Effects of floodgates operation on nitrogen transformation in a lake based on structural equation modeling analysis

Distribution Characteristics and Risk Assessment of 57 Pesticides in Farmland Soil and the Surrounding Water

To investigate the effect of pesticide use on surface water, the concentration and distribution characteristics of 57 pesticides and 3 degradation products were analyzed in the farmland soil and surface water in the Xingkai Lake area, including water from paddy fields, drainages and the Xingkai Lake, in Heilongjiang Province, China. Forty-three pesticides and three degradation products were detected in farmland soil. In dry field (corn and soybean field) soil, the main detected pesticides were atrazine and acetochlor with mean concentrations of 26.09 ng·g-1 and 49.08 ng·g-1, respectively. In paddy field soil, oxadiazon, mefenacet and chlorpyrifos were the main detected pesticides with mean concentrations of 14.32 ng·g-1, 78.60 ng·g-1 and 20.03 ng·g-1, respectively. In the surrounding water, including water from paddy fields, drainages and Xingkai Lake, the total concentrations of contaminants detected in the water samples ranged from 71.19 ng·L-1 to 10,145.76 ng·L-1. Of the three sampling periods, the mean concentration of contaminants in the water exhibited its peak during the vegetative period. In the analysis of the drainage water, the primary pesticides detected were atrazine, acetochlor and buprofezin with mean concentrations of 354.83 ng·L-1, 109.09 ng·L-1 and 254.56 ng·L-1, respectively. Atrazine, simetryn, buprofezin and isoprothiolane were the main pesticides detected in Xingkai Lake water, with the mean concentrations of 222.35 ng·L-1, 112.76 ng·L-1, 301.87 ng·L-1 and 138.02 ng·L-1, respectively. The concentrations of contaminants could be correlated with drainage, Da Xingkai Lake and Xiao Xingkai Lake water (ρ > 0.8) suggested that the source of these contaminants in drainage and Xingkai Lake water could be the same. The maximum potentially affected fraction (PAF) values of atrazine, chlorpyrifos and prometryn were higher than 5% in Xingkai Lake water, resulting in high ecological risks.

Long-term fertilization coupled with rhizobium inoculation promotes soybean yield and alters soil bacterial community composition

Microbial diversity is an important indicator of soil fertility and plays an indispensable role in farmland ecosystem sustainability. The short-term effects of fertilization and rhizobium inoculation on soil microbial diversity and community structure have been explored extensively; however, few studies have evaluated their long-term effects. Here, we applied quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and amplicon sequencing to characterize the effect of 10-year fertilizer and rhizobium inoculation on bacterial communities in soybean bulk and rhizosphere soils at the flowering-podding and maturity stages. Four treatments were examined: non-fertilization control (CK), phosphorus and potassium fertilization (PK), nitrogen and PK fertilization (PK + N), and PK fertilization and Bradyrhizobium japonicum 5821 (PK + R). Long-term co-application of rhizobium and PK promoted soybean nodule dry weight by 33.94% compared with PK + N, and increased soybean yield by average of 32.25%, 5.90%, and 5.00% compared with CK, PK, and PK + N, respectively. The pH of PK + R was significantly higher than that of PK and PK + N at the flowering-podding stage. The bacterial abundance at the flowering-podding stage was positively correlated with soybean yield, but not at the maturity stage. The significant different class Gemmatimonadetes, and the genera Gemmatimonas, and Ellin6067 in soil at the flowering-podding stage were negatively correlated with soybean yield. However, the bacterial community at class and genus levels at maturity had no significant effect on soybean yield. The key bacterial communities that determine soybean yield were concentrated in the flowering-podding stage, not at maturity stage. Rhizosphere effect, growth period, and treatment synergies resulted in significant differences in soil bacterial community composition. Soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), pH, and available phosphorus (AP) were the main variables affecting bacterial community structure. Overall, long-term co-application of rhizobium and fertilizer not only increased soybean yield, but also altered soil bacterial community structure through niche reconstruction and microbial interaction. Rhizobium inoculation plays key role in reducing nitrogen fertilizer application and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

Di-n-butyl phthalate stress induces changes in the core bacterial community associated with nitrogen conversion during agricultural waste composting

Nitrogen (N) loss during composting reduces the quality of compost products and causes secondary environmental pollution. Phthalate esters (PAEs) are common pollutants in agricultural wastes. However, little information is currently available on how PAEs affect N conversion during agricultural waste composting. This research systematically analyzed the impact of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) pollution on the N conversion and its related microbial community during composting. Our results indicated that DBP stress results in a shorter thermophilic phase, and then slower compost maturation during composting. Notably, DBP stress inhibited the conversion of ammonia to nitrate, but increased the release of NH₃ and N₂O leading to an increased N loss and an elevated greenhouse effect. Furthermore, DBP exposure led to a reduction of bacteria related to NH₄⁺ and NO₃^- conversion and altered the network complexity of the bacterial community involved in N conversion. It also reduced the abundance of a major nitrification gene (amoA) (P < 0.01) and increased the abundance of denitrification genes (nirK and norB) (P < 0.05). Moreover, DBP affected the overall microbial community composition at all tested concentrations. These findings provide theoretical and methodological basis for improving the quality of PAE-contaminated agricultural waste compost products and reducing secondary environmental pollution.

Long-term impacts of reservoir operation on the spatiotemporal variation in nitrogen forms in the post-Three Gorges Dam period (2004-2016)

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient limiting life, and its biochemical cycling and distribution in rivers have been markedly affected by river engineering construction and operation. Here, we comprehensively analyzed the spatiotemporal variations and driving environmental factors of N distributions based on the long-term observations (from 2004 to 2016) of seven stations in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). In the study period, several water quality indexes of the river reach improved, whereas N pollution was severe and tended to be aggravated after the TGR impoundment. The anti-seasonal reservoir operation strongly affected the variations in N forms. The total nitrogen (TN) concentration in the mainstream of the Yangtze River continuously increased, although it was still lower than that in the incoming tributaries (Wu and Jialing rivers). Further analysis showed that this increase occurred probably because of external inputs, including the upstream (76%), non-point (22%), and point source pollution inputs (2%). Additionally, different N forms showed significant seasonal variations; among them, the TN and nitrate nitrogen concentrations were the lowest in the impoundment season (October-February), and the ammonia nitrogen concentrations were the highest in the sluicing season (March-May). Redundancy analysis revealed that the water level and distance to the Three Gorges Dam were significant contributors to N forms distribution. Our findings could provide a basis for managing and predicting the water quality in the Yangtze River.

Links between microbial compositions and metabolites during aerobic composting under amoxicillin stress was evaluated by 16S rRNA sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry: Benefit for the plant growth

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between core bacteria and metabolites during aerobic composting and analyze the effects of metabolites on plant growth. The results revealed that amoxicillin might affect the generation and transformation of metabolites by reconstructs the bacterial communities. The peak area ratios (PAR) of esters and fatty acids (FAs) were increased, while sterols decreased during composting. Furthermore, the correlation analysis showed that the production of FAs, esters and sterols is strongly correlated with Oceanobacillus, Corynebacterium, Psychrobacter, Xanthomonadaceae, Pusillimonas and Gracilibacillus. Moreover, 36 key metabolites were screened out, the PAR of the propanoic acid ethyl ester and oleic acid that benefit plant growth were increased in amoxicillin groups. However, the PAR of environmental pollutants, such as n-hexadecanoic acid and 3β, 5β-Cholestan-3-ol is the opposite. Therefore, composting can eliminate the environmental risks caused by antibiotic residues in feces and promote plant growth.

Nitrous oxide emission in a laboratory anoxic-oxic process at different influent pHs: Generation pathways and the composition and function of bacterial community

This study focused on the nitrous oxide (N₂O) generation from the biological nitrogen removal process under different pH levels. To explore a pH optimum, the online N₂O emission and the bacterial composition and function in the anoxic-oxic process were investigated. The mean gaseous N₂O emission accounted for 0.329%, 0.103%, 0.085%, and 0.793% of the influent total nitrogen at pH of 5, 6, 8, and 9, respectively. Incomplete oxidation in oxic tanks was the primary source of N₂O, while N₂O in the anoxic tank was mainly generated by nitrifier denitrification. No direct correlations were observed between N₂O emission and potential nitrifiers and denitrifiers. The impacts of pH on N₂O generation were more likely related to the response of bacterial enzymes and nitrogen compounds, rather than the feedback of bacterial community structure itself. Above all, an influent pH range of 6-8 is recommended for nitrogen removal and N₂O mitigation in anoxic-oxic process.

Evaluation of nitrogen conversion pathway during composting under amoxicillin stress: Mainly driven by core microbial community

The aim of this study was to explore the effects of different concentrations of amoxicillin (AMX) on nitrogen (N) conversion and bacterial community structure during aerobic composting. The results revealed that AMX led to a lower temperature and increased pH during the thermophilic phase of composting. AMX inhibited the relative abundance (RA) of Firmicutes at the initial phase but increased the RA of Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes compared with the control treatment. The core bacterial community linked to N conversion was determined by network analysis. AMX decreased the RA of amoA, a gene related to nitrification, and increased the RAs of nirK and nosZ, which are related to denitrification. Meanwhile, AMX inhibited the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria but promoted the activity of denitrifying bacteria. Therefore, the main adverse effect of AMX on compost quality is to change the microbial community structure and affect the physical and chemical properties of composting.

NH4+-N/NO3--N ratio controlling nitrogen transformation accompanied with NO2--N accumulation in the oxic-anoxic transition zone

Although nitrogen (N) transformations have been widely studied under oxic or anoxic condition, few studies have been carried out to analyze the transformation accompanied with NO₂^--N accumulation. Particularly, the control of mixed N species in N-transformation remains unclear in an oxic-anoxic transition zone (OATZ), a unique and ubiquitous redox environment. To bridge the gap, in this study, OATZ microcosms were simulated by surface water and sediments of a shallow lake. The N-transformation processes and rates at different NH₄⁺-N/NO₃^--N ratios, and NO₂^--N accumulations in these processes were evaluated. N-transformation process exhibited a turning point. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification occurred in its early stage (first 10 days, dissolved oxygen (DO) ≥ 2 mg/L) and then denitrification dominated (after 10 days, DO < 2 mg/L), which were not greatly affected by the NH₄⁺-N/NO₃^--N ratio, on the contrary, the transformation rates of NH₄⁺-N and NO₃^--N were distinctly affected. The NH₄⁺-N transformation rates were positively correlated with the NH₄⁺-N/NO₃^--N ratio. The highest NO₃^--N transformation rate was observed at an NH₄⁺-N/NO₃^--N ratio of 1:1 with organic carbon/NO₃^--N of 3.09. The NO₂^--N accumulation, which increased with the decrease in NH₄⁺-N/NO₃^--N ratio, was also controlled by organic carbon concentration and type. The peak concentration of NO₂^--N accumulation occurred only when the NO₃^--N transformation rate was particularly low. Thus, NO₂^--N accumulation may be reduced by adjusting the control parameters related to N and organic carbon sources, which enhances the theoretical insights for N-polluted aquatic ecosystem bioremediation.

A novel method for removing heavy metals from composting system: The combination of functional bacteria and adsorbent materials

The aim of this study was to remove heavy metals from composting system using a novel method combined functional bacteria with adsorbent materials. Four types of adsorbent materials were selected in this study. Results showed that Cr had significant removal efficiency, especially in sponge treatment (19.09%) and cotton treatment (26.36%). In addition, a significant movement of heavy metals from the outside to adsorbent column was also observed. RDA results indicated that bands 1, 2, 10, 18, 19 and 20 had negative correlations with six types of heavy metals, which contributed to the removal of heavy metals. Structural equation models further confirmed functional bacteria can directly affect the removal of Cu, Cd and Cr. In addition, it can also indirectly remove Pb and Cr by changing native bacteria. In summary, this study suggested the combination of functional bacteria and adsorbent materials was effective to remove heavy metals from composting system.

Spontaneous changes in dissolved organic matter affect the bio-removal of steroid estrogens

Microbial action is the main pathway removing steroid estrogens (SEs) from both aerobic and anaerobic natural waters. The rate is influenced by other active substances present, particularly dissolved organic matter (DOM). DOM in natural surface waters has unstable components which undergo spontaneous photochemical oxidation, biological oxidation, chemical oxidation changes. How these changes influence the biosorption and bio-removal of SEs was the subject of this research. Photo oxidation-induced DOM increased the proportion of the fluorescence in area V, but biological oxidation and chemical oxidation caused fluorescence area V to decrease. All three oxidation processes can reduce the proportions of molecular weight (MW) > 5 kg·mol^-1 and increase the proportions of MW < 5 kg·mol^-1. Both the electron transfer capacity decreased monotonically with photo oxidation and chemical oxidation ageing, but biological oxidation ageing increased them. 17β-estradiol (E2) was the SEs used in the experiments. In aerobic conditions, fresh river humic acids (RHA) and aged RHA had the stronger mediating effect on the rate of E2 bio-removal under aerobic conditions. Its greater effectiveness was probably related to its binding with E2. Binding, biosorption of E2 and bio-removal of E2 were strongly positively correlated with the elemental C (R > 0.8, p ≤ 0.01) and SUVA₂₅₄ (R > 0.8, p ≤ 0.01) by correlation matrix. Besides, fresh river fulvic acids (RFA) and aged RFA had the bigger mediating effect on E2 bio-removal under anaerobic conditions, and this imply that changes in aged DOM affected by other electron transfer groups in an anaerobic water environment. In anaerobic conditions, biosorption of E2 and binding action could cluster together with SUVA₂₅₄, p(v), and 1 kg·mol^-1 < MW < 5 kg·mol^-1 by redundancy analysis, and but bio-removal of E2 could be well polymerized with EAC, EDC, p(iv), and MW > 5 kg·mol^-1.

Bacterioplankton community in response to biological filters (clam, biofilm, and macrophytes) in an integrated aquaculture wastewater bioremediation system

Integrated systems with appropriate bio-filters can be used to treat aquaculture effluents. However, the information on bio-filters that alters the ecological functions of the bacterioplankton community (BC) in biodegradation of the aquaculture effluents remains controversial. In this study, we implemented a comprehensive restoration technology combined with bio-filters [biofilm, clam (Tegillarca granosa), and macrophytes (Spartina anglica)] to investigate their influence on the stability of the BC and nutrient removal. We found that the diversity of BC was linked with biogeochemical factors in processing and upcycling nitrogen-rich effluents into high-value biomass. The BC exhibited significant distinct patterns in the bio-filter areas. Potential biomarkers for constrained harmfully algae-bacteria (Nitriliruptoraceae, Bacillales, and Rhodobacteraceae) and nutrient removal were significantly higher in the bio-filters areas. The bio-filters significantly promoted the restoration effects of N and P balance by reducing 82.34% of total nitrogen (TN) and 81.64% of total phosphorus (TP) loads at the water interface. The main mechanisms for TN and TP removal and nutrient transformation were achieved by assimilation and absorption by the emergent macrophytes (Spartina anglica). The bio-filters significantly influenced the biodegradability and resolvability of particulate organic matter through ammonification, nitrification, and denitrification of microbes, which meliorated the nutrient removal. Beside bio-filter effects, the BC was significantly controlled by abiotic factors [nitrate (NO₃^--N), dissolved oxygen (DO), total nitrogen (TN), and water temperature (WT)], and biotic factors (chlorophyll ɑ and green algae). Our study revealed that the co-existence system with bio-filters may greatly improve our understanding on the ecological functions of the BC in aquaculture systems. Overall, combined bio-filters provide an opportunity for the development of efficient and optimized aquaculture wastewater treatment technology.

Three-Dimensional Excitation and Emission Fluorescence-Based Method for Evaluation of Maillard Reaction Products in Food Waste Treatment

Hydrothermal treatment (HT) of food waste (FW) can form Maillard reaction products (MRPs), the biorefractory organic matter due to the occurrence of Maillard reaction. However, the integrating qualitative and quantitative approach to assess MRPs is scarce. The goal of this study was to develop a method to characterize and quantify MRPs created by HT of FW. MRPs were identified by molecular weight fractionation, indirect spectrometric indicators, and three-dimensional excitation-emission fluorescence (3DEEM) analysis. The 3DEEM method combined with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) and parallel factor (PARAFAC) analyses was able to differentiate clearly between MRPs and other dissolved organic compounds compared to other approaches. The volume of fluorescence Φ from FRI and maximum fluorescence intensity Fmax from PARAFAC were found to be suitable quantitative parameters for determination of MRPs in the hydrothermal FW system. These two parameters were validated with samples from hydrothermal FW under various operating temperatures and pH.
