Effects of urbanization on Cd accumulation in agricultural soils: From the perspective of accessibility gradient

Occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of natural and synthetic steroid hormones in soil, water, and sediment systems in suburban agricultural area of Guangzhou City, China

Steroid hormones are highly potent compounds that can disrupt the endocrine systems of aquatic organisms. This study explored the spatiotemporal distribution of 49 steroid hormones in agricultural soils, ditch water, and sediment from suburban areas of Guangzhou City, China. The average concentrations of Σsteroid hormones in the water, soils, and sediment were 97.7 ng/L, 4460 ng/kg, and 9140 ng/kg, respectively. Elevated hormone concentrations were notable in water during the flood season compared to the dry season, whereas an inverse trend was observed in soils and sediment. These observations were attributed to illegal wastewater discharge during the flood season, and sediment partitioning of hormones and manure fertilization during the dry season. Correlation analysis further showed that population, precipitation, and number of slaughtered animals significantly influenced the spatial distribution of steroid hormones across various districts. Moreover, there was substantial mass transfer among the three media, with steroid hormones predominantly distributed in the sediment (60.8 %) and soils (34.4 %). Risk quotients, calculated as the measured concentration and predicted no-effect concentration, exceeded 1 at certain sites for some hormones, indicating high risks. This study reveals that the risk assessment of steroid hormones requires consideration of their spatiotemporal variability and inter-media mass transfer dynamics in agroecosystems.

Multiple stable isotopes and geochemical approaches to elucidate groundwater reactive transport paths in mining cities: A case from the northern Anhui, China

Mining cities are ecotone areas where human and natural components interact. Indeed, the negative effects of mining activities on drinking water quality have become a serious public concern worldwide. To elucidate groundwater genesis and reactive transport path controlling the water pollution, a multi-bodies system in the Sunan Mine area in China was considered in this study. The results of the mineral phase characterizations, hydrochemical analysis, and multiple stable isotopes (δ2H/δ18O, δ34S and 87Sr/86Sr) indicated that calcite, dolomite, gypsum, quartz, halite, organic carbon, and gases (O2, CO2 and H2O) were the primary reactants in the aquifer system, accompanied by dissolution and precipitation of minerals, cation exchange, desulfation, and evaporation. An inverse hydrogeochemical model was employed to identify three paths, Path 1 demonstrated that mine water mainly originated from the Quaternary loose aquifer water (QLA), Permian fractured sandstone aquifer water (PFA), and Carbonifer fractured limestone aquifer water (CFA), accompanied by high K++Na+ and HCO3- concentrations due to the carbonate dissolution, halite dissolution, and cation exchange processes. Path 2 showed that the recharge of the CFA and Ordovician fractured limestone aquifer (OFA) occurred from the shallow recharge zone to the deeper OFA water through faults and fractures, mainly involving halite dissolution, carbonate dissolution, and gypsum dissolution. Path 3 demonstrated the interaction between the Hui River, collapsed pond water, and QLA, accompanied by gypsum dissolution, calcite dissolution, and cation exchange. Although the shallow QLA quality met the WHO drinking water standards, the pollution risk from the surface collapse pit water cannot be ignored. Therefore, effective approaches need to be considered in the study area to reduce the connection between the collapse pit water and QLA. The study results can help decision makers to predict water quality of complex water systems in ecotone areas and other similar regions worldwide.

Unveiling the spatial differentiation drivers of major soil element behavior along traffic network accessibility

Advancements in transportation networks have induced a spatial-temporal convergence effect, accelerating socio-economic elements flow and dismantling the conventional "core-periphery" urbanization gradient. Accessibility of transportation networks emerges as a reliable indicator of urbanization. There has been a growing global and Chinese focus on the various forms of metal pollution in urban soil. This study aims to investigate the driving forces and effects of urbanization factors (Gross Domestic Product (GDP), value added of secondary industries (VA), night light (NL), population density (PD), and road density (Distance)), soil property factors (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and total organic carbon (TOC)), and topographic factors (elevation (DEM), aspect, and slope) on toxic heavy metal elements (Cd, As, and Hg) and trace elements (Mn, Ti, V) in surface soil (0-20 cm) across varying accessibility levels in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration. Results reveal significant influence of accessibility on Cd and Hg levels (p < 0.05), with higher accessibility areas displaying elevated element concentrations. According to the evaluation results of the single-factor pollution index, Cd and V have the highest pollution exceedance rates (93.18% and 75.76%, respectively). Moran's Index results highlight typical spatial clustering of elements, with hotspots in areas of high accessibility. Urbanization has led to distinct spatial agglomeration patterns in element concentrations and environmental factors. Geographic detector analysis reveal that in low accessibility areas, metal element pollution and distribution are influenced by a combination of complex factors, including soil properties (pH), terrain conditions (DEM), and the urbanization process (VA). In high accessibility areas, toxic heavy metal elements are primarily driven by urbanization factors, largely influenced by transportation activities, industrial development, and population density, while elements Mn, Ti, and V are still influenced by both natural processes and urbanization activities. These findings suggest that urbanization intensifies the impact on potential toxic elements in soil, and that trace elements are increasingly affected by urbanization, warranting further attention.

A double-edged sword: Reductive soil disinfestation changes the fates of trace metal elements in soil

Although the effects of reductive soil disinfestation (RSD) in soil sterilization have been proven in several countries, the potential risks of trace metal elements (TMEs) caused by RSD require further assessment. Here, freshly Cd-spiked soil and historically contaminated greenhouse soil were exposed to RSD and the fates of TMEs, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, were investigated. All RSD treatments lasted for 21 days and subsamples were collected at different time intervals. Samples were open-air incubated for another 7 days until day 28 to simulate the situation after drainage. The bioavailability and geochemical fractionation of TMEs were investigated based on single and sequential extraction procedures and the environmental risks were assessed. The results showed that RSD increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, and the content of functional groups, including Fe, Mn, and S compounds respirations increased after RSD, highlighting the possible reductive dissolution of FeMn oxides and precipitation of TMEs. The dissolution decreased the reducible fractions of TMEs and increased the acid-soluble fractions of Co, Ni, Pb, and Zn, in the European Community Bureau of Reference results, reflecting the activation of TMEs in soils. However, the precipitation of sulfate resulted in the stabilization of Cd and Cu in two types of soils, increased their residual fractions, and decreased their acid-soluble fractions and bioavailabilities. After drainage, because the influence caused by precipitation rapidly disappeared and the impact of FeMn oxides dissolution remained, the acid-solubility of TMEs was greater than their initial status in the two soils. Furthermore, as a highly toxic metal, the activation of Cd at 28 days caused the rapid increase of ecological risks, which is particularly concerning. The results suggest that RSD temporarily increases the potential risks of TMEs and that certain measures must be taken.

Occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of PAHs and OPAHs in urban agricultural soils from Guangzhou City, China

The occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives in the environment is of growing concern because they exhibit higher toxicity than their parent PAHs. This study evaluated the large-scale occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of 16 PAHs and 14 oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) in urban agricultural soils from seven districts of Guangzhou City, China. Linear correlation analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between PAH and OPAH occurrence and a series of parameters. The compositional analysis, principal component analysis, diagnostic ratios, and principal component analysis coupled with a multiple linear regression model were used to identify the sources of PAHs and OPAHs in the soils. The average concentrations of ΣPAHs and ΣOPAHs (59.6 ± 31.1-213 ± 115.5 μg/kg) during the flood season were significantly higher than those during the dry season (42.1 ± 13.3-157.2 ± 98.2 μg/kg), which were due to relatively strong wet deposition during the flood season and weak secondary reactions during the dry season. Linear correlation analysis showed that soil properties, industrial activities, and agricultural activities (r = 0.27-0.96, p < 0.05) were responsible for the spatial distribution of PAHs during the dry season. The PAH distribution was mainly affected by precipitation during the flood season. The concentrations of ΣOPAHs were only related to the soil properties during the dry season because their occurrence was sensitive to secondary reactions, climate and meteorological conditions, and their water solubility. Our results further showed that coal combustion and traffic emissions were the dominant origins of PAHs and OPAHs during both the seasons. Wet deposition and runoff-induced transport also contributed to PAH and OPAH occurrence during the flood season. The results of this study can improve our understanding of the environmental risks posed by PAHs and OPAHs.

Pollution Characteristics, Sources, and Health Risk Assessments of Potentially Toxic Elements in Community Garden Soil of Lin'an, Zhejiang, China

The characteristics, sources and risk assessment of heavy metal pollution in community garden soil of Lin'an District were evaluated. The 28 soil samples from community garden were collected for determination of 7 heavy metal elements. The Geostatistical analysis, Spearman correlation coefficient, Principal component analysis and PMF model have explored sources of heavy metal pollution. The health risk assessment model has assessed ecological risk of heavy metals. The results revealed that average concentration of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were 16.0, 0.158, 76.1, 34.6, 45.8, 20.9 and 166 mg kg^-1, respectively. Whereas As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn were higher than background values. The spatial distribution of heavy metal pollution in the southwest of the study area was higher than northeast. The pollution sources of Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn in the study area were due to agricultural activities (42.9%), Cr and Pb were from traffic sources (36.2%), and As was domestic pollution (20.9%) according to Spearman correlation coefficient, Principal component analysis and PMF model. The non-carcinogenic risks of As (5.39), Cr (3.53) and Ni (2.07) have a value of 1, which indicated significant risk. The potentially toxic elements have not exceeded maximum threshold of USEPA, with regard to carcinogenic risk, while As (3.37E-05) and Cr (5.74E-05) have exceeded the safety range. It is concluded that soils of community gardens are facing pollution problem due to potentially toxic elements which require environmental monitoring of the soil to reduce risk of human health.

Geochemical Anomaly Characteristics of Cd in Soils around Abandoned Lime Mines: Evidence from Multiple Technical Methods

Lime mines are a potential source of pollution, and the surrounding soil environment is generally at threat, especially in abandoned lime mines. This paper focuses on the study area in eastern Anhui, attempting to analyze whether Cd enrichment is related to abandoned mines. On the basis of geological investigation, this study systematically used XRD, XRF, GTS and universal Kriging interpolation to determine the distribution law of Cd in the study area, and evaluated the potential ecological risk of Cd. The results showed that the main mineral types of soil samples of red clastic rock soil parent material (RdcPm) and soil samples of carbonate soil parent material (CPm) were not completely the same. Correlation analysis showed that CaO, MgO and Cd were positively correlated with the CPm. Human activities led to the accumulation of Cd in the study area. High Cd was mainly concentrated in the northwest of the study area, which was correlated with abandoned mines and soil parent materials. The study area was dominated by slight potential risks, although some areas had medium potential risks and high potential risks. All potential high risks were in the CPm field. This study provides a scientific basis for the comprehensive utilization and development planning of soil in the study area.

Effects of native forest and human-modified land covers on the accumulation of toxic metals and metalloids in the tropical bee Tetragonisca angustula

The intensive shift on land cover by anthropogenic activities have led to changes in natural habitats and environmental contamination, which can ultimately impact and threat biodiversity and ecosystem services, such as pollination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of native forest and human-modified land covers on the concentrations of chemical elements accumulated in the neotropical pollinator bee T. angustula. Eight landscapes, within an Ecological Corridor in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, with gradients of forest cover, spatial heterogeneity and varying land covers were used as sampling unities. Bees collected in traps or through actives searches had the concentration of 21 chemical elements determined by ICP-MS. Results show a beneficial effect of forested areas on the concentrations of some well-known toxic elements accumulated in bees, such as Hg, Cd, and Cr. Multivariate Redundancy Analysis (RDA) suggests road as the most important driver for the levels of Cr, Hg, Sb, Al, U, As, Pb and Pt and bare soil, pasture and urban areas as the landscape covers responsible for the concentrations of Zn, Cd, Mn, Mg, Ba and Sr in bees. The results reinforce the potential use of T. angustula bees as bioindicators of environmental quality and also show that these organisms are being directly affected by human land use, offering potential risks for the Neotropical ecosystem. Our study sheds light on how land covers (native forest and human-modified) can influence the levels of contaminants in insects within human-dominated landscapes. The generation of predictions of the levels of toxic metals and metalloids based on land use can both contribute to friendly farming planning as well as to support public policy development on the surrounding of protected areas and biodiversity conservation hotspots.

Cadmium accumulation in wheat and maize grains from China: Interaction of soil properties, novel enrichment models and soil thresholds

The cadmium (Cd) activity in soil has been widely studied. However, the interactive effects of soil properties (e.g. soil pH, CEC, and SOM) on Cd transfer from soil to grain are generally overlooked. In total 325 datasets including soil pH, CEC, SOM, and soil Cd content were used in this study. The descriptive statistics indicated that Cd content in wheat and maize soils ranged from 0.05 to 10.31 mg/kg and 0.02-13.68 mg/kg, with mean values of 0.87 and 1.14 mg/kg, respectively. Cd contents in wheat and maize grains were 0.01-1.36 mg/kg and 0.001-1.08 mg/kg with average values of 0.15 and 0.10 mg/kg, respectively. The results of SEM demonstrated that the interactive effects of soil properties contributed more to Cd transfer from soil to wheat grain than the soil Cd content. Subsequently, CITs-MLR indicated that the critical factors, including soil pH and total soil Cd content, could mask the contribution of other soil properties on Cd accumulation in grain; soil CEC may prevent Cd from leaching and therefore improve grain Cd level of wheat especially at acidic soil condition. The result of derived Cd thresholds revealed that current Cd thresholds are not completely suitable to wheat and maize grain at different soil conditions. This study provides a new model for further investigation on relationships between soil properties, soil Cd content and grain Cd level.

Accumulation of potentially toxic elements in agricultural soil and scenario analysis of cadmium inputs by fertilization: A case study in Quzhou county

Fertilizer application has greatly increased crop yield, however impurities in mineral or organic fertilizers, such as heavy metals, are being added to agricultural soils, which would pose a high risk for soil and crop production. 115 soil samples were collected from Quzhou, a typical agricultural county in the North China Plain, to investigate the total content of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and chromium (Cr) in soils. The contamination levels and source apportionment of studied elements were explored by the pollution indices, multivariate statistical approaches and geostatistical analysis. The ranges of Cd, As, Pb, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cr were between 0.08 and 0.35, 5.34-15.9, 7.34-38.9, 12.9-61.3, 7.80-27.0, 31.4-154, and 17.0-50.5 mg/kg and with the mean values 0.16, 9.20, 16.0, 24.7, 17.6, 61.1, and 29.5 mg/kg, respectively. The studied area was slightly polluted mainly by Cd, and higher pollution was found in soils under vegetable crops. The application of mineral phosphate fertilizer and livestock manure were the main source of Cd and Zn, and other elements (As, Pb, Ni and Cu) might originate from soil parent materials. Scenario analyses were performed using the R programming language, based on the cadmium contents in mineral phosphate fertilizers and livestock manures. The results showed that the long-term application of phosphate fertilizers would lead to some Cd enrichment in soil without risk of substantial pollution. Compared to pure mineral fertilizers, the long-term application of blended fertilizers (30% livestock manures and 70% phosphate fertilizers) or livestock manures would incur a higher Cd pollution risk within a short period, with a maximum probability of Cd risk of 55.21%. Mitigation measurements and scientific agronomic practices should be developed to minimize the risk of potential toxic elements in agricultural soil.
