, and tiresome routine procedures, colorimetric methods provide cheap and reliable options for detection of DA. Here we report a colorimetric method based on the peroxidase-mimic activity of Fe3O4@C@AgNPs for the detection of DA. A simple wet chemical method was employed to synthesize AgNPs on hydrophilic carbon coated Fe3O4. The produced nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The detection of DA was done based on inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4@C@AgNPs using 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a substrate. In the presence of DA, however, the peroxidase-like activity started to decrease. The decrease in activity was concentration dependent showing a linear relationship in the range of 0.5-80 µM. In this linear range, the limit of detection (LOD) was computed and found to be as low as 0.12 µM. Therefore, we propose that the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4@C@AgNPs could be used for quantitative detection of DA from different samples.

Abstract
Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) as a class of highly active nanozymes with the advantages of high atom utilization, high catalytic activity and stability have attracted great attention. In this work, Fe-N-C SAzymes with exceptional oxidase (OXD)-like activity were achieved utilizing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a template. The Fe-N-C SAzymes with remarkable OXD-like activity could oxidize TMB to blue oxTMB, but 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) as a metal chelator is capable of discoloring oxTMB. Thus, the addition of 8-HQ decolorized the solution. However, upon the introduction of Cr(VI) ions, 8-HQ preferentially chelated with the Cr(VI) ions, reversing the inhibition of the color reaction and restoring the blue color. Based on this phenomenon, we constructed a novel paper-based analytical device (PAD) that exhibited a linear range of 5-1000 μM and an LOD of 1.2 μM. Importantly, the PAD used in this study shows the merits of simplicity, low preparation costs, and rapid reaction times. When combined with smartphone RGB analysis, it enables the simultaneous analysis of eight different Cr(VI) concentrations without the need for large-scale instrumentation. Moreover, the proposed PAD displays high selectivity, accuracy and utility in testing actual short-necked clam samples. This work not only provides a simple and cost-effective method to detect Cr(VI) but also makes a contribution to rapid food testing.

Abstract
A new type of polyethyleneimine-protected copper nanoclusters (PEI-CuNCs) is favorably developed by a one-pot method under mild conditions. The obtained PEI-CuNCs is characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and other techniques. It is worth noting that the proposed PEI-CuNCs demonstrate a selective response to chromium(VI) over other competitive species. Fluorescence quenching of PEI-CuNCs is determined to be chromium(VI) concentrations dependence with a low limit of detection of 8.9 nM. What is more, the as-developed PEI-CuNCs is further employed in building a detection platform for portable recognition of chromium(VI) in real samples with good accuracy. These findings may offer a distinctive strategy for the development of methods for analyzing and monitoring chromium(VI) and expand their application in real sample monitoring.

Abstract
Cysteine is one of the important amino acids that is involved in various physiological processes, food industries, pharmaceuticals, and personal care. It also serves as a biomarker for some diseases. The large use of cysteine necessitates rapid, cheap, and accurate determination of cysteine in a range of samples. Although many techniques have been employed for the detection of cysteine, they suffer from limitations that make them unsuitable for routine analysis. Here we report on a cheap colorimetric method using biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as nanozymes. The AgNPs were characterized by UV/visible spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The AgNPs exhibit peroxidase-like activity using o-phenylenediamine (OPD) as a chromogenic reagent. The low Km values observed for OPD and H2O2 (0.9133 and 61.56 mM respectively) show strong affinity of the substrates to AgNPs. The peroxidase-like activity of AgNPs, however, was inhibited on the addition of cysteine. The results show that the absorption intensity of the oxidized OPD decreased linearly with the concentration of cysteine in the range of 0.5-20 μM. The limit of detection (LOD) in this linear range was found to be as low as 90.4 nM. The recovery from urine sample (spiked with cysteine) analyses demonstrated the feasibility of the method in real sample application. From our findings, we anticipate that our method can be applied for the analysis of cysteine in various samples.
