Hydrology induces intraspecific variation in freshwater fish morphology under contemporary and future climate scenarios

Long-term ecological research in freshwaters enabled by regional biodiversity collections, stable isotope analysis, and environmental informatics

Biodiversity collections are experiencing a renaissance fueled by the intersection of informatics, emerging technologies, and the extended use and interpretation of specimens and archived databases. In this article, we explore the potential for transformative research in ecology integrating biodiversity collections, stable isotope analysis (SIA), and environmental informatics. Like genomic DNA, SIA provides a common currency interpreted in the context of biogeochemical principles. Integration of SIA data across collections allows for evaluation of long-term ecological change at local to continental scales. Challenges including the analysis of sparse samples, a lack of information about baseline isotopic composition, and the effects of preservation remain, but none of these challenges is insurmountable. The proposed research framework interfaces with existing databases and observatories to provide benchmarks for retrospective studies and ecological forecasting. Collections and SIA add historical context to fundamental questions in freshwater ecological research, reference points for ecosystem monitoring, and a means of quantitative assessment for ecosystem restoration.

Observed and projected functional reorganization of riverine fish assemblages from global change

Climate and land-use/land-cover change ("global change") are restructuring biodiversity, globally. Broadly, environmental conditions are expected to become warmer, potentially drier (particularly in arid regions), and more anthropogenically developed in the future, with spatiotemporally complex effects on ecological communities. We used functional traits to inform Chesapeake Bay Watershed fish responses to future climate and land-use scenarios (2030, 2060, and 2090). We modeled the future habitat suitability of focal species representative of key trait axes (substrate, flow, temperature, reproduction, and trophic) and used functional and phylogenetic metrics to assess variable assemblage responses across physiographic regions and habitat sizes (headwaters through large rivers). Our focal species analysis projected future habitat suitability gains for carnivorous species with preferences for warm water, pool habitats, and fine or vegetated substrates. At the assemblage level, models projected decreasing habitat suitability for cold-water, rheophilic, and lithophilic individuals but increasing suitability for carnivores in the future across all regions. Projected responses of functional and phylogenetic diversity and redundancy differed among regions. Lowland regions were projected to become less functionally and phylogenetically diverse and more redundant while upland regions (and smaller habitat sizes) were projected to become more diverse and less redundant. Next, we assessed how these model-projected assemblage changes 2005-2030 related to observed time-series trends (1999-2016). Halfway through the initial projecting period (2005-2030), we found observed trends broadly followed modeled patterns of increasing proportions of carnivorous and lithophilic individuals in lowland regions but showed opposing patterns for functional and phylogenetic metrics. Leveraging observed and predicted analyses simultaneously helps elucidate the instances and causes of discrepancies between model predictions and ongoing observed changes. Collectively, results highlight the complexity of global change impacts across broad landscapes that likely relate to differences in assemblages' intrinsic sensitivities and external exposure to stressors.

Unraveling the morphological patterns of a subantarctic eelpout: a geometric morphometric approach

Phenotypic variation in organisms depends on the genotype and the environmental constraints of the habitat that they exploit. Therefore, for marine species inhabiting contrasting aquatic conditions, it is expected to find covariation between the shape and its spatial distribution. We studied the morphology of the head and cephalic sensory canals of the eelpout Austrolycus depressiceps (4.5-22.5 cm TL) across its latitudinal distribution in South Pacific (45°S-55°S). Geometric morphometric analyses show that the shape varied from individuals with larger snout and an extended suborbital canal to individuals with shorter snouts and frontally compressed suborbital canal. There was size variation across the sampled populations, but that size does not have a clear latitudinal gradient. Only 8% of the shape variation relates to this size variation (allometry), represented by a decrease in the relative size of the eye, and a depression of the posterior margin of the head. There were spatial differences in the shape of the head, but these differences were probably caused by allometric effects. Additionally, 2 of the canals of the cephalic lateralis pores and the head shape showed modularity in its development. This study shows that the morphology of marine fish with a shallow distribution varies across distances of hundreds of kilometers (i.e., phenotypic modulation).

Temperature and concentration of ZnO particles affect life history traits and oxidative stress in Daphnia magna

Temperature affects physiological processes in organisms and the toxicity of chemicals. The widespread industrial use of ZnO causes contamination in aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate the chronic toxicity of ZnO at different temperatures using Daphnia magna as a model organism. The chronic toxicity of five different concentrations of ZnO was assessed at 23 °C and 28 °C. The results showed that higher concentrations of ZnO inhibited growth, production of first clutch eggs and juvenile accumulation at both 23 °C and 28 °C. Growth rate, numbers of first clutch eggs and juvenile accumulation were lower at 28 °C than at 23 °C. We also observed the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. At higher concentrations of ZnO, oxidative stress was induced leading to increase MDA level and decrease SOD activity at 28 °C. These findings indicated that high temperature and high concentration of ZnO inhibited the activity of enzymatic proteins. Nonetheless, among all treatments, the accumulation of zinc in D. magna was not significantly different. Our results suggested that both ZnO and higher temperature induced oxidative stress in D. magna. As a result, MDA concentration increased, SOD activity changed and the growth and reproduction of D. magna was adversely affected.

Phenotypically Induced Intraspecific Variation in the Morphological Development of Wetland and Stream Galaxias gollumoides McDowall and Chadderton

The hypothesis that contrasting hydrology induces divergent intraspecific phenotypic plastic responses in non-migratory freshwater fish was investigated. Morphologies of wetland and stream Galaxias gollumoides from South Island, New Zealand, at different stages of ontogeny, were examined. Phenotypic responses were tested for in a 2 × 2 factorial laboratory based controlled reciprocal transplant experiment with flow (current or no current) and source habitat (wetland or stream), as treatments. There was a shift in the overall head morphology of wetland current treatment G. gollumoides away from the wetland no current treatment, and toward the stream current treatment, demonstrating convergence in head morphology in the presence of flow of wetland and stream sourced captive G. gollumoides. Morphologies of captive reared G. gollumoides were also compared to developmental trajectories of morphological characters during the ontogeny of field reared first year, and adult conspecifics. In combination, experimental and field results support the hypothesis, finding habitat hydrology to be the potential mechanism inducing and maintaining intraspecific morphological divergence in G. gollumoides. Recognition of this mechanism inducing morphological divergence between populations also aids the taxonomic description of long genetically recognised lineages of co-members of the Galaxias vulgaris species complex.
