Effect of fertilising with pig slurry and chicken manure on GHG emissions from Mediterranean paddies

Assessing greenhouse gas emissions in Cuban agricultural soils: Implications for climate change and rice (Oryza sativa L.) production

Assessing the impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on agricultural soils is crucial for ensuring food production sustainability in the global effort to combat climate change. The present study delves to comprehensively assess GHG emissions in Cuba's agricultural soil and analyze its implications for rice production and climate change because of its rich agriculture cultivation tradition and diverse agro-ecological zones from the period of 1990-2022. In this research, based on Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach the empirical findings depicts that in short run, a positive and significant impact of 1.60 percent % in Cuba's rice production. The higher amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels improves photosynthesis, and stimulates the growth of rice plants, resulting in greater grain yields. On the other hand, rice production index raising GHG emissions from agriculture by 0.35 % in the short run. Furthermore, a significant and positive impact on rice production is found in relation to the farm machinery i.e., 3.1 %. Conversely, an adverse and significant impact of land quality was observed on rice production i.e., -5.5 %. The reliability of models was confirmed by CUSUM and CUSUM square plot. Diagnostic tests ensure the absence of serial correlation and heteroscedasticity in the models. Additionally, the forecasting results are obtained from the three machine learning models i.e. feed forward neural network (FFNN), support vector machines (SVM) and adaptive boosting technique (Adaboost). Through the % MAPE criterion, it is evident that FFNN has achieved high precision (91 %). Based on the empirical findings, the study proposed the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and incentives should be given to the farmers so that future generations inherit a world that is sustainable, and healthy.

Effect of nitrogen application on greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen uptake by plants in integrated rice-crayfish farming

Integrated rice-crayfish farming is an ecological rice farming mode. However, limited research has examined the comprehensive impacts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, nitrogen (N) uptake, and N utilization in rice under this farming modality. Herein, a dual-factor experiment was performed from 2021 to 2022 to assess the comprehensive impacts of N application and rice farming mode on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, N uptake, N utilization, and rice yield in paddy fields. Under N application, the rice-crayfish co-culture exhibits a 2.3 % decrease in global warming potential (GWP) and a 17.3 % increase in greenhouse gas intensity relative to the rice monoculture. Moreover, the N uptake of rice within the rice-crayfish co-culture is 5.2 %-10.4 % higher than that in the rice monoculture. However, owing to low rice yield under the rice-crayfish co-culture, its N partial factor productivity decreases by 5.6 %-22.6 %, while N agronomic efficiency is reduced by 18.3 %-46.9 % compared with the rice monoculture. In addition, N application significantly inhibits CH4 emissions from paddy fields in the rice-crayfish co-culture mode. Compared with no N application, the CH4 emissions and GWP of N-applied treatment are decreased by 12.1 %-31.0 % and 6.0 %-15.8 %, respectively. Hence, N regulation might reduce GHG emissions in rice-aquatic animal co-culturing agriculture. Collectively, the results of this study suggest that switching from a rice monoculture to rice-crayfish co-culture can mitigate GHG emissions and promote rice N uptake; however, continuously improving the productivity of co-culturing agriculture is key to achieving high N utilization efficiency and low environmental impact.

Co-application of biochar and organic amendments on soil greenhouse gas emissions: A meta-analysis

Biochar has been shown to reduce soil greenhouse gas (GHG) and increase nutrient retention in soil; however, the interaction between biochar and organic amendments on GHG emissions remain largely unclear. In this study, we collected 162 two-factor observations to explore how biochar and organic amendments jointly affect soil GHG emissions. Our results showed that biochar addition significantly increased soil CO2 emission by 8.62 %, but reduced CH4 and N2O emissions by 27.0 % and 23.9 %, respectively. Meanwhile, organic amendments and the co-application with biochar resulted in an increase of global warming potential based on the 100-year time horizon (GWP100) by an average of 18.3 % and 26.1 %. More importantly, the interactive effect of biochar and organic amendments on CO2 emission was antagonistic (the combined effect was weaker than the sum of their individual effects), while additive on CH4 and N2O emissions. Additionally, our results suggested that when biochar is co-applied with organic amendments, soil GHG emissions were largely influenced by soil initial total carbon, soil texture, and biochar feedstocks. Our work highlights the important interactive effects of biochar and organic amendments on soil GHG emissions, and provides new insights for promoting ecosystem sustainability as well as mitigating future climate change.

Effect of N dose, fertilisation duration and application of a nitrification inhibitor on GHG emissions from a peach orchard

Despite only occupying 5% of the worldwide arable area, fruit tree crops are of vital economic importance in many regions. Intensive cropping practices can lead to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In order to reduce these emissions, numerous studies have been made on lowering N inputs or applying nitrification inhibitors (NIs) which tend to maintain or even increase yield while reducing N leaching and nitrogenous emissions to the atmosphere. However, very few studies have been conducted on potential GHG emissions from the peach crop. In this work, a three-year study was carried out in a commercial peach orchard with a split-plot design with three replicates, in which the main factor was N dose (25, 50 and 100 kg N ha^-1 year^-1, and 50 kg N ha^-1 year^-1 applied during a shorter period of time in 2015 and 2016; and only 70 kg N ha^-1 year^-1 in 2017). Subplots in the study were used to analyse the effect of the application of a NI (3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate; DMPP). The aim was to qualitatively compare the effect of these factors on N₂O, N₂O + N₂, CH₄ and CO₂ emissions from a peach orchard soil in order to recommend agricultural practices that minimise emissions without concurrent yield reductions. We show that N₂O and N₂O + N₂ emissions were linked to fertilisation and increased with N dose. The N₂O emissions were mitigated (up to 49%) by DMPP up to the 50 kg N ha^-1 dose (not significantly). It seems that between 70 and 100 kg N ha^-1 the application of DMPP loses effectiveness. Methane oxidation increased with N dose and decreased with DMPP application; CO₂ emissions increased with DMPP and were unaffected by N dose. The intermediate N dose (50 kg N ha^-1) applied during a shorter period of time increased yield (not significantly) and NUE without increasing GHG emissions.

Three-Source Partitioning of Methane Emissions from Paddy Soil: Linkage to Methanogenic Community Structure

Identification of the carbon (C) sources of methane (CH₄) and methanogenic community structures after organic fertilization may provide a better understanding of the mechanism that regulate CH₄ emissions from paddy soils. Based on our previous field study, a pot experiment with isotopic ¹³C labelling was designed in this study. The objective was to investigate the main C sources for CH₄ emissions and the key environmental factor with the application of organic fertilizer in paddies. Results indicated that 28.6%, 64.5%, 0.4%, and 6.5% of ¹³C was respectively distributed in CO₂, the plants, soil, and CH₄ at the rice tillering stage. In total, organically fertilized paddy soil emitted 3.51 kg·CH₄ ha⁻¹ vs. 2.00 kg·CH₄ ha⁻¹ for the no fertilizer treatment. Maximum CH₄ fluxes from organically fertilized (0.46 mg·m⁻²·h⁻¹) and non-fertilized (0.16 mg·m⁻²·h⁻¹) soils occurred on day 30 (tillering stage). The total percentage of CH₄ emissions derived from rice photosynthesis C was 49%, organic fertilizer C < 0.34%, and native soil C > 51%. Therefore, the increased CH₄ emissions from paddy soil after organic fertilization were mainly derived from native soil and photosynthesis. The 16S rRNA sequencing showed Methanosarcina (64%) was the dominant methanogen in paddy soil. Organic fertilization increased the relative abundance of Methanosarcina, especially in rhizosphere. Additionally, Methanosarcina sp. 795 and Methanosarcina sp. 1H1 co-occurred with Methanobrevibacter sp. AbM23, Methanoculleus sp. 25XMc2, Methanosaeta sp. HA, and Methanobacterium sp. MB1. The increased CH₄ fluxes and labile methanogenic community structure in organically fertilized rice soil were primarily due to the increased soil C, nitrogen, potassium, phosphate, and acetate. These results highlight the contributions of native soil- and photosynthesis-derived C in paddy soil CH₄ emissions, and provide basis for more complex investigations of the pathways involved in ecosystem CH₄ processes.

Effects of different composting strategies on methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide emissions and nutrient loss during small-scale anaerobic composting

Composting is considered as one of the main sustainable methods for the treatment of livestock manure. In this study we investigated the effects of additives (urea and rice straw) on methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (N₂O), and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions using a traditional Chinese pig slurry composting method over an 81-day period, as well as examining total organic carbon and total nitrogen loss. Four common treatment strategies were examined in this study: a control (MC), urea nitrogen addition (MN), composting using rice straw cover (MS_cover), and compost mixed with rice straw (MS_mix). Our results indicate that the addition of urea resulted in the lowest total CH₄ emissions and the highest N₂O emissions. MS_cover treatment had the highest and most significant effect on CH₄ emissions, while MS_mix treatment had the lowest CO₂ emissions. Carbon lost through CH₄ and CO₂ released during the experiment was 0.1-0.9 and 2.4-3.9% of total carbon loss, respectively, and nitrogen lost through N₂O release was 11.1-17.9% of total nitrogen. In general, although MS_mix, MS_cover, and MN treatments increased global warming potential by 21.4, 41.6, and 50.9% per kg of pig slurry, respectively, no statistical differences between the four treatments were recorded. By considering carbon and nitrogen conservation, as well as the improvement of the quality of compost and the mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHGs), the small-scale composting method of pig slurry alone is an acceptable environmentally friendly strategy for use in China.

Organic fertilizer application increases the soil respiration and net ecosystem carbon dioxide absorption of paddy fields under water-saving irrigation

Quantifying carbon sequestration in paddy soil is necessary to understand the effect of agricultural practices on carbon cycles. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of organic fertilizer addition (MF) on the soil respiration and net ecosystem carbon dioxide (CO₂) absorption of paddy fields under water-saving irrigation (CI) in the Taihu Lake Region of China during the 2014 and 2015 rice-growing seasons. Compared with the traditional fertilizer and water management (FC), the joint regulation of CI and MF (CM) significantly increased the rice yields and irrigation water use efficiencies of paddy fields by 4.02~5.08 and 83.54~109.97% (p < 0.05). The effects of organic fertilizer addition on soil respiration and net ecosystem CO₂ absorption rates showed inter-annual differences. CM paddy fields showed a higher soil respiration and net CO₂ absorption rates during some periods of the rice growth stage in the first year and during most periods of the rice growth stage in the second year. These fields also had significantly higher total CO₂ emission through soil respiration (total R_soil) and total net CO₂ absorption compared with FC paddy fields (p < 0.05). The total R_soil and net ecosystem CO₂ absorption of CM paddy fields were 67.39~91.55 and 129.41~113.75 mol m^-2, which were 27.66~135.52 and 12.96~31.66% higher than those of FC paddy fields. The interaction between water and fertilizer management had significant effects on total net ecosystem CO₂ absorption. The frequent alternate wet-dry cycles of CI paddy fields increased the soil respiration and reduced the net CO₂ absorption. Organic fertilizer promoted the soil respiration of paddy soil but also increased its net CO₂ absorption and organic carbon content. Therefore, the joint regulation of water-saving irrigation and organic fertilizer is an effective measure for maintaining yield, increasing irrigation water use efficiency, mitigating CO₂ emission, and promoting paddy soil fertility.
