Evaluating BTEX in vehicle exhaust gas: A fast and efficient approach using SPME and GC-BID

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and the xylene isomers (m, p, and o-xylene) (BTEX) are known for their harmful effects on human health and have been extensively studied across various environmental matrices. However, quantifying BTEX in exhaust gases poses challenges due to the complexity of the matrices. In this study, we investigated a method development strategy involving solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography coupled with a dielectric barrier discharge ionization Detector (BID) for quantifying BTEX emitted from internal combustion engines operating at idle. Sampling was conducted using 1.0 L Tedlar bags, followed by withdrawal of aliquots and dilution with atmospheric air using a novel device (graduated vial) designed for gaseous samples. The SPME-GC-BID method was developed and validated for the conditions: BTEX extraction in CAR/PDMS 75 μm fiber at a contact time of 5.0 min at a temperature of 27 °C, followed by GC-BID analysis. Method validation to ensure the reliability of quantitative results used the merit figures e.g., limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ), precision, and accuracy (recovery). LOD varied from 0.194 to 0.340 mg m-3, LOQ varied from 0.587 to 1.03 mg m-3, precision ranged from 1.47 to 7.14 %, and recovery varied from 82.34 to 109.5 %. BTEX concentration in vehicle exhaust varied from 3.40 to 16.4 mg m-3. The results showed, concerning the figures of merit analyzed, that the SPME-GC-BID method provides good sensibility, precision, and accuracy for evaluating the presence of BTEX in the exhaust of internal combustion engines, contributing to the understanding of health risks associated with vehicle emissions.

Development of a bacterial consortium from Variovorax paradoxus and Pseudomonas veronii isolates applicable in the removal of BTEX

In this study, we report on the development of a novel bacterial consortium, consisting of Variovorax paradoxus and Pseudomonas veronii isolates, applicable in the biodegradation of all six BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-, m- and p-xylene) and the bioremediation of contaminated sites. The co-cultivability of the selected bacterial isolates was determined in nutrient-rich medium, as well as in BTEX amended mineral salts solution using Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) and CFU determinations. BTEX biodegradation capacity of the two-strain consortium was assessed in mineral salts solution, where a series of BTEX depletions and supplementations occurred, as well as in a real, BTEX polluted environmental sample (contaminated groundwater) in the presence of the autochthonous bacterial community. The obtained results indicated that the developed bacterial consortium is very efficient in BTEX biodegradation. Under laboratory conditions, the acclimatized bacterial consortium completely degraded the BTEX mixture with a concentration as high as 20 mg l^-1 in a mineral salt medium within a short span of 6 h. Close to in situ groundwater conditions (incubated at 15 °C under static conditions in the absence of light), groundwater microcosms containing the autochthonous bacterial community inoculated with the developed bacterial consortium showed more efficient toluene, o-, m-and p-xylene biodegradation capacity than microcosms containing solely the native microbial population originally found in the groundwater. In the inoculated microcosms, after 115 h of incubation the concentration (~ 1.7 mg l^-1 each) of o-, m- and p-xylene decreased to zero, whereas in the non-inoculated microcosms the concentration of xylene isomers was still 0.2, 0.3 and 0.3 mg l^-1, respectively. The allochthonous bioaugmentation of the contaminated groundwater with the obtained inoculant was successful and manifested in a better BTEX degradation rate. Our results suggest that the obtained bacterial consortium can be a new, stable and efficient bioremediation agent applicable in the synergistic elimination of BTEX compounds from contaminated sites.

Impact of OA on the Temperature Dependence of PM 2.5 in the Los Angeles Basin

Air quality policy in the Los Angeles megacity is a guidepost for other megacities. Over the last 2 decades, the policy has substantially reduced aerosol (OA) concentrations and the frequency of high aerosol events in the region. During this time, the emissions contributing to, and the temperature associated with, high aerosol events have changed. Early in the record, aerosol concentrations responded to a variety of different sources. We show that emission control has been effective with a strong decrease in temperature-independent sources. As a result, the response of aerosol to temperature has become a dominant feature of high aerosol events in the basin. The organic fraction of the aerosol (OA) increases with the temperature approaching 35% at 40 °C. We describe a simple conceptual model of aerosol in Los Angeles, illustrating how benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) and isoprene, along with molecules for which these are plausible surrogates such as monoterpenes, are sufficient to explain the observed temperature dependence of PM 2.5.
