Recent advances and prospects of neonicotinoid insecticides removal from aquatic environments using biochar: Adsorption and degradation mechanisms

In recent years, neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs), representing a new era of pest control, have increasingly replaced traditional classes such as organophosphorus compounds, carbamates, and pyrethroids due to their precise targeting and broad-spectrum efficacy. However, the high water solubility of NNIs has led to their pervasion in aquatic ecosystems, raising concerns about potential risks to non-target organisms and human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need for research on remediating NNI contamination in aquatic environments. This study demonstrates that biochar, characterized by its extensive surface area, intricate pore structure, and high degree of aromaticity holds significant promise for removing NNIs from water. The highest reported adsorption capacity of biochar for NNIs stands at 738.0 mg·g-1 with degradation efficiencies reaching up to 100.0 %. This review unveils that the interaction mechanisms between biochar and NNIs primarily involve π-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, pore filling, and hydrogen bonding. Additionally, biochar facilitates various degradation pathways including Fenton reactions, photocatalytic, persulfate oxidations, and biodegradation predominantly through radical (such as SO4-, OH, and O2-) as well as non-radical (such as 1O2 and electrons transfer) processes. This study emphasizes the dynamics of interaction between biochar surfaces and NNIs during adsorption and degradation aiming to elucidate mechanistic pathways involved as well as assess the overall efficacy of biochar in NNI removal. By comparing the identification of degradation products and degradation pathways, the necessity of advanced oxidation process is confirmed. This review highlights the significance of harnessing biochar's potential for mitigating NNI pollution through future application-oriented research and development endeavors, while simultaneously ensuring environmental integrity and promoting sustainable practices.

Occurrence and removal technologies of perchlorate in water: A systematic review and bibliometric analysis

The pollution resulting from the emergence of the contaminant perchlorate is anticipated to have a substantial effect on the water environment in the foreseeable future. Considerable research efforts have been devoted to investigating treatment technologies for addressing perchlorate contamination, garnering widespread international interest in recent decades. A systematic review was conducted utilizing the Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct databases to identify pertinent articles published from 2000 to 2024. A total of 551 articles were chosen for in-depth examination utilizing VOS viewer. Bibliometric analysis indicated that countries such as China, the United States, Chile, India, Japan, and Korea have been prominent contributors to the research on this topic. The order of ClO4- occurrence was as follows: surface water > groundwater > drinking water. Various remediation methods for perchlorate contamination, such as adsorption, ion-exchange, membrane filtration, chemical reduction, and biological reduction, have been suggested. Furthermore, the research critically evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and offered recommendations for addressing their limitations. Advanced technologies have shown the potential to achieve notably enhanced removal of perchlorate and co-contaminants from water sources. However, the low concentration of perchlorate in natural water sources and the high energy consumption related to these technologies need to be solved in order to effectively remove perchlorate from water.

Thiamethoxam adsorption by ZnCl2 modified cow manure biochar: Mechanism and quantitative prediction

The overuse of thiamethoxam (THM) has threatened the survival of living organisms and it is necessary to find an environmentally friendly material to remove THM frequently detected in water. Biochar prepared from cow manure modified with ZnCl2 (Zn-CBC) was used to remove THM. Compared to the unmodified cow manure biochar (CBC), the removal ratio of THM by Zn-CBC was enhanced 35 times. In the mechanistic analysis, SEM and BET showed that Zn-CBC had a good pore structure and its specific surface area (166.502 m2 g-1) increased to 17 times that of CBC, indicating that Zn-CBC had good pore adsorption properties. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm implied that the main mechanism was chemisorption including π-π interaction and H-bonding. Furthermore, the stable graphitized structure of Zn-CBC allowed for efficient adsorption and reusability. In addition, this study constructed an intelligent prediction model using batch experiment data, and the high R2 (0.978) and low RMSE (0.057) implied that the model could accurately and quantitatively predict the adsorption efficiency. This paper provides a novel perspective to simultaneously remove the neonicotinoid insecticides and realize the resource utilization of cow manure.

Ultrasound-Assisted Adsorption of Perchlorate Using Calcined Hydrotalcites and the Thermal Stabilization Effect of Recycled Adsorbents on Poly(vinyl chloride)

Due to their high anion exchange and memory effect, the layered double hydroxides (LHDs) have wide applications for some areas. In this work, an efficient and green recycling route for layered double hydroxide based adsorbents is proposed specifically for application as a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) heat stabilizer without requiring secondary calcination. Conventional magnesium-aluminum hydrotalcite was synthesized using the hydrothermal method followed by removal of carbonate anion (CO₃^2-) between LDH layers by calcination. The adsorption of perchlorate anion (ClO₄^-) by the memory effect of calcined LDHs with and without ultrasound assistance was compared. Using ultrasound assistance, the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents (291.89 mg/g) was increased, and the adsorption process was fitted using the kinetic Elovich rate equation (R² = 0.992) and Langmuir adsorption model (R² = 0.996). This material was characterized using XRD, FT-IR, EDS, and TGA which demonstrated that ClO₄^- was intercalated into the hydrotalcite layer successfully. The recycled adsorbents were used to augment a commercial calcium-zinc-based PVC stabilizer package applied in a epoxidized soybean oil plasticized cast sheet which is based on an emulsion type PVC homopolymer resin. Use of perchlorate intercalated LDH augmentation yielded significant improvement to static heat resistance as indicated by the degree of discoloration with a life extension of approximately 60 min. The improved stability was corroborated by evaluation of HCl gas evolved during thermal degradation using conductivity change curves and the Congo red test.

Evaluation of antimony availability in a mining context: Impact for the environment, and for mineral exploration and exploitation

This work aims to establish Sb mobility, its transfer to biota and its effect on soil health in a semi-arid climate. The results show the presence of stibnite (Sb2S3) as the main primary Sb compound, bindhemite (Pb2Sb2O6(O,OH)), and minor proportions of stibiconite (Sb3+(Sb5+)2O6(OH)) as oxidised Sb species. This research also observes very high total Sb contents in mining materials (max: 20,000 mg kg-1) and soils (400-3000 mg kg-1), with physical dispersion around mining materials restricted to 450 m. The soil-to-plant transfer is very low, (bioaccumulation factor: 0.0002-0.1520). Most Sb remains in a residual fraction (99.9%), a very low fraction is bound to Fe and Mn oxy-hydroxides or organic matter, and a negligible proportion of Sb is leachable. The higher Sb mobility rates has been found under oxidising conditions with a long contact time between solids and water. The main factors that explain the poor Sb mobility and dispersion in the mining area are the low annual rainfall rates that slow down the Sb mobilisation process and the scarce formation of oxidised Sb compounds. All these data suggest poor Sb (III) formation and a low toxicological risk in the area associated with past mining activities. The low mobility of Sb suggests advantages for future sustainable mining of such ore deposits in a semi-arid climate and is also indicative of the limitations of geochemical exploration in the search for new Sb deposits.

Enhanced removal of Cd2+ from water by AHP-pretreated biochar: Adsorption performance and mechanism

The sesame straw-derived biochar was successfully prepared via alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) pretreatment in this study. Systematic experimental characterizations, 15 relevant batch and column adsorption models, combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculation were used to investigate the performances and micro-mechanisms of Cd²⁺ adsorption onto biochar. We found AHP-pretreatment could greatly improve the adsorption performance of biochar for Cd²⁺. The maximum Cd²⁺ adsorption capacity of AHP-pretreated biochar (87.13 mg g^-1) was much larger than that of unpretreated biochar. Cd²⁺ adsorption was mainly dominated by the chemisorption of the homogeneous surface monolayer. The hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of biochar provided preferential adsorption sites, and liquid film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion were two dominant rate-controlling steps. Our results showed that ion exchange, co-precipitation, surface complexation, and Cd²⁺-π interaction were the dominant adsorption mechanisms. Especially, DFT calculations well-identified that lone-pair electrons during complexation and π electrons during coordination were provided by oxygen-containing functional groups and aromatic rings, respectively. The experimental breakthrough curves fitted better with the theoretical value of the BJP model, compared to Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and EXY models. Overall, our study provides a promising method for Cd²⁺ removal from wastewater and resource utilization of agricultural wastes.

Synergistic adsorption and degradation of diclofenac by zero-valent iron modified spent bleaching earth carbon: Mechanism and toxicity assessment

Diclofenac (DCF) is a drug compound that exists widely in water bodies, which may pose a threat to the ecological environment. In this study, spent bleaching earth (SBE) was pyrolyzed, modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and loaded with zero-valent iron (nZVI) to obtain CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI. The effects of CTAB concentration, Fe⁰ loading, CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI dosage, and initial pH value on the removal efficiency of DCF were studied. The results showed that the DCF removal efficiency could reach a maximum of 87.0% with 2.0 g/L dosage of the optimal material, which was prepared under the conditions of 30 mmol/L CTAB concentration, 25% Fe⁰ loading, and initial pH 5. It indicated that the strong adsorption of the material and the reduction effect of nZVI can achieve high-efficiency removal of DCF. Based on the detected reaction intermediate products, four possible degradation paths were inferred. The toxicity assessment of DCF and its intermediates manifested that the degradation of DCF by CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI was a process of gradual dechlorination and toxicity reduction. CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI displayed excellent DCF removal efficiency, good stability and environmental friendliness, achieving wastes treat wastes and exhibiting good prospects.

Determining the appropriate level of farmyard manure biochar application in saline soils for three selected farm tree species

Salinity is a global problem, and almost more than 20% of the total cultivated area of the world is affected by salt stress. Phytoremediation is one of the most suitable practices to combat salinity and recently biochar has showed the tremendous potential to alleviate salt-affected soils and enhance vegetation. Trees improve the soil characteristics by facilitating the leaching of salts and releasing organic acids in soil. Moreover, in the presence of trees, higher transpiration rates and lower evaporation rates are also helpful in ameliorating salt affected soils. This study was designed to check the effect of different levels of biochar on the morph-physiological characteristics of three important agroforestry tree species: Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Vachellia nilotica, and Dalbergia sissoo, in saline soils. Farmyard manure biochar was applied at the rate of 3% (w/w), 6% (w/w), and 9% (w/w) to find appropriate levels of biochar for promoting the early-stage trees growth under saline conditions. Results of the current study revealed that maximum shoot length (104.77 cm), shoot dry weight (23.72 g), leaves dry weight (28.23 g), plant diameter (12.32 mm), root length (20.89 cm), root dry weight (18.90 g), photosynthetic rate (25.33 μ moles CO₂ m^-2s^-1) and stomatal conductance (0.12 mol H₂O m^-2 s^-1) were discovered in the plants of Eucalyptus camaldulensis at the rate of 6% (w/w). All tree species showed better results for growth and physiological characteristics when biochar was applied at the rate of 6% (w/w). In comparison, a decreasing trend in growth parameters was found in the excessive amount of biochar when the application rate was increased from 6% (w/w) to 9% (w/w) for all three species. So, applying an appropriate level of biochar is important for boosting plant growth in saline soils. Among different tree species, Vachellia nilotica and Eucalyptus camaldulensis both showed very promising results to remediate salt affected soils with Vachellia nilotica showing maximum potential to absorb sodium ions.

Synergistic adsorption and advanced oxidation activated by persulfate for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride using iron-modified spent bleaching earth carbon

At present, tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) is a widely used antibiotic, and is often detected in water, posing a serious harm to human and ecological health. In this study, spent bleaching earth (SBE) was pyrolyzed to obtain spent bleaching earth carbon (SBE@C) and the nano Fe⁰/SBE@C prepared after zero-valent iron loading was adopted to remove TCH in water for the first time. The combination of nano Fe⁰/SBE@C and PS, the strong adsorption of SBE@C coupled with the oxidation of free radicals could achieve TCH efficient removal. The effects of nano Fe⁰ load, nano Fe⁰/SBE@C dosage, solution initial pH, and PS/TCH molar ratio on TCH removal efficiency in nano Fe⁰/SBE@C + PS system were studied. The results indicate that the optimal reaction conditions are 5% nano Fe⁰ load, 0.2 g/L nano Fe⁰/SBE@C dosage, initial pH of 3, PS/TCH molar ratio of 100:1. Under these conditions, TCH removal efficiency could reach 91%. Meanwhile, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to predict optimal value of reaction conditions. The removal efficiency corresponding to the predicted optimal conditions was consistent with the actual removal efficiency obtained from the experiment. Moreover, six reaction systems were tested, and TCH removal efficiency in the SBE@C + PS system was 22.6%. When nano Fe⁰ was loaded on SBE@C, TCH removal efficiency in Fe⁰/SBE@C + PS system increased to 78.2%, in which TCH was first adsorbed on the surface of nano Fe⁰/SBE@C, and then was degraded by the oxidation of SO₄^•- and •OH. Totally, the nano Fe⁰/SBE@C + PS system displayed excellent TCH removal efficiency, good stability and reusability, exhibiting a promise toward TCH removal.

Effect of Organic Amendments in Soil on Physiological and Biochemical Attributes of Vachellia nilotica and Dalbergia sissoo under Saline Stress

Vachellia nilotica (L.) P.J.H. Hurther & Mabb. and Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. are two of the most important multipurpose agroforestry tree species of the Indian sub-continent, but their growth in saline soils is greatly reduced. Recently, organic amendments have showed the potential to increase plant growth in salt-affected soils; however, the influence of using these amendments for growing the above-mentioned tree species under saline conditions is not yet quantified. Therefore, an experiment was devised to analyze the interactive effects of organic amendments in saline soils on the growth of V. nilotica and D. sissoo. Under controlled conditions, a pot experiment was conducted in sandy loam saline soils (EC = 20.5 dSm⁻¹). Organic amendments from four diverse sources: farmyard manure (FYM), poultry manure (PM), slurry (SL), and farmyard manure biochar (FYMB) were employed in this study. At the harvesting time, data regarding morphological, physiological, ionic, and biochemical parameters were obtained. The current study results indicated that both tree species reacted differently, but positively, to diverse applied amendments. The maximum increment in total above-ground biomass, total below-ground biomass, and shoot length for V. nilotica (163.8%, 116.3%, and 68.2%, respectively) was observed in FYM amended soils, while the maximum increment for D. sissoo (128%, 86%, and 107%, respectively) was observed in FYMB amended soils, as compared to control. Minimum plant growth of both species was observed in untreated soils (saline soils). Likewise, the maximum potassium ion and minimum sodium ion concentrations were present in the root and shoots of plants (both species) treated with FYMB. The use of organic amendments resulted in decreased concentrations of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide, and increased concentrations of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, POD, and CAT. Moreover, higher photosynthetic rates and stomatal conductance were observed in the plants grown in amended soils. The findings of this study can be used to include the above-mentioned high-value tree species for future afforestation programs under saline conditions.

MOF-derived biochar composites for enhanced high performance photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Biochar reinforced advanced nanocomposites are of interest to a wide circle of researchers. Herein, we describe a novel MOF-derived reinforced cow dung biochar composite, which was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method to form the MOF MIL-125(Ti) onto a nitrogen and sulfur co-doped bio-carbon (NSCDBC). The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum of NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) exhibits an extension of light absorption in the visible region (360–800 nm), indicating its higher visible light capture capacity relative to pure MIL-125(Ti). The photocatalytic activity results show that all the NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) composite samples, namely NSCM-5, NSCM-10, NSCM-20 and NSCM-30 display good performance in the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride compared to pure MIL-125(Ti). Among them, NSCM-20 exhibits the highest catalytic activity with a removal rate of 94.62%, which is attributed to the excellent adsorption ability of NSCDBC and the ability to inhibit the complexation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Photoluminescence verifies that the loading of biochar successfully enhances the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Subsequently, the active species in the photocatalytic process are identified by using electron spin resonance spin-trap techniques and free radical trapping experiments. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism for the photocatalytic process is revealed. These results confirm that NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) is a potentially low-cost, green photocatalyst for water quality improvement.

Facile one-pot magnetic modification of Enteromorpha prolifera derived biochar: Increased pore accessibility and Fe-loading enhances the removal of butachlor

In this work, Enteromorpha prolifera derived magnetic biochar (MBC) is prepared for the removal of butachlor (BTR) and characterized. The NaOH added during the magnetic loading process has an activating effect and enhancing the accessibility of the pores. Based on the BET result, the importance of pore accessibility rather than the specific surface area has been proposed. The maximum adsorption capacity of BTR for MBC is 158.5 mg/g. Then, the batch experiment shows that the adsorption of MBC to BTR fitted with the quasi-second-order kinetic model. The effect factors on the BTR removal were studied. Through the result of BET, Raman, XPS and FT-IR, the mechanism of MBC adsorption of butachlor was explored. After 3 cycles, the prepared MBC has a negligible reduction in the removal capacity of BTR, which provides a reference scheme for the large-scale application of Enteromorpha prolifera and the water treatment of BTR.

Effective adsorption of bisphenol A from aqueous solution over a novel mesoporous carbonized material based on spent bleaching earth

In this study, the novel mesoporous carbonized material (HSBE/C) was prepared from clay/carbon composite (SBE/C) treated with hydrofluoric acid (HF) for the first time, and was employed to efficiently adsorb bisphenol A (BPA) in water. Specifically, SBE/C was derived from the pyrolysis of spent bleaching earth (SBE), an industrial waste. HF removed SiO₂ from SBE/C and increased the specific surface area of HSBE/C (from 100.21 to 183.56 m²/g), greatly providing more adsorption sites for enhanced BPA adsorption capacity. The Langmuir monolayer maximum adsorption capacity of HSBE/C (103.32 mg/g) was much higher than the commercial activated carbon (AC) (42.53 mg/g). The adsorption process by HSBE/C followed well with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and also was endothermic (ΔH⁰ > 0) and spontaneous (ΔG⁰ < 0). Based on the systematic characterization and factor experiment (temperature, dosage, initial pH, co-existing ions), BPA adsorption mechanism by HSBE/C likely included the hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic interaction. Moreover, there was no secondary pollution during the total adsorption process. Extraordinary, HSBE/C manifested stability by NaOH desorption regeneration. This study provides a new sight for application of waste-based materials as the promising adsorbents in the treatment of endocrine disruptors.

Adsorption of toxic dye Eosin Y from aqueous solution by clay/carbon composite derived from spent bleaching earth

The environmentally friendly clay/carbon composite (SBE/C) was prepared by one-step pyrolysis under N₂ atmosphere at 700°C of spent bleaching earth (SBE) from the industrial waste of the refined oil industry. SBE/C was tested to remove anionic dye Eosin Y from aqueous water. The results revealed that SBE/C had larger specific surface area than SBE, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity of SBE/C (11.15 mg/g) was about 3 times than that of SBE (4.04 mg/g). The adsorption process was found to be exothermic and spontaneous. The adsorption capacity of SBE/C was independent on pH (5-12), and exhibits satisfactorily recyclable performance. Combined with characterization analysis, the adsorption mechanism likely includes electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction, halogen bonding, and π-π interaction. Overall, this exploration of SBE/C might open a window to the design of an efficient and low-cost adsorbent for Eosin Y dye elimination from wastewater. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The resource utilization of industrial waste SBE was achieved. SBE/C was synthesized and tested to adsorb Eosin Y for the first time. SBE/C had characteristics with porous structure and large surface area. pH had little effect on adsorption capacity of SBE/C for Eosin Y. SBE/C exhibited potential for dye elimination from wastewater.

Investigation into the co-pyrolysis behaviors of cow manure and coal blending by TG-MS

In this study, the co-pyrolysis characteristics of cow manure (CM) and Meihuajing bituminous coal (MHJ) blends were investigated in detail. The mass loss behavior and gas evolution characteristics of the blends were analyzed online by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS), and kinetic analysis was performed. The results demonstrate that the addition of CM to the MHJ increases the reactivity of blends, indicating that interaction between the CM and MHJ occurred during co-pyrolysis. For conventional gases, the release order of gases during CM and MHJ blend pyrolysis is H₂O, CO₂, CO, CH₄, H₂. For sulfur-containing gases, with increasing proportion of CM, the emissions of H₂S, COS, and C₄H₄S increase and that of SO₂ decrease, and the release temperature interval shifts to lower directions. The Coats & Redfern model was used, an increase of activation energy with CM addition was observed. The optimum blending ratio based on the lowest activation energy is CM:MHJ = 1:3 and the activation energy is 41.9 kJ/mol.
