Kinetics of the formation and degradation of carbonaceous and nitrogenous disinfection by-products in Bangkok and Songkhla source waters

Emerging disinfection by-products formation of various molecular weight organic matter fractions in raw water contaminated with treated wastewater

Combining dissolved organic matter (DOM) in raw water (RW) with DOM in treated wastewater (TWW) can react with chlorine and pose emerging disinfection by-products (DBPs). This study evaluated DOM based on the molecular weight (MW) size fractionation, trihalomethane, iodinated-trihalomethane, haloacetonitrile, and trichloronitromethane formation potential (THMFP, I-THMFP, HANFP, and TCNMFP) of the RW from the U-Tapao Canal, Songkhla, Thailand and the RW mixed with TWW (RW + TWW) samples. The RW and RW + TWW were treated by coagulation with poly aluminum chloride. The DOM of RW and RW + TWW and their treated water was distributed most in the MW below 1 kDa. The MWs of 3-10 kDa and 1-3 kDa were the active DOM involved in the specific THMFP for the RW + TWW. The MW of < 1 kDa in the RW + TWW resulted in a slightly high specific I-THMFP and HANFP. The MW of 1 - 3 kDa in the coagulated samples had a high specific I-THMFP. The MW of > 10 kDa in the coagulated RW + TWW was a precursor for a particular HANFP. Monitoring systems for measuring the level of TWW mixed with RW and an effective process to enhance the efficiency of traditional water treatment must be set up to produce a consumer-safe water supply.

Detection and Stability of Cyanogen Bromide and Cyanogen Iodide in Drinking Water

This study systematically summarized the factors affecting the stability of CNXs, providing a reference for better control and elimination of CNXs. A method for the detection of CNBr and CNI in solution was established using a liquid–liquid extraction/gas chromatography/electron capture detector. Specifically, the method was used to investigate the stability of CNBr and CNI in drinking water, especially in the presence of chlorine and sulfite, and it showed good reproducibility (relative standard deviation <3.05%), high sensitivity (method detection limit <100 ng/L), and good recovery (91.49–107.24%). Degradation kinetic studies of cyanogen halides were conducted, and their degradation rate constants were detected for their hydrolysis, chlorination, and sulfite reduction. For hydrolysis, upon increasing pH from 9.0 to 11.0, the rate constants of CNCl, CNBr, and CNI changed from 8 to 155 × 10−5 s−1, 1.1 to 34.2 × 10−5 s−1, and 1.5 to 6.2 × 10−5 s−1, respectively. In the presence of 1.0 mg/L chlorine, upon increasing pH from 7.0 to 10.0, the rate constants of CNCl, CNBr, and CNI changed from 36 to 105 × 10−5 s−1, 15.8 to 49.0 × 10−5 s−1, and 1.2 to 24.2 × 10−5 s−1, respectively. In the presence of 3 μmol/L sulfite, CNBr and CNI degraded in two phases. In the first phase, they degraded very quickly after the addition of sulfite, whereas, in the second phase, they degraded slowly with rate constants similar to those for hydrolysis. Owing to the electron-withdrawing ability of halogen atoms and the nucleophilic ability of reactive groups such as OH− and ClO−, the rate constants of cyanogen halides increased with increasing pH, and they decreased in the order of CNCl > CNBr > CNI during hydrolysis and chlorination. The hydrolysis and chlorination results could be used to assess the stability of cyanogen halides in water storage and distribution systems. The sulfite reduction results indicate that quenching residual oxidants with excess sulfite could underestimate the levels of cyanogen halides, especially for CNBr and CNI.

Effect of silver nanoparticles and chlorine reaction time on the regulated and emerging disinfection by-products formation

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used in many industries for multiple applications that inevitably release AgNPs into surface water sources. The formation kinetics of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the presence of AgNPs was investigated during chlorination. Experiments were carried out with raw water from a canal in Songkhla, Thailand, which analyzed the formation potential (FP) of trihalomethanes FP (THMFP), iodo-trihalomethanes FP (I-THMFP), haloacetonitriles FP (HANFP), and trichloronitromethane FP. Increased AgNP concentrations by 10-20 mg/L led to a higher specific formation rate of chloroform which is described by zero- and first-order kinetics. The increase in the specific formation of chloroform as increasing chlorine contact time could enhance both the THMFP rates and the maximum THMFP concentrations in all tested AgNPs. The AgNP content did not have a significant influence on I-THMFP and HANFP concentrations or speciation. The I-THMFP and HANFP increased in a short-chlorination time as mostly complete formation <12 h, and then the rate decreased as the reaction proceeded. The levels of THMs and many emerging DBPs are related to the presence of AgNPs in chlorinated water and chlorine reaction time. THMFP had a higher impact on integrated toxic risk value (ITRV) than I-THMFP and HANFP because of the chlorination of water with AgNPs. The chlorine reaction time was more effective for increasing the ITRV of THMFP than the level of AgNPs. Water treatment plants should control the DBPs that cause possible health risks from water consumption by optimizing water distribution time.

Characterization of lower Phong river dissolved organic matters and formations of unknown chlorine dioxide and chlorine disinfection by-products by Orbitrap mass spectrometry

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) have been reported as precursors of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and its molecular characteristics are rarely investigated due to its complexity. In this study, changes in the characteristics of DOM were investigated in the lower Phong River in Thailand in dry season and after the first rain in rainy season, using a non-targeted analysis with Orbitrap mass spectrometry. The river was rich with CHO features dominated by lignin-like molecules, while lipid-like molecules increase after domestic wastewater discharges. Wastewater discharge released DOM with higher molecular weight (MW) that was less oxygenated (low O/C) and less oxidized (low carbon oxidation state [C_os]). A lake affected by anthropogenic activities contributed more oxidized DOM into the river, while surface runoff carried DOM that is more oxygenated (high O/C), less hydrogenated (low H/C), and more oxidized (high C_os) to the stream. Water treatment further modified DOM to be lower MW. Approximately three hundred Cl-containing features (CHOCl) detected upstream were also found downstream. Disinfection by chlorine (Cl₂) or chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) formed both CHO and CHOCl DBPs. Low chlorine dosage applied to upstream and downstream samples resulted in many common unknown DBPs while increasing chlorine dosage resulted in more unique DBPs. At the same dosage, Cl₂ reacted with DOM more than ClO₂, including more oxidized molecules that are refractory to ClO₂. Both Cl₂ and ClO₂ produced chlorinated and non-chlorinated DBPs, and some DBPs were commonly found by both disinfections_. Cl₂-produced DBPs were more unsaturated (higher [DBE-O]/C) and oxidized (higher C_os) than ClO₂-DBPs.

Low-concentration of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) in drinking water perturbs the health-associated gut microbiome and metabolic profile in rats

Dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) is one of the emerging nitrogenous disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water. However, its potential toxicological effects remain poorly understood, especially at a low concentration found in the environment. In the present study, we investigated whether the consumption of low-concentration DCAN through drinking water would produce significant effects in male SD rats, with particular focus on their physiological traits and changes in their gut microbiome and metabolite profiles. After a 4-weeks DCAN intervention, significant changes were observed in the body weight, blood indices, and histology in DCAN-treated (100 μg/L) group. Proteobacteria was relatively less abundant in 20 and 100 μg/L DCAN-treated groups compared with that in the control group at phylum level. At genus level, Parasutterella and Anaerotruncus were significantly less abundant in both 20 and 100 μg/L DCAN-treated groups than that in the control group. Furthermore, the gut microbiota-related metabolites were dramatically perturbed after DCAN consumption. In the 20 and 100 μg/L DCAN-treated groups, there were 48 and 95 altered metabolites, respectively, and were found to be involved in sphingolipid signaling pathway, fatty acid biosynthesis, and cGMP-PKG signaling pathway. In summary, we demonstrated that consumption of low-concentration DCAN through drinking water could impair host health and induce gut microbiota dysbiosis and gut microflora-related metabolic disorders in male SD rats. Our findings highlight the potential toxicity of low-concentration DBPs and provide new insight into potential causal relationship between low concentration DBPs found in the drinking water and the host health.
