Effects of biochar on the ecological performance of a subtropical landfill

Technological and economic analysis of electrokinetic remediation of contaminated soil: A global perspective and its application in Indian scenario

Globally million hectares of land annually is getting contaminated by heavy metalloids like As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, and Se, with current concentrations in soil above geo-baseline or regulatory standards. The heavy metals are highly toxic, mobile, and persistent and hence require immediate and effective mitigation. There are many available remediation techniques like surface capping, encapsulation, landfilling, soil flushing, soil washing, electrokinetic extraction, stabilization, solidification, vitrification, phytoremediation, and bioremediation which have been evolved to clean up heavy metal-contaminated sites. Nevertheless, all of the technologies have some applicability and limitations making the soil remediation initiative unsustainable. Among the available technologies, electrokinetic remediation (EKR) has been comparatively recognized to mitigate contaminated sites via both in-situ and ex-situ approaches due to its efficiency, suitability for use in low permeability soil, and requirement of low potential gradient. The work critically analyzes the EKR concerning techno, economic, and sustainability aspect for evaluating its application on various substrates and environmental conditions. The current soil contamination status in India is presented and the application of EKR for the heavy metal remediation from soil has been evaluated. The present work summaries a comprehensive and exhaustive review on EKR technology proving its effectiveness for a country like India where the huge amount of waste generated could not be treated due to lack of infrastructure, technology, and economic constraints.

Coupled effects of elevated CO2 and biochar on microbial communities of vegetated soil

Soil microbial communities are important for plant growth and establishing healthy ecosystems. Although biochar is widely adopted as a sustainable fertilizer, its influence on soil ecological functions is still unclear, especially under climate change such as elevated carbon dioxide concentration (eCO₂). This study explores the coupled effects between eCO₂ and biochar on microbial communities in soil planted with tree seedlings of Schefflera heptaphylla. Root characteristics and soil microbial communities were examined and interpreted with statistical analysis. Results show that biochar application at ambient carbon dioxide concentration (aCO₂) always improves plant growth, which is further promoted under eCO₂. Similarly, β-glucosidase, urease and phosphatase activities are enhanced by biochar at aCO₂ (p < 0.05). In contrast, only urease activity increases with biochar added at eCO₂ (p < 0.05). The beneficial effects of biochar on soil enzyme activities become less significant at eCO₂. Depending on biochar type, biochar can increase bacterial diversity and fungal richness at aCO₂. However, at eCO₂, biochar does not significantly affect microbial richness (p > 0.05) while microbial diversity is reduced by peanut shell biochar (p < 0.05). Owing to better plant growth under biochar application and eCO₂, plants are likely to become more dominant in specializing the microbial communities that are favourable to them. In such community, the abundance of Proteobacteria is the greatest and increases after biochar addition at eCO₂. The most abundant fungus also shifts from Rozellomycota to Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. These microbes can improve soil fertility. Even though the microbial diversity is reduced, using biochar at eCO₂ can further promote plant growth, which in turn enhances carbon sequestration. Thus, biochar application can be an effective strategy to facilitate ecological restoration under climate change and relieve the problem of eCO_2.

Maize Yield Response, Root Distribution and Soil Desiccation Crack Features as Affected by Row Spacing

Plant density is among the most critical factors affecting plant yields and resource use efficiency since it drives the exploitation of the available resources per unit area, root distribution and soil water losses by direct evaporation from the soil. Consequently, in fine-textured soils, it can also affect the formation and development of desiccation cracks. The aim of this study, carried out on a sandy clay loam soil in a typical Mediterranean environment, was to investigate the effects of different row spacings of maize (Zea mais L.) on yield response, root distribution and the main features of desiccation cracks. The field experiment compared bare soil and soil cropped with maize using three plant densities (6, 4 and 3 plants m^-2), obtained by keeping the number of plants in a row constant and varying the distance between the rows (0.5-0.75-1.0 m). The highest kernel yield (16.57 Mg ha^-1) was obtained with the greatest planting density (6 plants m^-2) with a row spacing of 0.5 m; significantly lower yields were recorded with spacings of 0.75 and 1 m, with a decrease of 8.09% and 18.24%, respectively. At the end of the growing season, soil moisture in the bare soil was on average 4% greater in comparison to the cropped soil and was also affected by row spacing, decreasing with the decrease in the inter-row distance. An inverse behaviour was observed between soil moisture and both root density and desiccation crack size. Root density decreased to the increase in soil depth and to the increase in distance from the row. The pluviometric regime occurred during the growing season (total rainfall of 343 mm)-resulted in the formation of cracks of reduced size and with an isotropic behaviour in the bare soil, whereas in the cultivated soil, the cracks were parallel to the maize rows and increased in size with decreasing inter-row distance. The total volume of the soil cracks reached a value of 135.65 m³ ha^-1 in the soil cropped with a row distance of 0.5 m, and was about ten times greater in comparison to the bare soil and three times greater in comparison to a row spacing of 1 m. Such a volume would allow a recharge of 14 mm in the case of intense rainy events on soil characterised by low permeability.

Overview of the use of biochar from main cereals to stimulate plant growth

The total global food demand is expected to increase up to 50% between 2010 and 2050; hence, there is a clear need to increase plant productivity with little or no damage to the environment. In this respect, biochar is a carbon-rich material derived from the pyrolysis of organic matter at high temperatures with a limited oxygen supply, with different physicochemical characteristics that depend on the feedstock and pyrolysis conditions. When used as a soil amendment, it has shown many positive environmental effects such as carbon sequestration, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and soil improvement. Biochar application has also shown huge benefits when applied to agri-systems, among them, the improvement of plant growth either in optimal conditions or under abiotic or biotic stress. Several mechanisms, such as enhancing the soil microbial diversity and thus increasing soil nutrient-cycling functions, improving soil physicochemical properties, stimulating the microbial colonization, or increasing soil P, K, or N content, have been described to exert these positive effects on plant growth, either alone or in combination with other resources. In addition, it can also improve the plant antioxidant defenses, an evident advantage for plant growth under stress conditions. Although agricultural residues are generated from a wide variety of crops, cereals account for more than half of the world's harvested area. Yet, in this review, we will focus on biochar obtained from residues of the most common and relevant cereal crops in terms of global production (rice, wheat, maize, and barley) and in their use as recycled residues to stimulate plant growth. The harvesting and processing of these crops generate a vast number and variety of residues that could be locally recycled into valuable products such as biochar, reducing the waste management problem and accomplishing the circular economy premise. However, very scarce literature focused on the use of biochar from a crop to improve its own growth is available. Herein, we present an overview of the literature focused on this topic, compiling most of the studies and discussing the urgent need to deepen into the molecular mechanisms and pathways involved in the beneficial effects of biochar on plant productivity.

Methane Emission Reduction and Biological Characteristics of Landfill Cover Soil Amended With Hydrophobic Biochar

Biochar-amended landfill cover soil (BLCS) can promote CH₄ and O₂ diffusion, but it increases rainwater entry in the rainy season, which is not conducive to CH₄ emission reduction. Hydrophobic biochar–amended landfill cover soil (HLCS) was prepared to investigate the changes in CH₄ emission reduction and biological characteristics, and BLCS was prepared as control. Results showed that rainwater retention time in HLCS was reduced by half. HLCS had a higher CH₄ reduction potential, achieving 100% CH₄ removal at 25% CH₄ content of landfill gas, and its main contributors to CH₄ reduction were found to be at depths of 10–30 cm (upper layer) and 50–60 cm (lower layer). The relative abundances of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) in the upper and lower layers of HLCS were 55.93% and 46.93%, respectively, higher than those of BLCS (50.80% and 31.40%, respectively). Hydrophobic biochar amended to the landfill cover soil can realize waterproofing, ventilation, MOB growth promotion, and efficient CH₄ reduction.

Bacterial dynamics and functions driven by bulking agents to mitigate gaseous emissions in kitchen waste composting

This study investigated the impacts of different bulking agents (i.e. garden waste, cornstalks, and spent mushroom substrates) on bacterial structure and functions for gaseous emissions during kitchen waste composting. High-throughput sequencing was integrated with functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) to decipher the bacterial structure and functions. Results show that adding cornstalks constructed a more complex and mutualistic bacterial network to enhance organic biodegradation. This scenario, however, aggravated the emission of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide with the enrichment of the genus Bacillus and Desulfitibacter at the thermophilic stage of composting to facilitate ammonification and sulphur-related respiration, respectively. By contrast, spent mushroom substrates facilitated the proliferation of the genus Pseudomonas to promote nitrate reduction at the cooling stage, leading to considerable emission of nitrous oxide. Compared to these two agents, garden waste contained less easily biodegradable substances to limit bacterial mutualism, thereby reducing gaseous emissions in composting.

Application of olive mill waste-based biochars in agriculture: Impact on soil properties, enzymatic activities and tomato growth

The olive oil industry is an important economic sector in Mediterranean countries. However, oil production is unfortunately accompanied by the generation of huge amounts of olive mill solid wastes (OMSW) and olive mill wastewater (OMWW). In the present study, a strategy is proposed for converting these olive mill wastes into biochar through pyrolysis, for their later use as an organic amendment in agriculture. Specifically, two biochars were prepared from the pyrolysis of OMSW at 500 °C, either alone or impregnated with OMWW (OMSW-B and I-OMSW-B). The characterization of the OMSW and I-OMSW samples and their derived biochars showed that the fixed carbon and ash contents in the feedstocks increased by 38% and 11% respectively for OMSW-B, and by 37% and 12% respectively for I-OMSW-B. Interestingly, the impregnation process significantly increased Na, P, K, Ca and Fe contents in the produced biochars. The effect of OMSW-B and I-OMSW-B amendments at different application dose (1%, 2.5% and 5% wt/wt) on the enzymatic activity of an agricultural soil was performed at laboratory scale with a pot test. The experimental results showed that phosphatase and urease activity increased with biochar application rate; amendment with I-OMSW-B at 1%, 2.5% and 5% enhanced the phosphatase activity by 63%, 142% and 285% and urease activity by 50%, 116% and 149%, respectively. On the other hand, dehydrogenase and protease activities were higher for the application rate of 2.5% biochar. Biochar amendment promoted tomatoes seedling growth after 10 weeks, which was highest in the application rates of 2.5% and 5% for both OMSW-B and I-OSMW-B. Thus, the produced biochars had great potential to be used as biofertilizers in agriculture.

Halosulfuron methyl did not have a significant effect on diversity and community of sugarcane rhizosphere microflora

Halosulfuron methyl (HM) is a new, highly active sulfonylurea herbicide that has been widely used for weed control in agricultural production. However, its potential ecological risks remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of different concentrations of HM on bacterial communities in sugarcane rhizospheric soil by using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. The half-life of HM for 130 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg, and 1300 mg/kg spraying concentrations were 6.64, 9.19, and 9.87 d, respectively. HM application did not alter the alpha or beta diversity of the soil bacterial community, whereas some microbial populations and the main microbial functional groups were significantly altered by HM exposure. The phylum Cyanobacteria and genus unclassified Chloroflexi group KD4-96 were found to be positively correlated with HM concentration in soils, indicating that they are highly involved in the biodegradation of HM in soils. Relationship analysis between soil properties and microbial communities showed that total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentration were two key factors that significantly influenced microbial community structure. To our best knowledge, this is the first microbial ecotoxicological assessment of HM in agricultural soil.

Soil desiccation cracking and its characterization in vegetated soil: A perspective review

The formation and propagation of surface desiccation cracks in vegetated infrastructures involve coupled factors including unsaturated soil mechanics, atmospheric conditions and vegetation parameters. Vegetation induces a "Love-hate" relationship in the development of desiccation cracks due to plant induced suction as well as root reinforcement. The objective of the paper is to provide a state-of-the-art that comprehensively reviews the desiccation process in context of the soil-water-plant interaction together. At first, basic theories of crack initiation and propagation in literature are discussed in the context of unsaturated soil mechanics. Thereafter, influence of vegetation on soil cracking is discussed systematically based on transpiration induced suction, root reinforcement, plantation strategy, root exudate and basic plant traits. Intrusive and non-intrusive measurement approaches of desiccation cracks including lab and field studies are put forward. Various schools of desiccation models have been briefly touched upon. More than 150 studies on desiccation cracks have been tabulated in this review, considering soil types, vegetation cover, drying-wetting cycles, approaches of characterizing cracks, sample size, crack pattern, hydraulic conductivity and water retention. Future scopes involving measurement considerations, usage of geotechnical centrifuge modelling, bio-amendments and plant effects on desiccation cracking have been put forward.

Joint response of chemistry and functional microbial community to oxygenation of the reductive confined aquifer

Oxygen can enter into reductive aquifer through natural and artificial processes. However, the joint response of groundwater chemistry and functional microbial communities to oxygenation is not well understood due to the gap between taxonomic and functional microbial composition. Here, two wells named CZK15 and CZK22 at the second confined aquifer in Central China were in situ aerated, and the chemical parameters of groundwater and microbial communities in bio-trapping sand sediment were analysed during aeration. The microbial metabolic functions related to C, N, S, Fe transformation were predicted by Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) approach and some key functional genes, such as phe, nah, narG, and soxB were verified by the real-time quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) method. The biomass was promoted, microbial diversity fluctuated, and microbial composition changed remarkably with aeration mainly constrained by reduction-oxidation (redox) variation and SO₄^2- concentration. Among functional microbes, aerobic chemoheterotrophs including aromatic compound degraders (also especially for relative abundance of phe and some nah gene) and methylotrophs are dramatically enriched interpreting dissolved oxygen (DO) consumption and total organic carbon (TOC) decomposing in sediment. Whilst fermenters and methanogen expectedly decreased during aeration. Denitrifying microbes and narG gene relative abundance increased corresponding to the NO₃^- increase after aeration, while microbes for N₂ fixation, ammonification, and nitrification decreased relating to the source of NH₄⁺. The sulfide oxidation causing increased SO₄^2- was reflected by the blooming of sulfur-oxidizing microbes and soxB gene. Some sulfate reducers persisted in sediment after aeration due to sufficient SO₄^2- as substrate. Fe(II) was mainly chemically oxidized as iron-oxidizing microbes were of low abundance and tended to decrease with aeration. The iron-reducing bacteria Geobacteraceae increased with aeration corresponding to the increased Fe(III) oxides formation. The findings of this study could have important implications in understanding the biogeochemical behaviours with cyclic redox conditions.

Effects of biochar content on gas diffusion coefficient of soil with different compactness and air contents

Biochar has been found to be a potentially suitable amendment for landfill cover material and agricultural soil. The addition of biochar can improve the physical (e.g., adsorption capacity) and hydrological properties (e.g., water/gas permeability) of soil. However, no experimental study is available about the effect of biochar content (BC) on the gas diffusion coefficient (D_P) of soil. The present study investigated the effect of BC on D_P under different degree of compaction (DOC; 85%, 90%, and 95%) and soil air contents (SAC; 5%, 10%, and 15%). It was found that DOC and BC had negligible effects on D_P when SAC was low (~ 5%). In contrast, when the SAC was relatively high (~ 15%), soil with DOC of 85% had the largest D_P for BC ranging from 0 to 15% (w/w). Only when the SAC was large (~ 15%), the addition of biochar generally increased D_P.

Effects of biochar on soil microbial community and functional genes of a landfill cover three years after ecological restoration

Landfills, as the most common approach to disposing of municipal solid waste worldwide, disturb native ecosystems and create a need for ecological restoration. The restoration of landfill cover with biochar has shown immediate potential to improve soil microbial functions within one year. However, such characteristics could change after a longer period of time. Here, soil properties, microbial communities, and microbial functional genes related to nutrient cycling were investigated three years after the biochar amendment of the topsoil of a subtropical landfill cover. The results showed that the levels of soil organic matter, water content, total carbon (C), total nitrogen (N) and total phosphorus (P) of biochar-amended soils were higher than those of control soil. Different soil microbial community structures were observed in the biochar-amended and control soils. Nine phyla, including Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria, but not Actinobacteria or Chloroflexi, were enriched in the biochar-amended soil. Although the impact of biochar on shaping microbial communities increased after a longer period of restoration, no differences were observed in soils that were amended using different biochar:soil ratios. The abundances of functional genes related to C and N cycling decreased, whereas those of genes related to P cycling were higher in soils that received biochar amendment. This finding suggests that compared with the control soil, biochar-amended soils were less active in processes involved in C and N cycling but enhanced in processes related to P cycling. This study can serve as a reference for future ecological restoration of degraded lands using biochar.
