Microbial remediation of oil-contaminated shorelines: a review

Frequent marine oil spills have led to increasingly serious oil pollution along shorelines. Microbial remediation has become a research hotspot of intertidal oil pollution remediation because of its high efficiency, low cost, environmental friendliness, and simple operation. Many microorganisms are able to convert oil pollutants into non-toxic substances through their growth and metabolism. Microorganisms use enzymes' catalytic activities to degrade oil pollutants. However, microbial remediation efficiency is affected by the properties of the oil pollutants, microbial community, and environmental conditions. Feasible field microbial remediation technologies for oil spill pollution in the shorelines mainly include the addition of high-efficiency oil degrading bacteria (immobilized bacteria), nutrients, biosurfactants, and enzymes. Limitations to the field application of microbial remediation technology mainly include slow start-up, rapid failure, long remediation time, and uncontrolled environmental impact. Improving the environmental adaptability of microbial remediation technology and developing sustainable microbial remediation technology will be the focus of future research. The feasibility of microbial remediation techniques should also be evaluated comprehensively.

Enhanced remediation of oil-contaminated intertidal sediment by bacterial consortium of petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers

Oil pollution in intertidal zones is an important environmental issue that has serious adverse effects on coastal ecosystems. This study investigated the efficacy of a bacterial consortium constructed from petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers in the bioremediation of oil-polluted sediment. Inoculation of the constructed consortium significantly enhanced the removal of C₈-C₄₀n-alkanes (80.2 ± 2.8% removal efficiency) and aromatic compounds (34.4 ± 10.8% removal efficiency) within 10 weeks. The consortium played dual functions of petroleum degradation and biosurfactant production, greatly improving microbial growth and metabolic activities. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed that the consortium markedly increased the proportions of indigenous alkane-degrading populations (up to 3.88-times higher than that of the control treatment). Microbial community analysis demonstrated that the exogenous consortium activated the degradation functions of indigenous microflora and promoted synergistic cooperation among microorganisms. Our findings indicated that supplementation of a bacterial consortium of petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers is a promising bioremediation strategy for oil-polluted sediments.

Remediation and detoxification of oil contaminated marine intertidal sites through lipopeptide assisted washing strategy: An experimental and kinetic validation approach

This paper presents a tightly coupled experimental and kinetic approach for efficient remediation of oil spill from contaminated marine intertidal zone surface through a methodical strategy that deals with biosurfactant mediated washing strategy. The study deals with production, optimization and characterization of lipopeptide biosurfactant from Bacillus subtilis T1 and its application in remediation of oil contaminants from mimic model system of various marine intertidal zone i.e. woodland-Group1, saltmarsh-Group2, mangrove-Group3 and mudflats-Group4. Results demonstrates enhanced washing performance with oil desorption rate of 35 % in Group 4, 17.22 %, 15.6 % and 11 % in Group 3, 2 and 1 along with bio surfactant recovery rate of 41 %, 48.7 %, 51.71 % and 50.3 % respectively. Further, the washing strategy was efficient in soil detoxification with highest rate in Group 4. The kinetic validation depicts good match among experimental data and Lagergren pseudo second order data.

Bioremediation of intertidal zones polluted by heavy oil spilling using immobilized laccase-bacteria consortium

Heavy oil pollution in the intertidal zones has become a worldwide environmental problem. In this study, bioremediation on heavy oil pollutants in the intertidal zones using an immobilized laccase-bacteria consortium system was evaluated with the aid of intertidal experimental pools built in the coastal area. It is found that degradation efficiency of the immobilized laccase-bacteria consortium for heavy oil was 66.5% after 100 days remediation, with the reaction rate constant of 0.018 d^-1. Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer analysis shows that degradation efficiency of saturated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons were 79.2% and 78.7%, which were 64.9% and 65.1% higher than control. It is further seen that degradation of long-chain n-alkanes of C26-C35 and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with more than three rings were significant. Metagenomic analysis indicates that the immobilized laccase-bacterial consortium has not only increased the biodiversity of heavy oil degrading bacteria, but also accelerated the degradation of heavy oil.

Environmental and economic loss analyses of the oil discharge from shipwreck for salvage planning

In this study, we carry out environmental and economic loss analyses of the oil discharge from the shipwreck Jeh Hun. By performing 500 simulations of hypothetical oil spill cases, we obtain the minimum and worst damage cases. In the minimum damage case, there is just marine pollution without coastal pollution or aquaculture farm pollution. On the other hand, in the worst damage case, there is serious marine pollution, coastal pollution, and aquaculture pollution. The main purpose of the environmental and economic loss analyses is to support salvage planning for the shipwreck, because we have to consider the oil discharge from the shipwreck during oil removal and salvage. The results of this study show that the best salvage time is early morning in winter, when the northwest wind and maximum flood tide are dominant resulting in the spilt oil going forward into the open sea without coastal pollution and aquaculture pollution.

Adsorption properties and mechanism of sepiolite modified by anionic and cationic surfactants on oxytetracycline from aqueous solutions

In this study, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) (cationic) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) (anionic) were used to modify natural sepiolite (SEP) to obtain a type of organic sepiolite (C-S-SEP). It was further applied for adsorption of oxytetracycline (OTC), a common antibiotic in water. The changes of SEP crystal structure and physicochemical properties before and after modification were analyzed by the means of XRD, FTIR, TG, SEM/EDS, BET, XPS and zeta potential. The adsorption performance and mechanism of OTC on C-S-SEP were studied by static adsorption method. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of C-S-SEP increased significantly, and the removal rate of OTC increased from 50.26% to 99.42%. The partition coefficient of SEP and C-S-SEP was 0.356 and 2.172 mg g^-1 μM^-1, respectively. CTAB and SDBS were successfully loaded onto the surface of SEP without entering its interlaminar domain, and the original crystal structure of SEP was well maintained. In the range of the studied ratio, anionic and cationic surfactants had the synergistic solubilization effect. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. The adsorption reaction was exothermic and a process of entropy reduction. The increase of temperature was not conducive to adsorption, and the adsorption reaction was basically unaffected by the pH value. The adsorption of C-S-SEP on OTC was the result of the combination of distribution and surface adsorption. The organic modified SEP was expected to become a low-cost environmentally friendly adsorption material that can effectively remove OTC from water.
