Dehalogenation of trichloroethylene vapors by partially saturated zero-valent iron

A comprehensive review and perspective research in technology integration for the treatment of gaseous volatile organic compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are harmful pollutants emitted from industrial processes. They pose a risk to human health and ecosystems, even at low concentrations. Controlling VOCs is crucial for good air quality. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the various methods used for controlling VOC abatement. The advancement of mono-functional treatment techniques, including recovery such as absorption, adsorption, condensation, and membrane separation, and destruction-based methods such as natural degradation methods, advanced oxidation processes, and reduction methods were discussed. Among these methods, advanced oxidation processes are considered the most effective for removing toxic VOCs, despite some drawbacks such as costly chemicals, rigorous reaction conditions, and the formation of secondary chemicals. Standalone technologies are generally not sufficient and do not perform satisfactorily for the removal of hazardous air pollutants due to the generation of innocuous end products. However, every integration technique complements superiority and overcomes the challenges of standalone technologies. For instance, by using catalytic oxidation, catalytic ozonation, non-thermal plasma, and photocatalysis pretreatments, the amount of bioaerosols released from the bioreactor can be significantly reduced, leading to effective conversion rates for non-polar compounds, and opening new perspectives towards promising techniques with countless benefits. Interestingly, the three-stage processes have shown efficient decomposition performance for polar VOCs, excellent recoverability for nonpolar VOCs, and promising potential applications in atmospheric purification. Furthermore, the review also reports on the evolution of mathematical and artificial neural network modeling for VOC removal performance. The article critically analyzes the synergistic effects and advantages of integration. The authors hope that this article will be helpful in deciding on the appropriate strategy for controlling interested VOCs.

Degradation of trichloroethylene vapors by micrometric zero-valent FeCu and FeNi bimetals under partially saturated conditions

The degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors by zero-valent Iron-Copper (Fe-Cu) and Iron-Nickel (Fe-Ni) bimetals with 1%, 5% and 20% weight content (%wt) of Cu or Ni was tested in anaerobic batch vapor systems carried out at ambient room temperature (20 ± 2 °C) under partially saturated conditions. The concentrations of TCE and byproducts were determined at discrete reaction time intervals (4 h-7 days) by analyzing the headspace vapors. In all the experiments, up to 99.9% degradation of TCE in the gas phase was achieved after 2-4 days with zero-order TCE degradation kinetic constants in the range of 134-332 g mair-3d-1. Fe-Ni showed a higher reactivity towards TCE vapors compared to Fe-Cu, with up to 99.9% TCE dechlorination after 2 days of reaction, i.e., significantly higher than zero-valent iron alone that in previous studies was found to achieve comparable TCE degradation after minimum 2 weeks of reaction. The only detectable byproducts of the reactions were C3-C6 hydrocarbons. Neither vinyl chloride or dichloroethylene peaks were detected in the tested conditions above their method quantification limits that were in the order of 0.01 g mair-3. In view of using the tested bimetals in horizontal permeable reactive barriers (HPRBs) placed in the unsaturated zone to treat chlorinated solvent vapors emitted from contaminated groundwater, the experimental results obtained were integrated into a simple analytical model to simulate the reactive transport of vapors through the barrier. It was found that an HPRB of 20 cm could be potentially effective to ensure TCE vapors reduction.

Selective dechlorination degradation of chlorobenzenes by dual single-atomic Fe/Ni catalyst with M-N/M-O active sites synergistic

Removal and detoxification of chlorobenzenes have attracted public concern, multiple active sites single-atom Fe and single-atom Ni composite nitrogen-doped graphene (Fe_SA/CN/Ni_SA) cathode catalyst supplied generation and adsorption capacity of hydrogen and hydroxyl active species. M-O active sites coupled with M-N improved activity and stability of the catalyst, and decreased bond breaking energy barrier of C-Cl, Fe_SA/CN/Ni_SA-NiF cathode showed superior removal performance of chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons (monochlorobenzene: 98.9%, dichlorobenzene: over 90.4%, trichlorobenzene: over 85.7%) and selectivity. Chlorobenzenes were dechlorinated under low stepwise voltage on the Fe_SA/CN/Ni_SA-NiF cathode. The efficiencies of stepwise dechlorination reactions of chlorobenzenes were all above 76%, Faradaic efficiencies were above 71.8%. The Fe_SA/CN/Ni_SA-NiF cathode was not sensitive to the molecular structure and has overcome the high energy barrier of chlorobenzenes molecular structure. The electrophilic attack of H*_ads formed hyperconjugation bond weakened the possibility of the Cl atom forming a bond with the benzene ring, and was favorable for the Cl position to achieve single-electron transfer dechlorination. The selective stepwise dechlorination degradation of chlorobenzenes by Fe_SA/CN/Ni_SA-NiF cathode with multiple active sites demonstrated the advantaged performance of M-O and M-N active sites coupled synergistic in electrochemical reduction and degradation, providing a strategy for product-selective degradation of chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons.

Stepwise dechlorination of chlorinated alkenes on an Fe-Ni/rGO/Ni foam cathode: Product control by one-electron-transfer reactions

Research on the stepwise hydrogenation dechlorination of chlorinated alkenes forms an important basis for eliminating toxic intermediate incomplete dechlorination products. The low-cost Fe-Ni/rGO/Ni foam cathode both supplied electrons and exhibited hydrogen conversion activity, and it was an excellent tool for the study of stepwise dechlorination. Electrochemical reduction experiments were carried out on homologous chlorinated alkenes. The conditions affecting the dechlorination efficiency and the repeatability of the catalytic electrode were analyzed. The trichloroethylene (TCE) removal rates were all above 78.0% over 8 cycles. The maximum EHDC efficiency was as high as 86.1%, and the faradaic efficiency was over 78.8%. Electrochemical methods combined with the calculation of the electron transfer number are proposed to verify the good hydrogenation ability of the electrode and the stepwise reduction ability at proper voltages. The stepwise dechlorination electroreduction characteristics of chlorinated alkenes were explained. The C-Cl bond dissociation enthalpies of chlorinated alkenes were calculated by density functional theory (DFT), and the 4-Cl and 5-Cl of TCE were expected to be removed first. The stepwise cleavage of chlorinated alkenes on Fe-Ni/rGO/Ni foam during dichlorination provided a reference for controlling the reduction products of chlorinated alkenes and preventing the pollution caused by toxic intermediate products formed during incomplete dechlorination.

Synthesis and Characterization of Zero-Valent Fe-Cu and Fe-Ni Bimetals for the Dehalogenation of Trichloroethylene Vapors

In this study, zero-valent iron-copper (Fe-Cu) and iron-nickel (Fe-Ni) bimetals were prepared by disc milling for the dehalogenation of trichloroethylene vapors. For both Fe-Ni and Fe-Cu, three combinations in terms of percentage of secondary metal added were produced (1%, 5%, 20% by weight) and the formation of the bimetallic phase by milling was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The disc milled bimetals were characterized by a homogenous distribution of Ni or Cu in the Fe phase and micrometric size visible from scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis and by a relatively low specific surface area (0.2–0.7 m2/g) quantified by the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. The reactivity of the produced bimetals was evaluated by batch degradation tests of TCE in the gas phase with 1 day of reaction time. Fe-Ni bimetals have shown better performance in terms of TCE removal (57–75%) than Fe-Cu bimetals (41–55%). The similar specific surface area values found for the produced bimetals indicated that the enhancement in the dehalogenation achieved using bimetals is closely related to the induced catalysis. The obtained results suggest that ZVI-based bimetals produced by disc milling are effective in the dehalogenation of TCE vapors in partially saturated conditions.

Horizontal permeable reactive barriers with zero-valent iron for preventing upward diffusion of chlorinated solvent vapors in the unsaturated zone

Chlorinated solvents are extensively used in many activities and hence in the past decades impacted a large number of sites. The presence of these contaminants in groundwater is challenging particularly for the management of the vapor intrusion pathway. In this work we examine the potential feasibility of using horizontal permeable reactive barriers (HPRBs) placed in the unsaturated zone to treat chlorinated solvent vapors emitted from groundwater. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) powders, partially saturated with water and characterized by different specific surface areas (SSA), were tested, alone or mixed with sand, in lab-scale batch reactors using TCE as model compound. Depending on the type of iron powder used, a reduction of TCE concentration in the vapor phase from approximately 35% up to 99% was observed after 3 weeks of treatment. The best performance in terms of TCE reduction was obtained using the ZVI characterized by the intermediated values of the specific surface area (SSA). This finding, which is in contrast with the results generally observed in in aqueous solutions, was tentatively attributed to a non-selective higher reactivity of the fine-grained iron samples with water and dissolved oxygen (with a consequent iron passivation) or to the occurrence of a diffusion-limited reaction kinetics. Based on the first-order kinetic degradation rate constants estimated from the experimental data, a horizontal barrier of 1 m containing ZVI or a mixture of ZVI and sand can potentially lead to an attenuation of TCE vapors over 99%.
