Abstract
The size of the adsorbent has the potential to influence extraction performance, but the size effect at the nanoscale is still poorly understood. In this study, organic-inorganic hybrid nanospheres (OIHNs) with controllable nanoscale sizes of 30, 50, and 100 nm were successfully prepared. These materials were further fabricated as solid phase microextraction (SPME) coatings with similar thicknesses, and coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to investigate their extraction performance. The results showed that the extraction capacities of OIHNs for chlorobenzenes (CBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were much better than those of their corresponding derived carbon materials, despite the smaller specific surface areas and lower porosities of them. In addition, the enrichment performance increased significantly with decreasing particle size, and the OIHN-30 coating demonstrated the best performance, with enrichment factors ranging from 1098 to 6853 for CBs. Finally, a highly sensitive and practical analytical method was established with a wide linear range of 0.5-5000 ng·L-1, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.43-1.7 ng·L-1. The determinations of ultratrace CBs in five marine water samples and five fresh water samples were realized successfully. This study is expected to contribute to a deep understanding of the environmental effects of nanoparticles and the design of high-performance adsorbents.

Abstract
There is an urgent need to develop efficient and reliable coating materials for solid phase microextraction (SPME), in order to quantify and monitor pollutants in environmental waters. Herein, a highly graphitized porous carbon/reduced graphene oxide (PC/rGO) was successfully synthesized by pyrolysis of metal organic framework/graphene oxide precursors, and used as a SPME coating for ultrahigh enrichment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water. The as-prepared PC/rGO exhibited high degree of graphitization, abundant number of micro/mesopores along with exceptional thermal stability, making it an ideal SPME coating material. The PC/rGO fiber offered an ultrahigh enrichment factor for PAHs (up to 126057), which could be attributed to the multiple interactions between the PC/rGO and PAHs, including hydrophobic and π-π interactions, partitioning, and mesopore filling effect. In the analysis of PAHs, the PC/rGO fiber showed a wide linearity (0.007-100 ng mL-1), low limits of detection (0.0005-0.005 ng mL-1), and good repeatability (RSDs <10.1%, n = 5) under optimized conditions. The established method was applicable for ultrasensitive determination of PAHs in different environmental waters and showed satisfactory recoveries. This study provides a novel way for constructing thermally stable SPME coating having efficient extraction performance.

Abstract
Excellent biochar properties are crucial for sorption performance, and a developed pore structure is especially important. Herein, novel porous carbon/porous biochar (PC/PB) composites, in which the porous biochar and porous carbon were prepared at the same time, were synthesized via a green method from algal biomass with the help of the self-activation of citrate for the first time, and the composites were evaluated for the sorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Many micro/meso/macropores were introduced into the PC/PB composites, which showed high specific surface areas (up to 1415 m2/g) and pore volumes (up to 1.08 cm3 g-1). The PC/PB composites displayed excellent SMX sorption capacities, which reached 844 mg g-1. Pore filling played a crucial role in determining the sorption capacity, and hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking controlled the sorption rate. This study provides an improved method for preparation of porous biochar.

Abstract
In this work, a magnetic molecularly imprinted chitosan membrane (MMICM) was synthesized for the extraction of chlorobenzene compounds in environmental water using the membrane separation method. The optimal extraction amount for chlorobenzene (9.64 mg·L−1) was found to be a 1:2 solid to liquid ratio, with a 20 min extraction time and 35 °C extraction temperature. This method proved to be successfully applied for the separation and trace quantification of chlorobenzene compounds in environmental water, with the limit of detection (LOD) (0.0016–0.057 ng·L−1), limit of quantification (LOQ) (0.0026–0.098 ng·L−1), and the recoveries ranging (89.02–106.97%).

Abstract
Porous carbon nanomaterials (PCNs) are widely applied in energy storage devices. Traditionally, PCNs were mainly synthesized by activation and templating methods, which are time-consuming, tedious, corrosive and relatively high cost. Therefore, the development of easier and greener methods to produce PCNs is of great significance. Recently, organic potassium salts (OPSs) emerged as versatile reagents for synthesizing PCNs. The OPS-based synthesis of PCNs can avoid the use of large amounts of corrosive chemical agents. Potassium carbonate generated in situ from the decomposition of OPSs could serve as both a green activation agent and a water-removable template to produce nanopores. Potassium oxide and potassium formed at higher temperature could generate additional porosity, contributing to a highly porous architecture. The carbon-rich organic moiety could function as a carbon precursor and chemical blowing agent. This review aims to elucidate the multifunctionality of OPSs in the synthesis of PCNs and the capacitive performance of the corresponding PCNs. To this end, recent progress on the capacitive performance of PCNs synthesized from OPSs is summarized. This review provides constructive viewpoints for the cost-effective and green synthesis of PCNs with the aid of OPSs for application in supercapacitors.

Abstract
Lotus-like Ni@NiO embedded porous carbons (Ni@NiO/PCs) were fabricated by pyrolysis of MOF-74/cellulose nanocrystal hybrids, and used as a solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating for ultrasensitive determination of chlorobenzenes (CBs) from water combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Owing to its abundant chemical groups, high porosity, and excellent thermal stability, the as-prepared Ni@NiO/PCs presented superior extraction performance compared to commercial SPME coatings. Notably, Ni@NiO/PCs derived from MOF-74/CNC hybrids presented higher extraction efficiencies towards CBs than that derived from pristine CNC and MOF-74 due to the formation of micro/mesopores and more abundant oxygen-containing groups. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the proposed analytical method presented wide linearity range (0.5-1500 ng L-1), ultra-low detection of limit (0.005-0.049 ng L-1), and excellent precision with relative standard deviations of 4.7-9.2% for a single fiber and 8.8-10.9% for 5 fibers, and long lifetime (≥160 times). The proposed analytical method was finally applied for determination of CBs from real water samples, and the recoveries were in the range of 93.2-116.8% towards eight CBs. This study delivered a novel and efficient sorbent as SPME coating to extraction and determination of CBs from water.

Abstract
In this work, carbon dot-decorated graphite carbon nitride composites (CDs/g-C3N4) were synthesized and innovatively used as a SPME coating for the sensitive determination of chlorobenzenes (CBs) from water samples, coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The CDs/g-C3N4 coating presented superior extraction performance in comparison to pristine g-C3N4, owing to the enhancement of active groups by CDs. The extraction capacities of as-prepared SPME coatings are higher than those of commercial coatings due to the functions of nitrogen-containing and oxygen-containing group binding, π-π stacking, and hydrophobic interactions. Under optimized conditions, the proposed method exhibits a wide linearity range (0.25-2500 ng L-1), extremely low detection of limits (0.002-0.086 ng L-1), and excellent precision, with relative standard deviations of 5.3-9.7% for a single fiber and 7.5-12.6% for five fibers. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of CBs from real river water samples, with spiked recoveries ranging from 73.4 to 109.1%. This study developed a novel and efficient SPME coating material for extracting organic pollutants from environmental samples.

Abstract
Contaminated groundwater migrates in reverse direction under capillary force in vadose zone, and the attenuation process of pollutant adsorption and microbial degradation changes the environment of vadose zone. In this study, the response of toluene to environmental factors during reverse migration and attenuation of toluene from aquifer to vadose zone was studied by column experiment and experimental data analysis. The changes of environmental factors, including potential of hydrogen (pH), dissolved oxygen (DO), and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and toluene concentration were monitored by soil column experiment under sterilized and non-sterilized conditions. The 16S rRNA molecular biological detection technology was used to quantitatively analyze the impact of microbial degradation on the environment. Finally, the correlation between environmental factors and concentration in the attenuation process of toluene in the vadose zone was quantitatively studied by Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) and multivariate statistical equation. The results showed that pH was primarily affected by microbial degradation, and DO and ORP were primarily affected by both adsorption and microbial degradation. The attenuation of toluene was divided into two stages: adsorption dominated (0~26 d) and microbial degradation dominated (26~55 d). The degradation amounts of microorganisms at each position in the non-sterilized column from bottom to top were 9.37%, 55.34%, 68.64%, 75.70%, 66.03% and 42.50%. At the same time, the article proposes for the first time that there is an obvious functional relationship between environmental factors (DO, ORP, pH), time (t) and concentration (CToluene):CToluene=C0+A100t+Bα+Cβ+D100γ, (α,β,γ are the pH, DO and ORP of capillary water, respectively; A, B, C and D are all undetermined coefficients), R2 > 0.95. The results of this study may facilitate the use of simple and easy-to-obtain environmental factors to characterize the dynamic process of pollutant concentration changes.

Abstract
Nitrogen-doped porous biochar (NPB) with a large specific surface area, wide pore size distribution, graphitized structure, nitrogen doping, and hydrophobicity was fabricated by high-temperature modification of algal biochar with potassium carbonate. This NPB was then uniformly coated on stainless steel wire as a novel solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber. The extraction efficiency of NPB-coated fiber for seven chlorobenzenes (CBs) was excellent; it was 1.0-112.2 times higher than that of commercial SPME fibers. A trace determination method was developed for seven CBs in water with the optimized extraction conditions by NPB-coated fiber and gas chromatography-electron capture detector, which showed wide linear ranges (1-1000 ng L-1), low detection limits (0.007-0.079 ng L-1), great repeatability (2.5-6.5% for intra-day, and 3.1-6.8% for inter-day), and excellent reproducibility (3.5-6.3%, n = 5). The practicality of the developed method was evaluated using real water samples and showed great recoveries (89.55-105.19%). This study showed that low-cost biomass wastes could be converted to advanced biochar materials by a facile method, and displayed excellent performance in SPME applications.

Abstract
The waters and wastewaters around industrial areas are heavily polluted and have adverse effects on the ecosystems. The present study is mainly focused on the electropolymerization of ortho-phenetidine and co-deposited on a steel wire along with graphene oxide nanosheets as a novel coating for solid-phase microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous media prior to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. PAHs are composed of multiple aromatic rings which have been linked to skin, lung, bladder and liver. Cancer is a primary human health risk of exposure to PAHs. To obtain a firm and stable coating, several empirical factors relevant to the electrochemical process were investigated. Characterization for chemical structure and surface morphology of the synthesized nanocomposite was conducted with FT-IR spectroscopy and FE-SEM, respectively. XRD and TGA were applied to study the other properties of the nanocomposite. Some essential items involved in microextraction process were also checked in details. Under optimized case, validation parameters were assessed. Wide linearity (0.005-5.0 ng mL-1), low detection limits (0.4-4.3 pg mL-1) and good repeatability (3.6-9.5%) and reproducibility (7.6-11.8%) were achieved. The developed method was utilized to analyze contaminated real samples such as wastewater samples from coal processing industries and agricultural water samples collected from the vicinity of the industry in different seasons and high recoveries were obtained, finally.

Li Y, Wei M, Liu L, Xue Q, Yu B. Adsorption of toluene on various natural soils: Influences of soil properties, mechanisms, and model. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2020; 740:140104. [PMID: 32927544 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2020.140104] [Citation(s) in RCA: 21] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/16/2020] [Revised: 06/06/2020] [Accepted: 06/08/2020] [Indexed: 06/11/2023]
Abstract
This study investigated toluene adsorption on natural soils. The linear partition model was found to represent the adsorption isotherm well (R2 = 0.958-0.994), compared with the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.901-0.991). Therefore, the coefficient, Kd, of the linear model indicated the adsorption capacity of soils A to F. Traditionally, Kd and the total organic carbon (TOC) content have a good linear relationship. However, this relationship was weak (correlation coefficient (r) = 0.689) when TOC values (8.43-12.9 mg/g) were low and close. To correct this deviation, this study investigated the influences of physicochemical properties, such as special surface area, mineral composition, functional groups, pH, and potentials. As soils B and C consisted of a large amount of active clayey minerals (69.4% kaolinite and 79.3% nacrite, respectively) and rich functional groups, they demonstrated the strongest adsorption capacity. Additionally, the r for pH-Kd, zeta potential-Kd, and redox potential-Kd were high, at 0.806, 0.914, and 0.932, respectively. To explore adsorption mechanisms, the adsorption thermodynamic parameter (enthalpy) was used initially to determine the forces. Combined with the analysis of soil properties, the mechanisms identified were hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen-pi bonding, involving co-adsorption with water molecules. Based on all studies, the properties were quantified and simplified by the plastic limit (PL), and TOC was simplified by soil organic matter (SOM). Then, PL and SOM were weighted by the entropy-weight method to obtain the determination factor, DF, a logarithmic parameter to replace TOC. Finally, a new model describing toluene adsorption on natural soils was established and expressed as Kd = 4.80 + 3.53DF. This new model had significantly improved the correlation between Kd and TOC (r = 0.933) and expanded the engineering adaptability.
