The application of eggshells and sugarcane bagasse as potential biomaterials in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions

Influence of duck eggshell powder modifications by the calcination process or addition of iron (III) oxide-hydroxide on lead removal efficiency

Lead-contaminated wastewater causes toxicity to aquatic life and water quality for water consumption, so it is required to treat wastewater to be below the water quality standard before releasing it into the environment. Duck eggshell powder (DP), duck eggshell powder mixed iron (III) oxide-hydroxide (DPF), calcinated duck eggshell powder (CDP), and calcinated duck eggshell powder mixed iron (III) oxide-hydroxide (CDPF) were synthesized, characterized, and investigated lead removal efficiencies by batch experiments, adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and desorption experiments. CDPF demonstrated the highest specific surface area and pore volume with the smallest pore size than other materials, and they were classified as mesoporous materials. DP and DPF demonstrated semi-crystalline structures with specific calcium carbonate peaks, whereas CDP and CDPF illustrated semi-crystalline structures with specific calcium oxide peaks. In addition, the specific iron (III) oxide-hydroxide peaks were detected in only DPF and CDPF. Their surface structures were rough with irregular shapes. All materials found carbon, oxygen, and calcium, whereas iron, sodium, and chloride were only found in DPF and CDPF. All materials were detected O-H, C=O, and C-O, and DPF and CDPF were also found Fe-O from adding iron (III) oxide-hydroxide. The point of zero charges of DP, DPF, CDP, and CDPF were 4.58, 5.31, 5.96, and 6.75. They could adsorb lead by more than 98%, and CDPF illustrated the highest lead removal efficiency. DP and CDP corresponded to the Langmuir model while DPF and CDPF corresponded to the Freundlich model. All materials corresponded to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, they could be reusable for more than 5 cycles for lead adsorption of more than 73%. Therefore, CDPF was a potential material to apply for lead removal in industrial applications.

Powdered and beaded sawdust materials modified iron (III) oxide-hydroxide for adsorption of lead (II) ion and reactive blue 4 dye

The problems of lead and reactive blue 4 (RB4) dye contamination in wastewater are concerns because of their toxicities to aquatic life and water quality, so lead and RB4 dye removals are recommended to remove from wastewater before discharging. Sawdust powder (SP), sawdust powder doped iron (III) oxide-hydroxide (SPF), sawdust beads (SPB), and sawdust powder doped iron (III) oxide-hydroxide beads (SPFB) were synthesized and characterized with various techniques, and their lead or RB4 dye removal efficiencies were investigated by batch experiments, adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and desorption experiments. SPFB demonstrated higher specific surface area (11.020 m² g^-1) and smaller pore size (3.937 nm) than other materials. SP and SPF were irregular shapes with heterogeneous structures whereas SPB and SPFB had spherical shapes with coarse surfaces. Calcium (Ca) and oxygen (O) were found in all materials whereas iron (Fe) was only found in SPF and SPFB. O-H, C-H, C=C, and C-O were detected in all materials. Their lead removal efficiencies of all materials were higher than 82%, and RB4 dye removal efficiencies of SPB and SPFB were higher than 87%. Therefore, adding iron (III) oxide-hydroxide and changing material form helped to improve material efficiencies for lead or RB4 dye adsorption. SP and SPB corresponded to Langmuir model related to a physical adsorption process whereas SPF and SPFB corresponded to the Freundlich model correlated to a chemisorption process. All materials corresponded to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model relating to the chemical adsorption process. All materials could be reused more than 5 cycles with high lead removal of 63%, and SPB and SPFB also could be reused more than 5 cycles for high RB4 dye removal of 72%. Therefore, SPFB was a potential material to apply for lead or RB4 dye removal in industrial applications.

An eco-friendly removal of Cd(II) utilizing banana pseudo-fibre and Moringa bark as indigenous green adsorbent and modelling of adsorption by artificial neural network

Heavy metal-contaminated water can be effectively treated using adsorbents made from abundantly available biomass. The present investigation was carried out to adsorb Cd(II) from synthetic solution by banana pseudo-stem (BP) and Moringa oleifera stem bark (MB). Adsorption efficiencies of both adsorbents were studied in the batch reactor by conducting experiments to determine the consequences of changes of pH, adsorbent dosages, initial Cd(II) concentrations, incubation time, and temperature. The process parameters were tuned to attain the highest possible removal percentage. The characterization of the adsorbents was performed by utilizing Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) for the fresh and metal-loaded adsorbents. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was employed to calculate the amount of Cd(II) in an aqueous solution. The experimental data were entirely consistent with the pseudo-second-order model for BP and MB. The findings of the study illustrated the better adsorption efficiency of BP-derived adsorbent (≈ 99%) at optimum conditions over the MB (≈ 97%), and the corresponding adsorption capacities were 11.98 and 7.04 mg/g, respectively. The 4 (four) well-known isotherm models were attempted both in linear and non-linear forms. BP (R² =0.995) and MB (R² =0.994) were found to be best described by the Freundlich isotherm, which was selected based on the highest R² value. In thermodynamic studies, ΔH and ΔS were calculated for both the adsorbents. Cd(II) adsorption on BP and MB was endothermic, as evidenced by the positive ΔH. Finally, the prediction of the removal percentage was made by the artificial neural network (ANN) modelling. The present work developed regionally derived waste materials which are helpful for small-scale industrial units for their waste management in an economical and sustainable way.

Effects of urease-producing bacteria and eggshell on physiological characteristics and Cd accumulation of pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) plants

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination resulting from anthropogenic activity poses severe threats to food safety and human health. In this study, a pot experiment was performed to evaluate the possibility of using urease-producing bacterium UR21 and eggshell (ES) waste for improving the physiological characteristics and reducing Cd accumulation of pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) plants. UR21 has siderophore and IAA production ability. The application of UR21 and ES individually or in combination could improve the root and shoot length, and fresh and dry weight of pakchoi plants under Cd stress. In Cd + ES + UR21-treated plants, the dry weight of shoot and root were increased by 61.54% and 72.73%, respectively. The chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid content were increased by 52.19%, 42.95%, and 95.56% in Cd + ES + UR21-treated plants. Meanwhile, the H₂O₂ and MDA content were decreased while the SOD and POD activity were increased, and an increase of soluble protein level in pakchoi plants was observed under Cd + ES + UR21 treatment. Importantly, eggshell and UR21 alone or in combination induced a decline of Cd content in pakchoi plants, especially that Cd + ES + UR21 treatment decreased Cd content in shoot and root by 26.96% and 42.91%, respectively. Meanwhile, the soil urease and sucrase activities were enhanced. Generally, the combined application of ureolytic bacteria UR21 and eggshell exhibited better effects than applied them individually in terms of alleviating Cd toxicity in pakchoi plants. Our findings may give a unique perspective for an eco-friendly and sustainable strategy to remediate heavy metal-polluted soils.

Development of Eggshell-Based Orange Peel Activated Carbon Film for Synergetic Adsorption of Cadmium (II) Ion

Heavy metal contamination has spread around the world, particularly in emerging countries. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of starch/eggshell/orange peel-activated carbon-based composite films in removing cadmium (II) ions from water samples. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the composite films. The effect of Cd²⁺ was studied using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The morphology of the composite film reveals a highly porous and rough surface with more open channels and a non-uniform honeycomb, indicating that the film has a high potential to adsorb Cd²⁺. The diffraction peaks for this film were found to be at 13.74°, 17.45°, 18.4°, and 23.6°, indicating a typical crystalline A-type packing arrangement within the starch granules. The results indicate that crystalline structure was unaffected by the addition of eggshell powder and orange peel-activated carbon. In 0.5 mg L^-1 and 1.0 mg L^-1 Cd²⁺ ions, the composite film removed 100% and 99.7% of the Cd²⁺, respectively, while the maximum removal efficiency for methylene blue was 93.75%. Thus, the current study shows that starch/eggshell/orange peel activated carbon film has a high potential for commercial activated carbon as a low-cost adsorbent.

The Dynamic Behaviour of a Binary Adsorbent in a Fixed Bed Column for the Removal of Pb2+ Ions from Contaminated Water Bodies

In the search for a technically efficient and abundant adsorbent in water treatment processes, a bio-composite adsorbent derived from agricultural wastes has been identified as a potential candidate. In this study, eggshells and sugarcane bagasse were combined in varied proportions (1:0, 1:3, 1:1, 3:1 and 0:1) and applied as biosorbents in a lab-scale adsorption column. The effect of bed depth (4–12 cm) of the biosorbents was investigated which enabled the prediction of breakthrough curves for the removal of Pb (II) ions. The life span of the column was extended by increasing the bed depth of the column. The binary adsorbent of 1:3 weight ratio of <75 µm particle size showcased the highest removal efficiency of 91% at a bed depth of 12 cm. The mass transfer zone (MTZ) increased with increasing bed depth with a minor portion of the bed left unused, signifying that the process was highly efficient. The Thomas model constant, KTh, decreased with increasing bed depth with the maximum amount of Pb adsorbed being 28.27 mg/g. With the Yoon–Nelson model, KYN decreased with an increase in τ as the bed height increased. In this study, a novel approach was adopted where the proposed methodology enabled the use of a bio-composite adsorbent in heavy metal removal. The findings of this research will aid in the design and optimisation of the pilot-scale operation of environmentally friendly treatment options for metal laden effluent.

Development and Characterization of the Biodegradable Film Derived from Eggshell and Cornstarch

In the current study, cornstarch (CS) and eggshell powder (ESP) were combined using a casting technique to develop a biodegradable film that was further morphologically and physicochemically characterized using standard methods. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the morphology of the ESP/CS film, and the surface of the film was found to have a smooth structure with no cracks, a spherical and porous irregular shape, and visible phase separation, which explains their large surface area. In addition, the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis indicated that the ESP particles were made of calcium carbonate and the ESP contained carbon in the graphite form. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy indicated the presence of carbonated minerals in the ESP/CS film which shows that ESP/CS film might serve as a promising adsorbent. Due to the inductive effect of the O–C–O bond on calcium carbonate in the eggshell, it was discovered that the ESP/CS film significantly improves physical properties, moisture content, swelling power, water solubility, and water absorption compared to the control CS film. The enhancement of the physicochemical properties of the ESP/CS film was principally due to the intra and intermolecular interactions between ESP and CS molecules. As a result, this film can potentially be used as a synergistic adsorbent for various target analytes.

Full factorial design and dynamic modelling of silent and ultrasound-assisted lead and cadmium removal by porous biosorbent

Present work aimed to analyse single and competitive lead and cadmium batch adsorption, using experimental studies and mathematical modelling. The experiments were conducted in silent and ultrasound-assisted systems, in aqueous environment, using grinded hazelnut shells as porous biosorbent. The influence of process factors (pH, adsorbent concentration, adsorbent particle size, and initial species concentration in liquid phase) on species removal efficiency was evaluated when process equilibrium was attained. The statistical study, following a 2⁴ factorial experimental design, allowed the development of a model to predict variables influence. Based on the obtained results a deeper analysis of the separation efficiency, depending on process factors, was conducted. The dynamic study was performed based on experimentally obtained removal rates, modelled considering species diffusion, with reversible kinetics of sorption inside solid particles. Hence, the dynamics of removal efficiency was determined for several representative experiments. The equilibrium isotherms data, best fitted by an appropriate Langmuir model, were used in the dynamic model to reduce the number of model parameters which normally require experimental identification.

Batch and continuous adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions from aqueous solution on bi-functionalized sugarcane-based biosorbent

A new one-pot synthesis method optimized by a 2³ experimental design was developed to prepare a biosorbent, sugarcane bagasse cellulose succinate pyromellitate (SBSPy), for the removal of Cu(II) and Zn(II) from single-component aqueous solutions, in batch and continuous modes. The bi-functionalization of the biosorbent with ligands of different chemical structures increased its selectivity, improving its performance for removing pollutants from contaminated water. The succinate moiety favored Cu(II) adsorption, while the pyromellitate moiety favored Zn(II) adsorption. Sugarcane bagasse (SB) and SBSPy were characterized using several techniques. Analysis by ¹³C Multi-CP SS NMR and FTIR revealed the best order of addition of each anhydride that maximized the chemical modification of SB. The maximum adsorption capacities of SBSPy for Cu(II) and Zn(II), in batch mode, were 1.19 and 0.95 mmol g^-1, respectively. Homogeneous surface diffusion, intraparticle diffusion, and Boyd models were used to determine the steps involved in the adsorption process. Isothermal titration calorimetry was used to assess changes in enthalpy of adsorption as a function of SBSPy surface coverage. Fixed-bed column adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) was performed in three cycles, showing that SBSPy has potential to be used in water treatment. Breakthrough curves were well fitted by the Thomas and Bohart-Adams models.

Effectiveness and Characterization of Novel Mineral Clay in Cd2+ Adsorption Process: Linear and Non-Linear Isotherm Regression Analysis

The excellent adsorption properties of clay minerals make the optimization of heavy metal removal the subject of numerous research projects. In the present study, ASLAVITAL cosmetic clay (ACC) powder was applied for the removal of Cd2+ from water. The main deposit of ACC clay is the Pădurea Craiului Mountains in Romania. A wide range of morpho-structural approaches (SEM, EDX, FTIR, Raman, XRD) were used to characterize the morphology and elemental composition of the adsorbent. As expected for clay minerals, Al (Wt(%) = 11.4 ± 0.9) and Si (Wt(%) = 13.7 ± 1.4) are the main constituents of ACC. After adsorption, Wt(%) = 0.2 ± 0.01 Cd2+ was detected in the sample. As proved before, the initial metal concentration is the primary influencing factor; therefore, batch adsorption of 10–160 mg/L Cd2+ was investigated. After 190 min, an efficiency of 99% was reached, and the quantity in equilibrium increased from 1–8 mg/g. The best fit in linear form was obtained for the Langmuir II. model, where R2 = 0.954 (RL = 0.037–0.027). Based on linear isotherm models, physical bonds formed between ACC and Cd2+ during the favorable adsorption. For the non-linear fits, the Liu model proved to be the best R2 = 0.965, χ2 = 1.101. Pseudo-II-order kinetic model described the experimental data R2 = 0.988–0.999; qexp and qcalc were almost identical (the differences ranged 0.03–0.34).
