Influence of inorganic acid modification on Cr(VI) adsorption performance and the physicochemical properties of activated carbon

Acidified groundnut cake for enhanced bio adsorption of anionic textile dye Reactive Red 195

This study focuses on the improvement of bioremediation of textile dye Reactive Red 195 using agro-industrial waste, groundnut oil cake (GNOC) obtained after oil-pressing. The treatment of GNOC with 1 N H2SO4 had resulted in physiochemical changes on the insoluble porous adsorbent, which improved their adsorption efficiency. The dye removal efficiency increased from 55% to 94% on acidification of GNOC. The raw groundnut oil cake (RGNOC) and acid-treated groundnut oil cake (AGNOC) were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, and zeta potential. The rate and efficiency of dye adsorption were examined using adsorption kinetics and isotherm models. The results confirm that acid-treated GNOC eliminates impurities, alter the surface functional groups, and significantly increase porous surface areas of RGNOC. The investigation of key factors such as contact time, initial concentration of dye, static/agitation impact, particle size, and adsorbent dose had significantly influenced adsorption capacity of GNOC. Adsorption of dye fits best into the Langmuir model and equilibrium data of dye on AGNOC was explained by psuedo-second-order reaction with maximum adsorption capacity of 12.65 mg/g. This emphasis AGNOC has a very excellent potential to remove the textile dye Reactive Red dye from industrial effluent.

Kraft Lignin-Derived Microporous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Adsorbent for Air and Water Purification

The study presents a streamlined one-step process for producing highly porous, metal-free, N-doped activated carbon (N-AC) for CO2 capture and herbicide removal from simulated industrially polluted and real environmental systems. N-AC was prepared from kraft lignin─a carbon-rich and abundant byproduct of the pulp industry, using nitric acid as the activator and urea as the N-dopant. The reported carbonization process under a nitrogen atmosphere renders a product with a high yield of 30% even at high temperatures up to 800 °C. N-AC exhibited a substantial high N content (4-5%), the presence of aliphatic and phenolic OH groups, and a notable absence of carboxylic groups, as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Boehm's titration. Porosity analysis indicated that micropores constituted the majority of the pore structure, with 86% of pores having diameters less than 0.6 nm. According to BET adsorption analysis, the developed porous structure of N-AC boasted a substantial specific surface area of 1000 m2 g-1. N-AC proved to be a promising adsorbent for air and water purification. Specifically, N-AC exhibited a strong affinity for CO2, with an adsorption capacity of 1.4 mmol g-1 at 0.15 bar and 20 °C, and it demonstrated the highest selectivity over N2 from the simulated flue gas system (27.3 mmol g-1 for 15:85 v/v CO2/N2 at 20 °C) among all previously reported nitrogen-doped AC materials from kraft lignin. Moreover, N-AC displayed excellent reusability and efficient CO2 release, maintaining an adsorption capacity of 3.1 mmol g-1 (at 1 bar and 25 °C) over 10 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, confirming N-AC as a useful material for CO2 storage and utilization. The unique cationic nature of N-AC enhanced the adsorption of herbicides in neutral and weakly basic environments, which is relevant for real waters. It exhibited an impressive adsorption capacity for the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) at 96 ± 6 mg g-1 under pH 6 and 25 °C according to the Langmuir-Freundlich model. Notably, N-AC preserves its high adsorption capacity toward 2,4-D from simulated groundwater and runoff from tomato greenhouse, while performance in real samples from Fyris river in Uppsala, Sweden, causes a decrease of only 4-5%. Owing to the one-step process, high yield, annual abundance of kraft lignin, and use of environmentally friendly activating agents, N-AC has substantial potential for large-scale industrial applications.

Activated Carbon Modified by Ester Hydrolysis of Ethyl Acetate for Water Vapor Adsorption Enhancement

To improve water vapor adsorption, this study employed oxalic acid–ethyl acetate acidic hydrolysis to modify honeycomb activated carbon and introduce hydrophilic functional groups. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Boehm titration, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and an automatic surface area analyzer (BET) were used to characterize the microscopic morphology, surface functional groups, specific surface area, and pore size changes. The results showed that, when the concentration of oxalic acid is 0.0006 mol/cm3, the specific surface area is 179.06 m2/g. After hydrolysis with ethyl acetate, the original functional groups became more abundant, while the number of total acidic functional groups on the surface grew from 0.497 mmol/g to 1.437 mmol/g. The static water vapor adsorption experiments were conducted on modified activated carbon under constant temperature and humidity conditions. Compared with unmodified activated carbon, the activated carbon modified with 0.0006 mol/cm3 oxalic acid increased the adsorption capacity of water vapor by 15.7%. The adsorption capacity of activated carbon after being combined with 0.0006 mol/cm3 oxalic acid and ester hydrolysis modification increased by 37.1%. At the same temperature, the adsorption capacity increased with a higher relative humidity. At the same relative humidity, the adsorption capacity decreased as the temperature rose. Therefore, this modification method may provide clues for the application of enhancing the hygroscopic ability of activated carbon.

High-Efficiency Adsorption of Hexavalent Chromium from Aqueous Solution by Samanea saman Activated Carbon

Heavy metal wastewater pollution has become an environmental and industrial challenge worldwide. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is one of the most common forms of chromium metal. Hexavalent chromium pollution is a concern because it was hazardous and can accumulate in the tissues of living organisms and the environment. The adsorption method using activated carbon can be one of the methods to treat hexavalent chromium waste. This study selected Samanea saman as the activated carbon because it contains hemicellulose, lignocellulose, and lignin, which are the requirements for an excellent activated carbon. The study’s objective is to analyze Samanea saman activated carbon (SSAC) to remove hexavalent chromium, measure the adsorption capacity, and determine the appropriate type of adsorption isotherm layer based on the maximum $R^2$ and minimum ${\chi }^2$ values. The process of making activated carbon was activated using K2CO3 through a pyrolysis process and using batch adsorption. The SEM results as characterization of SSAC depicted that the high pore was well developed. The optimal conditions for Samanea saman indicated high efficiency toward hexavalent chromium ions within the following process parameters; pH value 5, adsorbent dosage 5 g, and initial concentration 20 mg/L. The findings demonstrate that SSAC leads to the removal efficiency of hexavalent chromium being 99.90%, with the greatest adsorption capacity of 0.8949 mg/g. Based on the maximum $R^2$ and minimum ${\chi }^2$ values, the most suitable adsorption isotherm model in SSAC was the Freundlich isotherm existing in the monolayer ( $R^2=0.999$ ). The experimental results demonstrated that adsorption of Cr(VI) was well performed by SSAC. Thus, the SSAC material is an appropriate adsorbent for the removal of hexavalent chromium in the water and has the potential to be industrial applied.

Reviewing variables and their implications affecting adsorption of Cr(VI) onto activated carbon: an in-depth statistical case study

Removal of Cr(VI) from the aqueous phase using numerous activated carbons (AC) has been broadly studied in the last decades. Nevertheless, the diversity of activation methods, AC properties, and adsorption conditions precludes the standardization of specific characteristics required to achieve better adsorption results. This work reviewed the pertinent literature on Cr(VI) adsorption onto AC published over the past four decades. Pearson's correlation matrix and principal component analysis (PCA) assisted in identifying the parameters and AC characteristics that have the greatest influence on the maximum adsorption capacity (q_m). Two hundred thirty-six adsorption assays were found reporting data on 110 ACs and different parameters. Of these, 39.8% of the studies contemplated the variables q_m, pH, temperature (T), surface area (S_BET), micropore volume (V_micro), and mesopore volume (V_meso), and only 19.5% reported the point of zero charge (pH_PZC). Statistical analysis disclosed that S_BET and V_micro have a strong positive correlation with q_m, while V_meso, T, and pH show little or no correlation. The difference between pH and pH_PZC (PZC_diff) indicated a significant anticorrelation with q_m, thus evidencing that lower PZC_diff values enhance adsorption. The findings are useful for all researchers that work with Cr(VI) adsorption on AC since they provide a start point concerning the required adsorbent characteristics and process conditions to be employed.

Biosorption of Cr(VI) Using Cellulose Nanocrystals Isolated from the Waterless Pulping of Waste Cotton Cloths with Supercritical CO2: Isothermal, Kinetics, and Thermodynamics Studies

In the present study, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was utilized as a waterless pulping for the isolation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from waste cotton cloths (WCCs). The isolation of CNCs from the scCO2-treated WCCs' fiber was carried out using sulphuric acid hydrolysis. The morphological and physicochemical properties analyses showed that the CNCs isolated from the WCCs had a rod-like structure, porous surface, were crystalline, and had a length of 100.03 ± 1.15 nm and a width of 7.92 ± 0.53 nm. Moreover, CNCs isolated from WCCs had a large specific surface area and a negative surface area with uniform nano-size particles. The CNCs isolated from WCCs were utilized as an adsorbent for the hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] removal from aqueous solution with varying parameters, such as treatment time, adsorbent doses, pH, and temperature. It was found that the CNCs isolated from the WCCs were a bio-sorbent for the Cr(VI) removal. The maximum Cr(VI) removal was determined to be 96.97% at pH 2, 1.5 g/L of adsorbent doses, the temperature of 60 °C, and the treatment time of 30 min. The adsorption behavior of CNCs for Cr(VI) removal was determined using isothermal, kinetics, and thermodynamics properties analyses. The findings of the present study revealed that CNCs isolated from the WCCs could be utilized as a bio-sorbent for Cr(VI) removal.

Evaluation of zinc adsorption through batch and continuous scale applying Bayesian technique for estimate parameters and select model

This work aims to study the efficiency of zinc adsorption onto granular-activated carbon, predicting the mathematical models that best describe the adsorption behavior in a fixed bed column. First, batch scale experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of pH (3 to 6), contact time (5 to 60 min), and absorbent concentration (5 to 25 g L^-1) using synthetic effluent. Fixed bed column experiments were performed by varying the adsorbent concentration (10, 13, 20, and 40 g L^-1) and the effluent flow rate (15 and 20 mL min^-1). Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Bayesian criteria information were applied to describe the phenomena using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Toth, Khan, Radke-Prausnitz, for isotherm models, and Thomas; Yoon-Nelson; Yan; Clark models for breakthrough curve. Adsorption operating best conditions were pH 5, 20 g L^-1 of solid, and 50 min of contact time. These parameters allowed 80% of Zn removal, being better described by the Tempki model. In tests on a pilot plant, the Yan model was able to predict the second-order kinetic model, with an increase in the effluent flow and a 50% increase in the bed saturation time with a greater amount of adsorbent solid.

Pretreatment of lignocellulosic waste as a precursor for synthesis of high porous activated carbon and its application for Pb (II) and Cr (VI) adsorption from aqueous solutions

Effects of Elm tree sawdust pretreatments using alkali and alkaline earth metals (NaCl, KCl, CaCl₂, MgCl₂ and Elm tree ash) and deashing solutions (water, HCl, HNO₃ and aqua regia) before the carbonization process on the porosity of produced activated carbons and Pb (II) and Cr (VI) adsorption were studied. The activated carbons were characterized by pore size distribution, surface area, FTIR, and SEM-EDX analysies. Based on the results, HCl leaching pretreatment of the biomass increased the activated carbon adsorption capacity of Cr (VI) from 114 to 190 mg g^-1. The treatment of biomass with alkali and alkali earth metal salts, especially MgCl₂, remarkably increased the activated carbon adsorption capacity of Pb (II) from 233 to 1430 mg g^-1. The results indicated that Pb (II) adsorption was attributed to both the mesoporous structure of activated carbon and the abundance of Mg on the activated carbon's surface. On the other hand, the micropores played a major role in Cr (VI) adsorption capacity. The development of the micro- or mesoporous structure of activated carbons through pretreatment of lignocellulosic precursor could be an approach for providing high performance activated carbons for Pb (II) and Cr (VI) removal from aqueous solutions.

A comparative study of acid-treated, base-treated, and Fenton-like reagent-treated biomass for Cr(VI) sequestration from aqueous solutions

A wide variety of biomass materials have been used for the removal of toxic chromium(VI) by biosorption. The current study investigated the efficacy of Macadamia nutshells treated with sodium hydroxide, nitric acid, and the Fenton-like reagent in the removal of Cr(VI). The adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, TGA, and elemental analysis. Effects of functional parameters influencing the adsorption of Cr(VI), solution pH (pH 1-11), contact time (5-250 min), concentration of adsorbent (1-10 g/L), and adsorbate concentration (10-200 mg/L) were investigated. The optimum conditions for biosorption were pH 1.4, adsorbent dose of 5 g/L, and 160 min of contact time. In all cases, the base-treated adsorbent displayed superior performance compared to others, with highest percent removal of 98%. The adsorbate-adsorbent interactions were better explained by the Freundlich isotherm and the pseudo-first-order rate model. The Macadamia-based adsorbents are potentially useful for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Three different chemical activators were investigated for the modification of Macadamia surface. The base-treated material exhibited the highest specific surface area of 12.1 m² /g. The Cr(VI) adsorption performance for the base-treated material dwarfed the other materials. Excellent Cr(VI) removal efficiency in the presence of competitors was achieved.

Magnetite Functionalized Nigella Sativa Seeds for the Uptake of Chromium(VI) and Lead(II) Ions from Synthetic Wastewater

The aim of the present study was to utilise pristine and magnetite-sucrose functionalized Nigella Sativa seeds as the adsorbents for the uptake of chromium(VI) and lead(II) ions from synthetic wastewater. Prestine Nigella Sativa seeds were labelled (PNS) and magnetite-sucrose functionalized Nigella Sativa seeds (FNS). The PNS and FNS composites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The FTIR analysis of both adsorbents revealed the presence of vibrations assigned to 1749 and 1739 cm-1 (-C=O) for ketonic group for both adsorbents. The amide (-NH) peak was observed at 1533 and 1527 cm-1 on FNS and PNS composites, respectively, whilst the carboxyl group (-COOH) were observed at 1408 cm-1 on both adsorbents. The XRD results of FNS and PNS composites showed a combination of spinel structure and$y$-Fe2O3 phase confirming the formation of iron oxide. The influence of operational conditions such as initial concentration, temperature, pH, and contact time was determined in batch adsorption system. The kinetic data of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) ions on both adsorbents was described by pseudo-first-order (PFO) model which suggested physisorption process. The sorption rate of Cr(VI) ions was quicker, it attained equilibrium in 20 min, and the rate of Pb(II) ions was slow in 90 min. Freundlich isotherm described the mechanism of Pb(II) ions adsorption on PNS and FNS composites. Langmuir best fitted the uptake of Cr(VI) ions on PNS and FNS. The results for both adsorbents showed that the removal uptake of Pb(II) ions increased when the initial concentration was increased; however, Cr(VI) uptake decreased when the initial concentration increased. The adsorption of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) ions on both adsorbents increased with temperature.
