The determination of gas phase dry deposition fluxes and mass transfer coefficients (MTCs) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) using a modified water surface sampler (WSS)

Urban air PCDD/Fs: Dry deposition fluxes and mass transfer coefficients determined using a water surface sampler

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) cause significant environmental concerns. Atmospheric PCDD/Fs permeate water bodies and other ecosystems through wet and dry deposition. In an urban site, dry deposition flux samples of gaseous phase PCDD/Fs were collected by a water surface sampler (WSS) operated between June 2022 and June 2023. There is a conspicuous absence of literature on the direct measurement of dry deposition flux levels in the gaseous phase of PCDD/Fs. In the study, PCDD/Fs in the gas phase reaching the WSS dissolved in the water according to Henry's Law. The PCDD/Fs in the water were transferred to an XAD-2 resin column, sorbing the dissolved PCDD/Fs. The average monthly gas phase dry deposition flux was 34.07 ± 9.35 pg/m2-day (7.35 ± 2.16 pg I-TEQ/m2-day). The highest flux was measured in March (49.53 pg/m2-day), and the lowest was in August (18.64 pg/m2-day). These values indicated the direct flux from air to water. The atmospheric concentration of the gas-phase ranged from 68.38 to 126.88 fg/m3 (13.22-25.01 fg I-TEQ/m3). Dry deposition fluxes and concentrations of atmospheric PCDD/Fs were bigger in the colder months than in the warmer months. This was probably due to a significant increase in residential heating during the colder months, decreased photochemical reactions, and lower mixing heights. Regarding congeners in the dry deposition flux and concentration values in I-TEQ units, 2,3,7,8-TCDD compound predominated with the proportions of 31.61 ± 7.76% and 29.09 ± 12.34%, respectively. Concurrently measured dry deposition flux (Fg) and ambient air concentration (Cg) of PCDD/Fs were considered in the determination of mass transfer coefficient (MTC = Fg/Cg) calculation for each PCDD/F congener. The average MTC for targeted 17 PCDD/Fs was 0.45 ± 0.15 cm/s, and it fluctuated between 0.89 ± 0.30 cm/s for 2,3,7,8-TCDF and 0.2 ± 0.16 cm/s for OCDD.

Atmospheric concentration, spatial variations, and source identification of persistent organic pollutants in urban and semi-urban areas using passive air samplers in Bursa, Turkey

In this study, the concentration of ambient persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured for 12 months in urban and semi-urban areas using a passive air sampler. During the sampling period, a total of 14 PAH (∑₁₄PAH) concentrations measured in urban and semi-urban areas were found to be 54.4 ± 22.6 ng/m³ and 51.7 ± 34.3 ng/m³, respectively. Molecular diagnostic ratios (MDRs) were used to determine PAH sources. According to the MDR values, combustion sources were the most important PAH sources in both sampling areas. However, since the urban area is close to the industrial zone, the combustion sources occurred at high temperatures (> 800 °C), while the sources in the semi-urban area generally consisted of petrogenic fuel combustion. ∑₅₀PCB concentrations measured in the urban and semi-urban areas were found to be 522.5 ± 196.9 pg/m³ and 439.5 ± 166.6 pg/m³, respectively. Homologous group distributions were used to determine the source of PCBs. According to the homologous group distributions, tri-, tetra-, and penta-chlorinated PCBs were dominant in both sampling areas. ∑₁₀OCP concentrations measured in urban and semi-urban areas were found as 242.5 ± 104.6 pg/m³ and 275.9 ± 130.9 pg/m³, respectively. Also, α-HCH/γ-HCH and β-/(α + γ)-HCH ratios were used to determine the source of OCPs. Lindane was the predominant OCP in both sampling areas.

Multiyear levels of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs and PAHs in background air in central Europe and implications for deposition

This study presents four years ambient monitoring data of seventeen 2,3,7,8-chlorine substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), twelve dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) and sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) designed by the US EPA at a background site in central Europe during 2011-2014. The concentrations expressed as toxic equivalents (TEQs) using the WHO₂₀₀₅-scheme for PCDD/Fs (0.2 fg m^-3-61.1 fg m^-3) were higher than for dl-PCBs (0.01 fg m^-3-2.9 fg m^-3), while the opposite was found in terms of mass concentrations. ΣPAHs ranged from 0.20 ng m^-3 to 134 ng m^-3. The mass concentration profile of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs and PAHs was similar throughout the four years. PCDD/Fs and PAHs concentrations were dominated by primary sources peaking in winter, while those of dl-PCBs were controlled by secondary sources characterized by a spring-summer peak. During 2011-2014, no significant decrease in the atmospheric levels of ΣPCDD/Fs was observed. On the other hand, the concentrations of Σdl-PCBs and ΣPAHs were decreasing, with halving times of 5.7 and 2.7 years, respectively. We estimated that 422 pg m^-2 year^-1-567 pg m^-2 year^-1 TEQ PCDD/Fs and 3.48 pg m^-2 year^-1-15.8 pg m^-2 year^-1 TEQ dl-PCBs were transferred from the air to the ground surfaces via dry particulate deposition during 2011-2014.

Determination of Atmospheric PCB Level Variations in Continuously Collected Samples

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in ambient air samples (n = 48) that were collected for a 2- to 3-day period in each season (winter, spring, summer, fall) of 2013. The samples were collected on the Campus of Uludag University, which is in a semirural region. The samples were collected using a high-volume air sampler. The gas and particle phase concentrations of 87 PCB congeners (Σ87PCB) were measured in these samples. The average gas and particle phase concentrations of the Σ87PCB were calculated to be 293 ± 257 and 52 ± 56 ng/m(3), respectively. However, the results of short-term measurements showed that the variation among the measurements in the gas phase was up to 39-fold and up to 84-fold in the particle phase. These results demonstrated that the ambient air PCB concentrations were not stable and changed dramatically on a daily basis. Therefore, it was clear that a small number of samples could not be representative of the entire region. Furthermore, the obtained concentrations showed differences that depended on the meteorological conditions and long distance transportation. The sampling indicated that PCB homologues with 3 or 4 chlorines were dominant.

Spatial and temporal distribution of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in soils of an industrialized city in Turkey

Surface soil (0-5 cm) samples from 43 sampling sites covering the entire urban territory of Bursa, an industrialized city in Turkey, were collected in each season and analyzed for 83 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The mean concentration of total PCBs (Σ83 PCBs) among all sites over the four seasons was 2121.51 pg/g dry weight (dw), with a range of 207.61-5461.95 pg/g dw. Total PCB concentrations in the soil samples collected near an industrial region were the highest in all seasons. In general, PCB patterns were dominated by low-chlorinated homologue groups (≤ 5 Cl groups at a 79% level). The predominant homologue group found in Bursa city soils was the penta-CBs (29.1%) followed by the tetra-CBs (25.5%) and tri-CBs (17.6%). A total of seven dioxin-like PCB congeners (CB-77, 81, 105, 114, 118, 123, and 126) were found in every sampling location and their mean total concentration for all locations and seasons was 259.27 pg/g dw, with a range of 7.02-1581.13 pg/g dw. A significant relationship (r = 0.77, p < 0.01) was found between the concentrations of dioxin-like PCBs and the seasonal average sum of PCB concentrations. A correlation between light congeners (<penta-CB) and total organic carbon (TOC) was not observed, whereas a significant correlation (r = 0.36, p < 0.05) for heavy congeners (≥ penta-CB) and TOC was found. The pollution potential was assessed based on the values found in soils in different regions in relation to current guideline values. Overall, it was found that PCB levels in the urban soils of Bursa were much lower than both the target values and the values found in most European soils and other regions.

Atmospheric polychlorinated biphenyl (pcb) inputs to a coastal city near the Marmara Sea

Recent studies have shown that polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) levels are high in coastal sites. Various types of deposition events, including dry deposition, air-water exchange and wet deposition, were analyzed as part of the study to illustrate the pollution level. The atmospheric levels and deposition mechanisms of 82 PCBs were investigated in Mudanya, a coastal city in Turkey. A total of 175 samples and 112 blanks were collected. Air-water exchange and particle phase dry deposition fluxes were 120 ± 90 ng/m(2)-d and 125 ± 160 ng/m(2)-d, respectively. The wet-dry deposition sampler (WDDS) consisted of two reservoirs, wet and dry. Collected with the WDDS, the dry deposition flux was 21 ± 20 ng/m(2)-d, and the wet deposition fluxes (during the rainy period) were 145 ± 130 ng/m(2)-d and 195 ± 270 ng/m(2)-d for the dissolved and particulate phases, respectively. Mass transfer coefficients (MTCs), dry deposition velocities and washout ratios were calculated and compared with the literature values.

Ambient air levels and trends of polychlorinated biphenyls at four different sites

In this study, samples were collected in order to determine atmospheric levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in four different sites by using a high-volume air sampler (HVAS). Eighty-three congeners of gas and particle- phase PCBs were investigated in air samples. The total (gas + particle) concentrations for Mudanya (coastal), Butal (traffic/urban), the Uludag University Campus (semirural), and Yavuz Selim (residential) were determined as 570, 394, 412, and 316 pg/m(3), respectively. These levels coincide with the values reported for the sites having similar characteristics. In terms of homolog groups, 3-chlorinated biphenyls (3-CBs) and 4-CBs constituted at least 47% of the total PCB concentration. PCBs in all sites were determined mostly in the gas phase, with a percentage from 85 to 95%. Obtained atmospheric PCB data were correlated with meteorological parameters and a significant relationship was obtained between coastal and semirural sites (p < 0.05). With the movements of air transportation and wind rose possible data sources of PCBs were enlightened. Partitioning of gas/particle was examined with available models; significant relationships were determined for coastal and semirural sites especially.

Dry deposition study by using dry deposition plate and water surface sampler in Shalu, central Taiwan

This study presents the chemical composition of dry deposition by using dry deposition plate and water surfaces sampler during daytime and nighttime sampling periods at a near highway traffic sampling site. In addition, the characterization for mass and water soluble species of total suspended particulate (TSP), PM2.5 and PM10 were also studied at this sampling site during August 22 to October 31 of 2006 around central Taiwan. The samples collected were analyzed by using Ion Chromatography (DIONEX 100) for the ionic species analysis. Results of the particulate dry deposition fluxes are higher in the water surfaces sampler than that of the dry deposition plate. In other words, the results also indicated that water surface can absorb more ambient dry deposition inorganic pollutants than that of dry deposition plate in this study. The results obtained in this study indicated that the ionic species of Cl(-), NO3(-) and SO4(2-) occupied about average 60-70% downward flux out of total ionic species for either dry deposition plate or water surfaces sampler during August to October of 2006 at this near highway traffic sampling site.

Bulk deposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an industrial site of Turkey

Ambient air and deposition samples were collected in the period of July 2004-May 2005 in an industrial district of Bursa, Turkey and analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds. The overall average of fourteen bulk deposition fluxes for PAHs was 3300+/-5100 ng m(-2) d(-1). PAH depositions showed a seasonal variation and they were higher in winter months. This was probably due to increases in residential heating activities and decreases in atmospheric mixing layer levels. Ambient air samples, measured with a high volume air sampler, were collected from the same site. The average total concentration including gas and particulate phase was about 300+/-420 ng m(-3) and it was in the range of previously reported values. Some of the ambient air and bulk deposition samples were collected simultaneously in dry periods. Both concurrently measured values were used to calculate the dry deposition velocities whose overall average value was 0.45+/-0.35 cm s(-1).
