A sensitive fluorescence nanoplatform for monitoring benzoyl peroxide in food using carbon dots coupled with glutathione capped gold nanoparticles as FRET probe

A high-fidelity dual-channel fluorescence probe for benzoyl peroxide detection and toxicity early warning in food, zebrafish, and mice

Benzoyl peroxide (BPO), as a widely used organic peroxide, has attracted widespread attention from all sectors of society for its environmental hazards and potential risks to human health. Herein, we employed a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) strategy to construct a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe CY-DCI for BPO detection in food, zebrafish, and mice. Specifically, a hemicyanine fluorophore and a dicyanoisophorone fluorophore were connected with a piperazine group as donor and acceptor, respectively, and an olefinic unsaturated bond as the reaction site. CY-DCI has favorable selectivity and an excellent detection limit as low as 58.1 nM, and the recovery rates for real-sample detection ranged from 95.8 % to 104 %, with relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 2.58 %. To further improve its practicality, silica gel plates and test strips containing CY-DCI (0-50 μM) were developed for naked-eye detection of BPO with satisfactory results. Additionally, this novel probe was then applied for ratiometric imaging of living zebrafish and mice and showed high ratiometric imaging resolution in the green and red channels, thus demonstrating its practical application for BPO detection and toxicity early warning in food and biosystems.

Ecofriendly ratiometric colorimetric determination of mercury(II) ion in environmental water samples using gallic acid-capped gold nanoparticles

Today, the monitoring and determination of heavy metal pollutants in the environment is an essential requirement for the environmental and research communities. Mercury ion is one of the most hazardous heavy metals, and scientists are trying to develop new methods for its detection. In this study, a new colorimetric sensor based on aggregation gallic acid-capped gold nanoparticles (GA-AuNPs) for the determination of mercury ions in environmental water samples was presented. The green synthesized GA-AuNPs exhibited a sharp surface plasmon resonance peak at 515 nm. The addition of mercury ions changed the surface properties of GA-AuNPs, resulting in the formation of a new peak near 670 nm due to the aggregation of GA-AuNPs, and an obvious color change from red to purple occurred. Thus, mercury ions were detected based on the change in the absorbance ratio (A670/A515). The developed sensor can determine the mercury ions in the concentration range of 78.0 nM to 8.3 µM with a detection limit of 5.5 nM. Based on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) reports, the amount of Hg2+ ions in fresh water should be between 10.0 and 30.0 nM. The results indicate that the developed sensor can detect and determine trace amounts of Hg2+ ions in environmental water samples.

A reliable and selective ratiometric sensing probe for fluorometric determination of P2O74- based on AIE of GSH@CuNCs-assisted by Al-N@CQDs

In this study, a novel composite material was developed for the ratiometric detection of pyrophosphate anion (P2O74-). This composite consisted of Al and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (Al-N@CQDs) and glutathione-capped copper nanoclusters (GSH@CuNCs). The Al-N@CQDs component, with its high reserved coordination capacity of Al3+, induced the non-luminescent behavior of GSH@CuNCs, resulting in an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. The hybrid material (Al-N@CQDs/GSH@CuNCs) exhibited dual-emission signals at 620 nm and 450 nm after integrating the two independent materials utilizing the AIE effect and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) approach. This approach represents the first utilization of this composite for ratiometric detection. Nevertheless, upon the addition of P2O74-, the AIE and FRET processes were hindered due to the higher coordination interaction of Al3+ towards P2O74- compared to the amino/carboxyl groups on Al-N@CQDs. This successful interference of the AIE and FRET processes allowed for the effective estimation of P2O74-. The response ratio (F450/F620) increased with increasing the concentration of P2O74- in the range of 0.035-160 µM, with an impressive detection limit of 0.012 µM. This innovative approach of utilizing hybrid CQDs/thiolate-capped nanoclusters as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for analytical applications introduces new possibilities in the field. The as-fabricated system was successfully applied to detect P2O74- in different real samples such as water, serum, and urine samples with acceptable results.

An intelligent smartphone-test strip detection platform for rapid and on-site sensing of benzoyl peroxide in flour samples

Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is a commonly used flour whitener, but its excessive usage can have adverse effects on human health, such as nutrient loss, vitamin deficiencies and certain diseases. In this study, a europium metal organic framework (Eu-MOF) fluorescence probe was prepared, which exhibited a strong fluorescence emission at 614 nm upon excitation at 320 nm, with a high quantum yield of 8.11%. The red fluorescence of the probe could be effectively quenched by BPO through the inner filter effect (IFE) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The detection process offered several advantages, including a wide linear range of 0-0.95 mM, a low detection limit of 66 nM and a fast fluorescence response of 2 min. Furthermore, an intelligent detection platform was designed to enhance the practical application of the detection method. This platform combined the portability and visuality of a traditional test strip with the color recognition capability of a smartphone, allowing for the visualization and quantitative detection of BPO in a convenient and user-friendly manner. The detection platform was successfully applied to the analysis of BPO in real flour samples with satisfactory recoveries (99.79%-103.94%), suggesting a promising strategy for the rapid and on-site detection of BPO in food samples.
