Assessment of urban river water pollution with urbanization in East Africa

Anthropogenic pollution plays an important part in deteriorating the water quality of rivers all over the world, especially in urban areas of Africa where water quality monitoring is still seriously constrained by the limited test facility and capability. In this study, for evaluating the impact of urbanization on the river water quality, we investigated four typical urban rivers of Tanzania through the upper-urban-down gradient assessment approach and analyzed by water quality index (WQI) and statistical methods. The physicochemical indices monitored in these rivers revealed that the contents of those indicators of TN, TP, PO₄^3-, NH₄⁺, COD_Mn, and NO₃^- were accumulated significantly in the lower reaches of the cities, which indicated the life-type pollution characteristics in such urban rivers of Africa. The following main conclusions are achieved from this study. The water quality of 30% of the investigated river sections is in the medium to good status based on the subjective WQI with sensory factors included. Moreover, the sections with obvious water quality decline are mainly limited to the river segments within the urban central area, and severe pollution of water bodies is closely related to large cities, indicating an increasing pollution tendency with the quickly growing population. Therefore, to help formulate water pollution control policies in response to the rapid urban expansion in African countries, it is necessary to adopt an economical and feasible method to carry out early monitoring of surface water quality timely.

Extended Kd distributions for freshwater environment

Many of the freshwater K_d values required for quantifying radionuclide transfer in the environment (e.g. ERICA Tool, Symbiose modelling platform) are either poorly reported in the literature or not available. To partially address this deficiency, Working Group 4 of the IAEA program MODARIA (2012-2015) has completed an update of the freshwater K_d databases and K_d distributions given in TRS 472 (IAEA, 2010). Over 2300 new values for 27 new elements were added to the dataset and 270 new K_d values were added for the 25 elements already included in TRS 472 (IAEA, 2010). For 49 chemical elements, the K_d values have been classified according to three solid-liquid exchange conditions (adsorption, desorption and field) as was previously carried out in TRS 472. Additionally, the K_d values were classified into two environmental components (suspended and deposited sediments). Each combination (radionuclide x component x condition) was associated with log-normal distributions when there was at least ten K_d values in the dataset and to a geometric mean when there was less than ten values. The enhanced K_d dataset shows that K_d values for suspended sediments are significantly higher than for deposited sediments and that the variability of K_d distributions are higher for deposited than for suspended sediments. For suspended sediments in field conditions, the variability of K_d distributions can be significantly reduced as a function of the suspended load that explains more than 50% of the variability of the K_d datasets of U, Si, Mo, Pb, S, Se, Cd, Ca, B, K, Ra and Po. The distinction between adsorption and desorption conditions is justified for deterministic calculations because the geometric means are systematically greater in desorption conditions. Conversely, this distinction is less relevant for probabilistic calculations due to systematic overlapping between the K_d distributions of these two conditions.

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis is widely distributed in British soils and waters: implications for animal and human health

In the first comprehensive geographical survey of distribution in Great Britain, Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) was detected in 115 of 1092 (10.5%) soil cores, in the range of 5 × 10(2) to 3 × 10(6) MAP cell equivalents (CE) g(-1) wet weight soil with the majority of the positive PCR reactions (n = 75; 65%) occurring around the limit of detection (500-5000 CE g(-1) wet weight soil). The distribution of MAP significantly increased from North to South and was significantly correlated with increasing cattle numbers over the same longitudinal axis. Similarly MAP occurrence significantly increased towards easterly latitudes although none of the parameters measured were associated. Comparisons of land use indicated that MAP was widely distributed in both farming and non-farming areas. Soil core samples taken from the rivers Wyre and Douglas catchments (Lancashire, UK) and river Tywi (South Wales) were negative for MAP. However, river monitoring showed a consistent presence of MAPs throughout those catchments over a 6-month period. We concluded that MAP is widely distributed within and outside the confines of the farming environment; its geographical distribution is wider than originally anticipated and; monitoring rivers describes the MAP status of catchment better than individual soil samples.

Role of riverine colloids in macronutrient and metal partitioning and transport, along an upland-lowland land-use continuum, under low-flow conditions

An assessment is made of the role of riverine colloids in macronutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon), metal and trace element partitioning and transport, for five rivers in the Ribble and Wyre catchments in north-western England, under baseflow/near-baseflow conditions. Cross-flow ultrafiltration was used to separate colloidal (<0.45 µm >1 kDa) and truly dissolved (<1 kDa) fractions from river water. Clear patterns were observed, along the upland-lowland land use continuum, in the partitioning and transport of macronutrients and metals between the colloidal, truly dissolved and acid-available particulate (>0.45 μm, suspended) fractions. Of these operationally-defined fractions measured, colloids were generally more important for both macronutrient and metal transport in the upland than in the lowland rivers. The results suggest that organic moieties in truly dissolved form from sewage effluent may have a greater capacity to chelate metals. Organic-rich colloids in the upland moorlands and metal oxide colloidal precipitates in the industrial rivers had a higher capacity for binding metals than the colloidal fractions in the urban and agricultural lowland rivers. Aggregation of these colloids may provide an important mechanism for formation of larger suspended particulates, accounting for a higher degree of metal enrichment in the acid-available particulate fractions of the upland moorland and lowland industrial rivers, than in the lowland agricultural and urban rivers. This mechanism of transfer of contaminants to larger aggregates via colloidal intermediates, known as 'colloidal pumping' may also provide a mechanism for particulate P formation and the high proportion of P being transported in the particulate fraction in the uplands. The cross-flow ultrafiltration data also allowed refinement of partition coefficients, by accounting for colloids within the solids phase and replacing the filtered (<0.45 μm) fraction with the truly dissolved (<1 kDa) concentrations. These provided a clearer description of the controls on metal and P partitioning along the upland-lowland continuum.

Manganese in the upper Severn mid-Wales

The concentrations of manganese (Mn) in the Upper River Severn (the Plynlimon catchments) are examined in relation to rainfall, cloud water, throughfall, stemflow and stream water concentrations where there is over 20 years of monitoring data available. Manganese concentrations are particularly low in rainfall and cloud water, with maximum concentrations occurring under low volumes of catch due to atmospheric "washout" of contaminants and dry deposition. There is strong Mn enrichment in throughfall and stemflow and this is probably linked to cycling through the vegetation. Manganese in the streams and groundwaters are primarily supplied from within-catchment sources. The highest concentrations occur within the tree canopy probably due to element cycling and in groundwaters due to mobilisation from the rock. Manganese concentrations in streams are at their lowest during spring and summer following long dry spells, with rapid increases following subsequent rain. There is no clear long-term trend in Mn concentration in the streams although there are increases in Mn concentrations for years when there is extensive felling of spruce plantation forest and in 1995 following a more extensive dry period. New high resolution monitoring picks up the effects of the rising limb of the hydrograph when concentrations rapidly increase, diurnal patterns during summer low-flow periods and contrasting dynamics between moorland and forested catchments.
